Roderick Owen (born 31 January 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda, Melbourne and the Brisbane Bears in the Victorian/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL). Owen, who had only recently turned 16 when he made his league debut for St Kilda in 1983 against North Melbourne at Arden St Oval, suffered from various injuries early in his career and missed the entire 1985 VFL season. Owen had to wait until his 17th game, in 1986, to experience a win, with St Kilda having lost the previous 16 games he had played in. A Mentone Grammar recruit, Owen kicked a career high 39 goals in 1987, the second most by a St Kilda player that year behind Tony Lockett. After leaving St Kilda in 1990 Owen played out the season at Victorian Football Association (VFA) club Frankston and was then traded to Melbourne for Stephen Newport. He kicked two bags of five goals for Melbourne in 1991 against Carlton and North Melbourne. After just one year at Melbourne he was traded to Brisbane for the 1992 AFL season. Owen had a particularly strong game against Fitzroy at Princess Park when he kicked eight goals and six behinds, a club record against the Lions. Once he finished in the AFL, Owen played for Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) side Wanderers Football Club, where he was club leading goalkicker in the 1994/95 season with 39 goals, also at Broadbeach Cats Cairns, Noosa Tigers and Cheltenham Football Clubs. As a child in the 1970s, Owen attended Beaumaris Primary School, where he was one of a number of children to have been sexually assaulted by the school's librarian and sports coach, Darrell Ray. Trauma from these events, combined with the party culture at St Kilda in the 1980s, led to a decades-long battle with addiction to amphetamine and pain killers. In December 2000, Owen was sentenced to nine months in prison for assault, which he served at Dhurringile prison farm. Owen entered rehabilitation for his substance abuse issues in 2018, and has discussed his experiences with the media since the allegations against Ray from his time at Beaumaris PS become public in around 2020. In later years Owen has worked as a concreter and boxer. In 2021, he received a written apology from the St Kilda FC relating to a lack of support for his personal issues during his time at the club. He has also pledged his brain to the Australian Sports Brain Bank for post-mortem research

Wow. That was a frustrating, depressing result. We do our best to dissect the Blues disaster, and move on to a new week - we're still in the hunt, still in the eight - with our 2023 AFL Finals future still in our own control. This week we're joined by 52-game Saints forward Craig O'Brien, who tells us about playing with Plugger, St Kilda FC's culture, and a hilarious story about getting suspended for chasing an umpire around the streets of Melbourne after a VFL game in 1992.Please remember to rate and review our show on whatever platform you're most comfortable with (iTunes, Facebook, Spotify etc), and always give us your feedback - good, bad or ugly - keep sending in your questions or comments on social media! An ugly loss to the Lions reminded us we're still a way off the AFL's Top-4, but it was the passing this week of former St Kilda FC assistant coach Matt Rendell that really gives some perspective. 'Bundy' had a great impact on many footballers, including our guest this week, 15-game Saint, Allan Murray. Please remember to rate and review our show on whatever platform you're most comfortable with (iTunes, Facebook, Spotify etc), and always give us your feedback - good, bad or ugly - keep sending in your questions or comments on social media! We started the season on fire but we've limped into the bye week after a putrid performance at home against the Hawks. At the break we sit in fifth spot on the AFL Ladder with 7 wins and 4 losses. It was an ugly game of footy but we walked away with a very important four points as we bested the Roos at Marvel. We take a look ahead to our first real interstate game of the year, heading to Adelaide for the Crows on Mothers Day. Will Max King return? We're joined by six-goal-birthday-hero, Daniel Healy, to chat through his St Kilda FC career and how he dealt with the club's transition period through the mid-90s, missing the 1997 Grand Final, and of course, that game at Subiaco. Well, it's taken a little longer but it's been one heck of a few weeks down at Moorabbin. We're finally back for Unpluggered's 2022 Season Review as we look ahead to Ross Lyon's comeback at the St Kilda Football Club in 2023.
