In this podcast, Martin Lawes talks to Helen Wallace-Bell about SMI and RMI which are part of the contemporary spectrum of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) and Music and Imagery (MI) methods Helen explains what these approaches are and how the recorded music used is chosen collaboratively to help the client develop their inner resources or work on issues. Helen is involved in MI training which also gets discussed. In addition, Helen talks about her work with clients who have PTSD and about online groupwork with carers. She discusses various music used in this work including Breezin' (George Benson, https://open.spotify.com/track/1m3BAsNsQAaSNMD2M6vlKY?si=af7875cabc884295), Angels Nest (Peter Kater, https://open.spotify.com/track/3ijj6aeXCKMZWsD0EdzneJ?si=ce6f4f6551184195), and Darkest Hour (Sevdaliza, https://open.spotify.com/track/0ZbHjO6HyoGMLq5dCQIYWm?si=f41ece3b7bf64b45). The podcast begins with Martin explaining how GIM in contemporary practice is a spectrum of different methods and approaches including MI. He outlines what the Bonny Method of GIM is, as the original GIM method, and how MI has been developed in part to meet the needs of clients where GIM is contra-indicated or is in other ways unsuitable. For music therapists wishing to use GIM with their existing clients, the MI methods are especially important.   Helen Wallace-Bell, MA, BA (Hons), FAMI, MIT(Dip.), IMBP(Dip.) trained as a Music Therapist at the University of Roehampton, qualifying in 2007. She then worked for many years with adults with a learning disability. During this time, Helen began training in GIM, an experience she found transformative and enlightening both professionally and personally. She is now a GIM Fellow and MI Therapist (MIT) working in mental health, trauma, personal development, and group work (https://www.routesforchange.uk/). She is also an Independent Music Breathing Practitioner, Assistant Trainer and Supervisor at The Integrative GIM Training Programme (www.integrativegim.org), and a BAMT registered supervisor. Helen's GIM training cohort were the first to be trained in SMI and RMI in the UK and she is passionate about the efficacy and value of MI as a therapy process. She has presented case studies at a number of conferences, including sharing the results of an SMI groupwork pilot project undertaken with music therapy organisation Whole Step CIC during Covid-19 lockdowns, and her own experience as a trainee using MI to process transference/counter-transference. In her spare time, Helen enjoys living by the sea, and is a singer, songwriter, and percussionist in a folk trio. References Wallace, H. On today's episode, American jazz fusion guitarist and singer-songwriter George Benson drops by to discuss what gave the Beatles “prestige” and how the band helped Black musicians succeed. Benson recorded his first album The New Boss Guitar, at 21, and followed it up with It's Uptown with the George Benson Quartet. In 1969, he recorded his homage to the Beatles' album Abbey Road, entitled The Other Side of Abbey Road. Things really took off for Benson in the mid-1970s, beginning with the LP Bad Benson, which topped the Billboard jazz charts in 1974. Benson scored a triple-platinum hit with his 1976 album Breezin', and in 1978, he earned a Grammy award for his live rendition of “On Broadway.” In 1980, Benson took the pop charts by storm with his studio album Give Me the Night. Produced by Quincy Jones, the LP yielded several hit singles including the upbeat, jazz-infused title track.  Benson's latest LP Dreams Do Come True features orchestrations that had been lost for 35 years, and were recently unearthed from his archive. The collection includes Benson's takes on such standards as “Autumn Leaves,” “At Last,” “My Romance,” “A Song for You,” and the Beatles' “Yesterday.” Over the years, Benson has earned 10 Grammy Awards, while seeing his career memorialized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everythingfabfour/support

What the Riff?!?
1972 - July: Leon Russell “Carney”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 15, 2024 33:20

