Thanks for tuning in to another episode of By Their Side, friends. I am joined today by the great Gaelin Elmore, former NFL player and current passionate advocate for youth facing adversity. As a child, Gaelin was very much a part of the foster system, but his experience, while inspiring because of how he overcame such challenges, was not a happy one. Listen as Gaelin reflects on his journey through foster care and how he discovered an incredibly important truth, that belonging is the key to surviving and thriving. Gaelin reflects on how the concept of belonging changed his life, turning difficult situations into opportunities to grow, and he talks about a pivotal moment with his high school coach, who showed him the power of community and brotherhood at a time when Gaelin was ready to give up. That experience of his, along with the many others who supported him along the way, helped him realize that we all play a role in creating places of belonging. Throughout our conversation, Gaelin also discusses how this fundamental human need can truly change lives, encouraging us to look at our own lives and see how we can show up for others, whether we know their story or not. For anyone struggling with a sense of belonging, Gaelin Elmore offers practical advice on how to begin the necessary work to embrace who we are and seek places where we can truly be ourselves. This episode is a reminder that change is a journey, and small, consistent actions can have lasting impacts! Highlights: [1:55] - Gaelin's childhood was unstable, but he now uses his story to help others. [4:38] - Belonging has shaped Gaelin's life, making hardships bearable. [6:26] - Hear how Gaelin's understanding of belonging has grown over time. [9:41] - Belonging is often overlooked, urging reflection on those who provide it. [10:16] - Gaelin credits his high school coach for teaching him the importance of belonging and community. [12:30] - Gaelin's coach's support came at the right time, aided by others' earlier help. [15:43] - Even just small acts of support accumulate over time, contributing to significant long-term change. [16:36] - Noting that change is gradual and often unnoticed, Gaelin compares his growth to TV show character, Jamie Tartt. [19:20] - It's important to create inclusive spaces by showing kindness and commitment to all. [21:56] - True belonging is about being yourself in spaces where others can also be themselves. [26:40] - Gaelin embraces his strengths and challenges, creating honest connections without blaming himself when rejected. [28:58] - Internal work helps Gaelin separate his worth from relationships, recognizing when he truly belongs. [30:25] - Gaelin argues that acceptance of ourselves allows us to show up fully in relationships, embracing imperfections and insecurities. [32:05] - Consistently investing in others helps them recognize their value, even if they don't immediately recognize it. [35:07] - People who are used to positive reinforcement show up differently, but some others need help learning to receive it. [37:22] - Gaelin's coach's patience and commitment ultimately helped him feel seen and supported. Gaelin Rosenwaks, marine scientist, filmmaker, and explorer, is no stranger to Shorewords listeners. In June 2020 she talked about her passion for sperm whales that came from her experience as a two-year old who looked into the eye of a whale named Physty. During Covid, she travelled several times to Dominica to swim with and photograph some of the sperm whales that congregate offshore. The culmination of her trips to Dominica is a beautiful and interesting book about these ocean goliaths. On Shorewords!, Gaelin talks with Lesley Ewing about the making of her book, many of the amazing feats of these mammals from the depths that they dive, to the size of their hearts, to their sleeping habits; and some of her favorite books.

When a child is born into this world they are not in control of their circumstances. For some, their lives are sent into a whirlwind of struggles. Foster care, abuse, neglect.  All things that could lead to a very rough life. So how do we help change the trajectory of their path? How can we help influence their mindset so that they see their trauma for what it is and recognize that it doesn't define them?Gaelin Elmore uses his experience in adversity to help others grow.  Adversities will always be there in life, but how we chose to handle them can determine how we grow from them and potentially lead us into better versions of ourselves. “Don't underestimate the mindset influence you have on others” What is adversity? How can we use it to fuel our future? How to help others see their adversity as it truly is? And grow from it? Why your trauma does not define you, and how to recognize it for what it is? How to use your mindset to help others overcome adversity?“Have the courage to overreact.”Reach out and connect with Gaelin at:www.gaelinspeaks.comhttps://www.instagram.com/giv.elmore/https://www.facebook.com/GaelinSpeakshttps://twitter.com/GIV_ElmoreTo find out more about partnering or investing in a multifamily deal schedule a call here https://calendly.com/threekeysinvestments/get-acquainted-callDownload a free e-book on Why Invest in Multifamily at ThreeKeysInvestments.comPlease RSS: Review, Subscribe, Share!Support the show (and my reading addiction)! https://www.buymeacoffee.com/AskMeHowIKnow

Gaelin Elmore Born the youngest of 5 to a struggling household, it brought many of its own complications. After spending over 10 years in the foster care system, and experiencing physical, mental, and emotional abuse, I was as good a bet as any to be just another youth chewed up and spit out by the foster system.   However, I knew I didn’t want to be another statistic.   While battling homelessness, I continued attending school and found sports to be a great outlet. After being taken from my family again when I was 16, I became a national recruit for football. I signed to play at the University of Minnesota, graduated in 3 years with a degree in communications and started my grad degree - all while playing football and excelling on the field. I left grad school to sign a contract to play in the NFL... only to realize that that wasn’t what I felt like my purpose was.   I left the NFL and began working with youth from similar backgrounds to mine, assisting them in their pursuit of success. I now work closely with the foster care space, and speak professionally as an adversity expert and revisionist. What I learned through my life certainly resonates within the space of foster care, but what I learned from adversity rings true in all spaces.   I love anything competitive like sports and games. I enjoy creating such as writing, drawing, painting, and building. Besides speaking, spending time in good company is one of the most rewarding ways to spend my time. Since his very first memory, life for my guest, Gaelin Elmore, has been about the struggle for control. He couldn't control his parents' addictions. He couldn't control whether he went into foster care. He couldn't control where and with whom he was placed. He couldn't control what happened inside the home. He could only control his own behaviors, so that's what he held onto tightly. It was a way to cope, to temporarily ease the pain. What Gaelin didn't anticipate was that there were people, and far greater, a God who was worthy of his trust. He didn't have to be the one to muster up the strength on his own, but God in his kindness was there, holding him through all the hard. His trauma displays itself in relationships with people still, but Gaelin is not without hope, and he's running hard after the one who was in control the whole time.
