"No other youth culture or subculture centred on fashion or music, or both, has ever had as many fanzines dedicated to it as the mod revival." So wrote Eddie Piller at the start of his 2918 book Mod Zines (with Steve Rowland) and he should know: as editor and publisher of Extraordinary Sensations, Piller saw his 'zine sell a phenomenal 15,000 copies at its peak in the mid-80s, as many as legendary punk zine Sniffin' Glue had managed a decade earlier.Over the course of an hour-long conversation with The Fanzine Podcast's host, Tony Fletcher, former editor/publisher of Jamming!, Ed talks about some of those zines, about the success of his own zine once he brought in Terry Rawlings as partner, about the lasting allure of mod culture for him and thousands of others all over the planet, and especially, about his new memoir Clean Living Under Difficult Circumstances: A Life In Mod from the Revival to Acid Jazz. Published in 2023 by Monoray Books, Clean Living follows Ed's adventures through his East End upbringing to his West End clubbing, through trips to Australia and journeys round Europe, covers the violence of the era in gory details, ands with him founding the legendary Acid Jazz label, which is still going strong today.Additionally, as well as being a DJ, a podcast host himself over the years and an inveterate party promoter, Piller is the founder of Totally Wired Radio which since 2019 has broadcast DJs "who specialise in Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop, Ska & 2Tone, Country, Soundtracks and Library Music, Reggae, Film, Folk, Funk, EDM, World Music, Afrobeat, Latin, Gospel, Rare R&B, Poetry, Punk, Psyche and Garage, Disco along with Podcast Interviews." Oh, and he also co-wrote the book Punkzines, also published by Omnibus Press.Modzines referenced in this issue include Maximum Speed, Get Up And Go, Shake, Direction Reaction Creation, South Circular, XL5, Go Go, Shadows and Reflections and more. The Best Of Jamming!: Selections & Stories from the Fanzine That Grew Up, 1977-86 can be found here and signed copies are available in the USA direct from https://tonyfletcherauthor.bandcamp.com/merch/ SIgn up for Tony Fletcher's weekly newsletter, long weekend read, and for exclusive access to archived interviews, including those from his Keith Moon biography, at tonyfletcher.substack.com. In this episode we investigate the fine art of library music, where some of the world's best musicians produce collections of music to be used as sonic backdrops to films, TV series and viral social media videos. Oisin Lunny speaks to top-flight musicians, producers, composers and long-time creative partners Ted Barnes and Ali Friend about how they got into making library music and what makes it so special.

We're joined by Gary Helsinger, SVP, Licensing & Creative at Melodie, who chats to us about the state of library music, but also tells all of the best rock n roll stories we have heard on the Focus podcast thus far. Gary has had a rich and varied background to say the least: for instance, he was Director, A&R at Chrysalis Music Group whilst also a member of platinum-selling rock band Green Jellÿ – plus, he was also a manager, and has deep experience in licensing and synch. So he tells us about the state of modern library music and sync, and his work in that field at Melodie. He also regales us with stories of how he signed himself as a musician, discovered Jeff Buckley, signed the Smashing Pumpkins, argued with David Bowie, loaned Prince his guitar, snooped on shoppers behind a two way mirror with Michael Jackson, and, oh, a whole lot more. As broadcast March 25, 2022 with groove for days if you're on the podcast foray. Tonight we are proud to present a world premiere on the first Friday show of the new season. The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble is a brilliant veteran funk and soul band out of San Diego who we've been meaning to have on the show for a long time, and there is no better time to have them on the show tonight. Sure Fire maestro Tim Felten joined us tonight to talk about their fourth studio album due out in exactly one week's time, and we got an exclusive spin of an unreleased single from the album on the show for a great look into what's on offer come next Friday. Be sure to presave the "Step Down" LP and check out our exclusive playlist from and interview with Tim Felten, who rocked a series of inspirations to the band's unique sound and gave us a look into how The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble continues its morphology as they move into the future.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Aretha Franklin – Rock SteadyDelvon Lamarr Organ Trio – Don't Worry Bout What I DoStro Elliot feat James Brown – Turn It Up Give It ShroomsLonnie Liston Smith – A Chance For PeaceThe Sure Fire Soul Ensemble – The Other SideThe Sure Fire Soul Ensemble – Step Down Part II (32:34)Lack of Afro – For YouIkebe Shakedown – DramDe La Soul – Long Island DegreesDavid McCallum – The EdgeThe Charmels – As Long As I've Got YouGrant Green – Down Here On The Ground (Live) Part III (61:27)The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble – Boardwalk BumpDavid Axelrod – The FlyRamsey Lewis Trio – Slipping Into DarknessThe Poets of Rhythm – Eulogize the SourceThe Mohawks – Beat Me Till I'm BlueArzachel – Queen St. Gang Part IV (100:50)The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble – Love AgeIsaac Hayes – Walk On ByThe Cannonball Adderly Quintet – Walk Tall (Baby, That's What I Need)Herbie Hancock – Tell Me a Bedtime StoryBeastie Boys – Something's Got To GivePlacebo – You Got Me Hummin'

Unwiderstehlich! There are so many steps and industry professionals that will bend their ears around a track that has the potential to be used in their Trailer, TV or Advertising campaign. What makes this industry so hard is that you don't just have to impress one person. You have to impress a series of people from multiple companies before you get that wonderful email or phone call telling you that you just landed a sync. The good news is that there's so much media being created now that the chances of everybody living in a happy wonderland with lots of syncs is not out of the question. If you can consistently write great music and be reliable there is a place for any composer who wants to enter this industry. This episode focuses on the different stages of getting your music placed. Enjoy!
As @philipp-demankowski told his good friend @cover-1 about his plan to screen the Library Music Film in the fine local boutique cinema Thalia, the Dresden DJ-force wasn't only interested in watching the movie but also in contributing a mix to the project. That was very fitting as the digger with a never-ending passion for discovering new music has just lately dived deep into the inexhaustible vastness of library music. Therefore, it was a great opportunity to compile some of his latest findings and favorite records from the genre. The result is a trip into the wonderful world of library music under the name of “Bibliothèque électronique”.
