Shelby joins us to read selections from Lexington's Fallout Shelter Plan from 1965. The plan was created in a pilot program funded by Stanford Research Institute and the Federal Offices of Civil Defense to maximize survivability using shelters in the event of an atomic attack. One city in each state developed a plan, and Lexington was the representative city for Kentucky. The full plan can be found in the Library's Digital Archives.

For many, off-grid living is an appealing way to integrate their love of camping, survival skills, and problem-solving into their daily lives, while also contributing to the conservation of the environment by transitioning to more sustainable practices. The off-grid survivalist movement has successfully penetrated mainstream society, unlike many decades ago when adherents were often considered to be on the fringe of contemporary lifestyles. This can also be attributed to the often overlapping characteristics and objectives of the survivalists, off-grid dwellers, and those who are more commonly referred to as preppers. In fact, for many in the general population, discussions about long-term survival preparedness are identical to those of the doomsday prepper movement because this movement has achieved significant mainstream popularity thanks to reality television shows and series that revolve around making sure that one plans for and survives natural disasters, nuclear wars, and other cataclysmic global events. If we are to look at the history of the human race, however, we will see that being prepared for long-term survival is not a new concept. Past generations had to learn how to forage for their own food, make their own supplies, and survive the elements. Many of the skills that we still employ in today's modern lifestyles were passed down from previous generations, including farming, hunting, fishing, and more. The origins of the current prepper movement can be traced back to the 1950s when the Cold War between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was the topic of everyday headlines. There was much speculation and rumors (many of them unfounded) that nuclear weapons would be launched at any time, and Americans were anxious about how to survive such a disaster. The American government even supported these ideas, and encouraged the people to construct their own bomb hideouts or fallout shelters. Bomb drills were conducted constantly, and many of the population became engrossed with the idea of long-term survival in case nuclear bombs did start dropping from the sky. Around the same time as the Cold War and the looming threat of nuclear bombs, there were also a series of economic recessions that directly impacted daily life. The possibility of monetary collapse and the failure of the economic structure became a real threat, and popular investment advisors such as Harry Browne held seminars discussing how to survive a financial crisis. I will review two TV presentations from the 50s that convey that perspective. First up is Atomic Attack, a fictional account of a suburban housewife surviving an attack. The second is a documentary entitled A Day Called X, the program demonstrates how effective civil defense can be if planned according. En el relato de hoy, Foster, como todos los niños de su generación, vive inmerso en el terror por la amenaza constante de una explosión atómica. Al mercado llegan continuamente nuevos modelos de refugios antinucleares domésticos que dejan obsoletos los que se vendían apenas unos meses antes. Desafortunadamente la familia de Foster no posee ninguno y como es anti-P Foster tampoco tiene derecho a usar el de la escuela. Existen refugios públicos, a sólo 50c la entrada pero, ¿y si la caída de la bomba le encuentra en clase? o peor: sin dinero. [semi-spoiler] Titulo original “Foster, you’re dead”, se publicó en “Star Science Fiction Stories” en 1955. Sobre ella, Dick dijo: [Un día vi el titular de un periódico que decía que el Presidente había sugerido que si los americanos tuvieran que comprar sus propios refugios antibomba, en vez de que estos fueran provistos por el gobierno, cuidarían más de ellos; una idea que me puso furioso. Lógicamente, cada uno de nosotros deberíamos poseer un submarino, un caza a reacción, y sigue cuando. Aquí, sólo quería mostrar cuan cruel pueden ser las autoridades en lo que atañe a las vidas humanas; como pueden pensar en términos de “dólares” pero no de “personas”] Como curiosidad añadir que una noche oyendo la KPFA (mítica emisora situada en Berkely, California y programa progresista de debate y actualidad) Dick escucho a uno de los "contertulios" describir una historia que había leído en un tabloide ruso y le sonó muy parecido a su relato. Al principio pensó que estaba loco! Pobre Dick, típica alucinación, creer que hablan de ti en la radio, pero es verdad: así cómo iba a poder saber el pobre qué es lo que es real y qué no!?" Al final resulto que ciertamente