‘Once a nurse, always a nurse' is the attitude that Labor's Ged Kearney is bringing to her role as Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care. This week, Ms Kearney joined The Tea Room to chat nursing, aged care, worker advocacy and refugee healthcare. The area that she's most keen to sink her teeth into, though, is how healthcare is delivered differently between the sexes – the effects of which, Ms Kearney says, are “write large before our very noses”.“Starting at the top, [I am] getting everybody that I know who cares about this – and there's a lot of people out there that do care about this – to sit around a table and design perhaps an inquiry or a deep dive into [women's health outcomes],” she says. Before entering politics in 2018, Ms Kearney worked as a nurse on a gastrointestinal ward and was federal secretary of the Australian Nursing Federation and in 2010 was elected president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions.Experience in both healthcare and union work have influenced her priorities for the role going forward.“I'm interested in healthcare for [culturally and linguistically diverse] groups, for our migrant communities, for our LGBTIQ communities for people who, for various reasons, have really serious barriers in accessing the healthcare system, particularly the primary health care system,” Ms Kearney says.

So, here's the thing. Nurses and midwives account for 50% of the global health workforce. Did you know that? That's a lot! We're quite a force. What intrigues me more about that is that while we're 50% of the workforce, our representation at the policymaking, political level or the boardroom is... at best, scant. Our role bears witness to the real experiences of people who accessing health and community services at an international level across all geopolitical and social spectrums. Truly, we see it all. So why is our nursing and midwifery voice not being heard where decisions about how health and community services are delivered? There a lots of reasons, but one is opportunity. You can't just saunter in to a boardroom and just making decisions. Australian federal MP, Ged Kearney is a proud Australian example of one of our tribe who transitioned from nurse to policymaker. But Ged's journey was long, so how do we get our start in having the nursing and midwifery voice heard? Sue chats with one of our regulars here at the Nursing & Midwifery Emporium's podcast, Wendy McIntosh because she's got a solution for us that you might not have expected: Rotary for Nurses!

This is the third event of Victorian Fabians' Spring Series for 2018, co-hosted by the Labor Environment Action Network (LEAN), at which we'll discuss environmental sustainability and equality, with talks by Dr Bruce Lindsay and Ged Kearney MP. The 2018 IPCC report on climate change says we have about 12 years to act to keep climate change to 1.5 degrees. The action required to prevent increasing CO2 will be both rapid and dislocating but not anywhere near as dislocating as the effects of higher than 1.5 degrees of warming. Many of the impacts from climate risks and remedies will disproportionately affect the more disadvantaged in our society. This represents a threat to our progressive social democracy. How do we act on climate change and sustain a thriving diverse environment, human well-being and equality all at the same time?

Byelections are not just important in the obvious sense of their results, but also for the confidence of political players. On Saturday Labor and Bill Shorten face a major test in the Melbourne seat of Batman, traditionally Labor but with the Greens now threatening the ALP’s hold. A Labor loss would be a blow to the morale of the opposition - it would also open some debate within the party about Shorten’s performance and what should be done to combat the Greens at the next election. On the other hand, if the ALP’s Ged Kearney came home victorious Labor would be well placed to put the heat on Malcolm Turnbull if as is expected the prime minister loses his 30th newspoll in a few weeks. We went to Batman in the final days of the campaign and spoke to Kearney and the Greens candidate Alex Bhathal as well as former deputy prime minister Brian Howe, who once held the seat, and former Greens leader, Bob Brown.
