You know that turning point in your life when everything changed? We’ve all got them. And no matter what rules you try to write for your life (“that could never happen to meâ€ÂÂ), sometimes you find yourself at another crossroads … one you never saw yourself at. In 2015, Ashlyn Carter was diagnosed with and partially hospitalized for an eating disorder, generalized anxiety, and depression. Soon after recovery, she realized that something had to change, and she left behind her fast-paced career in big city PR to start her own business. Calligraphy turned into copywriting and before she knew it she was working with creative industry leaders like Jenna Kutcher, Hilary Rushford, and Heather Crabtree. We talk about … Dealing with anxiety and depression Being addicted to work + putting work before yourself and other important relationships Not having a language for mental illness The fears of niching down in your business How your physical and mental health directly affects your business’ bottom line Making rest a priority and taking a sabbatical as an entrepreneur And more...!
Friends and fellow mamapreneurs, if you've ever wanted to see a living and breathing example of stunning dignity and grace in the most difficult of circumstances, you've found it in today's guest. Heather Crabtree is a mama, a wife, a friend, a daughter, and yes- a rockstar entrepreneur. But 8 months ago she found out the devastating news that her 9 year old daughter had Stage 4 cancer, and ever since that moment, she has been on a journey to remain grateful, hopeful, and immensely clear about what it is that matters most of all in her life. (Hint: It isn't the 6 figure months and a growing business.) Her message isn't just for people in time of crisis, though, it is for YOU and me, sisters, right in this very moment. It is a call and an invitation to get really clear and intentional with how you spend your precious time, and the things and people that you give your energy to. It's not every day we get to see such courage and an example of grace-filled dignity, and I am beyond honored to share this beautiful conversation with you. Sit down in your favorite space, grab some tissues + tea, get comfy and open your hearts for this one. Today, my sweet friend Heather is going to remind us about what really matters. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Why it's okay to change your mind and change your course How to know if you're making decisions in your life in business based off of fear Why it's important to put family first How to move through the fear about “what's next” when it comes to our families and children How we can be of greater service to families who have sick children IN THIS EPISODE I ASK: What are some of the challenges and greatest takeaways you've learned in the process of the evolution of your career? What was the moment that made you finally understand that you have to do what's right for you? What are the top 2-3 lessons that you've learned by going through this experience with your family? What do you want people to know about families that are going through this, and how can we be of greater service? What is the greatest lesson that your little girl has taught you? SOUL SHIFTING QUOTES: “I don't need to prove myself to anyone. I'm here, and my family comes first.” “With any big tragic thing that happens, you go through these stages. So this past year has been about recognizing those and just really digging into what matters.” “We make these moments count, because we don't know what's next.” “I don't have a problem with money. What I have a problem with is thinking that that's what's going to bring you happiness.” “Your business should fit into your life, and we try so hard as entrepreneurs to fit our life into our business.” “I think the more you can share and open up, the more that you inspire people and allow them to feel like they're not alone. “ “Every moment counts. Give the most you can to the people that you love.”
Today on the podcast we have our friend, our mentor, the lovely Mamma Heather Crabtree from the Savvy Community. If you are not familiar with this woman, what business rock have you been hiding under? Her Facebook community and her community in general that she has built over the last few years is phenomenal and literally the online space where we first met. Sparkles and all the confetti for that! We talk a bit about this legendary Savvy Community where we met online, and how it’s transitioned over the years. In this episode Heather shares with us how she has grown just a couple 100 members to over 13,000 and how that evolved into her bringing on a membership community where she hosts female entrepreneurs from all over the world and helps train and coach them. We also go into the programs that she has brought along with her and even how she has been able to walk with her daughter as she has gone through stage four cancer, what it’s like balancing a business and a chronic illness like cancer, and how that has affected her as a person and really made her stronger for the better. Like most entrepreneurs, it’s been a journey for Heather of both ups and downs. But the past year has been one of the hardest years yet. About a year ago, her 10-year-old daughter, London, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. And amidst caring for her daughter, fighting cancer, grieving, and moving forward, she’s continued to be a bright light for female entrepreneurs. This week I'm excited to share two fabulous conversations with Ashlyn Carter, conversion copywriter for creative entrepreneurs! Soon after meeting Ashlyn, I learned she's played a major part in some huge launches around the internet, including some names you might have heard before such as Jenna Kutcher, Heather Crabtree and Hilary Rushford. While Ashlyn now runs a thriving business, it wasn't always this way. In today's Courage story, she bravely shares how she went from sleeping with her phone under pillow as an ever-striving Public Relations professional to recognizing her mental health had been shuffled to the backburner in a major way. Ashlyn was hospitalized for a full blown eating disorder and generalized anxiety, and after dealing with frustration and feeling lost, she knew a change was on the horizon. In today's Courage story, you'll learn: Ashlyn's rocky road to entrepreneurship, including why she had to hit "pause" on her life while she was hospitalized for two months How she challenged her career mindset and decided to forge a completely new path after a successful, striving-based PR career How she got started as a copywriterThe BIG thing she did to accelerate her business and become the "go to girl" for launch copywriting in her industry in just one month SHOW NOTES:Ashlyn's websiteJenna Kutcher Fizzle - grab 5 weeks for free!