el magazine ruso Ogonek había "tomado prestada" y publicado (ilegalmente) la historia sin pedir permiso (tuvieron que acabar pagándole royalties). Volvemos a otro de esos relatos de ficción de Dick que transcurren en el presente (del autor) y en una ciudad de provincias norteamericana standard (podríamos llamarla Springfield). Mola mucho cuando el cuento es post-apocalíptico como El Mundo de Jon (en un futuro en el que ya ha ocurrido un gran evento, como una guerra mundial a escala nuclear, que ha diezmado a la población y transformado la cultura) o apocalíptico en sí mismo (como Segunda Variedad) pero en este caso es pre-apocalíptico: y Dick trasmite muy bien la opresión, la ansiedad y el sentimiento de ultimátum que impone la incertidumbre de una muerte inminente. Aquí creo que mezcla estupendamente este tema y otro de sus temas favoritos presentes en la mayor parte de obras cyberpunk posteriores: la fuerza opresora y controladora del sistema capitalista y su indispensable hidalgo: la publicidad. El estado de paranoia en el que la mayor parte de la población vivió durante los años cincuenta y la época del Mcarthysmo (la amenaza roja, las cazas de brujas, etc) es algo para lamentar, pero especialmente doliente es el caso de los niños. Aquí se juntan las intenciones aviesas del estado para controlar a la población a través del miedo (estilo 1984) y el uso de la propaganda. Los años cincuenta es la edad de oro de los documentales propagandísticos (hemos visto muchas parodias de ellos en los Simpson, el juego fallout recrea parte de su estética con ello: hay muchos ejemplos cojonudos y al final pongo un par de links curiosos), incluso se inauguró un género música (Library Music, Production Music) especial para que las empresas e instituciones pudieran añadir sonido a sus producciones. Especial es el caso de la serie “Duck and Cover”, que traducido significa: agáchate y cúbrete. La protagonista era una tortuga y el objetivo fue instruir a los niños sobre qué hacer en caso de que una bomba nuclear estuviera a punto de estallar sobre sus cabezas. El consejo para todos era: acude a tu refugio nuclear! Y en aquella época ciertamente se vendieron y construyeron muchísimos refugios nucleares (Fallout Shelters) en los patios y sótanos de las casas americanas. Volviendo al documental de Duck and Cover, entre otras cosas, decía más o menos: “a veces, la bomba peude caer sin previo aviso, entonces, ya sabes: agáchate y cúbrete. Busca una pared, un agujetro y duck, and cover!” Tremendo, no? Pero tremenda es de verdad la locura que mediante este sistema propagandístico del terror implantaron en toda una generación de niños. Los ingleses en Europa también lo vivieron, especial es la serie “Protect and Survive” pero de esta ya hablé en otro audio. Sólo recalcar la pena que dan estos pobres niños a los que les comieron la olla. En el colegio del relato a los niños se les enseña como cavar, como construir cestos de mimbres (superviviencia). Todo esto inspiró una subcultura a la que hoy llamamos los “preppers” (de “preparadores” o algo así) gente experta en conseguir estar dispuesto para responder en cualquier situación de emergencia. Aconsejo una búsqueda por internet una tarde de lluvia porque encontraréis cosas divertidas. Y esa pena que nosotros sentimos por esas generaciones de niños está representada en Foster (por cierto, no se si el título juega con la típica frase de “Michael, you’re fired!” pero me suena igual). Me da muchísima pena este niño. Su padre es una persona de la época anterior, todavía no le ha comido la olla la cultura del consumismo y la publicidad. No quiere subvencionar una industria con la que no está de acuerdo, quiere seguir siendo su propio jefe y apostó sus futuro por ese sueño (y va perdiendo). Si viviera hoy sería un decrecentista del crash-oil. Pero quien puede convencer mejor a un padre de renunciar a sus principios que su propio hijo. Su propio hijo con miedo. Y es que jugaban a eso: puedes salvarte si te gastas 25000 dólares en un refugio. Pero al año siguiente saldrá otro refugio mejor. Aquí ya sale el tema de la obsolescencia programada, pero sobre todo el del mindcontrol que ejerce la publicidad, orquestado tanto desde la calle como desde la televisión e incrustado en las propias escuelas. Y no una táctica de publicidad cualquiera. Como bien dice el padre: esto no va de comprar o no una tostadora, aquí, si no compras la tostadora, te mueres! Que alternativa te queda. Estas tácticas se usan mucho hoy en día en publicidad, un buen ejemplo son los que venden antivirus o sistemas de alarma (últimamente oigo unos anuncios de securitas en la infame cadena ser que son aberrantes pro como usan esta estrategia. El término en concreto es F.U.D: Fear, uncertainty and doubt. Miedo, incertidumbre y duda. Si consigues que tus clientes potenciales estén en este estado, desinformados, preocupados y capacidad de discernimiento para elegir conseguirás