Believe it or not, polo was first played in Persia, perhaps as early as 6 B.C. or as late as 1 A.D. Originally a training game for the king's calvary, polo morphed into a game with four riders per side rather than 100 riders per side! The first polo game in the U.S. took place in 1876 in New York. The following year the Westchester Polo Club was formed. Now, polo is played around the country, including the Southwest. Our guests today both play the game. Diego Florez, DVM, a large and small veterinarian located in Scottsdale, AZ, is founder and developer of the Arizona Polo Club, also located in Scottsdale with an outdoor field in Casa Grande. Steven True was on Cornell University's polo team and now plays in Arizona. Diego and Steven speak with the cowboys about the equestrian game that is becoming increasingly popular and is played by men and women, boys and girls of all ages and riding ability. Thank you, Greg Hager, for sharing your musical inspiration at the end of this podcast.

While the image of anger walking around with a meat mallet may not sound very light and flowy, there is actually a HUGE opportunity for flow waiting for you here! Whenever you're stuck in a loop of crunchy emotions, it's easy to get caught up rehashing the situation that brought on the crunchy and pounding on it over and over again in your mind until you're completely exhausted from it. But rather than lean into the exhaustion (which by the way feels better than being super crunchy), you pick up the meat mallet and look for evidence that supports you needing to rehash that shit some more. All of this keeps you in a continual state of hyperarousal which is no bueno for your nervous system, your body, your mind, and your heart...so let's redirect all that energy into a flow of ease! Join us as Gladys shares what her walking anger adventure has been like lately and how Ulla's ultimate letting go of the meat mallet she carried for years ended up bringing her back to life from the dead. If you're struggling with any crunchy in your life right now, we promise this episode is going to bring you a huge dose of light and flow to your day, so come listen!

Welcome to our bonus podcast for the week! We've decided to give it a go spacing out our main and bonus episodes after it seemed to go down well splitting them up during the Euros. Although we can't guarantee which day the bonus podcast will be out each week because of our own schedules, it's likely to be either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday for the time being, with the main Street Talk episode out every Saturday as usual. Let's see how it goes! This podcast (which we actually recorded a couple of weeks ago, so sorry if any of the references aren't quite up to date!) we chat about the episodes we've been watching on our DVDs from between 1995 and 1999. This is the era that Corrie saw a big shift in tone as well as a bit of an overhaul of the cast. Out went the likes of Bet, Raquel, Derek and Percy, and in came the Battersbys, the Mallets and fan favourites Roy and Hayley. The late 90s also had Corrie hitting the headlines with the notorious Free The Weatherfield One story, tackled domestic violence in the McDonald household and saw Street residents gearing up for Millennium night. It was a time of big change for the show, but was it for the better? Let's find out...

In this episode, we interview former NAH President and all-around polo ambassador Alias Tagami on the state of bike polo, rules of the game, and what the heck obstruction/interference is all about. Also listen to the end - we get a firsthand account of an infamous chapter in Mallets of Mayhem history.
