Legendary pianist, composer, arranger, and contemporary jazz giant Bob James joins Milestones as we delve into his experimental CTI debut, One, for its 50th anniversary. A groundbreaking amalgamation of jazz, funk, classical and orchestral elements produced hits like “Night On Bald Mountain,” “Feel Like Making Love,” and the classic that would later shape hip hop –  but almost never happened – “Nautilus.” We discuss his beginnings, working with legends like Quincy Jones and Sarah Vaughan, the impact of Creed Taylor, and his pioneering use of the Fender Rhodes piano. James shares stories behind his famous tracks, his classic contribution to the TV show 'Taxi,' and his thoughts on the evolving nature of jazz. We also highlight his cross-genre collaborations and his influence in hip-hop through the extensive sampling of his music.

Listening to Radio Luxembourg on his family's transistor as a teen in the British countryside, Simon Kirke  heard the siren song of The Beatles and was instantly hooked. Determined to make music his career, he spent two years in London before a fateful meeting with guitarist Paul Kossoff put him on a course to make his rock 'n' roll fantasy a reality. Along with Andy Fraser and Paul Rodgers, they formed the band Free which led to the mega hit/classic song All Right Now and Free becoming one of England's hottest bands. Then, in 1973, Simon, along with Free-mate Paul Rodgers, co-founded legendary hard rock supergroup Bad Company, a monster band that sold out record bins and stadiums worldwide. Their anthemic hits, Shooting Star, Feel Like Making Love, Can't Get Enough and Rock and Roll Fantasy remain among the most played songs in radio history.Simon joins us to share (mostly PG!) rock n' roll stories featuring his iconic bandmates and management and the music venues, record companies and recording studios where so much of his classic rock history played out. Simon tells us the story of Free and how All Right Now was written in desperation, to get the crowd dancing. Simon also details their legendary performance at the Isle of Wight Festival, and how Free stood up to the label that wanted to rebrand them the Heavy Metal Kids.He shares the backstage/pre-show moment when Bad Company's manager gifted them with platinum albums and we discuss the personality types drawn to each instrument. And, a quarter century sober, Simon considers whether productivity and creation may be the greatest high off all.Simon has written a possibly too spicy memoir. He is now scoring films and his pathway to sobriety has inspired an upcoming musical called Rock Bottom.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending the Max doc series, Smartless: On The Road and The Untold Story of the Investigation Into January 6th by Denver Riggleman and Hunter Walker.Path Points of Interest:Simon KirkeSimon Kirke on WikipediaBad Company on WikipediaSimon Kirke FacebookBad Company InstagramRoad RecoveryThe Breach - The Untold Story of the Investigation Into January 6th by Denver Riggleman and Hunter WalkerSmartless On The RoadSmartless Podcast

The second monthly episode of the Knowledge Breaks series is dedicated to the great Eugene McDaniels aka the Left Rev McD. McDaniels took a turn in the late 1960s from singing more straight-ahead jazz and soul singing to much more politically-themed works, both song by himself as well as written for others, such as the song "Compared to What" made famous by Les McCann and Eddie Harris. I think many beat-heads and record fiends know about McDaniels' epic "Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse" album for the samples and its rarity, but the songs on the album scared the U.S. power structure so much that McDaniels was essentially blacklisted by his own record label. This didn't stop him however from setting up his own publishing company, which allowed him to survive on the royalties from his song writing, which includes the classic "Feel Like Making Love." There wasn't a tremendous amount of interview or vocal snippets available but I found a few great ones that I recommend listening to in full below. Since many of the breaks on "Headless Heroes" are well-known, I tried to mix in a few of his other works as well as covers and more obscure songs. His music and words are HIGHLY recommended and I hope everyone checks out his songs if you haven't before. Clips on this mix are from some great videos linked on my Soundcloud page. Please share!