encajarles tus productos mucho más fácilmente. Por otro lado cuando la familia compra el refugio, la gente alrededor cambia su opinión respecto a ellos. Sus vecinos les respetan más, les tienen envidia, en el colegio los chicos ya no se ríen de Foster, etc. Es como: tener unas zapatillas nike, un iphone o cualquier otro producto para poder ser respetado. Es el poseer el producto lo que te hace feliz (el ejemplo de un refugio es muy bueno porque es algo que en principio nunca vas a usar) y esta premisa es válida desde que se escribió el cuento hasta ahora. De hecho, en el modo de mindcontrol en el que estamos inmersos desde los ochenta (que es más al estilo Un Mundo Feliz que 1984) la publicidad tira mucho más hacia hacernos creer que seremos felices por poseer tal o cual producto. Y Foster, cuando tiene el refugio, desarrolla hasta sensibilidad. Crea un ritual del bajar al refugio y se tira horas allí, extasiado. Sólo un producto de consumo ha sido capaz de hacerle aflorar sus sentimientos de belleza. Es tan, tan, tan terrible la imagen del niño tirado en el suelo del centro comercial hacia el final del relato, en posición como de “Duck and Cover” en el suelo cuasi catatónico. Pobriño. Puta publicidad. Y nos siguen haciendo esto a esta y otras escalas. El niño tiene comida la olla totalmente no sólo por la amenaza nuclear sino también pr el gobierno. Cuando le cuenta su padre la historia de la visita del presidente, él escucha extasiado.. el presidente de United States es su máximo máximo héroe. Por todo esto y más cosas que ya contaré me encantó leer el relato. Como música al principio he puesto canciones que recuerdan esa bella época del os cincuenta. Son canciones que se usaban para poner en los centros comerciales. Es un género que se creo en esa época y que se llama muzak, En realidad los temas que he puesto son posteriores, pero imitan el estilo de la música que se ponía en los supermercados, centros comerciales o jingles de los anuncios. Es “land of chocolate” (que conocemos de los Simpsons, ciertamente) y una canción de Ren & Stimpy, que siempre usaron está estética (más posterior, estilo años sesenta). Después he intercalado fragmentos de un publirreportaje, docuanuncio o como se llamen, lo podéis encontrar en youtuvbe por el nombre “Classic Atomic Bomb Shelter Promotional Advertisement - 1960s –“ sobre refugios nucleares. Y al final he puesto partes de los dibujos infantiles “Dcuk and Cover” que también os recomiendo encarecidamente echar por vistazo en los intertubos. En el cuento hay una referencia a El viento en los Sauces. Son unas historias infantiles en las que los protagonistas son unos animales (creo que un topo un rata y una rana) que todo niño anglosajón conoce y de las que recomiendo muy mucho mirarse unos cortos stopmotion que hay sesenteros. Por ejemplo está gracioso buscar: “Mr.Toad's motorcar”. Y en serio, todo este tema de los refugios en los años cincuenta, sesenta, es real: se vendían y se anunciaban. Si investigáis sobre eso, o sobre esos estilos musicales (library y production music, muzak, por ejemplo “1960's Library Music” o me gusto esto que subio un chico poniéndole reverb y haciendo que suene muy muy siniestro: M.M.M - Mall Of 1974) pasaréis también un buen rato. En el relato de hoy, Foster, como todos los niños de su generación, vive inmerso en el terror por la amenaza constante de una explosión atómica. Al mercado llegan continuamente nuevos modelos de refugios antinucleares domésticos que dejan obsoletos los que se vendían apenas unos meses antes. Desafortunadamente la familia de Foster no posee ninguno y como es anti-P Foster tampoco tiene derecho a usar el de la escuela. Existen refugios públicos, a sólo 50c la entrada pero, ¿y si la caída de la bomba le encuentra en clase? o peor: sin dinero. [semi-spoiler] Titulo original “Foster, you’re dead”, se publicó en “Star Science Fiction Stories” en 1955. Sobre ella, Dick dijo: [Un día vi el titular de un periódico que decía que el Presidente había sugerido que si los americanos tuvieran que comprar sus propios refugios antibomba, en vez de que estos fueran provistos por el gobierno, cuidarían más de ellos; una idea que me puso furioso. Lógicamente, cada uno de nosotros deberíamos poseer un submarino, un caza a reacción, y sigue cuando. Aquí, sólo quería mostrar cuan cruel pueden ser las autoridades en lo que atañe a las vidas humanas; como pueden pensar en términos de “dólares” pero no de “personas”] Como curiosidad añadir que una noche oyendo la KPFA (mítica emisora situada en Berkely, California y programa progresista de debate y actualidad) Dick escucho a uno de los "contertulios" describir una historia que había leído en un tabloide ruso y le sonó muy parecido a su relato. Al principio pensó que estaba loco! Pobre Dick, típica alucinación, creer que hablan de ti en la radio, pero es verdad: así cómo iba a poder saber el pobre qué es lo que es real y qué no!?" Al final resulto