Today's guest on Moments of Clarity is Alexandre Fleck Soares Brandao (Alex Fleck). Alex moved to Australia in 2018 to pursue a PhD at UNSW Sydney under the Scientia Scholarship Program. His research focuses on how social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook have reshaped the way social movements pursue legal change. He has previously taught at UNSW Law, but is currently in the last stages of finishing his thesis. Alex is originally from Brazil, but has lived in different places. As a child he briefly lived in Southern California and as a young adult moved to the Basque Country, Spain, where he completed his Masters degree in Sociology of Law. Alex lives in Sydney, New South Wales with his partner Michele whom he met while protesting at the Federal Law School in his hometown of Porto Alegre, Brazil. They were both law students at the time and were occupying the building in a struggle against illegal changes to the faculty and fell in love. Alex's strong interest and knowledge in law, social media, and politics shines through in this conversation. He is articulate and values-driven yet demonstrates how important it is to understand the nuances and perspectives on various issues. Matt, Toby and Alex discuss: Social media and it's impact on activism, politics and society. Whether social media has democratised power or created a new paradigm of power. The difference between amateur and professional activists and how it leads to repression. In today's episode of Moments of Clarity, Matt and Toby talk to Fady Kassab. Fady is a stand-up comedian based in Sydney, Australia. Although he entered comedy later in life, Fady has certainly hit the ground running. As the 2019 winner of Triple J's RAW comedy competition, Fady soon went on to perform at The Gilded Balloon, one of the largest and best-known venues at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where he made the grand finals of the long-running ‘So you Think You're Funny' comedy competition. Fady has performed at Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney comedy festivals as well writing and starring on ABCs, Question Everything. As you will hear, Fady really does question everything and he has every right to. Fady was born in Lebanon and as a child had the horrific experience of having tanks roll past his house as Israel invaded. Fady talks about this being the end of innocence for him and as we find out during the podcast, the trauma of living through 17 years of war not only inspires Fady's comedy but really brings it to life. Along with stories of marriage, divorce, kids and the rising cost of living, Fady incorporates a social and political commentary that is based on lived experience. He understands that the purpose of comedy is not simply to make you laugh but to make you think as well. Raw, honest and opinionated yet humble, mindful and kind, Fady certainly made us think in this conversation. Today on Moments of Clarity, I speak to Dr Andrew Hattam. Andrew is an advanced trainee in Vascular Surgery with interests in trauma and transplant surgery. He holds a Bachelor of Biomedical Science in which he trained in lab-based research, and obtained his honours in epidemiology from the University of Melbourne. He studied Medicine in Cairns and holds a graduate diploma in applied anatomy by dissection. He also holds a PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology from the University of Melbourne. Andrew is passionate about medical and surgical education and sits on the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Surgery of Trauma education committee. He is also a founding member of the faculty of the Anatomy of Surgical Exposure Course in Cairns, helping to develop the curriculum and textbook. If you would like to follow some of Andrew's work he is on Twitter @andrewhattam. In Part 1 of today's podcast, we discuss Andrew's unique position working as a surgeon in major hospitals in both Melbourne and Sydney at the height of each city's Covid-19 outbreak. This first-hand perspective is a real eye opener and well worth the listen. I am in awe of our health care workers and am proud of all Australians who have done the right thing through this pandemic to ensure they feel supported and valued at this difficult time. My discussion with Andrew was recorded in late November 2021, so a lot of the Covid talk is pre-omicron. On that note, I hope everyone is safe and healthy. Book in your booster if you haven't already and let's get on top of this thing. In Part 2 of the podcast, Andrew explains vascular surgery, the daily life of a surgeon and how he got into the profession. Andrew's alternative pathway into the medical field is an inspiring one and illustrates that not everyone has to take the same road and sometimes all we need is someone to believe in us. Part 3 of the podcast delves into some of the experiences that make Andrew the surgeon he is today, including some incredible stories from his time in a trauma hospital in South Africa. Today on Moments of Clarity, I speak to Brad