Is Turkmenistan finally closing the “gates of hell”?

In the middle of the Karakum desert in Turkmenistan, there's a massive fiery pit officially called the Darvaza Crater - but also known as the “gates of hell”. The fire - which is man made - has been burning for over 50 years. But now satellite images suggest that the brightness of the crater has started to dim. Turkmenistan is trying to finally put out the fire. Alex from the What in the World team tells us all about how the fire started and why it's taken so long to put it out. We hear from explorer George Kourounis who is (as far as we know) the only person to go down into the pit. And BBC journalist Alistair Coleman gives us some facts about Turkmenistan and its leaders. Originally aired May 10, 2018One of our favorite recurring guests, George Kourounis, is back on the show today. George recently returned from Nepal where he visited Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas to film a TV show. They decided to try visiting the base camp with no acclimatization. So they took a helicopter up with no time to adjust. George immediately experienced the effects of hypoxia during this trip. George was also fortunate enough to meet Kancha Sherpa on this helicopter ride. Kancha Sherpa is the last surviving member of Sir Edmond Hillary's 1953 expedition to be the first people to reach the summit of Everest. On our last show with George, he was preparing to head to North Korea for a rare opportunity to mountain trek, climb and camp. He was approved by the government and was able to travel there in May of 2017. He fills us in on what it was like to be a western-world guest in this secretive country during tumultuous political times. His experience is an interesting one that most of us never get to hear much less experience. Listen in to hear about what the mountains and surroundings are like over there.George tells about his continued trips to volcanoes including 11,384 ft Mt Nyiragongo which is an active volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He explains that the lake nearby, Lake Kivu,  which is susceptible to exploding due to the vast amounts of dissolved carbon dioxide at the bottom. The volcano holds the world's largest boiling lake of lava.He traveled down the Road of Bones to visit a village in the middle of Siberia, Oymyakon, which is known as the coldest place on earth. He tells us a story about visiting a preserved woolly mammoth frozen in the permafrost and when no one was looking, George snapped off a little mammoth to have a taste. Listen in to hear what that experience was like for him. Then we discussed the difficulty of ice climbing on icebergs to place satellite tracking devices on them for tracking the path of the icebergs as they float through the ocean. It's never a dull hour when our friend George Kourounis joins us on the show. www.furiousearth.comwww.cloud9tours.comwww.youtube.com/user/gkourouniswww.twitter.com/georgekourouniswww.facebook.com/explorergeorgekourouniswww.explorers.orgIs the price of gear holding you back from going on your next adventure or have extra gear you don't need? Most explorers study the weather charts to look for clear weather before starting an expedition. Our recent guest on the Explorers podcast, George Kourounis, does the exact opposite! His passion and appreciation for science and nature have helped him become one of the world's most famous storm chasers.  George, the host of the television show, Angry Planet, sat down with Explorers podcast host Richard Wiese. They talked about his attraction to the extreme elements and his obsession with the line between natural force and natural disaster.  As a child, George always had a fascination with science and nature. He loved being outdoors, where he grew up in Canada.  As a young teenager, his mother gave him the gift of a waterproof camera, which opened up a whole new world of possibilities for him.  When chasing tornados, George recounts the full-body experience involving all the senses.  These tornados are exciting and photogenic – while evoking terror and the realization that they can kill.    His teams are all first aid trained. When they are on the scene at an extreme weather event and see someone who needs help, they stop the chase to help a person in need.  At the heart of it, explorers are storytellers. It's been said of George that he communicates science well.  He's made a career of it. He tells us the trick is to report without letting your ego get in the way and making it about yourself.  As Richard spoke with his guest about the COVID pandemic, George remarked that the pandemic is an extraordinary force of nature and has encouraged in all of us the essential skill in an expedition… The ability to adapt to ever-changing conditions.  George hopes to leave a legacy of curiosity.  He views curiosity and fear as two sides of the same coin. His hope is that people grow to know why curiosity matters and why we should love being curious.  To learn more about explorer George Kourounis and his adventures as a storm chaser and explorer, visit his website. Watch the television series Angry Planet on Amazon Prime Video for an in-depth study of his exploration. To hear about other explorers, join us for new episodes of Life's Tough: Explorers are TOUGHER! He is the author of the guidebook, Born to Explore: How to Be a Backyard Adventurer. He became the youngest person to become president of the Explorers Club in 2002. Richard is also Executive Producer and Host of the PBS weekly television series Born to Explore with Richard Wiese.

