Hey friends! Welcome to Girls' Night! Friends, I'm so excited because today we're back with another episode in our How She Does it Series where I'm sharing profiles of women we look up to.  Today's guest is someone I've looked up to for a long time and that's my new friend, Katelyn James. Katelyn is a photography educator based in Richmond, Virginia, with 30,000 students around the globe and co-owns an entrepreneurial-based micro-school for kids in their community called Acton Academy Westend. Her passion lies in teaching the power of personal branding and empowering others through her education. In today's episode, she's sharing about her journey of becoming a business owner and a mom and the doors that have opened as a result of her hard work, grit, and determination. One of the first questions I ask her is what is the accomplishment she's most proud of and I think her answer is going to surprise you — I know it did for me, but in the very best way!  This is one of the most inspiring conversations I've had here on Girls Night, so let's dive right in!  Learn more about your ad choices. Another favorite in the Best of 2023 Guest Interviews!    Katelyn James is a marketing mastermind, a wife, a mom of 5, a gifted photographer and creative and the face of a 7-figure education business. She's also one of the kindest and most humble human beings you will meet, and I'm thrilled to share my conversation with Katelyn on today's episode of BEYOND: The Podcast for Moms Called to Business.    We cover so much on this episode – it's my longest episode to date – but filled with so much goodness. We talk about Katelyn's humble beginnings as a college student with a small business to becoming a millionaire who has stewarded her gifts to grow and support her extended family doing work she loves. We talk about marriage, motherhood, business, grief and loss, personal and spiritual growth and her belief that EVERYONE "should have a coach". She believes it so fully that her business invests in personal coaching for her entire team.   On this episode of BEYOND, you'll learn:   • What Katelyn learned about hustle in the early years of her business and how it quickly grew to a 7-figures • How investing in her own coaching saved her most important relationships • The cost of her business consuming her life for the first 5 years of marriage, and what she does differently now • The lie that keeps most entrepreneurs from investing in their own growth and support • Her loss of baby James in 2018 and what it taught her about the role of pain and discomfort in our healing and growth • What a typical week looks like for Katelyn and her husband Michael in this season of life and business • What's next for her personal brand, KJ Education and the pivot she feels coming soon   Important links for this episode: • www.katelynjames.com  • Instagram: @katelynjames • Personal Instagram: @alsopfamilyadventures • The school: Acton Academy West End   I hope you found today's interview both encouraging and inspiring as you navigate motherhood and business as a creative entrepreneur, educator or coach. Apple Podcasts | Spotify | TranscriptMore Resources: Free Class | Episode 90Here we are at the end of the year already and one of the things I like to do is take a look back at 2022. What are our wins, our challenges and how did the year overall look!? This was a transitional year and that often poses challenges, but I know I'm a better person because of it too. I do have a free class for you all about mini sessions. Whether you've tried running minis, failed or just want to grow this class is for you! You'll learn how to structure and market your minis well. It's definitely a class favorite so check that out! Ok, a look back at 2022... this was a fast yet slow year. We accomplished so much and I wanted to open this up so you can see into what family and business looks like for me.New for the BusinessI was able to hire on two new members. One on the education side and one on the Wisp and Willow side of things. I knew I would hire but didn't realize we would need two! I was also part of mastermind after saying I wouldn't be. Last year I was in a mastermind and it was incredible so I thought I would use all of this year to just implement everything I had learned. Well, I was wrong! An opportunity to be in Katelyn James' mastermind presented itself and I just couldn't pass it up. I am so glad I didn't because it was a great way to invest in myself and my business. I highly encourage you check that out and let it add amazing value to what you do! Another new thing for the business front was getting much stricter on my work hours. It was a goal to set rhythms, routines, and boundaries. I enjoy working so placing some work hours and sticking to them have helped me be the best version of myself in all aspects of life.New for the FamilyThis one arrived at the end of the year. But I am so glad it has; we've found a good family rhythm! After ten months I can confidently say we've cracked our family code and know what works. We started my daughter in Acton Academy. It's a non traditional micro school, that is big on training up independence and giving kids the freedom to learn at their own pace. They truly foster a love for learning and it's blessed my family so much! There are Acton schools all over so if this peaks your interest I highly suggest looking into it. The one we're a part of is under a home school umbrella, so three days a week are in school and the