Scott. Brad Scott is the founder and operator of Transmutation Pty Ltd. Transmutation is a plastic recycling workshop and retail outlet based in Robe, South Australia. Brad has a deep concern for the environment and has committed to taking on the plastic problem head on. Transmutation takes difficult to recycle plastic waste and changes it into quality products that will last much longer than the original product and itself is designed to be recycled again. Brad and his partner Narelle aim to educate customers about recycling, reusing and reducing. What is so incredible about the work Brad is doing is that not only is it decreasing landfill and pollution but illustrating what the future treatment of waste products can look like while putting a value on what we currently call rubbish. Transmutation revolves around four pillars; Sustainability, Craftsmanship, Community and Innovation. Brad was born in rural Queensland and lived a normal life until tragedy struck as a teenager. Brad's life was turned upside down and he admits that things could have been very different today had it not been for a few chance events in his life. One of these was meeting his wife Narelle on a bus in 1985. Another was joining the army which provided an education, leadership skills and the catalyst for a very interesting life indeed. Brad has had a very successful but unconventional career and this has continued to this day. Brad and I discuss philosophy, politics, climate, challenging stereotypes, life, love and a whole lot more. If you want to feel inspired to take action while getting a decent dose of reality along the way, you do not want to miss this conversation. www.ozbreadtagsforwheelchairs.org.au https://www.transmutation.com.au/ Instagram: @transmutation_pty_ltd Facebook: @transmutation1969 Time Stamps Introduction: 0:00 - 2:32 Part 1: 2:33 - 45:17 Part 2: 45:18 - 95:06 Conclusion: 95:07 - 95:47 Moments of Clarity Instagram: @momentsofclaritypodcast Facebook: @momentsofclaritypodcast Twitter: @BarneyMOC Email: momentsofclaritypodcast@gmail.com Podcast by Matthew Sortino Music by Christian Prochilo Artwork by Michael Chrisanthopoulos

Anika is in touch with the land and understands its necessity. Anika understands the interconnection between the actions we take, the climate and in turn our food security. This is why she is dedicated to acting on and communicating the need for sustainable farming, environmental conservation and climate change action. Anika completed a Bachelor of Science specialising in Agribusiness, a Masters of Sustainable Agriculture, and a PhD in Agricultural Science. We explore Anika's move with her family from urban Melbourne to a farm near Broken Hill in Far Western NSW and the perspective shift that followed - that is the obvious interconnection between nature, food and people. Anika explains how her ‘connection to place' became the basis for getting involved in climate solutions. In Part 2, we discuss the necessary role of everyday people taking action and becoming community leaders, the groups on the ground working hard to find solutions, how we each have a unique capacity for positive change, why Anika is hopeful for our future, tackling climate in the way we tackled covid - with science, the expense of not acting on climate, how policy levers can improve agriculture and rural Australia, the solutions are in the hands of individuals, industry and policy makers together, a moment of clarity and more. Today on Moments of Clarity, I speak to Glenn Manton. Glenn Manton is a former AFL footballer playing 178 games for Essendon and Carlton. He was part of the 1995 Carlton Premiership team and forged a brilliant career on the field. Post-football he continued his athletic pursuits in multiple areas including competing in the four-man bobsleigh team for Australia. Although Glenn still keeps very active, training most days to get the best out of himself physically, it is Glenn’s mind and heart that make him truly unique. Glenn is not afraid to try new things. He talks about the need for courage and a ‘you only live once’ attitude to experience every day in its fullest - to really suck the marrow out of life. Glenn has Bachelor degrees in Teaching and Education, a Diploma in Mentoring and has worked in educational settings globally for over 25 years. He co-founded Whitelion, an organisation that works to support young people at risk in the Australian community with programs and advocacy. Glenn’s passion and purpose today is to use the power of story and personal experience to help young people learn to love themselves and in turn build positive relationships - which Glenn believes is the key to a good life. He has over 20 years experience speaking professionally in an incredibly diverse range of settings and I have seen first hand the wonderful ability Glenn has to pierce through to the core of human emotion in an instant. Glenn has written multiple books including Dead Bolt, Mongrel Punts and Hard Ball Gets, Tattoo Urself, Authentic, and Put Your Damn Phone Down and is in the process