According to UK charity The Men's Health Forum, two thirds of all men are affected by male pattern baldness in their lifetime. That won't be a surprise to anyone, but would you have guessed that an estimated 50% of women also experience noticeable hair loss according to the Cleveland Clinic. We actually have around 100,000 hair follicles on our head, of which we lose between 50 and 100 every day, completely naturally. Hair loss isn't usually any cause for real concern on its own, but of course it can be caused by cancer treatment. Even if a person's health isn't affected by their hair loss, It can still be an upsetting experience. Some types of hair loss are temporary. This can happen when a person has an iron deficiency, is stressed or loses weight suddenly due to a restrictive diet for example. Isn't hair loss mostly hereditary? Are there any ways of stopping it? What about hair transplants? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: How much do surrogate mothers get paid? What is the Barnum effect? A Sinn Fein local councillor is claiming that the opening of a children's hospital is the real long term solution to relieve the numbers on waiting lists to receive spinal surgeries. This follows the decision that children awaiting spinal surgeries are to be sent to hospitals in the United States for treatment following the implementation of a similar scheme in the UK. The Department of Health has confirmed the package offered to eligible families will include the cost of flights and accommodation. Sinn Fein Councillor, Donna McGettigan, says that although opening a children's hospital is the correct long term solution, in the time it would take for the construction to finish, many children would become ineligible for pediatric care.
A Clare Regional Health Forum West member insists the findings of a HIQA review examining the case for a second emergency department in the Midwest are needed "as quickly as possible". It comes as the Chief Executive of the HSE has received the long-awaited report by former Chief Justice Frank Clarke into the death of Shannon teenager Aoife Johnston at University Hospital Limerick. Responding to Sinn Féin Councillor Donna McGettigan at the Regional Health Forum West AGM, UL Hospitals Group CEO Colette Cowan says the terms of reference of the review into urgent and emergency care capacity in the Midwest will be revealed once the Frank Clarke report is completed. Councillor McGettigan says now the report is with the HSE CEO, there's no reason for any more stalling on the HIQA review.

In this episode I welcome Dr Angela Wright from Spiced Pear Health. Angela is a GP, Menopause Specialist and Clinical Sexologist. She is particularly interested in improving sexual function and menopausal symptoms in women who have undergone cancer treatment. Angela is passionate about women's health and sexology and is frequently asked to teach or talk about this subject. She is a registered trainer for the BMS & FSRH, involved in training future menopause specialists and is an active committee member of the British Society of Sexual Medicine, and the education committee of the Primary Care Women's Health Forum. We covered so much in such a short space of time! We started by talking about the impact of localised (vaginal) oestrogen vs what systemic HRT does - both for GSM (genito-urinary syndrome of menopause) and for sexual dysfunction. For anyone wanting to know more about GSM, or pass information on to their GP, Angela recommends the British Society of Sexual Medicine consensus statement on GSM that's available on their website (linked below). She goes on to explain that there is no increase in recurrence risk for oestrogen receptor positive breast cancers when using localized oestrogen to treat symptoms (and that it can be used alongside letrozole and tamoxifen). We discuss the need for patients to be able to make an informed choice about risks vs benefits, which can be challenging when healthcare professionals are not taught to understand the impact that GSM and sexual dysfunction can have on quality of life - certainly male sexual dysfunction gets a lot more attention and usually pretty rapid treatment! We move on to discuss ‘sex tech' and the burgeoning menopause ‘market' in this area, including laser therapy (TLDR: more research needed, long term effects not known, it's expensive, and vaginal oestrogen would be more effective in the majority of cases). Angela gives an overview of what self-care practices can be helpful for someone struggling with GSM - listen in to find out some very little known information about the clitoris (and how to keep it healthy) that was totally news to me! She also explains that a range of prescription medicines (in particular antidepressants, but also antihistamines, and blood pressure medication) can mess with our sexual responsiveness, so could be something to discuss with our healthcare provider. For anyone struggling that wants to find out more, or support them in advocating for better care, Angela recommended a wide range of resources listed here: Mind The Gap, by Karen Gurney Better Sex Through Mindfulness, by Lori Brotto Becoming Clitorate, by Laurie Mintz Institute for Psychosexual Medicine website directory of practitioners https://www.ipm.org.uk/patients/specialists/ COSRT https://www.cosrt.org.uk/ - list of therapists British Society for Sexual Medicine (email admin@bssm.org.uk and ask for a local practitioner) Menopause-ull webinars https://www.mnetwork.org.uk/resources/recorded-webinars/ You might also be interested in our testosterone episode with Dr Katie