Betsi Flint, a 6-time AVP Champion, played at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) for both indoor and beach volleyball. She is a 2-time AVCA All-American in beach and still holds indoor records in career aces and digs. In Betsi's rookie AVP Season in 2015, she and Kelly Kolinske were the youngest team at the time to take home an AVP Championship. Betsi was voted the AVP Newcomer of the Year. Betsi also plays on the FIVB and has earned Gold in China and Silver Medals in Canada and Australia.Betsi's favorite career memory was winning AVP Hermosa in 2018 with Emily Day; she grew up watching this event, and in her first time playing at AVP Hermosa, she won in front of her friends and family. Her most defining moment, however, was winning AVP Cincinnati in her first year out of college. It was then that she realized she could pursue becoming a professional beach volleyball player full-time. When Betsi isn't playing volleyball, she is spending time with her husband Chase and their daughter Cora or meal prepping. One interesting fact about Betsi is that she was born and raised in a small town in South Dakota, where she fell in love with sports. She later moved to Phoenix, AZ, with her family. This week's skill is raising player volleyball IQ. An all too common statement from coaches after losses is "if only we had more volleyball IQ". This episode answers the question that we all want to know, how do we as coaches develop this critical set of skills in our players. Tod and Davis define volleyball IQ, point out it's many uses, and share ideas for how to train it in your athletes. In our scenario segment, Davis and Tod discuss the art and science of evaluating players at tryouts. When it is obvious, evaluating players is easy. When it is much closer, however, it can become very challenging to discern who has traits that would make a great choice for your team. On this week's scenario we go over some things to look for as well as some traits that might not tell the whole truth about a player's talents. We always share one great resource each week, and this week it is Beach Volleyball World on Youtube. This channel is dedicated to the world of International level beach volleyball. This episode of SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter, features Hagen Smith, one of the most physically impressive players on the AVP Tour and, yes, the son of the great Sinjin Smith, who is perhaps the most important person in the history of beach volleyball (he only helped found the AVP and FIVB, so there is that…). We chatted a bit about Hagen's well-known lineage, as well as: His physical recovery the last few years after a handful of surgeries That breakthrough fifth-place finish in Hermosa Beach a year ago How it was being raised by one of the greatest players of all-time His overall goals in the sport of beach volleyball, which includes, of course, “hitting the crap out of my serve.” Super fun podcast with Hagen, as fun to podcast with him as it is to watch him play beach volleyball. Evan Cory and Logan Webber are ready for their 2023 season in beach volleyball, here and around the world. Deciding to pair up again in 2023, after a few years apart, these two are expecting a great year on the beaches around the world. They want to keep a “cowboy” mentality on the beach this year staying focused, tough and determined for the entire year. Neither Evan nor Logan (Louisiana and Michigan) started in volleyball hotspots while learning the sport so they are excited about the growth they have helped create in their hometowns.A huge perk of being successful in beach volleyball are the traveling opportunities afforded them. They have both traveled the world to play volleyball and they are looking forward to the upcoming cities this year. It's always great speaking with world class athletes, good luck with the Olympic tryouts, while learning some of their travel tips and favorite places to play/visit.SUBSCRIBEYou can subscribe to The Travel Wins Podcast on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, YouTube, iHeart Radio, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, Spreaker, Podnews, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Radio Public, and Amazon. The Travel Wins intro song by Allison Johnson and Steve StevensWebsite Design by Stack Host#evancory #loganwebber #beachvolleyball

Charlotte starts with how she began playing the sport of volleyball. She shares that her dream as a young athlete was to play in Division One. She also discusses how she had to learn to be a team player and work hard for her dream. Having survived an ACL tear, Charlotte became unstoppable, starting her pro career in Sweden and later working with an agency. She talks about founding her company, Athletes Abroad, and what makes this company different from other agencies. Charlotte reminds young athletes to continuously pursue their dreams at all costs because it'll be worth it in the end. Key Points: Charlotte's goal when she was a younger athlete Becoming a better player Following the dream beyond doubts How Charlotte's goal became a reality Working hard for what you want A tough time in Charlotte's career Surviving an ACL tear and overcoming her fear Charlotte discusses starting a coaching career Playing pro in Sweden How Charlotte started her business What makes Athletes Abroad different? Advice to young athletes looking to become agents Quotes: “Anytime I was playing volleyball, I wanted to be on the court.” “My parents sacrificed a lot to even get me there.” “It's easy to give up on something when you think all of a sudden that you know that you're being wronged and that it's not fair what's happening to you, instead of looking at it as ‘what can I do better?' ‘How can I work harder?' How can I contribute to my team in other ways?'” “I love the sport, I also love interacting with people and giving back to athletes and I love helping people believe in themselves and get to that next goal of theirs.” “It's about getting a little bit better each day and challenging yourself within your own frame and within where you're at.” “Keep going after what you love and working hard and good things will happen.” “I want to be there to support the players every step of the way, and have a player-first mentality and prioritizing them and their needs kind of above everything else.” “I want them to have this community within athletes abroad and have these strong, powerful professional athletes that are supporting each other and helping each other because that's so important when you are thousands of miles away from family and friends.” “If you are pursuing what you love, then it'll be worth it in the end.” Connect with 9INE POINT: https://www.9inepointmag.com/ (Website) https://open.spotify.com/show/1cTZUEDwd6ZxAzj3w8jlrq (Podcast) https://www.instagram.com/9inepoint/ (Instagram) https://twitter.com/9inepoint (Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/9inepoint/ (Facebook) https://www.linkedin.com/company/9inepoint/ (Linkedin) Connect with Charlotte: https://www.instagram.com/charlotterh711/ (Instagram) https://athletesabroad.se/home/ (Athletes Abroad Website) https://www.instagram.com/athletesabroad.se/ (Athletes Abroad Instagram)

Mark Burik is a professional beach volleyball player and coach. He started Better At Beach Volleyball, while still competing at the highest levels, to help others who want to get better at beach volleyball. As I tell Mark, after interviewing so many different athletes on the show I think volleyball players travel as much as any other athletes in any sport. While the paychecks for beach volleyball might not be up to par with other sports, there are opportunities for volleyball players to play internationally and throughout the states. Mark shares several stories about his travels around the world for volleyball and how he balances being a world class athlete while operating growing coaching and player development businesses. We discuss the current status of beach volleyball; marketing of the sport, growth of young players and how the sport is coming out of the world wide pandemic.Make sure to follow Mark and Better at Beach on their social media pages to see how you can contact him and start achieving your volleyball successes.SUBSCRIBEYou can subscribe to The Travel Wins Podcast on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, YouTube, iHeart Radio, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, Spreaker, Podnews, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Radio Public, and Amazon. The Travel Wins intro song by Allison Johnson and Steve StevensWebsite Design by Stack Host#markburik #betteratbeach #beachvolleyball
