He is now going on his 38th year as coach at Penn State with an overall coaching record of 1189-186 (.865 winning percentage) ranking him first in NCAA Division I history. Other accolades include the AVCA National Coach of the Year five times (more than any other Division I coach), 7 National Championships (the most women’s volleyball titles of all-time), and has appeared in all 35 NCAA tournaments. What has you most excited these days? Why can’t both sexes hydrate the same way? What hydration sources out there being pushed commercially actually cause dehydration? When are the best times to hydrate? Is there a wrong time? How does dehydration play into injuries? How should athletes hydrate properly while traveling by plane? What eating habits should athletes have on 2-3 hour practice days? Key Lessons: If you start with good habits, you will further your career down the road Most sports drinks are designed to replace carbohydrates first, and then provide some fluid second “A standard sports drink has between 6-8% carbohydrate solution..when you look at that was a chemical..physiological standpoint...that concentration of carbohydrates are too concentrated to flow into the body easily.” SS @ 13:03 You can remove stress by watching what you are eating and drinking Optimal hydration will better your overall performance There is NO pure water in the body; plain water isn’t the main solution for hydration “If you are just drinking plain water, you’re not really maximizing what your body recognizes as the solution..so just a little bit of sodium in plain water..that will allow the body to pull that fluid in.” SS @ 18:28 Hydrate throughout the day with MORE than just water “...its eating watery fruits and veggies, its drinking mineral water that has the sodium in it or its making you own sports drink with 500 ml of water (16oz), dash of salt and a little bit of maple syrup (tsp.)..you’ll get some glucose..sodium, and then you’re going to get your fluid and its going to be absorbed.” SS @ 18:48 When dehydrated, you are prone to tissue tears, cramping, ACL injuries,etc. Compression tights during travel help with getting up and walking around as much as you can to prevent swelling in the ankles Have your products to make your protein drinks WITH you on your flights “12-13 hour flight...having two protein base drinks on the flight...the protein helps with the hydration aspect and the amino acids counteract some of the jet lag.” SS @ 24:37 You want to maximize the food before you have practice “..at least 90 minutes before you start and you can top up with snack..a 150 calorie snack, about 30 minutes before you start training, so you’re going to be well fueled.” SS @ 26:56 Stay hydrated all the way through practice with “functional hydration drinks” (glucose, sodium, potassium) HYDRATE and FUEL for whatever you are doing STACY’S TIP JAR What is your recommended breakfast for an athlete? Team: I look forward to the first couple of practices so I can see how the coach is working with the team, so I can understand their perspective. Arena: I check out the lights, they can be disturbing sometimes What personal habit do you believe has contributed most to your success? When I start something, I really want to finish it. What personal habit do you believe has contributed most to your success until now? If I start something I’m determined to finish it. Sleep & Morning ritual: I try to get at least 7 or 8 hours of sleep. Normally I wake up at 7 to get my daughter ready for school. When I wake up, I go to my kitchen, and I look and stare in the fridge. I try to have at least an hour to myself. How would you like to improve yourself as a person? I always try to be a better friend, mother, and athlete. What book would you give away and why? I would give away “The Compound Effect” by Darren Hardy, It teaches you how to put your life together, and taking tiny steps. I would have looked for a mentor, and maybe a hero, and I would have followed that person. I also would have read a bit more. My parents for giving me opportunities in tennis that most people wouldn't get where I grew up. They didn't motivate or push me because I did most of that myself, but they opened doors for me. Give a tool/habit you love to use to stay healthy: Well, at the moment I have been doing a lot of rehab for my back so I am in and out of the gym all the time. I also have my exercises I do at home but I spend plenty of time in the gym too. A useful tool or tip for eating on the go -OR- for traveling in general? When I was travelling to tournaments I always took a foam roller with me and packets of nuts so I wouldn't have to go around searching for a healthy snack. What's a cause or thing/action you like to do to add value to other peoples lives that you either know or dont know at all? The last few years I have taken more of an interest in politics (from an Arab perspective mainly). I like to read a lot and transfer what I know and think to open other people's eyes to what really goes on in the world (usually via Facebook). I think my generation is becoming more politically aware than perhaps the one that came immediately before them and this can lead to positive changes in the world. Mike dives into how important structure of not only training but your life as an athlete is to your success and how you should track progress and goals. In this first part we also talk about Functional Intelligence which Mike describes as “...the ability to function under pressure, in the defined environment, making great decisions based on a tactical way to play and the statistical percentages” and why it’s so important athletes have it!     