"In a world filled with noise, distractions, and endless demands for our attention, how do we stay connected to what truly matters ?" In this deeply moving conversation, Michael Trainer, co-founder of Global Citizen and author of Resonance; shares a powerful message: the life you're searching for isn't something you force. It's something you learn to tune into. Michael reveals how some of the world's most impactful movements, events, and relationships weren't built through hustle alone, but through resonance. The ability to align with a vision greater than yourself and become an instrument for what wants to emerge through you. From helping launch Global Citizen and raising billions to fight extreme poverty, to navigating his father's battle with dementia, Michael shares the personal experiences that taught him a profound truth: our greatest purpose often lives on the other side of our deepest pain. This episode is an invitation to stop chasing and start listening. To discover your unique song. To find the people who amplify your highest potential. And to create a life that feels less like effort and more like alignment. If you've ever wondered why you still feel disconnected despite achieving so much, or how to find your place in a rapidly changing world, this conversation offers a roadmap back to yourself. The question isn't "How do I become more successful?" The question is: "How do I become so aligned that my life becomes a beautiful expression of who I truly am?"   Timestamps (00:03:00) – Finding Your Song: How to discover the unique purpose you're here to live. (00:12:30) – Staying in Tune: Practical ways to reconnect with yourself in a world full of distractions. (00:23:50) – Building a Movement: What it really takes to inspire people and create lasting impact. (00:32:45) – Turning Pain into Purpose: How your greatest struggles can become your greatest gifts. (00:37:00) – Money & Mission: Why money shouldn't stop your vision and how to attract support. (00:51:00) – The Art of Resonance: How relationships, experiences, and service open unexpected doors.   Some Questions I Ask: • How do you discover the unique song you were born to sing? • What does it really take to build a movement that inspires people and creates lasting impact? • How can we stay connected to our purpose in a world designed to distract us? • Why do certain relationships energize us while others leave us feeling depleted? • What role do pain, adversity, and life's challenges play in uncovering our deepest gifts? • How do we stop letting money limit our vision and start using it as fuel for our mission?   In This Episode, You'll Discover: How to find your unique purpose in a noisy world Why the right relationships can change the trajectory of your life The hidden gift inside life's greatest challenges How to build impact without losing yourself What it truly means to live in resonance Get in Touch: Michael Trainer https://michaeltrainer.net Create a life that is a masterpiece. There is a conversation most of us have had with ourselves — sometimes for years. I know this person isn't good for me. I feel it every time I leave. I'm smaller after them than before. But I can't just walk away. We have history. Maybe it's me. In this episode of Resonance, Michael Trainer names something most of us have felt but never had the language for: the moment your body arrives at a conclusion your mind refuses to accept. Drawing on Dr. Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory, Ohio State University research showing that hostile relationships heal wounds 60% more slowly, and the batteries and black holes framework from his book Resonance, Michael makes the case that your nervous system is not your anxiety. It is your most ancient and sophisticated intelligence — and it has been trying to tell you something. This episode is not a permission slip to walk away from everyone who challenges you. It is an invitation to stop cross-examining the only witness in your life that has never once lied to you. What you'll take away: The difference between growth-discomfort and damage-discomfort. The biological cost of chronic relational dysregulation. The batteries and black holes framework for auditing your relationships. And why letting go — done with honesty and love — is sometimes the most generous thing you can do. "You are not curating a social circle. You are curating a nervous system. Choose accordingly." Michael Trainer has spent 30 years learning from Nobel laureates, neuroscientists, and wisdom keepers worldwide. He's the author of RESONANCE: The Art and Science of Human Connection (March 31, 2026), co-creator of Global Citizen and the Global Citizen Festival, and host of the RESONANCE podcast.Featured in Forbes, Inc, Good Morning America. You are an instrument. Right now, something is tuning you — your phone, your feed, your anxiety, the fluorescent hum of a world that profits from your distraction. The question isn't whether you're being tuned. The question is by what. In this episode, Michael Trainer