How Awards Have Powered an Animator's Business with Emma Youell, investigates the rise of the creative force behind Emma Youell Design. In this edition of The Business Awards Show, we discuss Emma's rapid rise from freelancer to award-winning business owner. As an introduction, Emma shares her fascinating journey, starting with her "accidental" entry into the world of motion graphics. Despite initially wanting to avoid the corporate world, she found her niche in the financial services sector, learning how to turn complex, "boring" subjects into engaging, spicy content. She also opens up about her passion for the heritage sector and how her hobby as a metal detectorist influences her creative work. The heart of the conversation focuses on Emma's incredible success with business awards. In just under two years, she has navigated local, national, and even global award ceremonies. Emma discusses the "click moment" when she realised she needed to learn how to run a business, not just do the creative work. Furthermore, she got clarity on how entering awards could help her build vital trust in the marketplace. Emma reveals the very real impact of being a finalist, including how a single networking event led to a whopping £12k contract—for an award she didn't even win! She also offers great advice on overcoming imposter syndrome, reminding listeners that they are the experts in their own fields. Key Takeaways: How animation can solve business problems, from FAQ videos to event graphics. Why the "evidence" in your award entry is just as important as the creative work itself. Make a Logo on Fiverr CES Unveiled is always the appetizer before the main course, and for CES 2026 it once again delivered a dense, fast-moving look at where consumer and enterprise tech is heading next. Walking the show floor felt like a compressed version of the entire event: accessibility tech, smart home, robotics, energy, health, and creative tools all packed into one evening. It's also where you start to see early contenders for the Best of CES conversation, long before the doors officially open. The products below stood out as a strong cross-section of what's coming to CES 2026, from practical problem-solvers to genuinely futuristic ideas. A New Kind of Display for Dyslexia One of the more meaningful demos at CES Unveiled was a specialized monitor designed to help people with dyslexia read more comfortably. The display uses adjustable light frequency and brightness to reduce visual stress and the letter “doubling” effect many dyslexic readers experience. Instead of software tricks, this is a hardware-level solution built into the screen itself, letting each user tune the display to their own comfort level. It's a reminder that some of the most important innovation at CES isn't about flash, but about accessibility and quality of life. Lucrome's Electrochromic Smart Labels Lucrome showed off ultra-thin electrochromic panels that can be embedded directly into packaging or labels. These can change their display—lines, symbols, warnings, or indicators—using very little power and a simple battery source. The real promise here is dynamic packaging: freshness indicators on food, changing price or status tags, or smart logistics labels. Lucrome even picked up an Innovation Award, and it's easy to see why this could quietly change how physical products communicate information. Bienesis and Smart Crop Protection Agritech had a strong showing with Bienesis, a connected system designed to protect crops from weather and environmental threats. It uses a large, deployable canopy combined with sensors and a targeted deployment algorithm to respond to frost, hail, excessive sun, or moisture. Farmers can monitor and control the system from their phone, even when they're not in the field. It's a very “CES” take on farming: automation, connectivity, and data all coming together to protect yield and quality. RoboTin's All-in-One Cleaning Robot RoboTin is aiming high with a robot that doesn't just vacuum or mop, but also washes and dries carpets and cleans itself afterward. The base station handles dirty water, drying, and maintenance, turning the whole process into a largely hands-free experience. With a target price around $1,000, it's clearly positioned as a premium, do-everything floor care solution, and it shows how far home robotics have moved toward true automation. Droplet by Hydrific: Smarter Water Monitoring Smart home water management got a big upgrade with Droplet from Hydrific. Using ultrasonic sensors and a comprehensive app dashboard, it tracks real-time water usage, detects leaks, and can even integrate with systems like Home Assistant to shut off water remotely. For anyone who's ever worried about a burst pipe while away from home, this is exactly the kind of quiet, practical innovation that feels like a future necessity rather than a luxury. Kokomo: The Emotional Companion Robot Luden's AI brought Kokomo, a small companion robot designed around emotional interaction. It follows people, reacts with expressive “eyes,” and is meant to build a kind