VE 126 Apples and Oranges Richard Dawson: Apples And Oranges Pink Floyd: Apples And Oranges Pink Floyd: If Bread: If Roberta Flack: Feel Like Making Love Bad Company: Feel Like Making Love Bon Jovi: Runaway Del Shannon: Runaway Jefferson Starship: Runaway Ringo Starr: Photograph Def Leppard: Photograph Cars Bye Bye Love Everly Brothers: Bye Bye Love Radiohead: High And Dry Rolling Stones: High And Dry Five Satins: In The Still Of The Night Frank Sinatra: In the Still Of The Night Today on the VE... a real cool theme that will have you connecting the dots thorugh the next hour of music--but first, let's begin with a salute to actor and game show master Richard Dawson, who died last week, but left this 45 RPM relic as part of his show business lagacy. I'm PC and this is the VE : Richard Dawson: Apples And Oranges Richard Dawson, at the height of his Hogan's Heroes fame, with the psychedelic novelty record, "Apples And Oranges." Funny...didn't Pink Floyd releaase a single with the same title at about the same time? (Pink Floyd: Apples And Oranges, est & fade) ....and so, my eureka moment....struggling with a theme for this week's Vinyl Experience...it's right there...like apples and oranges...some songs can share the same title, but be very different..case in point--let's stay with with Pink Floyd, and a cut from their 1970 album "Atom Heart Mother," called "If, " and follow that with a very different group, song of the same title, and similar emotional tenor...can you guess who it will be ... Pink Floyd: If Bread: If The VE with Bread, and Pink Floyd...two groups as different as apples and oranges, and two different, but relatable songs with the common title of "If." See how this works. OK.. Let's stay in the early 70's....1974 specifically, when two songs, both on Atlantic Records, shared the same title, and the distinction of being two of the year's bigest hits... Roberta Flack: Feel Like Making Love Bad Company: Feel Like Making Love The VE....Feel Like Making Love, by Bad Company, and Roberta Flack. As different as Apples and Oranges...let's keep it going , two entirely differnt eras of rock and roll, but two teen-idol bad boys, each debuting with a song called "Runaway." Bon Jovi: Runaway Del Shannon: Runaway The VE, Apples and Oranges...the songs Runaway by Del Shannon ion 1961, and Bon Jovi, who was an infant the year that came out, but shot to stardom in '83 with his tune. How about a bonus "Runaway" ?! Jefferson Starship: Runaway The VE....same title, different songs. Like apples and oranges...or paintings and.... photographs... Ringo Starr: Photograph Def Leppard: Photograph The VE....I know you've got the hang of this by now Cars Bye Bye Love Everly Brothers: Bye Bye Love Apples and oranges, and Cars and Everly Brothers, "Bye Bye Love," on the VE. There are so many twin title songs, we'll have to do a sequel hour some time....but for now, just time for another couple of sets...this one is Radiohead's most covered tune Radiohead: High And Dry Rolling Stones: High And Dry The Rolling Stones first attempt at a country-blues tune, and with fine harmonica by Mick jagger, on Aftermath's "High And Dry," and Radiohead, wit thie lonesome cowboy ballad "High ANd Dry," a tune Thom Yorke dislikes, but artists as diverse as Sugarland and Jamie Cullum, adore...they'e done their own versions...apples and oranges indeed. Let's wrap it up with some greasers, and the original skinny kid singer from the neighborhood.... Five Satins: In The Still Of The Night Frank Sinatra: In the Still Of The Night And that's the VE. As simple as The Five Satins, as sophisticated as Sinatra.....