One of the great underappreciated singer-songwriters of the rock era was Tulsa, Oklahoma native Claude Russell Bridges, better known as Leon Russell.  Russell was a musician and songwriter with records spanning rock, folk, country, gospel, bluegrass, and blues who began playing piano at the age of four.  He went to the same high school as David Gates (from Bread), and the two collaborated as a group called The Fencemen early on.  Russell went to Los Angeles and worked as a studio musician.  The list of folks he worked with is huge, including Jan and Dean, the Beach Boys, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, the Byrds, Barbara Streisand, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones.  He was a big part of the group Delaney and Bonnie, and was a primary inspiration to a then-upcoming pianist who went by the name Elton John.Russell was born with cerebral palsy, which produced some paralysis on his right side.  He walked with a limp, and he was bullied as a kid over it.  He also developed a piano playing style that favored his left hand, and keyboardists will recognize that as unusual since the right hand typically plays the melody on songs. We are looking at the third solo studio album from Leon Russell called Carney.  This is Russell's most successful album in the United States, and comes when he was at his height as both a musician and a performer.  It went to number 2 on the Billboard Album chart.  Carney is organized with a first side that tends toward folk or roots rock, and a side two that is more psychedelic.  Russell was quite the start at this time, and he found that fame had some downsides.  Carney contains observations about the rock star lifestyle, and compares it two the performers at a carnival midway.  Russell's fame as a solo performer would fall off about three years after this album when he would trend in a more country direction.  He remained a force in the studio and as a songwriter throughout his life.  Leon Russell passed in his sleep in 2016 at home while recovering from heart surgery.Bruce presents this icon of the singer-songwriter era in today's podcast, as previous host Brian Dickhute sits in this week in Lynch's absence. Manhattan Island SerenadeWe're leading off with a deeper cut from the album.  It's lyrics are told from the perspective of a guy broken down on the side of the road, thinking about a long lost love as the rain falls and the cars drive by.TightropeThis is the big hit off the album.  It went to number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.  This song encapsulates the theme of the album well, comparing the rock performer to a tightrope walker, with all the risks and the joys of performing stunts in front of the crowd.  If the Shoe FitsRussell takes on the groupies and hangers-on in this song.  It's a little like Pink Floyd's “Have a Cigar,” but instead of focusing on managers taking advantage of the band, this song looks at the parasitical elements of the press and the fans.  It maintains a light, satirical feel despite the pessimism embedded in the lyrics. This MasqueradeWhile never a hit for Russell, this song received some airplay as the B-side to “Tightrope.”  It would also be covered by a number of artists including Helen Reddy and the Carpenters, but it's most successful cover iteration would be from George Benson on this “Breezin'” album. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Dueling Banjos (from the motion picture Deliverance)Burt Reynolds stars in this action/horror film about a group of rafters who encounter strange back woods locals while rafting in Georgia. STAFF PICKS:I Can See Clearly Now by Johnny NashWayne gets us rolling on the staff picks with an optimistic song which went to number 1 in 1972.  The inspiration was an eye surgery that Nash had undergone which left him temporarily blind.  The song reflects the hope and joy when he was able to see again, and inspires hope during times of adversity. You Don't Mess Around with Jim by Jim CroceRob brings us one of Croce's signature lyrical stories.  Jim Walker was the baddest pool hustler around until Slim showed up at the pool hall and cut Jim to ribbons in a fight. “You don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask of the old Lone Ranger, and you don't mess around with Jim.” Too Late to Turn Back Now by the Cornelius Brothers & Sister RoseBrian features  a family soul singing group out of Florida formed in the 60's as a gospel group before adding Sister Rose in 1970. Carter, Eddie and Rose Cornelius released this single as a follow-up to their hit “Treat Her Like a Lady.”  The follow-up was even more successful than the former hit, going to number 2 in the Billboard Hot 100, while the previous hit went to number 3.  I Wanna Be Where You Are by Michael JacksonBruce's staff pick is the third single off MJ's debut solo album.  It went to number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Leon Ware and Arthur “T-Boy” Ross wrote this song, and Arthur Ross is the brother of Diana Ross.  Michael Jackson was producing solo work while continuing as a member of the Jackson 5, and his brothers are singing backup on this song. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Outta Space by Billy PrestonWe close out this week's podcast with a little sci-fi funk. Yo what's up this is toru and in a way so are you.For those of you who don't know me, I'm a music producer, artist, and entrepreneur.I make music for that space between the dance floor and the bedroom, which has been streamed millions of times and licensed by brands big and small, including companies like Apple.I believe that regardless of what you produce, whether it be music, art, physical goods, or even spreadsheets, you have a process, whether you know it or not.To explore this further, I created The ProducerHead Podcast.ProducerHead is a place to have conversations with Producers about their experience and process to share what works and what doesn't. To help each of us learn and improve our own processes along the way.Today's guest is Eric Boulanger, a professional mastering engineer and founder of The Bakery, a Los Angeles-based mastering studio.Eric has mastered GRAMMY-award winning and nominated projects, including work with Green Day, Hozier, Selena Gomez, The Doors...and the list goes on.I won't spoil the surprise, but Eric even had the chance to re-master a beloved childhood record. If that weren't enough,Eric was mentored by industry legend Al Schmitt, who, if you don't already know, won GRAMMYs for projects that include:George Benson's Breezin',Toto's Toto IV,Qunicy Jones' Q's Jook Joint,Luis Miguel's Amarte Es Un Placer,Ray Charles Genius Loves Company,Chick Corea's The Ultimate Adventure, andSteely Dan's Aja.I mean. The Far Middle episode 96 begins with birthday wishes to jazz guitarist Geroge Benson, and moves on to a timely dedication as Major League Baseball’s 2023 season gets underway in just eight days from this episode’s release. Going back to 1996, for episode 96, when no baseball players were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Nick offers a thoughtful look on players that aren’t in Cooperstown, but who have the career accomplishments to warrant induction. Nick then transitions from America’s pastime to the time of Teddy Roosevelt during his tenure at the Civil Service Commission. Nick discusses Roosevelt’s efforts to upend the spoils system, and replace it with a meritocracy in terms of hiring government employees. The idea was to go from who you knew, to what you knew, explains Nick. Related, Nick examines government today and how key positions are staffed. “I fear that our government has steered far, far away from where Teddy Roosevelt was looking to take it in the late 1800s,” says Nick. He asserts governmental decisions are not being made by those with the most experience and best skillsets, resulting in ineffective government being exposed at the worst possible times during crises. The discussion of meritocracy is connected to America’s regional power grids, and the need to let competition drive the best generation sources to power our energy systems. Nick focuses on the PJM grid, and revisits Winter Storm Elliot that hit the mid-Atlantic on Christmas Eve this past December. Nick underscores that natural gas, in particular Appalachian natural gas, didn’t just save the PJM grid, it saved lives. Despite the facts, there are environmental groups looking to fool the public and force an agenda. Environmentalists are executing their new sneaky two-step technique, which Nick dubs their “tame and blame” campaign. “If we allow natural gas to fairly compete and grow with private investment and innovation, then no more grid weakness, anywhere,” says Nick. He then presents six stark truths about wind and solar at scale on our power grid, which Winter Storm Elliot again exposed. When climate policies of the Left start to infiltrate the infrastructure of the power grid, cracks are going to appear quickly. And the same can be said of office real estate today in America’s major cities. Nick explains how climate change policies are stressing both grid capacity of power pools as well as balance sheets of urban office tower companies. In closing, Nick recalls Led Zeppelin’s best-selling album, Led Zeppelin IV, and in particular the track, “When the Levee Breaks.” In a similar vein, Nick argues that if, “the Left keeps ruling, the grid is going to break, and if the Left keeps ruling, the debt portfolio is going to break.”