"It's been a year-and-a-half I've wanted out, so it was good to get it done, finally.” On this episode of the Restump Podcast…. it's all about strong relationships, commitment, selflessness and self-awareness.Rory feeling as though he was on the outer is astonishing! Well not that he was on the outer, but the fact he seemingly has no idea why.Given the amount of headshaking in disbelief at Rory's comments on the way out, chiropractors are about to fill their boots!Ironically, we're going to be fair to him giving him the benefit of the doubt that he may not be the sharpest tool in the shed. But surely, anyone with an ounce of self-awareness, not self-obsessiveness, handles exit interviews with a bit more decorum. But then again, maybe the authentic honesty is something we're not used to and should appreciate? I know I am going to appreciate it when we play the Dogs in 2023. We're talking Rory, Lloyd Meek and Rosco Lyon relationships. How good is to potentially have the great Ross Lyon back in the system? Possibly returning to his home at the Saints, it shows us important relationships can be rebuilt. With Rory Lobb concerned for his mental state, Brett “Jojo” McDonnell decided to activate the Restump's cereal pack psychology licence and provide a counselling service for those struggling in their own personal relationships. We find a few answers for those listeners that have reached out. I have a feeling this Rory Lobb oriented podcast was purely an excuse so Jojo could wheel out Rory's comments read out in the Donkey voice, but he tells me it's an important topic we're covering. So, if even just to pass some off-season time, flick the fix switch and indulge in our purple nonsensical noise. Support the show

Nick Hind is an exciting speedster from the Essendon Football Club. After injury impacted his ability to be selected in his draft year, Nick continued his plumbing apprenticeship whilst pursuing his AFL dream through stints with country football teams and later the Essendon VFL side. Nick was selected by St Kilda in the 2018 draft as a mature aged recruit before being traded to Essendon in 2020 where he has continued to impress with his blistering speed and all round tenacity.
He's not the biggest name we've ever had on this show, but he is responsible for one of the most unforgettable moments in St Kilda Football Club history. We're joined by Troy Schwarze to talk about his 71-game St Kilda FC career, highlighted by, of course, that goal. The Saints took it right up to the Eagles in Perth but just fell short. This week we have Nick Stone on the show! Nick Stone is a former AFL player with Hawthorn, Collingwood and St Kilda Football Club. He played 20 games across 5 years in the AFL and has some incredible stories. When footy finished, Nick moved over to New York in 2010 to work in investment banking and through working in the US Nick discovered a gap in the coffee and cafe industry - there was nothing that compared to an Australian coffee in the US. With no real experience in hospitality, he opened his first cafe Bluestone Lane in 2013 to remedy the need for an Aussie-style café in America, growing the concept to over 50 stores by the end of 2019.The story is bloody unbelievable! He is a seriously switched on unit, I took so much out of this chat especially if you're looking at starting your own business!Hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Cant thank Nick enough for his time and when you're next over in the states make sure you check out one his cafes.Nick StoneInstagram - instagram.com/bluestonelane/Website - https://bluestonelane.com/Patreon - Dyl & Best FriendsPS. It wasn't convincing by any means, but the St Kilda Football Club walked away with the four points. Doing the bare minimum to win is not enough in this league and we look at where the club is at and why they are underperforming. Are we just not very good? Tony Brown was delisted by the Saints after 108 games in six years - including a Grand Final - at just 23 years of age. To some of the bigger clubs, just "making the Finals" might not seem like a huge achievement, but to the St Kilda Football Club, it was a goal not achieved in nearly a decade. And to win that first AFL Finals appearance in ten years? The sweet taste of victory still lingers. But still, the Saints have work to do over the off-season into AFL 2021. Unpluggered is back to wrap up the 2020 St Kilda Football Club Season, and look ahead to player movement, and next season, with a little help from the Saints' very own senior assistant coach, Aaron Hamill. A finals win! Unbelievable scenes on Saturday evening as the St Kilda Football Club recorded their first AFL Finals victory since 2010, defeating the Western Bulldogs by 3-points in a cliffhanger at the GABBA. While it was a nervy few minutes, the Saints held on for a famous victory. A Semi Final awaits against Richmond as the 2020 AFL Season continues for at least one more week... In an eerily similar story to the 2020 Saints, a former Carlton premiership player took over the coaching reigns at Moorabbin in 1990, the following year leading St Kilda FC to their first finals campaign in 18 years. Ken Sheldon joins us on Unpluggered to chat about his time at the Saints as both a player and coach, and what it meant to take the football club on that memorable AFL Finals journey. There's been nothing about this footy season - or this year, for that matter - that's been normal, and the St Kilda Football Club secured their place in the 2020 AFL Finals with a dominant victory over the 2019 Grand Finalist GWS Giants. With the Western Bulldogs looming in an Elimination Final, the boys are back to discuss an emotional win, the latest St Kilda FC news, and the mighty Saints' Finals chances. We're joined this week by another well known, passionate St Kilda FC fan - journalist, commentator, author, and all-round media man, Bruce Eva. Another frustrating loss for the St Kilda Football Club means the Saints are still waiting to confirm their place in AFL Finals for the first time since 2011. St Kilda FC's fate still sits firmly in their own hands, as a win this week - Round 18 against the Giants - will cement that long-awaited Finals berth. We look back at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory against the Eagles and look at our chances against the out of form GWS Giants. We're joined this week by 300+ game player (120 