Guest: Bobby Kotick, former CEO of Activision Blizzard; and Bing Gordon, general partner at Kleiner PerkinsIn 2020, when President Trump signed the executive order that would ban TikTok in the U.S., Bobby Kotick called his old friend Steven Mnuchin. The former Secretary of the Treasury told him that, if TikTok's U.S. operations were to be sold to an American company, Microsoft would be the only bidder.A couple calls later, he reached ByteDance founder and CEO Zhang Yiming, who said he'd rather sell to Bobby than Microsoft. Concerned about his ability to get the deal done solo, Bobby called Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and offered to make a joint bid. Nadella declined, but added, “ if the deal doesn't get done, we should sit down and talk about us buying Activision.” TikTok currently remains Chinese-owned, but three years later, Microsoft paid $75 billion for Activision Blizzard.Chapters:Mentioned in this episode: Harvard-Westlake School, Alison Ressler, Vivendi, Berkshire Hathaway, Bruce Hack and Arnaud de Puyfontaine, John Riccitiello and EA, Call of Duty, Bizarre Creations, Atari, Apple II, Commodore 64, Jean-Louis Gassée, Apple Lisa, Howard Lincoln, Philips, Magnavox Odyssey, Sutter Hill Ventures, Infocom and Zork, Toys-R-Us, Howard Hughes, E. Earthbound gilt als eines der kultigsten Konsolenrollenspiele der 90er Jahre: Ursprünglich 1994 für das Super Nintendo in Japan und ein Jahr später in den USA erschienen, ist Earthbound für seinen eigenwilligen Humor, seine charmante 2D-Optik und seine unkonventionelle Herangehensweise an das Genre bekannt. Doch was macht dieses Spiel wirklich so besonders? Welcome back to Super Crash Bros! This is a podcast series dedicated to kicking open the door to your next favorite Nintendo series! At last we reach the finale of Super Crash Bros with the ultimate crossover fighting gam franchise, Super Smash Bros! Jon and Amanda reunite once again to discuss the madness of Masahiro “Daddy” Sakurai's ultimate creation. They discuss the game's wild origins, starting in 1999 on the Nintendo 64. The game first started as a prototype that Sakurai and future Nintendo president Satoru Iwata worked on. However, they decided to add Nintendo characters for funsies. The duo then discuss the meteoric rise of the series, continuing with Super Smash Bros Melee for the GameCube, Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Wii (along with one of the best story modes for a fighting game ever, The Subspace Emissary), Super Smash Bros for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, and, finally, Super Smash Bros Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch. Finally, the duo also talk about their favorite weapons and items to use in the game, as well as their favorite characters. Kinda wild Nintendo got away with a lightsaber by calling it a Beam Sword. Come on, come all, for the grand finale of Super Crash Bros!!
The death of Satoru Iwata hit Nintendo fans hard in 2015, but with a recent spate of beloved celebs dying, John & Drew have a discussion over which affected us the most in our lives. PLUS the games they've played including Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure, Star Wars Hunters, It Takes Two & many more! Today, we'll be sharing with you a fond memory we both have of Satoru Iwata. We were so lucky to have worked under Mr. Iwata when we were at Nintendo and it might surprise you how often we got to see Mr. Iwata. He was consistently in our office and we spent a lot of time one-on-one with him. One of the many wonderful things about Mr. Iwata was he would not only talk to us about the Nintendo business but he would often share with us his own life philosophies. We learned so much from him and we still hold his lessons near and dear to our hearts to this day. Also in this episode, we react to the latest round of Switch 2 rumors and we share our impressions of the latest round of indie games that have come out on Nintendo Switch.
Back in 2004, the marketing definition of a "gamer" was narrow. It was young, and mostly male, and the video game industry was starting to stagnate. But Nintendo was poised to disrupt the gaming landscape (as it had done previously in the 1980s), and re-open the video game community to everyone. In North America, they had help from an enthusiastic new marketing VP named Reggie Fils-Aimé. Reggie later became president of Nintendo of America, and during his 16-year tenure with the company, he became its public face in the West. Video game fans around the world looked forward to his presentations and game announcements because they could tell he loved "Super Mario Bros.," "Pokémon," and "The Legend of Zelda" as much as they did. Nintendo's big swings resulted in some of the best-selling game systems in history: The Nintendo DS, the Wii, and the Switch. Reggie has since retired from Nintendo, but his new book "Disrupting the Game" recounts the successes, risks, mistakes, and many mentors he found along the way, including Satoru Iwata, the late president and CEO of the company.
Pete and Steve welcome Chuy back for a jam-packed episode. The boys discuss: Chuy's time with the NSO N64 controller, Xenoblade Chronicles 1 & 2, Reggie Fils-Aime's book and Satoru Iwata, AND we answer a TON of listener questions including: why does Nintendo keep partnering with Koei Techmo to make Warriors Games? One of the most memorable lines of the past two decades in video games was delivered not by a character in a game but by an executive on stage. “My name is Reggie. I'm about kicking ass and taking names — and we're about making games,” declared Reggie Fils-Aimé, introducing himself during Nintendo's presentation at the E3 convention in Los Angeles in 2004. The line represented a new attitude from Nintendo, a statement that the legendary game company hadn't given up in its battle against the would-be bosses of the industry, Sony and Microsoft. It marked the beginning of a resurgence for the Japanese company and its Redmond, Wash.-based subsidiary, Nintendo of America, which Fils-Aimé would go on to lead as president and chief operating officer. But it actually wasn't how that line was originally drafted. The last-minute change is one of many behind-the-scenes stories told by the retired Nintendo of America executive in his new book, “Disrupting the Game: From the Bronx to the Top of Nintendo.” The book combines Fils-Aimé's life story with leadership insights and some eye-opening anecdotes for fans of Nintendo and video games, including inside details about his working relationships with legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and late Nintendo President and CEO Satoru Iwata. Reggie Fils-Aimé joins us on this episode of the GeekWire Podcast to talk about his career, his book, and what's next in video games. He also shares the story of that pivotal introductory line, how it was originally supposed to be delivered, and the larger significance of the change that was made on the eve of the event.
