Grant Thomas: Finding Center Through Primal Movement - Ep124 This episode of Cycling in Alignment is a conversation with natural movement practitioner Grant Thomas. We had an excellent conversation about his journey of integrating primal movement and animal flow in his movement practice. We also spoke quite a bit about the concept of finding center, from the lens of movement as well as the lens of energetic or philosophical points of view. Grant shares some of the challenges he has faced as a creative entrepreneur who builds content. We also talk about the synthesis of knowledge and the value it has towards an audience. Grant also shares some of the daily practices he integrates in his own life. As someone who has studied and taught movement for over a decade, his answers provide insight that may be helpful for the audience. Thank you for listening. Maya Angelou famously said, “Now that I know better, I do better.” It's a sentiment that perfectly captures the spirit behind EmbraceRace, a nonprofit dedicated to nurturing children who are thoughtful, informed, and brave in taking on all aspects of equity and justice. On this episode of What the Fundraiser its founder, Andrew Grant Thomas, helps us explore difficult conversations – why we need to have them and what they can look like. It's not always going to be pretty, and that's okay! In fact, says Andrew, that's the point. Progress is a process that requires us – as fundraisers, parents and community members – to chip away at false assumptions and structural racism in all its ugliness. The more we engage, the quicker we can break through to meaningful dialogue and understanding. Andrew shares fascinating insights from the frontlines of early childhood, where honest conversations need to start. You'll learn about EmbraceRace's four foundational pillars and how this vibrant nonprofit is guided by them. He also invites us to “imagine if we understood race in a way that allowed all the range of emotions to show and not disproportionately things like fear and anxiety and resentment.” We also discuss the concept of giving ourselves grace, which is not an excuse to step away when we mess up. To the contrary, when interactions around race (or any other sensitive topic) go awry, we must be brave and push forward. So long as there's an effort to repair, says Andrew, an opportunity exists to grow and improve. In other words, it's progress – not perfection! (02:01) A brief intro to EmbraceRace (04:25) About the pillars Andrew and his organization deploy in helping people be brave about difficult conversations (09:21) How EmbraceRace helps people move through any resistance and face head-on issues. (12:24) Where resistance comes from (17:41) How kids (versus adults) understand and respond with openness and curiosity to narratives around race and justice. (20:06) Why it's okay to have uncomfortable conversations. (22:04) Great advice about confronting race that applies equally to fundraising (25:46) About knowing that things will come out right IF we keep on trying and making repairs along the way. (29:44) What accountability looks like and Andrew's assessment of DEI, educational and other efforts to combat structural racism and the very real ripple effects across society. A versatile ruckman come full forward, Peter 'Spida' Everitt started his football journey with St Kilda in 1993. With dreadlocks and head bands Spida almost instantaneously became a cult figure. As Everitt's career was building, so too was the St Kilda Football club as the Saints made a charge to the 1997 Grand Final. A shoulder injury sustained in the Qualifying final against Brisbane would lead Everitt to miss the rest of the season thus making St Kilda's road to the elusive flag all that harder. After 180 games in the black, red and white of St Kilda, Everitt was on the move to Glenferrie Oval in 2003 where he'd win a best and fairest. After four seasons at Hawthorn, Everitt's final stop would be at the Sydney Swans capping off a 291 game career. In this episode Everitt opens up about his heat break on missing the 1997 Grand Final, the sacking of Stan Alves, wooing Malcolm Blight St Kilda and his strained relationship with Grant Thomas which would eventually lead to Spida's departure from the Saints. Aside from the opening two-minutes of the game, it was a real four-quarter performance from the Saints as we demolished the Hawks at the MCG on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Plus we speak to "Ivy's boy" - and 48 game Saint, of course - Brett Moyle, about a range of topics from Malcolm Blight and Grant Thomas, to a rising star nomination, to injuries that ultimately prematurely ended his AFL career. Something I've discovered within my psychedelic experiences is that what we are ultimately experiencing is the moving of energies through our minds, bodies & spirits. This being said, many times I have found myself judging myself for my wanting to move, stretch or even have a full on sprint during a ceremony. Once I was able to break through that & realize that when I am craving physical movement, to dive into that & allow the energies within me to be moved, I experienced an immense sense of freedom. On this weeks episode of the show, we chat with a dear friend & brother of mine who is no stranger to expressing himself through his movement practice, especially while interacting with plant medicines. What he has taught me is not only how integral it is to listen to our bodies calls to move, but also how to have more FUN in my movement practice while interacting with these medicines without self judgement. My goal for this episode is to allow the conversation, laughs & movement between us to inspire all of YOU to re-imagine how you are viewing the movement of energy within you so that you can each find the same renewed sense of freedom that him & I have found within our movement & lives as a whole. When it comes to the medicines I enjoy most, nothing beats movement. For me, movement is a way I express my unique, individual experience of life. Movement is what helps me connect with other humans who are allowing the vibrations of life to sing through them & movement is ultimately what has allowed me to see myself reflected in others & have the ability to experience the oneness that all the great consciousness teachers of the past spoke about so elegantly. Today's guest on the show is not only a returning guest who specializes in movement, but is also leading the charge in helping men re-discover the beauty & freedom associated with dance through his program, disco for dudes. I know for me, I had many stories running in the background of my life at one point that told me I couldn't dance so therefore I shouldn't & have learned first hand just how liberating it is to be able to throw those stories to the curb & dance like my life depends on it & much of that influence came from this free flowing expressive soul that I am fortunate enough to call my brother in flow. This episode was produced at the Mass Music Radio Station in Quincy, Massachusetts.