other two days we homeschool. We also found a preschool for my son in October that coordinated with my daughter's school! This was a really big deal and there's more to it in the podcast so give it a listen!Travel HappenedAs I take a look back at 2022 I realized we traveled A LOT. Travel with my husband, for work and for family. I grew up traveling and seriously enjoy it. My husband and I sat down and looked at our calendar to decide when we wanted to travel, how much and what were the best times to do it. This was definitely our most successful year when it comes coordinating that. We might have traveled more than Daniel, my husband, wanted to but we planned it all together. That makes a HUGE difference. Doing this opened up the potential for an incredible year in 2023. I encourage you to bring your family into this process, give them ownership and say and you'll enjoy the planning together!Scheduled Slow Days

When our story takes a tragic turn, it often feels like God is a million miles away. When she pictured the life God had for her, this was nothing like what she had imagined. But rather than guard her heart, God was asking her to lean in and trust that His plan was good. Priority Pursuit

017. Friend, can I tell you something that you likely don't want to hear? The quality of the client experience that you offer matters far more than the quality of your products or services.  I don't know about you, but as a photographer, I love what I do, and I take a lot of pride in my work. I want my images to speak for themselves, and I want people to book with me because they love my photos.  But, here's the thing. The average person doesn't know what makes a great photo. The average person doesn't look at a photo and think, “Whoa. I bet that harsh light was hard to shoot in. Victoria killed it!” Or, “I so appreciate how Victoria used lead lines and framed the couple in these images. She has to be our wedding photographer!”  Now, I'm not saying that you shouldn't master your craft or offer anything less than great work, but with this in mind, there comes a point where the key to being able to successfully sell your products or services at a luxury or just a higher price point that allows you to make ends meet is the client experience you offer.  With this in mind, the next few solo episodes of Priority Pursuit are going to focus on strategic ways you can elevate your client experience. We'll be talking about ways you can surprise your clients, how to create the perfect welcome box, and more. And, today, we're going to start by simply thinking about and mapping out what you'd like your client experience to look like touchpoint by touchpoint with your ideal customer in mind.  - Step 1: Know that the basis of a great customer experience is to under promise & over deliver.  - Step 2: Determine what's most important to your ideal customer in regards to your products or services.  - Step 3: Map out what you'd like every step & touch point of your customer experience to look like.  You can find a more detailed version of this episode's show notes at: https://victoriarayburnphotography.com/how-create-client-experience-allows-book-more-clients-raise-prices  Mentioned Links & Resources Show Notes: https://victoriarayburnphotography.com/how-create-client-experience-allows-book-more-clients-raise-prices    “Episode 014: 4 Easy Ways You Can Under Promise & Over Deliver to Your Customers” - https://victoriarayburnphotography.com/four-ways-you-can-under-promise-over-deliver-to-your-clients/  The Power of Moments by Chip Heath and Dan Heath - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1501147765/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1501147765&linkCode=as2&tag=rayburnvict05-20&linkId=e808b659abf487b835727c134bd11ca1  Katelyn James' Bridal Guide - https://katelynjames.com/kj-bridal-guide  Katelyn James Courses - https://katelynjames.com/store  How to Create a Customer Avatar with DigitalMarketer - https://www.digitalmarketer.com/blog/create-customer-avatar-youtube/ Pixellu Smartslides - https://www.pixellu.com/smartslides/  Episode 011: How to Build Your Team as a Creative Entrepreneur with Jessie Roseberry of Roseberry & Co. - https://victoriarayburnphotography.com/build-your-team-as-a-creative-entrepreneur-jessie-roseberry/  Join the Priority Pursuit Podcast Facebook Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/179106264013426    Receive 50% Off Your First Order with Photographer's Edit - http://victoriarayburnphotography.com/pe/  Save 50% on Your First Six Months of Quickbooks Self-Employed - http://victoriarayburnphotography.com/quickbooks/  Receive $20 Off Your First Pair of Rothy's - http://victoriarayburnphotography.com/rothys