returns from two weeks in Mexico — not for the margaritas, but for something far rarer: silence, stillness, and the deliberate work of unwinding a nervous system that had been running a six-year playoff season. What follows is a meditation on what it means to come back home to yourself. Michael weaves together neuroscience and ancient wisdom — the intelligence of the vagus nerve, the wisdom of a traditional Sri Lankan healer, the daily walks of Nelson Mandela, the voice of Young Pueblo — to answer a question most of us are too busy to ask: What actually brings me back into tune? The answer, it turns out, isn't just personal restoration. It's the key to every meaningful relationship you'll ever build. Because the people who make your heart feel seen and your nervous system feel calm? Those aren't accidents. They're resonance. And you can engineer the conditions where that resonance becomes possible — if you're willing to first do the harder, quieter work of finding your own frequency. As Miles Davis knew: the music lives in the space between the notes. This episode is that space. http://www.resonance.biz Michael Trainer has spent 30 years learning from Nobel laureates, neuroscientists, and wisdom keepers worldwide. Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week on the podcast I'm back in Accra, back on the Continent, just in time to commemorate African Liberation Day--Africa Day 2026. Last year around this time, my guest and I were preparing for our respective sessions at AfroTalks 2025 @ University of Ghana-Legon where we shared stories and proposed solutions centering the theme "HOW?" aimed at fostering critical introspection, sustainable community impact, and the amplification of African stories by Africans. I shared insights taken from our Future of Work salon series and featured Glocal Citizens specifically engaged in impact-driven solutions for us by us. My guest, Dr. Ashley D. Milton was part of a duo presenting The Triangle Offensive Policy. She joins us a year later to share how her work has progressed and her consortium prepares to release the The State of the Africa Diaspora Report, a first-of-its-kind continental grounding document examining how Africa and its global diaspora connect across mobility, investment, culture, skills, governance, technology, and development systems. The report brings together policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs, creatives, and community stakeholders across Africa and the diaspora to shape a more coordinated and regenerative future. As a strategist, researcher, and systems builder working at the intersection of Africa, its global diaspora, and the future of regenerative economic development she is the Founder and Managing Director of She Grows It™ (SGI), a Pan-African consulting and investment migration advisory firm. Ashley leads work across green infrastructure, trade and industry, tourism and hospitality, diaspora engagement, governance strategy, and emerging technology systems designed to support long-term African growth and resilience. She has advised on projects ranging from IFC EDGE green building certification and sustainable development strategy to diaspora policy frameworks, investment positioning, and institutional ecosystem development. Episode Notes The Wedding and the Marriage: On Creative Devotion and the Gift of the Slow Burn What does it actually mean to be devoted to your work — not the version of it you imagined, but the version that wants to exist? In this deeply personal episode, Michael reflects on the six-year journey of writing Resonance: The Art and Science of Human Connection — and the humbling gap between the grand launch he envisioned and the initiation the universe had in store. Recorded live from Tulum, Mexico, just weeks after the book's release, this is a raw and honest meditation on ego, surrender, patience, and what it means to stay in the work when the fanfare doesn't come. What You'll Hear in This Episode: The moment Michael nearly folded after five years — and the four-month ultimatum that changed everything Why he moved to Austin, found the right environment, and finally cracked the book's structure The emotional experience of recording the audiobook and hearing his "composition" for the first time How a crypto portfolio hit by 100% China tariffs wiped out his marketing budget — and what he did next The difference between the wedding (the launch) and the marriage (the lifelong commitment to the work) Why he stopped chasing the bestseller list and started thinking like Ryan Holiday's perennial bestseller What Esther Perel's Mating in Captivity and Steven Pressfield's The War of Art teach us about the slow burn The Miles Davis principle: music is what lives in the space between the notes Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom as a model for creative endurance How the principles of Resonance — listening, devotion, releasing transactional expectation — apply to your creative life, not just your relationships Key Themes: Creative initiation and the fire that forges you Releasing egoic expectation vs. listening to what wants to live The gift of the slow burn and the perennial work Environment as a creative catalyst Dissonance vs. resonance in relationships — and in your work What vision fasts and initiatory rituals teach us about patience and preparation Quotes From This Episode: "It's not about the night of the wedding. It's going to be about the years of commitment in the marriage." "How can I listen to what wants to live — and become an instrument for that song?" "Music is what lives in the space between the notes." — Miles Davis "I wasn't positive how the ideas came together in the most poignant way. But I knew it was in there." Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week on the podcast it's an NYU affair with a side of Columbia University, Harvard University and UCLA. I first met my guest as fellow New York University students/alumni in the late 1990's, at a time when slam poetry was beginning to reaching global audiences with influences from hip hop music and other activist movements. Fast foward after more than 20 years to earlier this spring when our paths crossed again at an event hosted by fellow Glocal Citizen and Director of NYU Accra, Chiké Frankie Edozien - The Labone Dialogues. Executive produced by the late and great, Harry Belafonte, the show tells stories of wrongful incarceration through spoken word poetry, hip hop theater, calypso, comedy and classical music. He founded the Prison Education Program at UCLA in 2015 and in 2019, the program and his performances at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts were featured on the debut episode of LA Stories, which won an Emmy Award. Welcome to the first author interview in our mini series, Eco-Justice and Climate Action, where we aim to explore inspiring projects at the intersection of climate justice and action research. This series highlights work featured in the 2025 special issue of the Canadian Journal for Action Research, guest edited by Dr. Blane Harvey. We are excited to share these thought-provoking contributions with you.In today's episode, our co-hosts Joe and Shikha are joined by Ipek Türeli, Nathalie Malhamé, and Sarah Nabi who co-authored “Little Architects, Big Ideas: Climate Action Through Design-Based Learning, where big ideas meet small (but mighty) designers. Together, they reflect on their creative and inspiring collaboration in Montreal, Quebec, connecting Ipek's work at the Peter Fung Architecture Faculty at McGill University, with Nathalie and Sarah's fourth grade classes in Royal Vale School. They share their motivations behind the collaboration, surprise findings along the way, and the gratifying experience of exhibiting the students' work at both institutions. The conversation begins with introductions and the story of how the project came to life [2:00]. This led to exploring deeper connections between architecture, environmental justice, and experiential education [8:09] along with challenges and complexities that our guests Nathalie, Sarah and Ipek encountered and navigated in their project [13:18]. They then reflect on the role and importance of the undergraduate architecture students for the success of the collaboration [17:43]. We ask about the young designer's work and what it may reveal about different understandings of climate justice. Through these examples, we explore the surprises and tensions that emerged in the final designs [20:37], leading into a rich discussion about why exhibitions became such a powerful space for sharing this work and supporting student learning [25: 08]. For such a rich and impactful project, we were keen to learn the lasting impacts [30:11] before closing with final reflection and even a mic-drop moment!Thank you Ipek, Nathalie, and Sarah for sharing your time and work with us.And thanks for tuning in to this episode of the Action Research Podcast, created by Joe Levitan, Shikha Diwakar, Cory Legassic, Vanessa Gold, and Adam Stieglitz.Produced by Shikha Diwakar and Vanja Lugonjic.Subscribe to our podcast on most major podcast distribution platforms, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Heartfelt Greetings, Glocal Citizens. This week's encore episode is a salve for my heavy heart. I'm resharing it as a reminder of life's certainties; because it reflects some of the roots experiences that my guest, Global Ghanaian, death doula and author of Briefly Perfectly Human, Alua Arthur and I share; and because care for the aging has become a feature focus of my life story, particulary since the start of the pandemic. On April 4th, my father, Peter Otoe Adu took his leave from the body that was the man I know as Daddy, Dad, PO, Peter and papa. He was 86. Last week on the podcast, I mentioned the long overdue solutionscape and stretch salon series. The first topic we covered in these live sessions--the future of work in care for the aging, is an ever-timely discussion that will go live later this month. Woven into this series will be small tributes in memory of the briefly, perfectly human life dad lived and what I hope will be inspiration for us all to normalize conversations, pay attention and act in the interest of not just our elders but our inevitably aging selves. Where to find Alua? See the show notes for Episode 164Special Guest: Alua Arthur.