BACKGROUND Today we will be talking with a Tennis Athlete, more of them to come in the near future. We will discuss how the will to be great is bigger than just talent alone and how important it is to give 100% effort without the fear of failure. Dino will share with us some of the challenges that came his way and how he handled them. He explains how helpful psychologists, coaches, and trainers are great people to have on your team and in your corner through the tough times of being an athlete, they are there to help you get better in every aspect. BIO Born, Dino MARCAN, from Rijeka Croatia in 1991. Currently living in Zagreb, Croatia. Went to IMG Academy in Florida and played in all 4 Grand Slams for Juniors. Best single result was the quarter final Junior at Wimbledon, and winning the Roland Garros Doubles. He then attended Ohio State University on a full scholarship. 1 In the Croatia at under 14 yrs old. He was a champion at indoors and outdoors at the Under 16s Team European Championships. Was the highest recruited international player in 2009. After one year of college, he got to the semi finals of the indoor championships and the quarter finals of the NCAA finals. Was also named an NCAA ALL-American as a freshman. As a professional, he was won 4 future’s tournaments and has competed at a number of challengers in the ATP. So far highest single ranking in the world is 289, and 151 in doubles. Key Lessons: We can’t just rely on our talents, we need to have the will to put forth the effort A failure/loss doesn’t have to take a huge mental toll on your career “At the end of the day you realize that the most important things in the world are not playing the US Open or being 290 or 250, as long as you stay healthy and as long as you make your life easy and you stay happy, a failure can be a really small part of your career.” DM @ 14:18 Focus more on the process, and results will eventually follow After a failure, try to get up and move forward right away Avoid the fear of failure and always give your 100% full effort “When I started working with some sport psychologists, we realized that there was actually a fear of failing and giving a 100% of yourself and then by working with them and started competing 100% stop caring about the outcome...I started focussing on the progress and not about the outcome.” DM @ 17:05 Get as many people in your corner as possible, because all advice could be helpful When you find something that you’re good at, that you enjoy, pursue it, see where it can take you Give yourself the right amount of time to transition into your professional career “To the young players out there, if you are not 100% sure that you have the right things to make it fast and not sure that you can be top 100 in the next year, go to college take 1, 2, or 3 years off, it’s a great transition from Juniors to Pro’s, that’s why I attended Ohio State University.” DM @ 23:48 The United States gives you the opportunity to compete at a high level and receive a good education at the same time. As a tennis player, once your career is finished, there are many job opportunities. DINO’S TIP JAR What’s the best advice that you have ever received? When nothing goes well focus on footwork and watching the ball What’s one of the first things you do when you arrive at a new arena to play? I hit 20 minutes down the middle What personal habit do you have that you believe contributes most to your success? Hard Work; getting up at 7 am in the off season, 2 sessions of 2 hours and 1.5 hour more in the gym, watching what you eat, taking protein shakes, and when you get to the tournament, spending 4-5 hours a day in the club, thinking about your matches, preparing yourself, it takes a lot of time OFF the court as well as ON the court Sleep & Morning ritual: I have to get at least 8 hours of sleep, I take quick and easy breakfast (cereal/yogurt), pack my stuff, leave the house, and I show up for practice at 10am, that is when I work the best. What is one way that you’d like to improve as a person? I would like to be more clean and organized (apartment). I would like to take my sport discipline and apply it to my personal life. How do you feel that