In Tune to Nature Podcast
Save the National Parks' Staff from Firings! Retired Forester Kristine Johnson Talks about Effects on Great Smoky Mountains National Park

In Tune to Nature Podcast

Our National Park Service staff are under seige, as so many federal employees are, from trump and Elon Musk's unfair attacks on our federal government agencies with haphazard and frankly cruel mass firings of public servants (not truly based on inefficiency or poor performance) along with spending and hiring freezes that are traumatizing and debilitating park employees and surrounding communities, creating a culture of fear and demoralization (the rhetoric not only lacks appreciation but is insulting). What little we gain in $ savings are outweighed by the massive long-term costs for everyone. I turned to a career public servant with over 40 years in the National Park Service -- retired Supervisory Forester Kristine Johnson from Great Smoky Mountains National Park, still living and volunteering in Gatlinburg, TN-- to have her on the "In Tune to Nature" show to help us understand what is going on and how these firings and spending freezes are really affecting park employees and morale on the ground (kids and the broader Gatlinburg community included). In our 47-minute conversation, Kristine also shares the potential long-term harmful impacts on wild animal residents and park habitats, concerns about the government privatizing park jobs and prioritizing recreation over wildlife and scientific research, public and wild animal safety issues, and what we as citizens can do now to help support our parks in this crisis. Prior to the trump regime, our national parks were already overloaded with tourists who love them, while being chronically understaffed and underfunded. The parks can't afford to lose any more dedicated staff, so American citizens need to step up to defend them if we truly care. Do we have the power to get these hardworking and talented folks re-hired if we tell our U.S. Senators and Representative that's what we demand?! Let's find out. In this episode, Courtney talks with Chris “Roll Tide” Marshburn, a newly minted Ridge Runner for the ATC in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They talk about how Chris came to crave a change from litigation to outdoor adventures, what the hut caretaking system is like in the White Mountains and he answers the question: “What is it like to work on trail?”   About Chris: Chris was born in Raleigh, North Carolina and grew up in Central Florida. He is a graduate of Davidson College and the Vanderbilt University School of Law. Chris enjoyed a long and successful legal career in Memphis, Tennessee, first as an assistant district attorney and then doing personal injury defense litigation as staff counsel for two insurance companies. Chris has a son and daughter both in Memphis of which he is very proud as well as a new granddaughter. Though busy with work and family Chris has been an avid hiker and backpacker most of his life, and he has been fortunate to enjoy many of the great outdoors spaces in this country, including long sections of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia, New England and the Great Smoky Mountains. Recently Chris made the decision to take a break from the practice of law and pursue opportunities in outdoor stewardship, a long-held passion. In 2022 Chris served as a backcountry caretaker for the Appalachian Mountain Company in the White National Forest, and was responsible for one of the busiest campsites along the Appalachian Trail. Chris has earned certifications in wilderness first aid and as a Leave No Trace Trainer, and recently became a member of the Smoky Mountain Hiking Club. Chris is thrilled to be serving as the long season Ridgerunner in GSMNP. Episode No. 567 features artist Rose B. Simpson and author Brent Martin. The Institute for Contemporary Art, Boston is showing "Rose B. Simpson: Legacies," an exhibition of 14 sculptures Simpson has made over the last eight years. It was curated by Jeffrey De Blois and is on view through January 29, 2023. Rose B. Simpson is included in two other New England presentations: her Counterculture is installed at Field Farm, a Trustees property in Williamstown, Mass.; and in "Ceramics in the Expanded Field," at MASS MoCA. Counterculture was organized by Jamilee Lacy and will be on view through April 30, 2023. "Ceramics," which is up until early March 2023, was curated by Susan Cross. This fall The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia will feature "Rose B. Simpson: Dream House." The exhibition opens October 7. Across ceramic sculpture, performance, installation, and more, Simpson's work addresses ideas as far ranging as resistance, apocalypse, spirituality, and automobile design. Museums such as the University of New Mexico Art Museum (Simpson lives in Santa Clara Pueblo), Nevada Museum of Art, the Savannah College of Art and Design's SCAD Museum of Art, and the Pomona College Museum of Art have all presented solo exhibitions of her work, and Simpson has been in group shows at the Henry Art Gallery, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Denver Museum of Art, and plenty more. Martin discusses his new book "George Masa's Wild Vision," which was recently published by Hub City Press. Masa was an Asheville, North Carolina-based photographer who had a significant impact on the establishment of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and on determining the Southern route of the Appalachian Trail, the two crown jewels of the eastern United States' natural infrastructure. Amazon and Indiebound offer the book for around $25.