Greetings Glocal Citizens! This year our Women's Herstory Month series has taken us for the first time to Botswana and Norway; we stopped in the UK, picked up flavors from Nigeria, Sudan, Zambia, Netherlands, Philippines, Belgium, Brazil and South Africa; went on a future forward mission in Kenya, and we're landing home in a flashback forward conversation with fellow Ghanaian-American and early Glocal Citizen, Nana Amoako-Anin. Nana first joined us on the podcast in January 2020 in a time when wellness was often taken for granted or an afterthought for later. Then the global pandemic, COVID-19 changed everything. Wellness is now having a moment. However, as we'll discuss in the conversation, the moment calls for depth, not trend, to sustain real mindset and lifestyle shifts on the personal and professional levels. Nana writes about this at Wellness in Black and lives and works it as a social entrepreneur and organizational leader. She is best known as the founder of Bliss Yoga Accra, Ghana's first full-service yoga studio. With a background in law, she brings cross-sector expertise to her work, which bridges global perspectives with local impact, positioning her as a thought leader in mindful leadership, mentorship, social innovation and international executive strategy. In this conversation we catch up on evolving realities around wellness for Africans and in Ghana as well as her experience diversifying the what and how of work, guided by her enduring committment to staying people centered. And much, much more. Where to find Nana? https://www.nanaamoakoanin.com/ @ Bliss Yoga Accra On Glocal Citizens At CrowdReason What's Nana reading? Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week in our continuing Women's Herstory Month series, we're in another new country--from southern Africa last week we're landing in Scandinavia on our first trip to Norway via Sudan, Zambia, The Philippines, Netherlands, Ghana and South Africa--all places my guest this week has called home. Sarah Osman is a cognitive psychologist, global development specialist, and social entrepreneur with twenty years of experience across Europe, Africa, and Asia. Born in Khartoum, Sudan, and shaped by a life lived across multiple continents, she has built her career at the intersection of applied behavioral science and international development, helping major organizations translate insights about human decision-making into programs that create lasting social change. As the founder of Osman Advisory Services, Sarah has worked with international organizations such as the Council of Europe, World Vision, and the Inter-Parliamentary Union on some of the most complex behavioral challenges in global development. In 2024, she founded Ela, a membership community for women of color building their own consulting practices. Ela is grounded in the conviction that structural inequity in the consulting sector cannot be solved by individual effort alone: it requires community, peer accountability, and the kind of behavioral design thinking that Sarah has spent two decades applying in the field. Ela members are already experiencing tangible transformation in how they position themselves and grow with confidence. Sarah is currently building a new platform for Africa-focused professionals who want to harness the power of behavioral and consumer insights in their work and sector. Currently based in Oslo, Sarah is a true ‘glocal' citizen: Sudanese by heritage, Pan-African by spirit, European by dwelling, and wholly at home in the space between local realities and global systems. My grandfather was six foot four. Always in a suit. Captain in the US Air Force. A man of very few words. Throughout his entire life, he never once told my father that he loved him. Not once. That silence — the gap between what we feel and what we express — is the central wound of our time. In this episode, I share the story at the heart of my book RESONANCE: what happened when my father decided to break a generational cycle of unspoken love, what my grandfather did with a napkin that said everything his words couldn't, and what I found in my father's desk years later during his final days. I also explore what Dr. Matthew Lieberman's research at UCLA reveals about why this matters neurologically — how social pain activates the same brain circuits as physical pain, why the Surgeon General has declared loneliness equivalent to smoking fifteen cigarettes a day, and why the Harvard Study of Adult Development found that relationship quality predicts health and longevity more powerfully than diet, exercise, or genetics. This is not about self-improvement. This is about the question most of us are afraid to ask: can you let someone all the way in?