of emotional connection through daily interactions. While companion robots are still a developing category, Kokomo shows how much focus is now being placed on personality and behavior, not just movement and function. Allergen Alert: Portable Food Safety Food allergies are a serious, everyday concern, and Allergen Alert is tackling that with a portable device that can test food for allergens before you eat it. You place a small sample into the unit and it provides a readout indicating potential allergens like peanuts or shellfish. For people who constantly have to worry about cross-contamination, this kind of pocket-sized tester could be genuinely life-changing. Tovic's Electrochromic Glasses Tovic demonstrated electrochromic glasses that can switch from clear to tinted at the push of a button. They're designed for everything from sports to photography, where you might move quickly between indoor and outdoor environments. With UV400 protection and a battery that can last weeks with regular use, they're a slick example of how materials science keeps quietly improving everyday gear. Verge TS Pro Electric Motorcycle On the more dramatic end of the floor was the Verge TS Pro electric motorcycle. With claimed fast-charging, a long range, and sports-bike acceleration, it's another sign that electric vehicles aren't just about efficiency anymore—they're about performance and design too. With reservations already open and a premium price tag, this is clearly aimed at enthusiasts who want their EVs to make a statement. HP, AI NAS, and Smart Pet Tech HP showed off the ultra-compact EliteDesk 8 Mini G1a, an AI-ready desktop that underscores how small and powerful office PCs are getting. Nearby, an AI-powered NAS system focused on smarter data search and privacy showed how storage is evolving beyond simple file boxes. And in the pet tech corner, an AI-enabled cat food and water station demonstrated mood detection, health monitoring, and smart hydration—because of course even pet bowls are becoming intelligent. Teton Medical's Smart Ear Imaging Device Health tech also had a strong presence with Teton Medical's combined ear imaging and treatment device. It uses cameras and LED/infrared to inspect the ear, track temperature, and help detect inflammation or issues that could lead to hearing loss. It's positioned as something you could keep at home, making preventative care and monitoring far more accessible. LiberLive C2: A Stringless Guitar Music tech got a fun twist with the LiberLive C2, a completely stringless guitar-style instrument. Players press buttons and strum to trigger chords and patterns, with visual indicators guiding what to play next. It's compact, foldable, and designed to make playing and learning more approachable, blurring the line between instrument and interactive music system. EcoFlow Delta 3 and Pro Ultra X Power Stations Power and energy storage were big themes again this year, and EcoFlow's new Delta 3 series and Pro Ultra X systems showed why. These modular, stackable power stations can run anything from small devices to major home appliances, making them ideal for emergencies, RVs, or off-grid setups. The Pro Ultra X even picked up an Innovation Award, and it feels like a strong contender for any Best of CES shortlists in the power category. CES Unveiled 2026 made it clear that this year's show will be less about one single breakthrough and more about dozens of very practical, very real improvements across daily life, work, health, and creativity. If this is the preview, the full CES 2026 floor is going to be packed. Check out the Geekazine Merch, including "I AM AI " T-Shirt. Thanks for reading! This episode is a double from my visit to the Advanced Lateral Flow Conference. Usability is Innovation: Atomo DiagnosticsAtomo Diagnostics set out more than a decade ago to solve a surprisingly human problem in diagnostics: complexity. Founder John Kelly describes how even the best rapid tests—validated in pristine lab environments—often fail when they reach the real world, where people have no training, and shaky instructions. That gap between laboratory precision and real-world usability has huge implications for reliability, trust, and ultimately regulatory approval.Atomo's core insight is simple: most errors in point-of-care testing aren't biological—they're behavioral. The accessories people use in the field (cheap pipettes, dropper bottles, uncalibrated parts) invite mistakes, and the more steps required, the higher the failure rate. Kelly and his team approached the problem the way a designer might: observe how real users behave, then engineer around human nature instead of fighting it.To validate their approach, they went straight to the source—literally to the community—conducting studies in Africa with low-literacy users who received only picture-based instructions. “If it needs a lot of explanation, it's probably not obvious,” Kelly notes. The goal: build a device that is self-explanatory and self-correcting.Their solution, the Pascal platform, integrates every accessory needed to run a