Please join us on the Boardgames To Go discord server where you can chat online with other podcast listeners. David Arnott @Arnott When did you start listening to podcasts? Do you remember your first ones? For me it was the first one ever about boardgames and the first about movies. That was Geekspeak and Reel Reviews. Even though I'm not so into wine, Grape Radio was another super early one for me. The medium was new, the tech was unfamiliar, and I loved the chance to listen to interesting audio on my commute, about unique subjects. Although those earliest shows seemed to use a lot of fancy, expensive equipment, I wondered if a more basic podcast could be produced with simple gear. On March 3, 2005, I threw my hat in the ring with Boardgames To Go, a new audio version of my blog of the same name. The response was quick & positive, so I kept at it. Two decades later, I'm still here. Twenty years is an important milestone for me. I never really saw myself doing the podcast this long. I've averaged about 18 episodes per year over that time, including some early bursts of productivity and a few longer gaps. After the pandemic I renewed my commitment to the podcast and have stuck with a first-of-the-month schedule ever since, plus some bonus episodes along the way. My audience grew, then plateaued, then settled into a longstanding core of listeners. It's no exaggeration to say that you folks are the reason I've kept at it. I appreciate [your appreciation & encouragement, and I've enjoyed meeting some of you in-person. This month you'll have to indulge me talking podcast history, motivation, and a little future planning. I can't help it. Longtime friend Dave Arnott talks through it with me, and we may not refer to a single game title! Don't worry--there will be more game titles than you can shake a stick at soon (hint: Mark Madness). One of the only photos I have of me recording the podcast. This was from way back in 2006, when Dave & I recorded an episode about Vinci. We were at SoCal Games Day at the time, upstairs at the Burbank Moose Lodge. You may be able to see that I just have my laptop nearby, with a "Y-cable" audio splitter allowing us both to have headset mics piped into it. That's as fancy as I ever was for this podcast. -Mark

Don't try to impress me with big words Speak so I understand you Episode 172 (Gary is based in North Carolina) In this conversation with Gary Simonds we explore: Recognizing the language of your profession and expertise The challenge that language creates for your patients, clients, colleagues Speaking to be clearly understood is not brain surgery How clear understanding builds trust How an analogy can help convey the message  The damage when we assume that we speak the same language How ego of an expert can interfere with clear communication Are you aware of how many different technical languages you speak? Why you need to check with your audience on their understanding The power of analogy, simile and clichés Why you need to be prepared for how you present the message About our guest Gary Simonds: Gary is a neurosurgeon who created and developed a university-level neurosurgery department and residency training program at Virginia Tech and the Carilion Clinic in Virginia. He has written three non-fiction books and a a recently released novel, Death's Pale Flag, focusing on professional burnout and building personal resilience. Learn more about his books at https://garyrsimonds.com/ ----- Excerpts from this conversation with Gary Simonds: And quite often, you know, people would be there nodding as if everybody understood you would leave the room and they go, what the heck did they just tell us? ----- I think it also helps, after delivering your intended message to ask them specifically, what do you understand about what I've been telling you? What do you understand about the problem right now or the issue right now. And you can be really shocked sometimes, because you may think I've just made it as clear as can be. And they come back with something that is in no way close to what your message was. So then you're going to have to refine it and readdress it and repeat it. And Gary, I can see that same a similar scenario playing out in a meeting room. Perhaps the the president of the company, or maybe the VP of engineering has come in and explained a project or a problem. And simply believe that because they explained it for themselves that everyone in the room understands. And perhaps that's a good time to go to the room and saying, Who here would like to tell me what your understanding is of what I just said? And if anyone's brave enough to go and say that, then that leader might find that they didn't get across their message? I absolutely thinks that you have to have been in those scenarios, haven't you, George? Very much. So yes. And and there are times and I admit there were times when I was reluctant to speak up? Because I didn't want to be the only person that I thought who didn't understand. And so you're not going to say I didn't understand, please explain it to me, because you're you're the junior guy. Right? And you don't want to be the one person with and yet you look around the room and you notice that nobody else is getting it. ----- ----more---- Your host is George Torok George is a specialist in executive communication skills. Psalm 100:1-5 was the text we used now for the last few episodes. We actually didn't do this on purpose but it worked out this way. Or we lack any sense of creativity and variety with our bible verse usage. But this episode was full of fun. We are wrapping up our Sound Tech Series with an interview turned audition with our good friend Eric Munoz. If you want to feel like you know absolutely nothing about soundboards just invite this guy on to talk about sound teams; I now  know I don't have a clue about soundboards. But that's why I keep Eric's number on speed dial.  We recorded this episode in Eric's living room while enjoying  fresh coffee and pastries courtesy of doordash (aka Eric's wife). But don't worry it wasn't all about too much brainy sound team stuffs. When it comes to Sean and Adam, brainy doesn't actually exist. We had a ton of fun talking about how Eric serves into many ministries and got some real solid gold advice about sound team setup. We also talked about being picked last, who's humbler, favorite button is mute, festival patches, making your bed (music bed), no call backs, un-fathered, checking your ego cuz you're not special, dummy fader, sound tech is a form of worship, and so many more mic drop moments. We think Eric might stick around for a while hopefully to continue to embarrass us. We're glad you could join in on the conversation  and thanks for sticking with us through such a lengthy audition process. We also hope that amidst all of the laughter, sips of coffee, crunches of pastries, and really terrible dad jokes you might find some sense of sanity and glean from us at least one or two important things. Thanks and Blessings...Support the show

In honor of the passing of Tim Sale, we here at Comic Geek Speak are digging into the archive once more. All the way back in 2006, the team of Bryan Deemer, Jamie D, Matt, Peter Rios and Shane gave us an in-depth look at Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's Superman For All Seasons for the Book of the Month Club. And as we here in America celebrate our Independence Day, we could use some of the hope, joy, and light that this story brings forth, so it is extra fitting indeed to re-air this one. Here's to you, Tim, and thank you. (1:28:50)