Barber: https://middlingalong.com/episodes/middling-along-dr-katie-barber-helps-us-get-to-grips-with-testosterone-dos-and-donts/ You can find Angela online at https://spicedpearhealth.co.uk/ and https://www.instagram.com/spicedpearhealth/ If you enjoy the podcast and would like to help me keep it running (on a shoestring!) please consider buying me a ‘virtual coffee' at Ko-fi.com/middlingalong - or you can support me in a non-monetary way by sharing this episode, or writing a short review online! We love to hear from listeners and contacting us is easy here. We offer these shows for free. If you think it's worthy of a small contribution, we sure would appreciate it. This is Episode 25 of Season 4. In it, Daniel Dauphin is back, not to talk about bits and horse mouth anatomy but to talk about Buck the Trend, the mental health forum held last month. Daniel attended BTT and we have been visiting on the phone about mental health in our horse community since the Best Horse Practices Summit in 2022, which I directed and at which he presented two sessions. This is the third in a series of interviews around Buck the Trend, which is funded in part by the LOR Foundation. You can find interviews with the therapists and with another participant, Dan Flitner here. And next week, I'll post my interview with Sara Lowe, a Wyoming horse trainer and clinician who attended BTT. Buck the Trend got its start thanks to a generous grant from the LOR Foundation and with the support of Patagonia WorkWear. Donations have been extremely helpful, too. Big thanks to all who contributed. Thanks to our title sponsor, Lucerne Farms, producers of quality forage feeds, extremely handy and healthy bales of alfalfa, timothy, and grass blends. A great addition or substitute for your hay or grass and way better than grain. They also make products for your stalls and chickens. Check out Daniel and his bit course here. Check out his YouTube video on BTT. Check out his Best Horse Practices presentations. If you're interested in learning more about Buck the Trend, getting involved, coming to the next one, supporting BTT, or joining the conversation, head here to read our posts or hit the contact button to reach out. Thanks to Redmond Equine and Pharm Aloe – for generously sponsoring our podcast. Check out Pharm Aloe's aloe pellets which you can simply sprinkle on your horse's feed and Redmond's Rock on a Rope which you can simply hang on a fence. We think you'll love ‘em. Also thanks to Patagonia WorkWear for their continued support. Give us feedback, suggest a topic or guest, or make a donation and you'll be automatically entered to win one of two free Patagonia WorkWear items that we give away every month. Don't forget that Redmond Equine is sending a complimentary syringe of Daily Gold Stress Relief to everyone who drops a tip in our donation jar. Pretty cool and a $15 value. If you get something of value from our podcast, please consider making a donation. We sure would appreciate it. That's it. Another episode in the can and out of the barn. Thanks for listening y'all.

We love to hear from listeners and contacting us is easy here. We offer these shows for free. If you think it's worthy of a small contribution, we sure would appreciate it. This is Episode 23 of Season 4. In it, I interview Dan Flitner in one of several new episodes about Buck the Trend, the mental health forum held recently in southwestern Colorado. Buck the Trend, operated under the auspices of the Best Horse Practices Summit, attempts to address the following issues: -- Our work can be isolating and demanding and there are cultural, logistical, economic, and social impediments to getting help and being well. -- Our mental health and wellness impact not just us, but those around us, including family, friends, coworkers, and, of course, the animals. -- Horses may be “therapeutic.” They can make us feel better. But they can't necessarily help us build skills to navigate interpersonal relationships and feel better about ourselves. Buck the Trend is focused on skill-building and elevating the mental health conversation in our community. It's an opportunity to focus on ourselves for a moment, so that we can enhance and improve what's around us, specifically, the well-being of those close to us, humans and non-humans alike, as well as the greater horse community. Dan is a rancher in Oregon. He hails from Wyoming and has ranched all his life. Dan got involved in BTT several months ago as a supporter and consultant. His nephew, Luke Bell, a cowboy and rising star in country music, had serious mental health concerns and was found dead in Tuscon, Arizona, about 18 months ago. Mental health has been on his mind and on the minds of his family for some time. Let's first give a nod to our sponsors. We welcome Hoka and Skratch Labs the show. Jec and I consider ourselves athletes and we hope you do, too. Like they say with horses and hooves, for want of a shoe a horse was lost, for want of a horse, a rider was lost. Well, we think the same goes for happy human feet. When they're not in riding boots, keep your feet happy in Hokas. Also, did you know that Skratch labs offers milk and cookies? They have chocolate milk mix with probiotics, to which you simply add water. And they have cookie mix to which you add butter and things like chocolate chips and nuts. Or whatever you want. Check these new show supporters out at hoka.com and skratch labs .com Thanks to our title sponsor, Lucerne Farms, producers of quality forage feeds, extremely handy and healthy bales of alfalfa, timothy, and grass blends. A great addition or