Listen to see why I'm so enthusiastic about Rockschool's Rock/Pop Piano grades for piano! Following on from my previous review, I also give more information for those considering the new Rockschool Classical grades. Show Notes Excellent for fixing common rhythmic weaknesses in classical students [3:05] The difference between the graded exams and the performance certificates [4:30] The improvisation section was poorly implemented in classical syllabus- makes much more sense in the Rock/Pop syllabus [8:40] More on the unsuitability of Rockschool for face-to-face classical exams (in the UK) [10:25] A bit of a digression- why I would personally encourage my students to go for face-to-face exams in general rather than prerecorded online exams [12:30] Flaws in Rockschool's prerecorded online graded exam option [18:10] Benefits of Rockschool's format of pieces with backing tracks [20:00] Rockschool pieces are much more challenging than classical pieces at the same grade [23:10] A good fit for students not that interested in classical or jazz [25:20] About the excellent Online Learning Platform- free for teachers [29:30] A look at the highlights and impressions of each individual grade- in order from Debut to Grade 8 [36:55] The graded exams can provide a good foundation for jazz [49:40] Could be useful for traditional classical teachers to make their own way through the books to become more familiar and comfortable with rock/pop/jazz genres and improvisation [51:20] Notes: I uploaded a video of me playing one of the grade 7 pieces to YouTube (I added the guitar solo as well- obviously this isn't part of the normal piano exam!): https://youtu.be/pI-yiJDhDjc The intro/outro music is my jazz arrangement of the Rachmaninov Adagio from Symphony #2, you can watch the whole thing here if you like: https://youtu.be/hMqREAngb4s

Inexorable forces are propelling the growth of e-learning at a blistering pace. Online-learning markets were ignited by high education costs, business training programs and a wave of tech innovations, then scorching pandemic demand turned the market into an inferno. The market has legs far beyond the pandemic with constant requests coming from businesses, universities and K-12 schools, eager to train and upskill workers. Little wonder a myriad of companies look to gain traction in the space since the online education market that stood at just $144 billion in 2019 is expected to catapult past $374 billion by 2026. Even more astounding is that these stellar-growth projections are pre-pandemic numbers, and market estimates should easily blow past current forecasts. However, to deliver e-learning that works, tech platforms must address and meet the widely disparate needs of individual schools and varied businesses. A one-size-fits-all approach is doomed to fail when trying to educate, especially in a virtual venue. There's a critical need for tailored programs as well as wholesale improvement in the way content is created and delivered. Technology innovator Amesite Inc. (NASDAQ: AMST) (Profile) has established a new paradigm in e-learning. The company has created what is arguably the most advanced artificial intelligence driven online learning platform in the entire industry. With the capacity to upload an organization's entire training and educational materials into a single point of access, Amesite's customizable SaaS (software-as-a-service) platform is engaging, easy to use and delivers concrete measurable results. The company's cloud-based platform and content creation services uniquely provide fully managed learning environments that easily integrate and work for business, universities, and K-12 schools. Taking a different tack, Chegg Inc. (NYSE: CHGG) operates direct-to-student learning platforms as well as provides digital textbook rentals, online tutoring and other student services. SaaS behemoth Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) offers a portfolio of business training applications and Office 365 Education for students, faculty and staff to meet virtually, create content and share resources. This transformation of the education experience is made possible by technology from companies such as Cloudflare Inc. In this episode, Maria talks with Aditya Nagrath, cofounder and chancellor of Elephant Learning. Aditya graduated with a dual major in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Denver, Colorado. While working full time as a software developer, he completed his PhD in Mathematics and Computer Science and founded Elephant Head Software. In 2016, Aditya co-founded Elephant Learning to bring transformational change to America's education system.  Elephant Learning is an automated math academy that guarantees children learn one year of math in three months. All it takes is thirty minutes of math a week on the Elephant Learning app. They use algorithms to detect what a child does and does not understand. Children receive activities proven to teach math concepts faster, more efficiently, and with better results. Parents receive real-time reports on their child’s progress, plus handy advice and coaching to take the concepts their child is learning outside of the app and apply them to real life. Teachers get free access to a dashboard developed by Elephant Learning to monitor their students' progress. They can easily identify the support each of their students needs to continue to advance in their math class. Teachers also have access to learning material to help them become more proficient in their teaching. Maria and Aditya discuss how students become lifelong learners confident in their math abilities, free from math-related anxiety, and capable of thriving in a STEM-centric future. They also unpack how math proficiency helps students perform better in problem-solving and build a growth mindset to thrive in life and work. This is an insightful conversation with a visionary leader on a mission to change how the world teaches math.  