Abby and Ryan left off last podcast teeing up a follow-up episode about humility. We thought this would be that episode. The Universe had other plans. We sure did try, though. That's a lie. We really didn't. But we think we landed in an okay place. How Abby Manages a Full Plate:Bag it. Ask yourself if it really needs to be done (no. It doesn't)Barter it. Ask yourself if someone else can do it (then ask them to do it)Better it. Ask yourself if it can be done more efficiently (smarter, not harder)How Ryan Manages a Full Plate:Size it up. Figure out everything you have to do and break it down into bite-sized steps.Scale it down. Find every corner you can cut, and force yourself to cut them.Schedule it all. Block off every single step of every single thing on your calendar.Designing your most authentic life:Owning what you want. If you can't make time for it, you probably don't really want it. And that's okay. Admitting that can be freeing.Self Worth. Believe that the life you do want is valuable enough to be prioritized over the life other people want you to live.Boundaries. Design a life that resonates with your essential self, say "yes" to things that align with that, and "no" to everything else. Also, start small. Goal too daunting? Shrink it until it's ridiculously doable.GRATITUDES:Ryan is grateful that he's developing an internal compass for himself and the things he does.Abby is grateful for the heavy but meaningful conversation she got to be a part of recently.TIME CODES:4:00 - We try to do the humility piece. Abby is currently working on her game during COVID-19 as she looks to the possibility of the Olympics Games in Tokyo, next year. Similar to Abby this episode had everything, here's what we covered: How Abby is making the most of lockdown and the core skills she's been developing when you're not allowed at parks or grounds Abby has a Bsc in Physiology and Neurobiology and this has helped her develop world-class habits and breaking down poor ones How Abby focuses on her sleep and how this is directly related to skill development How the Eagles have shifted their culture from secrecy to an open culture where everyone focuses on sharing their knowledge to improve as a group as opposed to individuals This episode was a special one as it highlights the level of detail world-class athletes are willing to go to practice their trade even when everything is against them. Have you ever questioned if it’s possible to build a profitable, successful business that brings you joy, freedom and peace without pushing, crushing, grinding? If so, then episode 147 of the Lead with Love podcast is for you. This is a business love story about a working mom who built a hobby business on the side of her corporate career that now generates multiple seven figures per year. In this episode, I get cozy with my friend and client Abby Walker, who I just adore to pieces. Abby is the CEO of Vivian Lou, a multi-million dollar company dedicated to helping women look and feel better in high heels. She shares how she was fueled by passion when she leaped from a corporate career to googling her way to a path of entrepreneurship. She’s also the author of Strap on a Pair - A Middle-Aged, Middle-Management, Middle-Class Mom's Quest for Something More, written to inspire anyone who feels trapped in the daily grind to take the first step—or the next step—toward finding their something more. Her mission as the CEO of Vivian Lou is to empower women to wear heels 4x longer without pain so they can focus more on their dreams and less on their feet. What you'll hear (and don't want to miss!): :: How Abby and I originally started working together, and what I feel is one of her superpowers :: A time when Abby admits she had fallen out of love with business, and what got her out of it :: How her past career in the corporate world led to her building a multiple 7-figure “hobby” business :: The story of how and why she briefly returned to Corporate America and when she realized that she finally “made it” as an entrepreneur :: When some of Abby’s best ideas come to her and the book she says that literally changed her life You can find the full show notes from this episode over at https://jadahsellner.com/falling-in-love-with-failure-abby-walker-147
If you think about sailing a yacht round the world, what image comes into your mind? Fantastic sunsets, calm seas, whales and dolphins appearing intermittently, and balmy days in a bikini? Yep, me too. The reality of round-the-world ocean racing is somewhat different: I’m sure the wildlife encounters can be pretty special and there are no doubt some spectacular sunsets, but yachts sail 24/7 during their legs at sea and the Volvo Ocean Race is well-known to be one of the toughest sporting events in the world. It is certainly the longest, and involving 9 months at sea, enormous physical and mental human challenge and a daily battle against the elements. Yacht racing is also one of the few sports where men and women compete alongside one another, although it has traditionally been a male-only domain, and for centuries it was considered bad luck to take a woman to sea on your boat. Times are fortunately changing, and my guest this week is Abby Ehler, now veteran of 3 Volvo Ocean Races, including this year’s voyage, where she was part of Team Brunel that placed third overall after a gruelling 9 months of sailing. Abby was previously the boat captain for Team SCA, the first all-female team to compete for 12 years when they took part in the Volvo Ocean Race in the 2014-15 competition. Over 250 women applied for 15 spots on that boat, so clearly there is an appetite for women to compete at the very highest levels within the sport. Off the back of Team SCA, the Magenta Project was founded to promote and encourage women at the top end of sailing. Abby is now their Director of Media and Events. in addition to being a mum to her son and racing regularly both at home and abroad. In this interview we disuss: -How Abby got into sailing - What the Volvo Ocean Race entails - Her hairiest and scariest adventures - How changes to the rules of sailing this year helped more women to be involved at the highest levels - The establishment of the Magenta Project and their support of women in elite sailing - The future of the sport, including the Volvo Ocean Race and Abby's hopes for women in sailing in the years to come Abby is on Twitter @trimore and Instagram @abbyehler and you can find the Magenta Project on social media @themagentaproj. Their website is www.themagentaproject.org More info on the Volvo Ocean Race can be found at www.volvooceanrace.com and if you're interested in getting started in sailing then the best place to go is the RYA website www.rya.org.uk Enjoy!