substitute for your hay or grass and way better than grain. They also make products for your stalls and chickens. Check them out at lucerne farms com I'll be featuring a few more interviews from Buck the Trend. Next up, KD Bryant and Joseph Prekup, the two therapists at BTT. Stay tuned for that next week. If you're interested in getting involved or supporting this effort, head here. Thanks to Redmond Equine and Pharm Aloe – for generously sponsoring our podcast. The Wall Street Journal's 2024 Health Forum in Boston recently showcased the technology, business, and policy regulations that are impacting the health care industry. With a massive disruption in the medical weight loss industry, new treatments that permanently alter patient DNA, and the ever-present COVID response and its aftermath, this year's conference had plenty of intrigue. For investors, there were several publicly-traded companies who took the stage — including CRISPR Therapeutics (Nasdaq: CRSP), Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: VRTX), Alphabet (Nasdaq: GOOGL) and Moderna (Nasdaq: MRNA). 7investing CEO Simon Erickson joins JT Street to break down the conference and review the key storylines investors should be following if they want to capitalize on the current disruptions in the medical investing landscape. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/7investing/message

In our latest episode of Supporting Champions, we had the opportunity to engage in a fascinating conversation with James Collins, recognised as a leading Sport & Exercise Nutritionist. In elite sport he has worked with Team GB Olympic teams and athletes over three Olympic Games. He joined Arsenal Football Club in 2010, where he spent seven seasons as the club's first performance nutritionist. He has worked as a consultant with England Football, France Football (2018 World Cup winners), and is currently a consultant with Chelsea FC. James is Managing Director of INTRA Performance Group working with talent from elite sport and entertainment from their Harley Street clinic. He was previously elected President of The Royal Society of Medicine's Food and Health Forum and is author of the acclaimed book ‘The Energy Plan‘ (Penguin Random House). Throughout our discussion, James shares his journey into the world of sports nutrition, providing insights into his experiences and the lessons he's learned along the way. His unique perspective, shaped by years of working with both individual athletes and team sports, offered a deeper understanding of the diverse nutritional strategies required in different sporting contexts. James has in recent years begun to branch out and apply his nutritional advice to businesses and take on interesting individual cases including a musician taking to one of the main stages in Glastonbury last year, the parallels between athletes and musicians seemingly not too dissimilar. https://twitter.com/jamescollinspn?lang=en http://jamescollinsnutrition.com/ https://www.intraperformancegroup.com/ https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/439206/the-energy-plan-by-james-collins/9781785042294 Hi, I'm Steve Ingham Sports and Performance Scientist co-founder at Supporting Champions. A Clare member of the HSE's Regional Health Forum West believes plans need to be put in place to cater for future service demand at Ennis General Hospital. Between January & March the county town facility operated at 105% capacity, 20% above recommended international best practice. Figures released by the UL Hospitals Group at this month's meeting also show that 9,471 patients presented at the Local Injury & Medical Assessment units in Ennis to date this year. Kilkee based, Fianna Fáíl Councillor , Cillian Murphy who queried the matter, says expansion strategies need to be identified immediately for the growing population.
Hiring new agriculture researchers ensures progress continues. New scientists also bring new knowledge, skills, perspectives, and energy. But having a PhD doesn't automatically make someone a good researcher, just like a Class 1 license doesn't automatically make someone a good trucker, or an agriculture degree doesn't necessarily make a good farmer. It's often better if a new, fresh-faced recruit has a chance to work with a grizzled veteran before they retire. Dr. Reynold Bergen is the Science Director for the Beef Cattle Research Council. He says succession planning in research is as important as succession planning on the farm and having experienced researchers available to mentor new researchers helps shorten the runway to productivity and success. - A 24/7 agricultural mental health forum launched was launched at Canada's Farm Show in Regina. Do More Agriculture launched a new peer-support mental health platform, Ag Talk.Do More Ag Executive Director Megz Reynolds says the platform, which is powered by Togetherall, provides a safe and anonymous space where anyone over 16 can connect, share, and receive support from a community of peers who relate to their unique experiences. A Clare member of the HSE's Regional Health Forum West claims health services not being staffed at weekends is "utterly bizarre". It comes after HSE CEO Bernard Gloster's call for staff to volunteer to work this bank holiday weekend to avoid a "dreadful" situation. The latest INMO figures show there were 90 people waiting on trollies at University Hospital Limerick this morning, amidst a spiralling overcrowding crisis. Kilrush Fianna Fáil Councillor Cillian Murphy says greater investment is required to provide health services at weekends, as well as during the week.