test—lancet, blood collection, and buffer reagent—directly into one cartridge. Instead of multiple steps and parts, users simply collect, press, and go. Each step is interlocked to prevent mistakes; for instance, the reagent button won't activate until blood is correctly loaded. It's engineering that enforces proper sequence, eliminating user doubt and waste.Kelly describes how this design delivers the right volume, in the right order, every time—removing the “what if I did it wrong?” anxiety that undermines confidence in results. It's the difference between a reliable diagnostic and a false sense of security.Atomo's HIV self-test—registered with the World Health Organization and distributed across Australia, Europe, and the UK—has demonstrated greater than 99% concordance between trained and untrained users. The company also supports a blood-based pregnancy test (approved in Europe and Brazil) that detects earlier than urine tests, and they're now developing the world's first active syphilis test, capable of distinguishing between current and previously treated infections. What's equally smart is their business model flexibility. Recognizing that many manufacturers already have validated lateral flow cassettes on the market, Atomo developed a “clip-on” usability upgrade that integrates their collection and buffer technology without requiring full retooling or revalidation—a bridge between old workflows and modern design.Beyond infectious disease, Kelly sees growth in at-home wellness and chronic condition monitoring—everything from testosterone and thyroid tests to celiac screening. The platform's adaptability makes it attractive for home use and clinical trials alike. One example: a pharmaceutical partner using Atomo's device to monitor liver toxicity in patients remotely, reducing clinic visits from three times a week to “only when needed.” It's better for patients, cheaper for healthcare systems, and faster for research. The bigger story here is that usability is innovation. Kelly's approach turns workflow design into a driver of impact. Instead of chasing exotic chemistry, Atomo focused on reliability and trust—two things that ultimately decide whether a test makes it into people's hands. As diagnostics and healthcare move increasingly into the home, Atomo's design philosophy feels ahead of its time. If the pandemic taught us anything, it's that people can and will take responsibility for their health—if we give them tools that make sense.Pitch Competition Finalist: EAZEBIOI also sat down with Ying Chen, founder of EAZEBIO, one of the Innovation Award finalists. Her company's portable strip-based diagnostic platform combines CRISPR and AI to bring precision health to everyone, especially in low-resource settings. The Problem: Reactive HealthcareYing opens by explaining the fundamental flaw she sees in today's healthcare system—it's reactive. We wait for symptoms to become severe before acting. EAZEBIO's mission is to shift the paradigm toward proactive, precision healthcare, emphasizing early detection and personalized intervention. Her team focuses on diseases often overlooked at the root-cause level—metabolic, autoimmune, and cardiovascular conditions.Their aim is to bridge the gap between scientific breakthroughs and universal access, translating biomarker data into actionable health insights. As Ying puts it, “We hope proactive, personalized care can provide health equity for everyone, no matter where they live.”Ying's background is a blend of pediatrics, research science, and business—she holds both a PhD and an MBA. Her experience inspired her to adapt the power of CRISPR from the lab to the home.In their prototype for sepsis detection, EAZYBIO's system uses CRISPR to identify antimicrobial resistance genes—the genetic clues that reveal which pathogen is causing an infection. The test also detects human protein biomarkers, providing a two-layered view of infection and host response. Here's how it works:* The CRISPR complex acts like a molecular “scissor,” recognizing and cutting specific DNA or RNA sequences associated with infection.* These sequences are tagged with a cortisol-based reporter. When the CRISPR cut happens, cortisol is released.* The released cortisol binds to split reporter proteins, generating a visible signal on a lateral flow strip.* An AI-powered app then reads and interprets the signal into a semi-quantitative result. This approach achieves roughly 300x signal amplification compared to conventional lateral flow assays—crucial for fast, reliable results.Sepsis is notoriously time-sensitive; treatment delays of more than three hours can dramatically increase mortality. Ying emphasizes that EAZEBIO's platform could enable clinicians to identify pathogens and select the correct antibiotic within one hour—a potentially life-saving improvement. While sepsis is their initial target, the underlying platform is modular and scalable, enabling future multiplexing for 3–5 pathogens per test. Beyond acute disease, the same technology could support early cancer detection and wellness testing, making