of writing another. Hello, my name is Matthew Sortino and welcome to Moments of Clarity. Today, I am speaking to Mary Tomaino, or as I know her Miss Mary Tomaino. Our lives are full of moments. Moments that help shape who we are today and many of these experiences are shaped by people. In most cases we are still connected to these people in one way or another but very occasionally, someone that was involved in your life for only a short amount of time can have a profound effect. This was true of my Primary School italian teacher, Miss Mary. I cannot express how amazing it was to have had the opportunity to be a student in her class. Even though she left when I was only 9 or 10, I felt a special connection and energy to this person. And I was not the only one. Friends that went to different primary schools but were taught by Miss Mary all have the same experience and fond memories. What was it that captivated our little minds and hearts? How can a teacher have such an influence? Well, as we will find out in our conversation, Mary made us feel like equals. She valued who we were as people, not as kids or not as students. She has lived her life in this way, exploring the world and treating others as equals. Paying deep attention to everyone she meets and their stories, whether it be the elderly people she works with today or the thousands of students she taught throughout her lifetime. I recently reached out to Mary and what do you know, she remembers so much about me over twenty years later, which is a testament to her character and values. In today’s conversation, Mary and I discuss dealing with the impacts of coronavirus, the wisdom of our elders, the power of stories, spirituality, her stint as a nun, being a clown and a mime, being an Italian-Australian, politics, travel, teaching and so much more. Rachel has dedicated her working life to specialising and providing unbelievable care to patients battling cancer. She has also worked in palliative care. I wanted to talk to Rachel for a number of reasons. Firstly, she is incredibly passionate about her work and more importantly, her patients. Secondly, anybody that knows Rachel knows she is the embodiment of happiness and in 2020, happy people are worth their weight in gold. And finally, we hear so much about our frontline health workers but very rarely do get to actually find out about their personal experiences on the ground. Today on Moments of Clarity, I speak to Shani Graham. Shani spent 20 years working for the Department of Education and Training as a teacher, school principal and teacher trainer. In 2006, she decided to make a "sustainable change" and set up a short term accommodation business with a sustainable focus. Shani and her partner, Tim, ran regular tours of the house and business, and were responsible for the very successful Hulbert Street Sustainability Fiesta, based in Fremantle, WA. This event attracted 7500 people to Hulbert Street in 2012, and motivated hundreds of sustainable changes. Shani is the founder of Ecoburbia and is best known for her work with Living Smart - a community based environmental education program. She is the only approved facilitator trainer in Australia, facilitating over 20 training weekends. I first learnt of Shani after watching her TEDxPerth Talk from 2013, “Take a Street and Build a Community”. I found it so inspiring and was so excited to have the opportunity to have a really good chat. If you enjoy our chat, it really is a must watch and describes Shani's work in helping to build community.Since then, Shani has moved to Beaconsfield, on a quarter acre block, developing an "unintentional community".During our conversation we discuss all of this and so much more! Today on Moments of Clarity, I speak to Rebecca Scott.Rebecca Scott is one of the most driven, compassionate and innovative community leaders I have had the pleasure of meeting. Bec, along with her partner Kate, co-founded STREAT, a social enterprise that works to help end youth homelessness and disadvantage. STREAT offers disadvantaged youth aged 16-25 a supported pathway from the street to a sustainable livelihood. The success of STREAT is incredible. Since 2010 STREAT has trained and supported over 800 young people, and helped serve meals and coffees to over 2 million customers. This is only the beginning with the goal to help a young person every single mealtime by 2022. That's 1095 people each year. What drives somebody to make such an impact? What lessons can we learn from someone who has absolutely aligned their actions with their values? I was absolutely honoured to have Bec share her journey with me. Bec and I discuss social enterprise as a model for positive change, the systemic issues we often face in society, the importance of trust, the power of our decisions, our need for belonging, why diversity matters and what our future might look like through the lens of an optimist. We also hear about Bec’s personal journey about coming out as queer in a conservative family as well as her many other experiences and beliefs.