Over the next couple of weeks, I'm replaying some favorite episodes that you may have missed.   Do you follow someone on social media and feel a little like a creep because you love them and you feel like you’re friends, but they have no idea who you are? That’s Katelyn James for me, and she’s been a dream guest since before this show even started.   Katelyn James is a professional wedding photographer and entrepreneur  She’s been featured and recognized in national publications such as Professional Photographers Magazine, The Knot, Southern Living Weddings, and Southern Weddings. She teaches and coaches photographers from all over the country and internationally, and in 2015 she was named one of the “Top Ten Educators to Watch” by Rangefinder Magazine, not to mention she’s a nationally known speaker and just seems like everyone’s best friend.   Katelyn has been married to her husband Michael for almost 10 years, and they are parents to Everly (Evy), Graham, and baby James in Heaven.   I’ve been following Katelyn for a long time because I love the real life perspective of everything she has going on (as seen on Instagram). Her images are beautiful, and if you spend even just one day on her Instagram feed, you’re sure to fall in love with her family.   But back in 2018 Katelyn and Michael went through a tragic story of loss with their middle child, James. At 20 weeks they were given devastating news, and my talk with Katelyn is about the days, weeks and months following that news, their journey, and their loss.   When I describe this podcast, I use the words, finding strength in imperfection and beauty in the mess, and joy in fear and pain. Katelyn is the most beautiful illustration of all of these things. I cried when I watched them go through it online, I cried during the interview, I cried when I edited it. You can even hear me crying in the background of her talking.    This is a rich story about loss, joy, peace, community, and how James’ legacy has lived on and helped so many.   Katelyn shares the most intimate parts of her journey of loss on Instagram, and she goes into even more depth in a series of blog posts that I’ll have for you in the show notes at supermompodcast.com.    While this episode could possibly be a trigger for those who have gone through the loss of a child, Katelyn brings a joy and hope that I hope you can feel.

Listen in to an honest conversation about pregnancy after loss with my dear friend Katelyn James Alsop. We talk very candidly about what it’s like to be pregnant again after losing a baby. There are moments of tears and of laughter in this episode, but isn’t that the reality of this grief journey; a dance of joy and sorrow. We talk about how Katelyn made the decision to try again for another baby after her son James died from complications from Down Syndrome. We talk about when or if there ever is the right time to announce another pregnancy, what it’s like to keep our baby’s memories alive when a new baby is born and I love when Katelyn talks to me about battling the fear that plagues so many of us in our pregnancies after loss. We even talk about parenting after loss and parenting while pregnant after loss; what it looks like to invite our living children into our grief and our fear. And in doing so, hopefully teach them about what it looks like to trust God even when it’s scary and even when the worst happens and also show them what finding healing can look like. I am so grateful for Katelyn and her story and her honesty in this episode. I pray that it reminds you that you are not alone. And that there is joy to be had, even in the scary, fearful places like pregnancy after loss.    JOIN THE COMMUNITY If you have experienced the loss of a baby I want to extend an invitation to The Joyful Mourning Community. Today I welcome back Katelyn James to the Brands that Book podcast to talk about a subject that I've largely avoided: the quarantine. For those of you who have listened to the podcast the last couple weeks, you know that I've tried my best not even to mention the Coronavirus. I've really tried to focus on business during this season. I just feel like there's so much noise out there about what's going on in the world and personally I've been trying to cut out as much of that noise as possible lately. But the reality of the situation is that it is a tough season. There's a lot of uncertainty in the future. I know in conversations that I've been having with Krista, that one of the hardest parts for us is just been not knowing what the end date could be and what life might look like in a couple months. So, I think there is an important conversation that can be had in this season around dealing with uncertainty and what it looks like to live well in this season. I'm excited about this conversation because I think what Katelyn has to share is life giving, as so many conversations with her and her husband Michael are. What I appreciate about Katelyn is that she doesn't try to minimize the severity of the situation. She's not just saying, “Oh, just look on the bright side,” but rather she recognizes the tough situation and opens herself up to the possibility that something good could come from it, even when things are really tough. Hopefully you find this conversation as refreshing as I did. And we do wrap up the conversation by chatting about what businesses can be sharing about and doing in this season, and some of the ways that others in the industry are innovating. Life's not always fun - in fact, it sometimes it feels painful. You might know it well. Katelyn James, photographer, mom and wife, shares her moment(s) of pain in today's episode and how losing a child and standing in the tension of grief and goodness showed her God's goodness. In a culture that emphasizes comfort, we often hop over pain when there are golden nuggets hidden inside of dark seasons that sometimes we can only find there. Katelyn encourages us with this: "if you allow yourself to lean into the uncomfortable, to let yourself feel pain and let God do work from the foundational place of where the problem started - that's how you feel." Your website is your online store, its where people can learn more about you, see your vibe, check out your work, and connect for more information. I absolutely love web design; I think I was a website designer in another lifetime, if this photography thing didn't work out for me, I would have totally gone into that!   