high-quality diagnostics as easy as a home pregnancy test.Ying speaks with humility about being a finalist at ALFC, but it's clear the recognition validates EAZEBIO's bold vision. The conference gave her valuable exposure to peers across R&D and manufacturing, as well as insights into where diagnostics are heading over the next decade. Her takeaway? Collaboration and accessibility matter just as much as innovation. “It's not just technology—it's about bringing care to everyone, whether they live in a big city or a rural village.” This is a public episode. Steve Nygren is the founder and CEO of Serenbe, a wellness community created as a model to demonstrate that preserving green space interlaced with agriculture, housing and retail is not only economically viable, but the future of community wellbeing. Nygren, a visionary placemaker—someone who specializes in transforming public spaces into areas that foster community, connection and well-being—has pulled together his expertise in Start in Your Own Backyard: Transforming Where We Live with Radical Common Sense, a blueprint for developing sustainable communities where citizens of all generations can thrive, "and awe is found in everyday moments." He says this requires understanding the following: The unintended consequences of sprawl, and why clustered development supports more green space, more housing and lower costs Why being disconnected from nature and each other is at the root of many environmental, societal and health-related woes Tactics to encourage a local food-based economy (and why that matters) How small yards, front porches, and blueberry bushes at crosswalks lead to strong, supportive neighborhoods The benefits of aging in place, and how to nurture connections between uncaged elders and free-range kids Nygren says that for many Americans, life is no longer working. We are increasingly sick, stressed, anxious, and unhappy. Many feel left behind by the economy, disillusioned by once-respected institutions, and helpless in the face of environmental decline. Nygren argues that much of this can be traced to where—and how—we live, and that by rethinking and reinvesting in our own communities, we can rediscover the joy of connected, meaningful lives for ourselves and future generations. Nygren's work has earned him the Global Wellness Institute's Leader in Innovation Award and Southface's Argon Award as well as recognition from the Urban Land Institute and the Atlanta Regional Commission. He was also named Georgia Trend's 2019 Most Respected Business Leader and the MLK Jr. Beloved Community Environmental Justice Award in 2025. Nygren currently serves on multiple local and national boards dealing with children, agriculture and environmental issues, including The Ray C. Anderson Foundation, Children & Nature Network, Chattahoochee Now and The Biophilic Institute. He is also a partner at Nygren Placemaking consulting and started his career as a serial hospitality entrepreneur, having founded the 34-restaurant group, Peasant Restaurants. For Long Island, New York-based entrepreneurial brothers Howard and Steven Silverstein, a fueling issue during a day on the water led to an a-ha moment that inspired an invention: the CLiX. Designed to prevent fuel spills, wasted gas and messy cleanups, the CLiX is a one-click spill prevention system for gasoline and diesel boats – a $39.95 funnel-shaped secure attachment that keeps every drop of fuel in the boat tank. With its custom-blended, biodegradable rubberized material and patent-pending technology, the CLiX is safe for users and the environment, helping boaters fuel up without the fuel ever overflowing onto the vessel or into the water.“I remember when my brother, Steven, asked me to come out on his boat for a day on the water. We had never been to the boat and were very excited about it. When we got there, it turned out that Steven had not been able to fuel it up that day as he normally would for company,” Howard said about the March 2024 outing at the Huntington Yacht Club in New York. “So, there I was, standing with him on the fuel dock while he fueled his boat up. He was calling out to his wife about the fuel level, and she was calling back. It was obvious that this was not like filling a car. It was stressful. I did not know that filling a boat was this difficult.” Steven explained the fueling dilemma to Howard, who examined the problem and instantly came up with a solution. “I sketched it out, and the unit you see now looks almost exactly like what I drew that day,” Howard said. Because Steven's fueling problem was not unique to him, Howard knew he was on to something marketable with his invention. In October 2024, the CLiX officially launched at the IBEX show in Tampa, Florida. The positive feedback has been due, in part, to the fact that there is no other product on the market that does what the CLiX does. “It keeps the fuel in the fill tube and tank where it belongs,” Howard said. “It allows the fueling nozzle to activate the same way it does when filling a car, bringing that level of ease and eliminating all