with St Kilda FC) Russell Greene to chat about his days at Moorabbin, the confusing way in which he ended up at Hawthorn - where he won 3 premierships, 3 All Australians, a Best & Fairest and a VFL league MVP award - and this week, the unfortunate passing of his former teammate, beloved Saint, Jeff Dunne. It was one that got away. While we didn't play well enough for long enough to deserve victory, ultimately the Saints should have left the GABBA with 4 points, but instead, left with a 2-point loss to the Brisbane Lions. Jack Steele was once again brilliant, while Seb Ross turned his hand to tagging, taking Lions star Lachie Neale out of the game. We look at the game and turn our attention to the next game, against the Melbourne Demons and their star midfielder, Christian Petracca.Continuing the theme of 80s-90s Saints on Unpluggered, former defender-flanker, David Grant, joined us this week to talk about his 191-game career at the St Kilda Football Club which included a second place in the 1989 Best & Fairest and selection in the 1991 AFL All Australian Team.Catch all our Zoom interviews on the Unpluggered YouTube page: don't forget to subscribe, rate and review Unpluggered wherever you listen or watch, and make sure to follow the lads on Twitter and stay connected with the podcast on all social media networks.Feedback? **** EXPLICIT LANGUAGE WARNING ***It was a "must win" game for the St Kilda Football Club if playing finals footy was a serious goal for AFL 2020, and they duly delivered. Despite a lack of champagne football, the Saints controlled the game from start to finish against the Bombers to walk away with another 4 points. Max King received a deserved nomination for the NAB AFL Rising Star award in Round 12 for 3 goals - and he really should have had five or six - and a dominant performance against one of the AFL's best in Michael Hurley. We take a look back at a solid victory, with eyes on the next prize: The Brisbane Lions at the GABBA.Former Saint and Hawthorn premiership swingman Russell Morris joined Unpluggered Podcast this week to talk about his 66 games at St Kilda FC, where the wonky #12 'social butterfly' won Tony Lockett's respect and quickly become a fan favourite at Moorabbin.Catch all our Zoom interviews on the Unpluggered YouTube page: don't forget to subscribe, rate and review Unpluggered wherever you listen or watch, and make sure to follow the lads on Twitter and stay connected with the podcast on all social media networks.Feedback? First loss in a month and some tired Saints came crashing back to earth after a near ten-goal loss to the Geelong Cats. The boys talk the positives and negatives of the disappointing result with an eye towards what looks to be a must-win game against the Bombers, who are coming off a draw with the Suns and a 4-day break themselves.Former Australian cricketer and current Melbourne Stars' coach, David Hussey, joined us this week to talk about his love for the St Kilda Football Club, a famous family rivalry and other cricketing Saints, and an incredible domestic and international cricket career before watching this current iteration of Brett Ratten's young St Kilda FC.Catch all our Zoom interviews on the Unpluggered YouTube page: don't forget to subscribe, rate and review Unpluggered wherever you listen or watch, and make sure to follow the lads on Twitter and stay connected with the podcast on all social media networks.Feedback? Another hoodoo broken as the St Kilda Football Club left the GABBA after their first win over the Sydney Swans since 2012. The 4 points makes it three wins on the trot and the lads are in a good mood as they look toward another strong performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Metricon Stadium on Thursday night. Former Saint (and Swan!) Jason 'Jack' Daniels joined us to talk about time (115 games across two stints) at Moorabbin with Tony 'Plugger' Lockett, his famous kicking style, becoming a Saints cult figure, and the run to the 1997 AFL Grand Final. We're also joined by Saints Pride and LGBTQI community advocate Mikey Cole to discuss his love for St Kilda FC and the importance of the AFL Pride Game and inclusivity in footy.Catch all our Zoom interviews on the Unpluggered YouTube page: don't forget to subscribe, rate and review Unpluggered wherever you listen or watch, and make sure to follow the lads on Twitter and stay connected with the podcast on all social media networks.Feedback? It was a game they just had to win, and the St Kilda Football Club duly delivered. It wasn't pretty but it was incredibly important, with the Adelaide Oval monkey off their back, and all eyes on a second game in five days in Adelaide - this time against Port Power - and a crowded upcoming AFL fixture featuring four games in 16 days. The boys try their best to put a demoralising Round 6 result behind them, but the memory of losing a 36-point lead to Fremantle is ever-present. Focus turns to Round 7 against the Crows in Adelaide, with the St Kilda Football Club desperate for a chance at redemption and remain in AFL Finals contention. We're off to Queensland! With Melbourne in COVID-19 lockdown once again and the Saints heating up in sunny Noosa, the boys recap a pretty satisfying Round 5 victory over Carlton, which sees the St Kilda Football Club sitting in the AFL's Top-4 for the first time in a long time. We also hear from former St Kilda FC midfielder - 2000 Trevor Barker Medallist - Andrew Thompson, about his time at the St Kilda Football Club both as a player and director on the Club's board following his retirement in 2007. Plus, we have a special guest appearance from the co-founders of the Queensland Saints supporter group, Murray and Bev Browne, to give us some insight into club activities in the Sunshine State and what to expect as a St Kilda supporter up north as we look towards Round 6 against the Fremantle Dockers at Metricon Stadium in the "AFL Queensland Hub."Andrew Thompson: 1996 AFL Draft #62221 games (1997-2007)93 goalsChannel 7 Player of the Year - 1999Trevor Barker Medal - 2000St Kilda Football Club Life MemberThis podcast was produced in isolation via a Zoom conference call, in conjunction with our episode partner, Marbled Meats - bringing the 'classic butcher' back to the suburbs of East Bentleigh. Nic Negrepontis joins hosts Jedd Zetzer & Harrison Hymans to dissect Carlton's Round 5 loss to St Kilda at Marvel Stadium.
