The second 11th Edition codex has landed, and it's full of poster boys in power armor! In this episode, we review the brand new Space Marines codex. Everything about this codex is big - big page count, big unit roster, and big changes to how the army plays. We dig into the returning Combat Doctrines system, look at the new detachments and how they can be used to build a variety of marine armies, and examine the changes to all the units in the book. One of the best things about getting back into the hobby was reading back through my old White Dwarf magazines.My collection spans from late 1993 to mid-1998, and one of the most loved and fondly remembered features of this period was "A Tale of Four Gamers".The concept of A Tale of Four Gamers was simple but effective. White Dwarf took four Games Workshop staff (Paul Sawyer, Richard Hobson, Roy Barber, and Richard Gunson) from different parts of the company, gave each of them a small monthly budget, and had them build, paint and eventually battle with a Warhammer army entirely in public view through the magazine.It ran for five months in 1998. Fifty quid to start, then twenty-five a month after that, working out at £150 total by the end*.Nobody was told what to buy or how to paint it, so all four ended up going in completely different directions: Roy Barber built Skaven, Richard Hobson did Wood Elves modelled on Robin Hood, Richard Gunson went Bretonnian, and Paul Sawyer (AKA Fat Bloke) painted Beastmen almost entirely in metallics.The whole point was showing the process honestly, budgets, mistakes and all, rather than just presenting a finished army under studio lighting. That's what made it feel achievable to readers in a way most hobby features at the time didn't.One fellow hobby content creator who's particularly fond of this feature is Sean of the Timeless Tabletop Gaming YouTube channel. I've had Sean on the show for a chat before, and he's an active member of the Bedroom Battlefields community Discord.Sean recently reached out to say he was running a series of deep-dive videos on A Tale of Four Gamers, the first of which earned him an enthusiastic YouTube comment from none other than Richard Hobson.Sean took the opportunity to reach out to Richard, which led him to get in touch with Richard Gunson and Roy Barber as well. Tragically, Paul Sawyer passed away last year - he was only 59.The trio were keen to talk to Sean about A Tale of Four Gamers, and he jumped at the opportunity to get them together for an interview that he could use for the final video in his series. He was looking for a little backup on the tech/recording side, and I was only too happy to help. Community-based volunteers are the social glue between individuals, groups and organisations. They boost community cohesion, bond people together and bridge differences. Within any community 20% of people are great at getting things done. Volunteers are ordinary people but they can achieve extraordinary things. Their super talents are simple: practical skills, local knowledge, common sense, familiarity with different situations, a myriad of contacts - and the ability to discover the stories and traditions that make a community special.Script 2The seminal example, of course, is using bow wow to mean a dog and not just to imitate a dog's barking, providing the impetus for the theory's moniker. In a somewhat similar vein, the pooh-pooh theory hypothesized that language evolved from the interjections (ah!) and emotional cries humans made, like the primordial grunt that still escapes when you painfully stub your toe. The Warhammer 40,000 live action series just went from "we assume" to confirmed. Henry Cavill has publicly stated he is starring in the Amazon MGM adaptation, not just executive producing it, and the character he is playing is staying under wraps for now. Alongside that, Mike Flanagan is on board writing, and per Games Workshop's own reporting, the outlines are finished and the project is moving into the scripting phase.Frank breaks down why Flanagan is a strong signal for the tone of this show. The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and Doctor Sleep are all dark, character driven work, and 40K lives or dies on whether it treats its grimdark setting as more than a backdrop for power armor. Flanagan has signed a multi-year deal with Amazon, so this is not a one and done gig.What is still unknown is the bigger question: which faction, which era, and which character. HEY SCUMMERS!This week we're diving headfirst into one of the weirdest rabbit holes in Warhammer 40,000: The Sensei. The Emperor's immortal descendants, blessed with incredible gifts, hunted by the Inquisition, and quietly swept under the rug by the lore when everyone collectively decided, "Let's just not talk about that anymore."The Sensei are fascinating because, unlike almost everyone else in the 41st Millennium, they might actually be good guys. Not "good" by Imperial standards, where the answer to every problem is orbital bombardment, but genuinely compassionate, selfless people who wander the galaxy toppling tyrants, helping the downtrodden, and generally being a massive inconvenience to dictators everywhere. Even if they do get too familiar with xenos.They're freedom fighters in a universe that has almost completely forgotten what freedom even means.Nathan spent a concerning amount of the episode watching Spamuel like he was about to get black-bagged by the Inquisition because I kept describing the Emperor as a bad dad. Look, if your immortal children spend their entire lives unknowingly fighting for justice while you spend ten thousand years glued to a chair, maybe Family Court has a point. Naturally, we also tackle the questions Games Workshop have refused to answer for nearly forty years. Can you befriend a Tyranid Spore Mine? We believe yes. Scientists believe no. The Spore Mine believes in the power of positive thinking right up until the point it becomes an expanding cloud of bio-acid. Then, in an attempt to prove not every parent in the galaxy is a complete disaster, we bring you the most inspirational dad moment in Warhammer history: a Necron Lord patiently teaching his favourite Scarab how to be friends with the flesh bags it's surrounded by. They grow up so fast. One day they're shyly nibbling at loose bolts, the next they're stripping a Baneblade before you've finished your command phase.By the end of the episode we've defended ancient rogue-era lore, argued that the Sensei might secretly be some of the last genuine heroes in the setting, accused the Master of Mankind of being history's most absentee father, attempted diplomacy with a living bomb, and become emotionally invested in a robotic beetle receiving the parental encouragement it deserves.Normal podcast.