Viscount Anthony Bridgerton [m44] and his wife Kate [f36] met some number of years ago when Anthony was pursuing Kate’s sister, Edwina [f32]. During the course of their courtship, Anthony, both sisters, and several of his siblings played an infamous game of Pall Mall. For reasons that are unclear but are probably related to some sort of foreplay, Anthony extends a yearly invite to the original players for a rematch. For reasons that are unclear but probably have to do with Anthony being Viscount Bridgerton and rich and powerful, they all agree. Featuring: - Alligators - Anthony, still the boob man - The classic Freudian psychoanalytic theory, the ‘death drive’ which Rudi consistently and incorrectly calls the ‘death imperative’ - Canadian passive-aggression - Mallets as metaphors - Uncomfortable class realities - Different definitions of ‘winning’ This week, we feature a enemies-to-lovers sports romance, Goalie Interrupted by Avon Gale and Piper Vaughn - a book Kate still thinks is called Goalie Interrupted, and now she wishes for the Girl Interrupted/Hockey mash-up romance of her dreams. Dan Kesterke is Director of Bands at Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan. He’s also a very busy freelance clinician, drummer, and percussionist, who plays in several cover bands of various genres, a jazz quartet, and he performs in numerous symphonic and pit orchestra settings throughout southeast Michigan. On a cold, windy Monday morning at the tail end of 2019, we sat down to discuss his background, his journey into the world of music, the ups and downs of gig life, inspiring students, and earning respect on the gig. Other things that popped up in the conversation: click tracks, LEGO® toys, and golf analogies. Bonus points if you can pick out the freight train in the background somewhere during the interview!Follow Dan on the web:http://www.dankesterke.com/https://www.facebook.com/dankesterkedrumshttps://www.instagram.com/dankesterkeSupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=9JCBNUCRNRVKY&source=url)
Zach Morita takes a very real world, very experiential and progressive approach to music education at Niu Valley Middle School on the east side of Oahu in Hawaiʻi. His students commission musical scores from local artists, compete in Olympic events, collaborate with local chamber music ensembles and much, much more. Listen as Zach and I explore the DNA of music appreciation and exploration, his approach to project-based learning and portfolio assessments, and why his philosophy of teaching and learning music, and life moved me emotionally. Zach is in his 12th year as a music teacher at Niu Valley Middle School. He is a recent winner of the 2018 Farmers Insurance $100,000 Dream Big Teacher Challenge. Zachary has taken student performance groups to New York, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Colorado, Massachusetts, and Texas. In the summer of 2019, the Niu Valley Middle School Concert Band performed at the Australian International Music Festival in the Sydney Opera House. He has conducted and directed student groups at the 2017 New York Wind Band Festival in Carnegie Hall, the 2016 National Conference on Percussion Pedagogy, the 2014 American School Band Directors Association Conference, and the 2012 Winter Guard International Percussion World Championships. Disney announced the release date (November) and price ($6.99) for its new streaming service this week, and it’s set the bar awfully high (or low) for competing services. What does this mean for Netflix and Amazon? What about Apple? Why is ABC not even mentioned among Disney’s brands? Also Tim has some praise for goofy absurdism on TV and we get a phone call from an Australian doing an American accent. Host Tim Goodman and Jason Snell.
Talk the Talk - a podcast about linguistics, the science of language.
Again we tackle the questions that others dast not. Why do all children know the 'nyah nyah' song? What is the Trans-Atlantic accent? Do Chinese characters stay readable longer than English words? Who says they feel "less than"? When a computer menu says "Save", is that an imperative or an infinitive? Why does the word for "night" look like an "n" plus the word for "eight" in so many languages? And more.
How to think about life’s conditions, both good and bad. Gratitude and daily practice.

In the nineteenth episode of Otaku Brothers, Ryan talks about his business trip to Mexico. He neglects Pikachu in Pokemon Yellow in the process, and takes quite a bit of time ranting about microtransactions in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Well, both of the guys rant about microtransactions. A lot. Rusty played more Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of the Elusive Age and also explored ancient Egypt for a few hours in Assassin’s Creed Origins. After that they dive into listener questions, talking about HD Remasters, Best Dressed Video Game Characters, and eventually, talk their most hilarious and unsettling life experiences ever. Some of the wildest stories the boys have yet shared. Finally, they delve into the main topic of the show: Gaming franchises they simply do not enjoy. Sorry Kingdom Hearts fan. Shock World Service 077: Opposite Numbers (Jon Averill) 25/7/18 London, United Kingdom https://shockworldservice.bandcamp.com/ This podcast was made in waiting rooms at Lower Clapton Group Practice & The Royal Free Hospital between 2017 & 2018. 