que ciertamente el magazine ruso Ogonek había "tomado prestada" y publicado (ilegalmente) la historia sin pedir permiso (tuvieron que acabar pagándole royalties). Volvemos a otro de esos relatos de ficción de Dick que transcurren en el presente (del autor) y en una ciudad de provincias norteamericana standard (podríamos llamarla Springfield). Mola mucho cuando el cuento es post-apocalíptico como El Mundo de Jon (en un futuro en el que ya ha ocurrido un gran evento, como una guerra mundial a escala nuclear, que ha diezmado a la población y transformado la cultura) o apocalíptico en sí mismo (como Segunda Variedad) pero en este caso es pre-apocalíptico: y Dick trasmite muy bien la opresión, la ansiedad y el sentimiento de ultimátum que impone la incertidumbre de una muerte inminente. Aquí creo que mezcla estupendamente este tema y otro de sus temas favoritos presentes en la mayor parte de obras cyberpunk posteriores: la fuerza opresora y controladora del sistema capitalista y su indispensable hidalgo: la publicidad. El estado de paranoia en el que la mayor parte de la población vivió durante los años cincuenta y la época del Mcarthysmo (la amenaza roja, las cazas de brujas, etc) es algo para lamentar, pero especialmente doliente es el caso de los niños. Aquí se juntan las intenciones aviesas del estado para controlar a la población a través del miedo (estilo 1984) y el uso de la propaganda. Los años cincuenta es la edad de oro de los documentales propagandísticos (hemos visto muchas parodias de ellos en los Simpson, el juego fallout recrea parte de su estética con ello: hay muchos ejemplos cojonudos y al final pongo un par de links curiosos), incluso se inauguró un género música (Library Music, Production Music) especial para que las empresas e instituciones pudieran añadir sonido a sus producciones. Especial es el caso de la serie “Duck and Cover”, que traducido significa: agáchate y cúbrete. La protagonista era una tortuga y el objetivo fue instruir a los niños sobre qué hacer en caso de que una bomba nuclear estuviera a punto de estallar sobre sus cabezas. El consejo para todos era: acude a tu refugio nuclear! Y en aquella época ciertamente se vendieron y construyeron muchísimos refugios nucleares (Fallout Shelters) en los patios y sótanos de las casas americanas. Volviendo al documental de Duck and Cover, entre otras cosas, decía más o menos: “a veces, la bomba peude caer sin previo aviso, entonces, ya sabes: agáchate y cúbrete. Busca una pared, un agujetro y duck, and cover!” Tremendo, no? Pero tremenda es de verdad la locura que mediante este sistema propagandístico del terror implantaron en toda una generación de niños. Los ingleses en Europa también lo vivieron, especial es la serie “Protect and Survive” pero de esta ya hablé en otro audio. Sólo recalcar la pena que dan estos pobres niños a los que les comieron la olla. En el colegio del relato a los niños se les enseña como cavar, como construir cestos de mimbres (superviviencia). Todo esto inspiró una subcultura a la que hoy llamamos los “preppers” (de “preparadores” o algo así) gente experta en conseguir estar dispuesto para responder en cualquier situación de emergencia. Aconsejo una búsqueda por internet una tarde de lluvia porque encontraréis cosas divertidas. Y esa pena que nosotros sentimos por esas generaciones de niños está representada en Foster (por cierto, no se si el título juega con la típica frase de “Michael, you’re fired!” pero me suena igual). Me da muchísima pena este niño. Su padre es una persona de la época anterior, todavía no le ha comido la olla la cultura del consumismo y la publicidad. No quiere subvencionar una industria con la que no está de acuerdo, quiere seguir siendo su propio jefe y apostó sus futuro por ese sueño (y va perdiendo). Si viviera hoy sería un decrecentista del crash-oil. Pero quien puede convencer mejor a un padre de renunciar a sus principios que su propio hijo. Su propio hijo con miedo. Y es que jugaban a eso: puedes salvarte si te gastas 25000 dólares en un refugio. Pero al año siguiente saldrá otro refugio mejor. Aquí ya sale el tema de la obsolescencia programada, pero sobre todo el del mindcontrol que ejerce la publicidad, orquestado tanto desde la calle como desde la televisión e incrustado en las propias escuelas. Y no una táctica de publicidad cualquiera. Como bien dice el padre: esto no va de comprar o no una tostadora, aquí, si no compras la tostadora, te mueres! Que alternativa te queda. Estas tácticas se usan mucho hoy en día en publicidad, un buen ejemplo son los que venden antivirus o sistemas de alarma (últimamente oigo unos anuncios de securitas en la infame cadena ser que son aberrantes pro como usan esta estrategia. Ted Sorensen remembers that early in the Cold War governments and families built fallout shelters and practiced "Duck and Cover" drills to try and survive a nuclear attack. Sorensen wonders if they would have been effective.
