Thanks to Maxxis Tires, FOX and Jenson USA for supporting The Inside Line MTB podcast! While visiting Mountain Creek Bike Park in New Jersey, for a Vital Enduro Fork Test Session project, I caught up with local legend, George Ryan. I met George in person about 20 years ago, but knew of him before that because of his online persona in old-timey forums and his presence in videos like the Chain Reaction series. Over the years we'd see each other at events or on photo shoots, so it was a massive pleasure to sit down with him and hear his full story. To my surprise, he's a big-time MTB keepsake collector and he showed up with old jerseys, DVDs, magazines and even a Shaun Palmer baseball card. We discuss his journey into mountain biking, turning pro and eventually becoming the main man in charge of trails at Mountain Creek. Enjoy the episode and hit up Vital MTB to soak up some of his old relics he has stashed away. I've put some of my photos from 2005 decline work down below too. Thanks so much, Muffin!(If you want to see epic late 90s early 2000s downhill race TV broadcasts that he recorded as a kid, hassle him on Instagram so he'll get them uploaded : )

Evite has big plans to be more than just a free digital invitation service. The online platform has been around since 1998, providing essentially the same service: online invitations. But the business has had many ups and down. Two years ago, David Yeom and George Ryan purchased the business -- Yeom hails from e-commerce businesses like the Honest Company and eBay; Ruan co-founded Honey. Yeom joined the Modern Retail Podcast this week and spoke about the company's transformation. "Evite, from a user activity standpoint [and] from a financial standpoint, has never been healthier, more profitable in its history," he said. The two believed Evite was in need of fundamental changes. For one, the company's revenue was long ad-based. But, as Yeom said, that was "too much compromising on the user experience." Additionally, Evite's look wasn't current -- it looked dated, he said. "For a brand that has the history that it has -- is it still cool to the younger millennials and younger moms?" Yeom said. With that in mind, Yeom implemented some major changes. For one, he wanted to focus more on commerce than ads. Now, the company both facilitates gifting -- it has become Amazon's biggest gift affiliate -- as well as earns revenue from premium digital invitations. True, 90% of Evite's customers still opt to use free cards, but 10% now shell out for a nicer design. In addition, Evite changed its entire look and feel. Before, the company had outsourced most of its design. "The priorities were just a little baffling," Yeom said. Now, it's all done in-house and the company has a more up-to-date look and feel. The hope is to attract more younger users -- Yeom said that one-third of the invites sent today are for children's birthday parties. With all this, Evite has been able to grow its business. It turned a profit in 2021 and now has big international ambitions. The company plans to expand to other English-speaking countries like Canada, Australia and the U.K. "We're a party company, and Americans aren't the only ones that want to party," said Yeom.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker's budget proposal likely will be a key plank of his re-election platform. Not only does it contain goodies for everyday Illinoisans – a property tax rebate for roughly 2 million people, plus a one-year break on grocery and gas taxes – the governor says it demonstrates he's made good on a pledge to dig the state out of the financial morass of the budget impasse during Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner's administration. Here to analyze that budget is Laurence Msall, president of the Civic Federation, a government watchdog group founded by the Commercial Club of Chicago. Msall worked for Governors Jim Thompson and George Ryan on economic development issues, and has deepened his knowledge during his time at the Civic Federation. Republicans in the general assembly and the gubernatorial primary say the governor's proposal is an election year gimmick that doesn't fix the state's structural issues. Msall agrees, but only in part. There are goodies, yes, but he gives the proposal good grades on addressing the state's bill backlog, pensions, rainy day fund, and likely, its unemployment insurance fund. But there are warnings: the state needs more transparency around its infrastructure plans; the budget doesn't restart a stalled conversation on larger property tax reform; and there might be challenges in getting this budget through a general assembly who might be eager to spend, rather than stowing money away.