playing other sports, soccer and golf, help you with tennis? Soccer helps me with my lungs, when I get back on the tennis court, I can’t afford to lose breath, and golf relaxes me and gets me into a quiet place where I can really work on my well being. What book would you give away as a gift and why? If it’s a tennis player, I would give the book of Brad Gilbert, Winning Ugly, it can teach you so much about tennis and competing in sports in general, But if its someone else, An Autobiography of Muhammad Ali and Mutant Message Down Under How do you like to improve athletes and add value to their lives? I’ve helped three younger tennis players, I also gave away 20 shirts and 20 shorts to a young player from Rijeka and seeing his reaction and how proud he was made me feel happy. I stay in contact with these young players and give them someone to look up to and give them advice on the game and what tournaments to sign up for. If you had a redo,and had all of the resources you have now, what would have done differently to reach success? I would definitely have had less moments of desperation, depression, and uncertainty, more self esteem and more self respect as a player. Hole Athlete Case Study: Norwegian Pro & National Team Volleyball Player Dec 16, 2014 Getting to know Mari a bit over the last couple weeks has been nothing short of inspiring & educational. When we chatted about the need to get our stories out to athletes trying to do what we do or just to add value in some way she was on board immediately. There's something that always sticks out about selfless people (AKA unselfish).. With Mari before we'd agreed on a time to do the podcast she'd done her research & found out I help kids get to school in the USA & Canada... She asked about it and we started working on it even before the podcast... now her brother is getting some more interest from schools which is exciting. Mari did a lot of hours of work to track down school's info for her brother who is busy with school and volley. SELFLESS I tell you... amazing of her. Imagine you write 20 people and tell them you've got a project to help others & you'd like their help (Read: TIME & EFFORT)... Welp, usually about half the people write back and only half of those might actually do something about it. This time it was even less...Well, Mari was one of those I wrote during the launch of Beyond Athletic a few weeks back and she was one of the 1st two responses and the 2nd person to schedule a time to record! I remind you she's in the middle of a time of year where they are playing sometimes 2 matches per week and traveling intercontinentally! Some people make reasons to help others... not why they can't. So grateful for Mari doing this... BIO Born, Mari Aase Hole, in Miritz, Switzerland on August 3rd, 1990. Moved to Olso, Norway to start school. She has a young sister and brother. She was raised to participate in many actives like hiking, skiing, soccer, volleyball, biking, etc. She played soccer mainly until high school when volleyball took over.. She won/accomplished just about everything possible in volleyball at the highest level, by the end of high school, in Norway and chose to attend UCLA in the USA where she played for 2 years and then moved to Ohio State University for her final two years of college eligibility becoming an AVCA All American! Her first pro team was in 2013-14 in Istres, France, where she was the Best Scorer & Attacker of the LNV PRO-A league! (French Top Division) .Now she plays volleyball for Team Norway and pro for the Bezier Angels in France. MOST GRATEFUL FOR: Family! BEING AWAY FROM FAMILY CAN BE TOUGH EVEN IN TOUGH TIMES THERE ARE POSITIVE THINGS & LESSONS "It's been a big transition...schools were really great...but it was really tough... But I had a really good time, I had a lot of really good people around me." THINGS WILL NOT ALWAYS GO AS PLANNED HARD WORK PAYS OFF "If you want to get somewhere you have to put in a lot of the hours yourself...Don't expect anyone to do it for you." YOU MUST SET GOALS "YOU have to be the TRIGGER POINT behind it..." CAN'T COMPETE AT A HIGH LEVEL AND LEARN AT A HIGH LEVEL IN NORWAY SIMULTANEOUSLY "Volleyball is so much bigger in the States...There's a huge economic aspect behind it...So there's just expectations in volleyball are different. The coaches...I've never had had that big of a staff around me before... " FEARS OF FAILING BUT ALSO OF SUCCESS CAN HOLD YOU BACK IF YOU LET THEM "You do not get to go inwards." BE APPRECIATIVE! "Engage yourself in your surroundings!" ATHLETE'S TIP JAR What was holding her back from becoming better? Fear of failure & success Didn't want to "stick out" AKA been seen as a star/leader How She gets rid of negative thoughts: Just let it go... Block it out...Zone in on next action! Take a deep breath & Keep her action simple not overcomplicated. Smile & let people in so she doesn't close herself off to her