The "Utah Violinist" FINDS OUT when ICE makes a SURPRISE VISIT! FAFO!
August 22nd, 2025
In the next episode of our annual What the Hell's summer book series, we are time traveling around the world with experimental archeologist, Sam Kean, who shares with us his latest science narrative novel, Dinner with King Tut: How Rogue Archaeologists Are Re-creating the Sights, Sounds, Smells, and Tastes of Lost Civilizations (Little Brown and Company, 2025). Sam took us on an adventure of the senses, back through the history of mankind and across the globe, from the Egyptian pyramids to the temples of Mexico. “Above all,” he writes, “I hope this book can reveal what unites us today with people from long ago, and help us understand that they were just people, no different than us.” WTH can we learn from living like those in the past? And WTH do caterpillars taste like? Sam Kean is the New York Times-bestselling author of seven books that combine history and science. His stories have appeared in The Best American Science and Nature Writing, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and Slate, among other places, and his work has been featured on NPR. His books The Disappearing Spoon and The Violinist's Thumb were national bestsellers, and both were named an Amazon “Top 5” science books of the year. The violin section of an orchestra is split into two halves: first violins and second violins. Do the firsts really get all the glory while the seconds do the heavy lifting, or are the seconds the orchestra's unsung heroes? In an effort to decide whether some violinists are more equal than others, we explore the history behind this division, unpack stereotypes, and examine the unique challenges of playing in each section. We also look at how this structure can shape careers, and what it's like to transition from one section to the other. Plus, Emma and Cassi face a violin-themed quiz, covering everything from calories burned while playing to musical world records set on bicycles…#PitchMeClassicalInstagram: @londonphilharmonicorchestra TikTok: @lporchestraBluesky: @lporchestraFacebook: @londonphilharmonicorchestra YouTube: @londonphilharmonicorchestra Hosted on Acast. Despite big efforts in recent years to boost diversity in classical music, the genre is still exceedingly difficult to break into. According to an industry wide study conducted last year by the League of American Orchestras, African Americans made up just 2 percent of professional orchestras nationwide. Violinist and educator Brendan Slocumb and activist Afa Dworkin discuss what's holding the industry back and how improved early access music programs in public schools are vital to creating opportunity for historically excluded populations. What happens when a child is handed an instrument they never wanted to play? Cuban violinist Ali Enriquez's story begins with this exact twist of fate: assigned the violin in Havana's rigorous music school system based on her small hands, she initially resisted the instrument that would later become her voice. Now a seasoned performer and composer in Canada, Ali reveals how she transformed resentment into artistry and how music became her bridge between cultures.Ali shares hilarious and heartfelt memories of mandatory piano classes, the shock of adapting to Canada's fast-paced life, and why her violin has become “a companion that's seen me cry more than anyone.”Between unpacking the differences between melodic and harmonic instruments and demonstrating her songwriting process (from “giving birth” to songs to moments of effortless flow), Ali shares how she fell in love with her craft. Life Changes Show with Filippo Voltaggio and cohost Mark Laisure, with Executive Producer Dorothy Lee Donahue Life Changes Show - A New Hope for A New Era - Ep849 Featuring Interview Guest, Spiritual Teacher, Business Strategist, and Environmental Advocate, Cynthia Rivard; and Performance Guest, The Susie Hansen Latin Band Leader and Violinist, Susie Hansen, on The Life Changes Show, Episode 849 Interview Guest: CYNTHIA RIVARD; and Performance Guest: SUSIE HANSEN Don't forget to check out guest, Cynthia Rivard's book: "Hope For A New Era: Turning the Tide, Love and Leadership Through Turbulent Times." A short description of "Hope For A New Era: Turning the Tide, Love and Leadership Through Turbulent Times" from Amazon: The New Earth, paradise on earth and Nirvana are all concepts of a beautiful future that we have been taught awaits the faithful or spiritually connected. It is a misleading narrative, however, because the Divine Law of Creation demands that we take action in order to manifest anything new. This long anticipated Golden Era, humanity's next epoch, is upon us. We can begin, as individuals, to experience raised consciousness and transcendent joy now. And as a global community, we must take action to create the society that will nurture and continue to evolve humanity and our planet into its greatest era. “Rivard's balanced approach to leadership…is a refreshing perspective on how transformative change can unfold beyond traditional political frameworks. Her emphasis on faith in oneself and the power of community lends steady optimism, even when addressing urgent global concerns. Perhaps the most important aspect of the book is how Rivard grounds the work in real-world applicability, recognizing human limitations and divine potential in envisioning incremental, sustainable progress.” - Jamie Michele for Readers' Favorite In these pages, you will learn what it will take to manifest what has been a theoretical concept throughout religious history, into your life now. The new era isn't a different place from where we currently live. It is a concept and upleveling of energies that can shift your consciousness and future into the joy-filled, abundant way of being that awaits each of us. It is also a better future for the earth and all of its inhabitants. It is a golden era that we can co-create when, as conscious global citizens and leaders, we take responsibility for improving our current broken and toxic behaviors and systems. There will be no tomorrow without more compassionate action today. Learn why there is cause for great hope and how you can be a catalyst for some of the massive changes necessary to create the Golden Era and our next chapter of human evolution.