It's always wonderful to depart the weekend with a big fat W on the board, and even more so when it's a convincing victory over the reigning AFL Premiers. Following the dismantling of Richmond in Maddie's Match, the St Kilda Football Club next face Carlton at Marvel Stadium on THURSDAY NIGHT following a late fixture change due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions. Listen as the boys recap the win over the Tigers and look forward to (hopefully) beating the Blues in primetime.Due to some technical issues - as you'll notice with our audio this week - and some last minute guest rescheduling, we have two 'celebrity fan' guests this week, in former Victorian and Australian cricket wicketkeeper - and St Kilda U19 representative - Darren Berry, and the host of the first ever standalone AFL TV program internationally, Ollie Geale. Both our guests share stories of their Saints fandom, and what it's like following our club when living, travelling and working overseas. This podcast was produced in isolation via a Zoom conference call, in conjunction with our episode partner, Marbled Meats - bringing the 'classic butcher' back to the suburbs of East Bentleigh. AFL Round 3, 2020 was a sobering experience for the St Kilda Football Club as they were comprehensively outplayed by a rampaging Magpie outfit. AFL 2020 Round 2 is finally in the books - 84 days after the conclusion of Round 1 - and the Saints are now on the board with a win! The 2019 season is now officially in the books, with the NAB AFL Draft, Rookie Draft and Pre-Season Draft complete. Chris Toce, the club's State Recruitment Manager (VIC & Allies), joined Darren, Nick and Aaron in the studio to discuss what the process of youth recruitment looks like in the AFL, leading all the way up to final decisions on AFL Draft night. Another fantastic look under the bonnet, into the inner-sanctum of the St Kilda Football Club after Pro Scout Steve Lennie joined us on the last episode.Chris talks through the three new young lads, Ryan Byrnes, Leo Connolly and Jack Bell, as well as guys like Jack Bytel, Max King and Callum Wilkie with detail you won't find anywhere else.Following the draft chat, Jamie Cox, former elite first-class cricketer and current GM of Football Performance at the St Kilda Football Club, also jumped on the phone to discuss developments in the football program and the official entrance of St Kilda's team in the AFLW for 2020, the importance of Peta Searle, and some fantastic news about the state of the footy club's membership drive.Last - but certainly not least - St Kilda Royalty! Few players in VFL/AFL history have been as polarising as Stephen Milne, but, if you bleed RW&B, chances are you probably love a man who played 275 games and kicked 574 goals for the club. One of the greatest small forwards in football history, the man known as Milney is a two-time All Australian, four-time St Kilda FC leading goalkicker and the player opposition fans loved to hate. This week, Milney is our special guest on Unpluggered, talking everything from lockerroom pranks to the newly-unemployed Ross Lyon, to the bounce of the ball that went agonisingly close to delivering a second Premiership to Moorabbin.Interestingly we may have just opened a friendly war with last week's guest, Adam Schneider.Yes, the boys are back in the studio this week to wrap up a disappointing loss to the Blues. Back on the winners list! Four-time Trevor Barker Medallist (and "abit fat") Jack Steven returned to play a starring role in the Saints Round 21 clash against the Fremantle Dockers, a fixture which has turned into abit of a mini-rivalry between the two teams. Criminal convictions, Binge drinking, violent outbursts and marriage breakdown in 2008 saw former AFL player Heath Black hit rock bottom. It wasn't until 2011 that he was finally diagnosed with Bipolar and Adult ADHD. Man... This episode really lifts the hair up on your neck! Heath is a 192 game AFL player for Fremantle and St Kilda Fc is now a Mental Health Advocate who has seen some dark times during his life, but now is a shinning beacon of light helping thousands of people across Australia overcome mental health issues. This episode I was blown away by this guy and what he is achieving now. My hope for this episode is that it reaches those in most need for the life saving info thats within this recording. With those people in mind please do your part and pass this episode on. Forever grateful