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an incredibly beautiful section of the Appalachian Mountain range. The park straddles the borders of Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. The park is over 520,000 acres of largely old growth forest that is dissected by the Appalachian Trail which runs from Northern Georgia to Maine. Although the park is loaded with miraculously beautiful sights literally at every turn, it is a deceivingly rugged land. It is not a place to be underestimated or to explore without the proper preparations. Since its inception the park has attracted all forms of visitors, from the common family outing to the more daring adventure seekers. The park has something for everyone. However, there have been a number of unexplained incidents that have taken place in the park through the years. Some of these have potential explanations while others are completely bizarre and have a more sinister feel. All of these incidents are still open and looking for a resolution or at the minimum...and explanation. Is there something or someone in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that is responsible for these incidents or are they merely a series of unfortunate events?   Send us feedback or sightings/experiences at one of the following. We would absolutely love to hear from you, so don't hold back! [spp-player]   Complete shownotes for Episode 86 of the Roadtreking RV Lifestytle Podcast: JENNIFER'S TIP OF THE WEEK  Where to get a great National Park Guide… http://nationalparkstraveler.com This is a 36-page book that will help you find your place in the National Park System this year. With the Essential Park Guide, you can find that place. The tip of the week is brought to you by Good Sam, the world's most popular RV organization, now celebrating its 50th year. LISTENER QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK: Listener Dave asks for recommendations on where to park his Class A RV while visiting America's Largest RV Show in Hershey, PA Sept. 14-18 Mike suggests a link to area campgrounds in and around Hershey, but recommends the Hersheypark Camping Resort, right near the show grounds, which runs free shuttle service. Listener John asks if there is any news about the lottery we held for the camping spots for the Roadtreking gathering we call the Tobermory Expedition, Sept. 5-9 at Tobermory in northern Ontario, Canada. The event is sold out and the lottery was held. We showed a video of it on our Roadtreking Facebook Group. That group is THE single best place to go when you have RV questions, need help or just want to be kept informed on events, news and items of interest to the Roadtreking RV audience, no matter what kind of RV you have. Tobermory is at the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula between Georgian Bay and the main basin of Lake Huron. It is known for its crystal clear waters and spectacular wilderness scenery. You can watch the video for the lottery to award spots on the Facebook Group. Just a note that our other Roadtreking gatherings for this year – to the Smoky Mountains in June and the Fall Foliage one in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in October are also sold out with long waiting lists. All this is to underscore the importance of being a part of our Facebook Group. The next event that is not yet sold out will be January 20-22, 2017 and is our annual winter campout at Tahquamenon Falls. We'll start taking signups for it on the blog and announce via the Roadtreking Facebook Group sometime in the early fall. Speaking of the Smokies, reader Jane DeWolf sent a nice note: My husband, Dennis, and I are looking forward to the Roadtrek  trip to the Smokies in June.  We actually live near the Smokies and do volunteer work in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This weekend when we were listening to your podcast,  you mentioned that you were going to bring Bo with you on this trip.  Naturally we are very anxious to meet you, your wife, Jennifer, and of course, Bo.  However, we thought we should warn you that there are only 2 trails in the GSMNP which allow dogs on them.  Both are near the park entrances.  The one on the Tennessee  side of the park is the Sugarland's trail near the Sugarland's Visitors Center.  The one near Cherokee in the NC side is the River trail near the Oconuluftee Visitor Center.  Dogs are allowed in the park campgrounds and on the roads. We just thought we would give you a heads up in case you were not aware of the GSMNP regulations. Gary Hennes' system By email, a listener asks: “I am trying to find the best way to carry a canoe on a roadtrek. I have a 2003 Popular 200. Any ideas?” Mike notes that he found a webpage at Trails.com that offered some ideas. Roadtrek RVs have raised roofs that can make carrying a canoe seem difficult. However, the vehicles are compatible with several roof racks and canoes can also be mounted to the rear of the RV. Roof racks are the most stable and the safest carrying option. The canoe you choose should be measured first to ensure it fits your vehicle ...