George Ryan was a Republican Governor of Illinois. He started his career as an advocate for the death penalty. But during his time as Governor, between cases of wrongful convictions and a torture scandal in Chicago, he came to the conclusion that the death penalty was flawed and first he put a pause on the death penalty, then he commuted the sentences of everyone on death row to life and ended the death penalty in Illinois. He writes: “I realized that capital punishment was a bad idea, not because there weren’t cases where death was arguably a fit punishment, but because we would never design a legal system able to identify only the right cases for execution.” Last fall, he and journalist Maurice Possley published the book, "Until I Could Be Sure" which captured his thinking as he transformed from advocate to crusader against the death penalty.

Jeanne Bishop, Attorney, Author, Social Justice Leader On Friday, January 6, 2017, at Noon At the Union League Club The First Friday Club of Chicago Welcomes Attorney and Author Jeanne Bishop Who will address the topic “Forgiveness: The impossible virtue” Many people in Chicago remember the horrible events of an unspeakable crime that took place in the northern suburbs 26 years ago. Newspaper and television coverage was extensive and emotionally exhausting. The story is familiar but the names of the people involved appear to have been forgotten. Our speaker, Jeanne Bishop and her family, seemed to be living the American Dream. She and her siblings were born and raised in a quiet, safe, well to do suburb. She attended Northwestern University and had a good job at a top Chicago law firm. The world changed for them on a dark night in 1990, just before Easter. After a family dinner to celebrate the impending birth of her younger sister’s baby, tragedy struck. Jeanne received a phone call the next morning. Her sister Nancy, brother-in-law Richard, and the unborn baby were gone. Murdered in their own home, in the sleepy village of Winnetka. … How? … Why? Did the family experience crushing sadness? Yes. Was there anger and bitterness? Maybe at first. Was there a Desire for Revenge?? Jeanne will share her long journey of Forgiveness. A journey that started when she told the police investigators that she didn't want to hate anybody. Along the way she spent time with the author of Dead Man Walking, Sister Helen Prejean, lobbied Gov. George Ryan about the death penalty, and met others who challenged her to examine her faith and Christian beliefs. Would you have the courage or compassion to go to the prison where your sister’s murderer was incarcerated? Could you tell him he was Forgiven? Is Forgiveness an impossible virtue?

He saw a hole in the market and was willing to step out and launch his idea. He was willing to make mistakes and learn as he went and now he has an awesome business that serves hundreds of thousands of people. On November 8, 1985, 18-year-old Tom Odle brutally murdered his parents and three siblings in the small southern Illinois town of Mount Vernon, sending shockwaves throughout the nation. It remains one of the most horrific family mass murders in U.S. history. Odle was sentenced to death and, after seventeen years on death row, expected a lethal injection to end his life. However, Illinois governor George Ryan’s moratorium on the death penalty in 2000, and later commutation of all death sentences in 2003, changed Odle’s sentence to life. Prior to the commutation, Odle lived in denial, repressing any feelings about his family and his horrible crime. Following the commutation and the removal of the weight of eventual execution, he was confronted with an unfamiliar reality. A future. As a result, he realized that he needed to understand why he murdered his family. He reached out to Dr. Robert Hanlon, a neuropsychologist who had examined him in the past. Dr. Hanlon engaged Odle in a therapeutic process which became the basis of their collaboration on this book. Hanlon tells the gripping story of Odle’s life, the life experiences that formed his personality, and his tragic homicidal escalation to mass murder-SURVIVED BY ONE-Dr. Robert Hanlon

Four years ago (at age 22) George Ryan was working full time (55 hours a week) for a lumber yard, making $10/hour to provide for his wife and daughter, and had no sort of higher education. He decided he hated his job, and intentionally set out to start an internet company. Four years later, still with no sort of formal education, he now has a thriving business in Hatchwise and make six figures. On top of all that, Hatchwise has been featured in articles twice in Inc. Magazine over the past two years. Nice! Listen in as George shares how he did it, and lessons learned along the way. The post #121 From timber yard lackey to six figure business owner.