Video Guitar Lesson 12: Arranging parts for bands and situations with two or more guitarists In this lesson, Dan and I continue to explore rhythmic patterns, looking in particular at the benefits and problems which arise when playing in situations with multiple guitarists. The focus for the lesson are two songs which I am arranging to play with a band that has in it a drummer, bassist, keyboardist/singer and me and another student of Dan’s on guitar. The two songs are ‘The One I Love’ by REM and ‘Feel Like Making Love’ by Bad Company, but throughout this lesson we look at things which arise in other songs to so that we can apply this to this situation. We look at octaves, open strings, pick up choice, EQ, guitar choice, briefly effects and playing using different inversions and much more. Timings for the SoundCloud audio version 00:02:31 The setup of my band 00:03:24 Introduction to the two songs which we are going to be looking at the parts for 00:05:09 First look at the One I love by REM 00:05:59 What Dan plays for the One I love 00:08:22 Playing a second part over the opening riff using octaves 00:09:15 Second go at the opening riff together 00:11:10 A more meaty second part - playing 5th chords piano style 00:12:30 Option of not playing at all and allowing the other guitarist space 00:13:05 Dynamics in Steve Vai's - the Love of God - using increasing vibrato 00:13:39 Back off at the beginning and as the song starts to take off you increase what you are doing 00:13:46 You want to hit a chorus and have somewhere to go, some punch, some headroom 00:14:00 Using the volume on your guitar 00:14:22 Second demonstration of the piano style part 00:15:12 Money for Nothing is a good example 00:15:22 staccato style like ACDC a Long Way to the Top 00:15:35 Discussion about frequency and where you sit in the mix 00:18:05 Best thing you can do is be mindful of separating your sound from the other guitar 00:20:19 Second part for the Kings of Leon Sex on Fire riff 00:21:13 Recap of advice on frequencies and staying out of eachother's way 00:22:29 Comfortably Numb - so many things to fill the air - use delay 00:24:09 Some effects are very indicative of the time 00:26:11 Second guitar part for after the introduction and during the verse 00:27:40 First way is to play chord shapes up at the 12th fret 00:29:13 Second option with a nice delay and more sparse playing 00:30:00 Third option - start with the Em even higher up the neck 00:31:34 Fourth option - really subtle notes with volume swells and delays 00:32:52 Chorus part 00:33:52 If someone is playing something rhythmic then a good second part could be blocky 00:34:48 Whole Lotta Rosie - ACDC 00:44:33 Humbuckers (e.g. Les Paul) Sad face EQ vs Strat smiley face EQ 00:45:40 Playing using gain - roll the tone back a bit 00:47:20 The middle position on the Les Paul mixing the pups 00:48:23 What's a treble bleed? 00:49:23 Feel Like Making Love - Bad Company 00:51:30 Run Like Hell - Pink Floyd 00:53:20 Rejigging the inversions of the triads 00:56:06 Rejigging the inversions for Feel Like Making Love 00:58:30 Arpeggiated chord part for the verse 00:58:56 Sweet Home Alabama 01:03:39 Similar chord set in Feel Like Making Love so you can do a similar thing 01:05:34 Raising the dynamics for the chorus 01:09:38 Sometimes when you consider parts for songs you can bring some modernity to your parts 01:10:35 Add a dash of your own thing

North Carolina Singer/Songwriter Yolanda Rabun announces the global release of her highly anticipated third studio album, YOLANDA, for Tuesday, March 8, 2016. The Yodyful Music release is available now for pre-order on the iTunes Store (https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/yolanda/id1079151749) and Yolanda’s exclusive online store via Square (http://mkt.com/yodyful-music-llc/yolanda) A number of fans, most of whom were Kickstarter backers that helped Rabun net over $21,000 to create the soul-infused jazz project, already have access to the new music. A few other lucky fans have snagged a copy of YOLANDA by attending a live performance of Rabun in February. The YOLANDA album, recorded in Raleigh, NC, at Haggard Recording Studios was engineered by Thurman Woods of Garner, NC who together with Yolanda paid particular attention to each track to ensure this fan-funded project had the unified sound people get from start to finish at Yolanda’s live shows. Yolanda notes, “The whole process of recording the music live for YOLANDA was really fun, organic and spontaneous, and what ended up coming through were songs that are powerful and dramatic, and musically cohesive.” Yolanda feels she has made an album that’s bursting with energy, soul and big life-affirming moments such as the deliciously ebullient latin jazz tune, Take the Day Off, the uplifting emotional power ballad, I Hope You Dance, and the folk/funk-powered Nina Simone anthem, Be My Husband. Yolanda gives her own smooth but straight-forward twist on two rhythm and blues staples: Rocket Love and Feel Like Making Love. The huge-hearted Hold on to Your Dreams, first featured as a single in 2013, finds a home on this album and continues to be Yolanda’s mantra to never give up on your gifts or your dreams. Rabun also co-wrote the wedding anthem, Yes, as a personal testament to love, marriage and God. Yolanda Rabun says she has never enjoyed making a jazz recording, undeniably fused with soul