If social media is the introduction or the invitation, your website is the party! You have complete control of your user's experience, and there are so many fancy things you can do! With all the fancy bells and whistles you can have on a website, there are five must-have aspects that NEED to be on your website as a photographer, and today we are chatting all about them!  The most important page on your website is often overlooked by photographers. It is the about me page.  This is one of the most viewed pages on my website. This is where clients get to know me; my family learns about Justin's heart valve surgeries and how it changed me as a person. It sums up all the work you just did in episode 11, where we dug into creating a personal brand.  This is where you get to be creative with your words- which is something photographers can struggle with at times but is so important. Another option is to create a video! The Hollis Co has a great video that showcases their company values!    Jenna Kutcher uses a Madlib style about me page, and Marie Forleo's about me page showcases where she is now, but also know where she started!  Whatever you do, please, for the love of all things holy, do not write- I've had a camera in my hand since I can remember, and I love coffee.  The next thing that should be up on your site as a photographer is your portfolio.  My portfolio gets updated about once a year. However, in my early years, I was updating it almost after every shoot! Here is the thing about your portfolio. You don't have to show every photo you have ever taken. You don't even have to showcase every session or wedding you have photographed. Get picky when it comes to choosing images for your portfolio showcase what you want to shoot, and nothing else. If you want only to photograph weddings, then do not have family reunions sweet 16s and newborn photos in your portfolio.   One of the best things I did last year added an extra step to my client workflows before I closed their project. I got this idea from Katelyn James. I would go through their gallery in cloudspot and download any images that I thought I might want to add to my portfolio when I updated it in the fall. Then I created a collection inside cloudspot called 2019 portfolio. Then I uploaded the images I had just picked and saved them there. This does a few things. 1- it makes it wayyy easier to update my portfolio in the fall, and 2. I have all of my best work in one spot that I can pull for images on social media, or for blog posts!!  The next thing you need to have on your website is client testimonials.  I call these love notes on my site, but this is where you are going to show social proof. Think about it, would you pay $3000 for something without reading the reviews? I know I wouldn't!  So how do you get these reviews? Ask your clients! If you did your job right and provided an amazing experience and beautiful images, your clients will be more then likely to leave you a review! I now have this automated to go out in an email a little over a month after the wedding!   This way, I have testimonials coming in, and I don't even have to think about it!  I also suggest that you include your client's photo next to their testimonial. This helps to establish a little more trust!  The next thing you need on your website is a link to your blog! We talked all about blogging in episode 10. You want to make sure clients can find it! You could even have a section where you highlighted some of your help content. If you're not sure what I'm talking about when I say help content check out episode 10, where I broke down the three types of content and how to choose your blogging categories!  The final thing you want to include on your website is a contact form! I have my contact form linked to my client management software Honeybook. This form collects all the information I need from couples right away, like their names, email address, wedding date, and location, how they heard about me and asks them a fundamental question.  Tell me about your wedding, what are you looking for in your photographer? This will let me see where they are in the planning process and helps me see if they are a good fit. A bride who replies with a one-liner might not be the best fit.   I love that honeybook automatically pulls this information and alerts me when someone has inquired. This also means I can start the booking process right away, even on my phone!  These are non-negotiable things that you need to have on your website as a photographer.   WISE PHOTOGRAPEHR FB COMMUNITY //  https://www.facebook.com/groups/wisephotographerpodcast/  WISE PHOTOGRAPHER IG// https://www.instagram.com/wisephotographerpodcast/ WISE PHOTOGRAPHER WEBSITE// http://wisephotographerpodcast.com/