Heather Crabtree believes that you should run your business and it should not run you, and that is why she is a business strategist for creative entrepreneurs. However, she did not begin her career journey as a business strategist, instead she started as a lawyer, what she had always thought she was meant to be. After her father passed away, her life turned upside down and she was unhappy working at a law firm. With the support of her partner, she stopped practicing and went into the wedding planning business. In 2014, she sold her business to a team member and decided she would create a community of like-minded women and business owners with the Savvy Business Circle. Heather’s Strategies -How she created a community of women and business owners -Why her journey began as an attorney and then a wedding planner -How free webinars helped her business grow -The good and bad of managing a large group -Relatable habits she is working on -Which past podcast interviewee is her sister -Her upcoming conference in September 2016 Sharp Quotes: “My title being this business strategist, you would think that I had this game plan behind it, but I didn’t.” “I am a continual learner, so I would just watch people, and pick apart what they were doing, and was like ‘okay how can I use this for my business?’ I was continually doing that and that’s how I built the community.” “I wanted there to be a place where it wasn’t catty, and saying, ‘look at her success’ and bringing her down. I really wanted it to be a positive uplifting place.” “You don’t want it to be all about money, but at the end of the day,you are a business owner, and you are here to make a profit too.” “The challenge over the past few months has been: how does this fit within the bigger vision, and how do I still make it work for me and also the community..” “I am a big dreamer, and I am also a big action taker. So, if I say I am going to do something, I am going to do it, and I am going to do it really well.” “My whole thing is sharing your smarts and your heart because I think your heart has to be put in place in your business.” [Connect with Heather: Twitter (@HeatherCrabtree), Instagram (@heather_crabtree) Pinterest (Heather Crabtree), Website:Heather Crabtree] RESOURCES: 2016 Savvy Business Owners’ Conference Savvy Business Owners on Facebook Heidi Bartlett - SDIHW020
Our Friday Coffee Talk episodes are a time for Danielle and I chat about anything and everything. We are so happy this community enjoys hearing us talk about things that often get discussed at a coffee shop, the things you tell your girlfriends. Today we are sipping coffee and talking all about working from home. The good, the bad and the ugly. Ok, maybe there isn't really any ugly. But both Danielle and I share when we started working for home, how try and keep work and life separate. Spoiler alert, we aren't very good at it but we make a conscious effort to step away from work and we both share how to try to do that. We also go into detail about emails and Danielle shares how she gave herself permission to take the weekends off. It's a great episode. Even if you don't work from home you'll get a bit of sneak peek into how Danielle and I plan our days and what working from home is like. Also a major spoiler alert, we do not have kids so we have to give a major shout out to the WAHMs and the SAHMs because you both are our heroes! p.s. Heather Crabtree is a business strategist with a passion for coaching creative entrepreneurs. Heather has embraced her journey. Her journey lead her from the career she envisioned herself having since high school, an attorney, to owning a very large and successful wedding planning company, selling it and finally landing exactly where she wants to be, helping coach creative entrepreneurial women. Heather talks in detail about how her definition of success shifted the moment she got a heart wrenching call saying her father had passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack. "When tragedies like that happen it changes everything. It changed my whole being." In today's episode we chat with Heather about embracing her journey, dealing with the loss of her father, how she lost herself and a good long chat with her sister gave her her perspective back. We chat about this idea of needing to validate one's career with their title. Heather left the world of lawyer-ing but felt she wasn't worthy because she walked away from the career she went to school for. She shares with us how she had to find her confidence to not care what others thought. "be passionate about it, be driven, and be really good at." We chat about what success means now, and how her first definition was shaped early on by her father. "His version of success was either you were going to be a doctor or a lawyer." Heather's go-to business books: E-Myth and Start with Why. Heather mentions Amber Housley's Conference, Inspired 2015. Heather is offering out listeners the opportunity to signup for her course, Streamline with Systems as a founding member and earlybird rate. Learn more here.