1. Tale Of Us – Ricordi Our opening track (underpinned by some recordings of London's Royal Free Hospital) comes from 2017s piano-led album Endless 2. Photay - Outré Lux From Photay's album Onism which boasts a mix of rich harmonic & timbral evolutions, field recordings, off-kilter vocalizations & impeccable sound design. 3. Hauschka - Wonder Volker Bertelmann is a German pianist & composer who might be best known for his soundtrack to the Baltasar Kormákur film Adrift. I much prefer this side of his work however, this track taken from the excellent Live At Robert Johnson Volume 8 compilation. 5. Melly – Shrubbery Dublin's Mel Keane is fast becoming one of my favourite new producers. This release is forthcoming on the equally great Major Problems label. 6. E Saggila - Assisting God Things take a turn towards the dark & claustrophobic with E Saggila aka Rita Mikhael who co-runs Summer Isle Records. 7. Ryan Teague - End Of The Line Bristol's Ryan Teague treads a similar path to contemporaries Portico Quartet, Ólafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm. 8. Mücha – South Ends I met Amanda, aka Mücha long before she even mentioned she was a producer. Let alone a great one. This is taken from her latest release Misc. Works. 9. Visible Cloaks – Wind Voices Visible Cloaks are probably my favourite band at the moment. Also known for their sublime Fairlights, Mallets & Bamboo mixes which discloses their main influences; super clean FM synth based music from 1980s Japan. 10. Sign Libra - Outro/Oophaga Pumilio Sign Libra is Agata Melnikova, who according to her bio focuses on the exploration of nature & its auspicious influence on human's imagination & emotional balance. & you should too. 11. Georges Delerue – Capri Beautiful piece of music from the soundtrack to Jean-Luc Godard's "Le Mépris. I'm almost certain I've used this before in a podcast. 12. RUI HO - Becoming Is An Eventful Situation (Intro) Berlin-based Chinese producer RUI HO makes electronic music that attempts to bridge modern club influences with traditional Chinese sounds. 13. Biologic - Crystal violet This is from a great collection called Sampler 06: Quality Electronic Music on AI Records which I bought in 2006 & never got a chance to include in a podcast, until now. 14. Alessandro Cortini – Perdonare Cortini produces work in a lot of varying styles – this release is from a more personal album, Avanti. Inspired by Super 8 home videos from his youth. 15. Exuma – You Don't Know What's Going On A sort of epilogue for the podcast. Taken from the debut record from righteous Afro-Bahamian songwriter Macfarlane Gregory Anthony Mackey, aka Exuma from back in 1970. This entire podcast was made in waiting rooms, this track may or may not be a comment on the level of healthcare received. www.shockworldservice.com https://shockworldservice.bandcamp.com
In Episode 43, C.J and Ryan tackle the hard hitting topics, such as BYO Music, Cheese-less Nachos and the history of crustaceans.
Shock World Service 069: The New Objectivity (Jon Averill) 24/7/17 London, United Kingdom 1. Oxford Street Saxophone Man – Unknown Part of my listening experience when I 1st moved to London was about how much background noise overtook music on my headphones, i've always tried to reflect this back into podcasts. 2. Wagner - Das Rheingold, Vorspiel Powerful piece of music i've never quite been able to get into a podcast, until now! 3. Mark Franklin - Release To The System (Beaumont Hannant Remix) From Warp's amazing 1994 compilation Artificial Intelligence 2 4. Delicate Features - Prologue St Petersburg's Delicate Features. Like listening to an opera backwards, in space! 5. Bruce - Before You Sleep A cold hammering drumbeat gives way to emotive electronic shimmers. 6. Visible Cloaks & Dip in the Pool – Valve (Revisited) A crystalline polished soundscape from the Portland duo previously known for the mix; ‘Fairlights, Mallets & Bamboo' 7. Ben Frost - Venter (HTRK Remix) Understated lo-fi textures from Ben Frost 8. Wyatt/Atzmon/Stephen - The Ghosts Within The avant-pop legend Robert Wyatt from his collaborative album ‘For the Ghosts Within'. 9. Gora Sou – Choreography Pristine electronic droplets give way to breathy textures & polyrhythms 10. Aphex Twin - With My Family [48k] Rare Aphex track that's not so rare now as he's just put it up to buy on his new site. 11. Afro-Disiak - Tambours D'Eau Belgium world music from 1988 just given a fresh release on Optimo Music. 12. Seefeel - Spangle 2nd track from Warp's Artificial Intelligence 2 compilation. 13. O'Flynn - Desmond's Empire The mysterious ‘O Flynn' with one of my favourites so far this year. Ethnographic, emotional house music! 14. Ryuichi Sakamoto - Elephantism Theme (edit) 2002's oddly titled ‘Elephantism Theme' winding up this episode. 15. Oxford Street Saxophone Man – Rivers of Babylon [Extract] Part of the same recording that intro'd the podcast. Recorded on phone on Oxford St last year.