For the longest time I was really afraid of becoming a mom. I thought that I should have these longings to be a mother or I really should want to have a baby, but I never did. I was really happy with my marriage and my life before babies. I loved my work, and I was really fearful of what it would do to my life, my body, my sleep, a lot of different things. I remember having a conversation with my friend, Katelyn, about this and was nervous saying it out loud. She looked at me and was like, "Me, too. Me, too. That's crazy. I haven't heard anybody else say that before." We connected on that level because we felt weird or alone or like we were the exception to the rule in women.  Today I am going to interview Katelyn on the podcast. If you follow me or Katelyn, you know that both of us are mothers to three children. I have three young children. She also has three children, one of which is in heaven. The conversation that we have, our hope as we have this conversation, is that you, if you're in the same boat ... if you're afraid of becoming a mom or aren't ready and don't know if you ever will be ... is that our conversation would hopefully make you feel a little bit more normal and not alone. Today’s guest—who for many needs no introduction—is photographer Katelyn James. Katelyn started her photography business during her junior year of college and since then has shot hundreds of weddings alongside her husband Michael, and been featured in national publications such as The Knot, Southern Weddings, BRIDES and others. Beyond that, Katelyn has influenced the wedding photography industry in so many different ways—especially when it comes to marketing one’s business. So it makes sense that thousands of photographers have enrolled in her online courses and her newest membership program: KJ All-Access, where one gets behind-the-scenes access to real weddings, engagements, and portrait shoots. During this interview, I wanted to discuss how Katelyn would market a business if she was starting one today. We reflect on how she built her business, why she started blogging both her professional work and stuff from her personal life, the importance of networking, mistakes she sees business make today, and her approach to marketing. The highlights: 03:30 The first time I met Katelyn 09:01 How Katelyn started her business 13:56 What drove inquiries early in her business. 19:53 How Katelyn decides what to share of her personal life. 24:19 Where she would start if she was building a business today. 30:55 The value of blogging today. 32:10 The most effective way to approach networking. 33:52 The power of building relationships within your industry. 38:56 Where Katelyn focuses her social media efforts. 40:34 Are email lists worth it? 43:15 The benefits of building a community around your business. 50:58 Choosing to focus on your own business and not what everyone else is doing. 55:54 What marketing mistakes Katelyn sees people making. 1:02:21 What you need to do if you want to raise your prices and have longevity in your business. Katelyn started her professional photography journey as a Junior in college and was shooting 25+ weddings annually within her second year. After growing her business and gaining recognition in national publications such as Professional Photographers Magazine, The Knot, Southern Living Weddings, Southern Weddings and multiple other online publications such a Style Me Pretty, BRIDES, Inspired by This, Real Simple, etc. She then began teaching and coaching photographers from all over the country and internationally. In 2015 she was named “Top Ten Educators to Watch” by Rangefinder Magazine and has had the honor of speaking at conferences such as WPPI, United, Creative at Heart, Local PPA meetings, The Rising Tide Summit, The Reset Conference, The Pursuit Conference, Making Things Happen, The Connect Retreat, Blink and more! Katelyn hosts 2-day workshops throughout the year at her home in Richmond, VA. In 2012 Katelyn was joined by her husband Michael and they are officially a husband/wife team. Since joining forces, Katelyn and Michael average 12-15 weddings annually while teaching thousands of photographers through their online courses and KJ All Access monthly membership program! They are parents to their daughter Everly, their son James in heaven and are puppy parents to Bokeh, the Bichpoo! They are passionate about traveling, home design, & spending time dreaming and brainstorming with their closest friends!! In this week's episode we're chatting with calligrapher & copywriter Ashlyn Carter. Ashlyn has taken the creative industry by storm and has written copy for some of the biggest names in the industry, this conversation is about a different project all together. Ashlyn has recently started a YouTube channel featuring tips on writing effective copy, how to use certain programs to maximize efficiency and some fun glimpses into her life & business! We sit down to hear all about her YouTube journey, how she got started with zero video background and why she dedicates so much time to video! This is a great conversation for anyone interested in producing video for their own business or getting started in YouTube! About Ashlyn: Ashlyn writes well-appointed words for creative women as a copywriter & calligrapher. She left her job as a publicist to go full-time with her calligraphy biz for brides--and realized there were lots of creatives fumbling with their message and sales copy (you can take the girl out of the PR agency ... ). Trading clients like Delta Air Lines and Chick-fil-A to write conversion website copy and launch copy for creative industry dreamies like Jenna Kutcher, Desiree Hartsock Bridal, Katelyn James, Heather Crabtree, Hilary Rushford, Shay Cochrane, and Mary Marantz is just the bee's knees. Her calligraphy has been featured in Style Me Pretty, Southern Weddings, and The Knot. When not writing about herself in third person, she’s usually trying to scratch the ink off her fingernails or grabbing margs and tacos with her husband.