Where to find more about Aditya Nagrath and Elephant Learning:Aditya Nagrath on LinkedInElephant LearningElephant Learning on YouTube Mentioned in this episode:NAEP Mathematics AssessmentMath MattersMontessori Education and Maria Montessori The 4-Hour Body Hellen Keller Listen to this episode and explore: Learning computer programming and studying computer science and mathematics (4:35)Co-founding Elephant Learning in 2016 to solve America’s Math problem (6:20)How Elephant Learning is teaching their students the Math language (8:20)Placing students at the right level and adapting to their progress (11:20)The report and feedback parents receive to assess and discuss their children’ progress (14:40)What feedback children receive and what they love about Elephant Learning (17:00)How they create results without overwhelming the students (18:50)The development of the Elephant Learning App and the touch-screen experience (21:05)The critical role of math in a STEM-centric and technology-empowered future of education and work (22:05)How Elephant Learning helps students use math as a problem-solving tool (24:00)The success stories of students with ADHD, dyslexia, autism and other learning impairments (25:50)How struggling students overcome their math anxiety and become confident learners (27:30)How teachers use the Elephant Learning dashboard in their classrooms to quickly identify the students who need one-to-one help (29:50)Offering teachers free training material and resources for each math subject at the right level and the right time (32:20)The overwhelmingly positive response of teachers at the early stage of Elephant Learning (33:00)Supporting teachers’ classroom fund and offering tuition scholarships to those in need (34:50)The implications of the pandemic on Elephant Learning and the Covid gap for so many students (37:15)Continue to fulfil Elephant Learning’s vision and creating a new video-based algebra curriculum (40:15)"What would our society look like if we could create politicians and entrepreneurs who could understand math and develop critical mental models and problem-solving skills?" Business is Boring is a weekly podcast series presented by The Spinoff in association with Callaghan Innovation. Host Simon Pound speaks with innovators and commentators focused on the future of New Zealand. This week he talks to Dr Michelle Dickinson (Nanogirl) about her new online learning platform. There are a lot of businesses right now looking at a completely changed future. Many people working in events or in industries relying on travel and tourism especially. What do you do when you look at the next six months and all your revenue is gone? For some, there will be no easy answer, and we really feel for you. For others there may be ways you can change your offering and do something new with your skillset. On Business is Boring today we speak with one of New Zealand’s top science communicators, who you may have recently seen working and talking with the Prime Minister to help share awareness and information around COVID-19.Dr Michelle Dickinson is well known as Nanogirl, her science communicating, experiment making, science cookbook authoring alter-ego. With a PhD in engineering specialising in nanotechnology, and a love for sparking interest in science, Dickinson has worked to increase the quality of our national conversation through media appearances, a Herald column and live events, events that can’t happen for the foreseeable future.Faced with this drop in income and uncertainty for her team, this spirit of invention and experimentation kicked in. The team pivoted over the course of three days to create an online learning platform that can help kids stuck at home experiment with items found around the house and learn through doing. With a lesson every weekday, for only a dollar a day, and a buy one give one model, it’s already finding a great audience. To talk the journey to here, changing everything, and getting the new venture up while also stepping up to share quality information in the media, Dr Michelle Dickinson joined the podcast, recorded on the first day of level four lockdown restrictions in New Zealand. You can find her new venture here: https://nanogirlslab.com/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Outschool is a community marketplace of live online classes for K-12. Today, we have the great pleasure of hearing from Amir Nathoo - one of the founding partners of Outschool. As an innovative learning platform that is social, interactive, and online, Outschool is uniquely positioned to meet the exploding need for learner-directed education. In fact, Outschool has currently reached nearly 40,000 families and 57,000 learners with 10,000 classes. The endless possibilities for new partnerships in education between schools and online platforms are only starting to emerge, and Amir shares with us some of the intriguing cooperative pathways that glisten on the horizon. Schools that are looking for ways to tighten up, freshen up, and liven up their offering will benefit from hearing the discussion with Amir. Listen and consider how Outschool might interface with your programs and curriculum - without ever leaving the comfort of the classroom.Quotes:02:00 “The quality of the first class experience that you have on Outschool is really, really important to us and is where we are focused in our current product cycle. With a new type of learning interaction, it’s really important that your first experience is good - and then, that drives growth with referrals.”08:30 “The decision to enroll in a class is a shared decision between the parent and the learner.” 13:50 “Every kid is different, and they change with time. What that means is that it’s not possible with a single mode of education to satisfy all of any one kid’s needs or every kid. A network of services needs to exist in order to make the system more personalized, meet kids’ needs, and inspire them.”18:50 “Part of the value of the interactive format is this idea that - there’s no single best math teacher in the world. If there were, we would just record them and broadcast them to everyone. Great teachers can come from a variety of different backgrounds and come in with a variety of different goals.” 26:38 “I think it’s really important to test changes and to iterate before rolling them out in a high-stakes environment. One of the benefits of technology...is that we’ve been able to create this fast iteration which reduces risk and creates better results. If Outschool can be a tool to enable that faster iteration for schools, we’d be absolutely delighted to talk with them about that.”31:20 “We do believe that there’s a need and an opportunity to reinvent learning experiences outside of school. So much pressure is put on teachers and schools, and it’s unrealistic.”Here are some resources mentioned in our discussion:Amy Anderson at ReSchool Colorado - reschoolcolorado.orgTranscend - www.transcendeducation.orgWhere to learn more about the guest:Amir at Linkedin - linkedin.com/in/amirnathooAmir at Outschool - outschool.comamir@outschool.comAmir’s Blog - amir.ioAmir on Twitter - amirnathooWhere to learn more about Enrollhand:Website: www.enrollhand.comOur webinar: https://webinar-replay.enrollhand.comOur free Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/schoolgrowth/You can always reach out by emailing hello@enrollhand.com