Wake Up Call
Local Musicians - Breezin'

Wake Up Call

The first in the series "Local Live Music". A very fitting start, since this is the band that started my sound engineering career in the early 80s. Breezin' is a talented group of musicians located in the Four Corners area. They play an array of music from country, to classic rock, to the blues. Front man & long time friend Jeffrey L. Boddy plays one of the meanest lead guitars in the 4 Corners, Rusty Simpkins, one of the founding members of the band on drums, Emmett Fowler keyboards & vocals, Dean Foust, guitar & vocals, Shannon Farrell lead vocals, Ashley Casey lead vocals, and Jeff's grandson, Ryan Boddy on bass. Next week: I continue my series on dwindling local radio programing with long time resident Scott Michlin. Scott, General Manager of KSJE 90.9FM at San Juan College, talks about his transition from TV news to radio. Questions and/or comments, drop me an email: dageneralswakeupcallup@gmail.comThis Podcast was recorded live, unscripted and uncut at Better Homes & Garden Real Estate/Golden Door in downtown Farmington, NM.Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=DNYQMA27ZJKXN)

Second in my series "Church & COVID", I sit down with Randy Joslin, Lead Pastor at Oasis Church (https://www.theoasisnm.org). Super nice guy with an optimistic outlook. With his lovely wife Debbie, they tag team Sunday morning services. I look forward to sitting down with Debbie for her own podcast in the near future. Randy & Debbie are engrained in our community and have been bringing God's love since the late 80s.Next week I start my series on local musical talent when I sit down with 1/2 of Breezin', probably the longest performing band in the 4 Corners.Questions and/or comments, drop me an email: dageneralswakeupcallup@gmail.comPodcasts are recorded live, unscripted and uncut at Better Homes & Garden Real Estate/Golden Door in downtown Farmington, NMSupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=DNYQMA27ZJKXN)