In the second of four programmes across 2025 marking the 300th anniversary of the publication of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, Hannah French explores the Violin Concerto in E major, RV.269 - better known as Spring. From the opening's chorus of birdsong to the rustic dance of the finale via the snoring goatherd of the second movement, Hannah considers the concerto's context and inspirations, and shares other early music influenced by the season of hope and new beginnings. Violinist and musical director Peau Halapua talks to Jesse about her life, career, and favourite things.
Yasi and Steven talk with the energetic Jesùs Florido, a one-time competitive tennis player turned professional violinist, composer, producer and entrepreneur. An innovator at heart, Jesus takes you through his athletic career, its unintended impact in his musical development, his unique musical fusion style, developing into a music virtuoso, and his work in developing music careers through the Màs y Màs Music Foundation. For more on Jesùs' career, go to https://www.jesusflorido.comInstagram: @latinfiddlerBio: With his debut, Heading North, violinist, composer, and bandleader Jesus Florido introduces compelling artistry balanced on a fine axis of musical virtuosity and pure heart. "This album came about from what is not out there from an instrumental point of view," he explains. "Jazz, rock, classical, Latin -- my album is a melting pot."The savory list of sonic influences can be traced back to Venezuela, Jesus' home, and its pastiche of Cuban, Dominican, Trinidadian, and African cultures. Jesus' family is Italian, and in the grand European tradition, opera and classical music also informed his early years. He arrived in the U.S. to further his studies in musical academia but was soon performing in cavernous arenas to enormous audiences with Yo-Yo Ma, the Moody Blues, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant, and Whitney Houston. This high-profile exposure fueled the fire to ignite his own solo career.Heading North is notable for the contributions of the musicians, producers, engineers, and programmers who join Jesus. "It was important to me that project was different from the get-go," he relates. "I wanted to communicate on a higher level." Heading North features a superlative ensemble.Jesus composes in an unconventional miracle of pure inspiration, building songs from a rhythmic and harmonic base -- chords and a drumbeat -- then improvising on top of them. "I may clean it up, but I assure you, on every track what you hear is exactly what came through my head at that moment. To write fresh music I have to recall exactly how I felt about the tune the first time I heard it," he reveals.Across this vivid spectrum of music, the unmistakable timbre of Jesus' violin remains an indelible voice connecting the songs that comprise Heading North. From the sophisticated veneer of the title track to the incendiary Latin grooves of "Mi Negra," the prog-rock influenced "Con Todo," the electro-Santeria vibe of "Gitano" to the funk-informed "Olividado," Jesus bends rhythmic and melodic structures to his will. "Every song is a story without words," he relates. "If I can tell it to the audience when they listen to my record, then I've succeeded." With his violin as a compass, Jesus Florido heads toward a limitless musical horizon with a stunning debut, Heading North."
The violin has a storied place in so much of European classical music. But sometime in the 17th century, it began to intrigue maestros from a very different and ancient music tradition. Fred de Sam Lazaro has the story of one American violinist who sought to explore what’s become known as the Carnatic violin. It's for our arts and cultures series, CANVAS.