teammates. Tool To Improve As A Human Being: Engage other people to get to know them a bit. Sleep & Morning ritual: 7-8 hours of sleep. Wake 1 hr before training. Get dressed. Eat breakfast. Read Norwegian News. Head to training 30 minutes before it starts. How does she adjust to a new city and/or team? Explore's the new city with her teammates so she get's to know the city and her teammates make memories. A Healthy Habit: I am a huge fan of smoothies, so often when I want something to "snack" on I make myself a thick smoothie. But generally my thought for staying healthy is everything in moderation. I have too much of a sweet tooth to stay away from ice-cream etc. Travel Tip: Make your own trail mix and bring fruit or other snack you enjoy to eat. It is good to always have something to eat in your backpack. That way you avoid buying unnecessary food on the go. And bring a water bottle.     Athlete Case Study : Volleyball Ep13 The Only Way To Make Yourself Happy with Ning "Nikki" Zhao Ning Zhao doesn't mess around when it comes to strangers approaching her online but after a thorough background check on who I am (Ryan Jay Owens) with her former NCAA D1 coach, Chris POOLE, and a big thumbs up that I was not some crazy person she agreed to this interview with a lot of excitement! She's been waiting a long time to tell someone her story to hopefully inspire other athletes to be goal oriented and not just think sports can offer them everything. Sometimes you must also drastically change your surroundings, like she did moving from China as an 18 year old to the USA, to play at a strong school so her education would be strong as well as volleyball. BIO Ning Zhao or "NIkki" as many refer to her was born Aug 20, 1976 in Beijing, China. She started to play volleyball as a nine (9) year old (!!!!)... She made the Chinese junior national team which was only 12 of the best young players in China (## Billion people Populate China!) before quickly deciding at 18 years old to not pursue the Olympics... She decided to pursue making sure her future after volleyball would be happy, healthy and full of opportunity and accepted a full scholarship to study & play in the USA. She started at Central Connecticut State university but quickly changed to Barton Community College for 2 years where she was a 2x All American. In her final 2 years of school at U of Arkansas -Fayetteville they were ranked 15th & 8th in the nation as a team.. making the Sweet 16 the 2nd Round of the NCAA tournament. She was ranked the 9th best setter in NCAA D1 volleyball her senior year & is one of only 3 players to hold the record of 3000 assists. She was honored with SEC 1st Team & AVCA All American, Now she's "a full time mommy" of a 9yr old boy and 2year old daughter after benign off and on assistant coach for a few years after her collegiate volleyball career. She plans on possibly coaching in the future and/or assisting young Chinese players to get to USA schools to play sports. "I saw the opportunities getting a good education besides volleyball... so I decided to come." How graduating from a USA college is why she is a happily married mother of two. Failing can make you stronger. "First you have to have a strong mind. You have to believe in yourself and be strong. I don't need (the coach). I don't need anyone (to do it for me)." "Just believe in yourself and there's always nice people around you." Do what you love on a daily basis to be happy "Cooking is AWESOME but so is volleyball!" She is interested in coaching and also helping young players come the study & play in the USA. Some little things can make people feel much better She should be more goal oriented.     Athlete Case Study: Croatian Pro & National Team Volleyball Player Dec 5, 2014 Back in 2011 we met in South Korea as players in their V-League. While in Croatia on a mini-vacay with two puppies three young girls & a husband/wife staying in a cute village near Split named the Kaštela's. She invited me to check out the city a few times during my mnth stay and we got to know eachother a bit better. She got that stern look but she a softie for sure! Brief Bio She grew up in Split, Croatia (one of the most beautiful areas of th southern Croatian coast....) as a daughter of a mother whose rules are never broken, a famous basketball player father and two brothers the focus was on being a complete person & well educated. Worked a bit at the family pizzeria as a kid. Learned to respect money and keep herself & her home tidy. Was a really skinny and weak kid but fast... picked up tennis & swimming.... through constant boring & lonely without friends travel with her parents a change had to made... A coach wouldn' t stop calling her even though she had reservations and relaly no idea of what volleyball was like... She had to live 12hrs away from her family to pursue volleyball and that was the toughest decision of her life at 15yrs old.