To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: Is using deodorant safe? “If you want to get a holistic picture of a person's health, you have to look at everything that concerns them, including for instance the issues of the local authorities - sanitation…water, everything to do with that. So we should not limit digital health to ministry of health. Toughen up. Be a man. Boys don't cry. Centuries of social conditioning have created a stigma around men's mental health and burnout. And it's killing them. 75% of suicides are men. Suicide is the biggest cause of death among men under 50. Men experience higher rates of cancer, heart disease and addiction - physical health conditions associated with high-stress lifestyles. Men's mental health, in our workplaces, society and homes, is the conversation we should be having. In a break from our normal format, this episode focuses on a conversation between Co-Host Al Elliott, and our expert guest, Jim Young. Just two 40-something guys discussing uncried tears, burnout and being very f@*king far from ok. It's a conversation you've likely never heard before. “For us as a country, we want to implement and deploy comprehensive systems. A system that actually encompasses everything. Not only focusing on one company. HIV may be a starting point, but we want these resources not only to be limited to HIV, but they should cover everything. And by doing that, we ensure that we are taking care of everything. If a mother is pregnant, is HIV positive, or also has TB - all these will actually be taken care of because we have brought all this work together and those who are providing the care will actually provide this care within the same framework and the same environment. That will definitely improve the situation.” - Simeon Yosefe, Head of Digital Health, Ministry of Health of Malawi Jonathan Jackson talks to Simeon Yosefe, Head of Digital Health for the Ministry of Health of Malawi, to discuss the challenges and opportunities of digitally transforming Malawi's health system. You'll hear about the importance of aligning digital health systems closely to the vision and digital health strategy of the government, how Malawi is creating policy guidance to ensure that its digital health systems work for Malawi, and why we need to take a comprehensive approach to digital systems. Malawi has been a leader in digital health laying out a bold digital health strategy and this episode is a must listen for any digital health practitioners working or wanting to work with Ministries of Health.

Some topics covered in this conversation include: How digital health has matured from conversations about “How do we successfully deploy a digital health pilot” to “how do we support digital health” which has now become a given. Connecting the dots for digital health - how do ministries of health take potentially fragmented digital systems and create better health outcomes with them The role of training - overcoming resistance, making technical topics interesting and engaging, and making the case to create top quality content Approaches to training including cohort-based social learning and emphasizing relationships alongside skills building The challenge of creating high quality community health worker training Telemedicine - managing tradeoffs between cost and impact over the long term Defining day 2000 success metrics on day 1 of a project and the importance of long term planning How the pandemic has forced ministries of health to get better at planning Related resources: TechChange: https://www.techchange.org/ Global Digital Health Forum: https://www.globaldigitalhealthnetwork.org/forum/ USAID: https://www.usaid.gov/ PATH: https://www.path.org/ Architects of Digital Health Board Game: https://architectsofdh.community.tc/catalog Jhpiego: https://www.jhpiego.org/

In today's podcast, we speak to Glenn Poole, CEO of the Australian Men's Health Forum (AMHF), the peak body for men's health in Australia. With the aim of improving male health across the lifespan, AMHF explores the how and why of male attitudes to health and how this may impact their quality & quantity of life. Linking up with a diverse network of individuals and organisations that work together, AMHF provides a central point for improved outcomes and the sharing of knowledge and programs across Australia. Glenn joins Melissa & Dr Jo as they tackle some of the tricky topics that can affect boys and men. This includes addressing the physical, social, spiritual, sexual, and relationship needs of males across the lifespan - from school to retirement and beyond. It is a little-known fact that men have a 4-5 year reduced lifespan vs females and are at higher risk for many diseases and poorer health in areas such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and suicide. Research shows that the best way to improve men's health is to tackle the underlying social factors like education, fatherhood, work-life, social connection and access to male-friendly services and Glenn discusses how he puts this into practice. For more information about AMHF, you can gain an info kit from www.amhf.org.au. A yearly National Men's Health awards event is the highlight of the AMHF calendar, so look out for it every June in Men's Health Week.