Climate change has been called the defining issue of our time. Its scope, complexity, and impact pose an enormous challenge to humanity. Political, economic, ecological, agricultural and health systems are already being affected in unprecedented ways. In this episode, we sat down with climate experts and activists to discuss these issues. First, we heard from George Kourounis, renowned global adventurer, storm chaser, and host of Angry Planet, who clarified the difference between climate and weather, and described the impacts of climate change we’re already feeling. Next, we listened in on a talk by Gideon Forman, a Policy Analyst at the David Suzuki Foundation and former Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE). He discussed the magnitude of climate change in the context of health. Dr. Chung-Wai Chow, a lung transplant physician and leading research scientist at the University Health Network, whom we heard from in episode 38, elaborated on the effects of wildfires and pollution on respiratory health, based on her research in Fort McMurray. You’ll also hear from Dr. Edward Xie and learn more about how other vulnerable populations are being impacted by climate change from Indigenous communities in Canada to climate refugees across the globe. Dr Xie helped us understand how increased flooding, droughts, and spread of infectious diseases are further stressing fragile health systems based on his work as an emergency and family physician at the University of Toronto and board member of CAPE. While the situation is serious, there’s much we can do to help fight climate change, from personal lifestyle changes to community activism to international accountability. Along with our other guests, Carol Devine, Humanitarian Advisor for Doctors Without Borders and Community Scholar in the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research at York University, shared her insights and recommendations on how we can tackle the climate challenge together. This week, in honor of Halloween, we're presenting two stories about facing fears for science. Part 1: As a newly minted PhD student in geology, Erik Klemetti starts to question his decisions when Aucanquilcha, a 20,000-foot volcano in Chile, proves difficult to tame. Part 2: Explorer George Kourounis finds himself growing increasingly anxious as he prepares to enter a fiery sinkhole known as the “Doorway to Hell.” Erik Klemetti is an associate professor of Geosciences and volcanologist at Denison University. He works on volcanoes all over the planet, from Chile to New Zealand to the Cascades of Oregon and California. His research focusses on how crystals record the events inside a volcano before and between eruptions. For the past 9 years, he’s been teaching all the “hard rock” classes at Denison. He also writes for Discover Magazine. His blog, Rocky Planet, have been running since Fall 2017. Before that, he wrote Eruptions, a blog about volcanoes, for Wired Science for 9 years. You can also find him on Twitter (@eruptionsblog), variously tweeting about volcanoes, baseball (mostly Red Sox and Mariners) and his love of punk. George Kourounis is a renowned global explorer and storm chaser who specializes in documenting extreme forces of nature including: tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanoes, deserts, caves, avalanches and more. He is an Explorer In Residence for The Royal Canadian Geographical Society, the Chairman of the Explorers Club Canadian Chapter, and has received several awards and medals for his efforts. He frequently finds himself driving into the eye of fierce storms, or descending ropes into actively erupting volcanic craters, often while hosting television programs including “Angry Planet” and others.  He has given four TEDx talks, and has addressed the United Nations Environmental Emergencies Forum. George’s expeditions have taken him to 70 countries on all seven continents to such far-flung places as: Madagascar, Turkmenistan, Vanuatu, Greenland, North Korea, Myanmar, and Antarctica. One of our favorite recurring guests, George Kourounis, is back on the show today. Listen in to hear about what the mountains and surroundings are like over there. George tells about his continued trips to volcanoes including 11,384 ft Mt Nyiragongo which is an active volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He explains that the lake nearby, Lake Kivu,  which is susceptible to exploding due to the vast amounts of dissolved carbon dioxide at the bottom. The volcano holds the world's largest boiling lake of lava. He traveled down the Road of Bones to visit a village in the middle of Siberia, Oymyakon, which is known as the coldest place on earth. It's never a dull hour when our friend George Kourounis joins us on the show.   www.furiousearth.com www.cloud9tours.com www.youtube.com/user/gkourounis www.twitter.com/georgekourounis www.facebook.com/george.kourounis.7 www.explorers.org