the stress of fueling.” The Silversteins are currently working with select marinas for them to sell directly to their customers and for use by staff as they fuel boats. “We have programs where the marinas can act as either affiliates, receiving a commission for every CLiX sold through our site, or as partners where they buy at a reseller price and sell direct to their marina clients,” Howard said. They are also working on sponsoring programs at marinas. The pair has brought on new partner Greg Friedman to assist with these initiatives. “The programs are focused on the environmental impact of boating and what we all can do to help,” Howard saidT he Silversteins pointed to how marinas can benefit from utilizing the CLiX. “Few spills to clean up means less reporting and less possibility of code violations,” Howard said. “By acting as good stewards of the water around their docks, they keep it free of fuel, creating a healthy environment for the marine life, which marina owners and boaters care so much about." The CLiX won a coveted Innovation Award for 2024 at the IBEX show, and it was also featured at the New York Boat Show and the Miami Boat Show. Garnering these accolades has been a professional coup for the Silversteins, who have both thrived in various business positions throughout their careers. Howard is already working on several other innovative ideas that may continue to help boaters have tranquil experiences on the water.
In recent years, the healthcare landscape has witnessed remarkable advancements in technology, particularly in the realm of medical devices and drug delivery systems. One of the most exciting developments is the emergence of needle-free injection technology, a solution that promises to revolutionize how medications are administered. This innovation addresses not only the discomfort and fear associated with needles but also the environmental impact of traditional injection methods. Lea Milovich, CEO and Co-Founder of FlowBeams, explains that the potential for needle-free injections to improve patient experience and reduce waste is significant. The Problem with Traditional InjectionsThe statistics surrounding the use of needles are staggering. Approximately one in five individuals worldwide harbors a fear of needles, a phobia that can deter them from seeking necessary medical treatments, including vaccinations and routine health checks. Furthermore, the sheer volume of needles used daily - over 44 million - contributes to a substantial environmental burden, with syringes, packaging, and other associated waste compounding the issue. This reality underscores the urgent need for an alternative method of drug delivery that minimizes both psychological barriers and ecological impact. The Solution: FlowBeams' Needle-Free TechnologyFlowBeams is at the forefront of this innovative solution, developing a needle-free injection device that utilizes laser-based technology to deliver medications without the use of traditional needles. The device operates by creating a bubble through localized heating of the liquid medication, which then propels the liquid through the skin at high velocities. This method is applicable to a wide range of substances, from cosmetic treatments like Botox to essential pharmaceuticals, including insulin and vaccines. One of the most compelling aspects of FlowBeams' technology is its versatility. The device can accommodate both refillable and disposable tanks, allowing for customization based on the needs of various industries. This adaptability ensures that the technology can be implemented across multiple sectors, catering to both cosmetic and medical applications.Addressing Broader Health ConcernsThe implications of needle-free injection technology extend beyond merely alleviating the fear of needles. For individuals requiring regular injections, such as those with diabetes or fertility issues, the ability to administer medications painlessly and conveniently can significantly enhance their quality of life. The technology has the potential to eliminate barriers that prevent people from adhering to their treatment regimens, ultimately leading to better health outcomes. Moreover, while the current focus of FlowBeams is on intradermal injections, the foundation laid by this technology may pave the way for future innovations in drug delivery. As research continues to evolve, the possibilities for expanding the applications of needle-free injections are vast, potentially addressing a broader spectrum of medical needs. The Future of Healthcare DeliveryLooking ahead, the vision for needle-free injection technology is one of accessibility and safety. Lea Milovich envisions a future where injections are no longer synonymous with pain and anxiety, but rather a seamless part of healthcare that prioritizes patient comfort. The success of this technology hinges on collaboration with industry partners who can help bring these innovations to market, ensuring that they reach the individuals who need them most. The recognition that FlowBeams received at CES 2025 with an Innovation Award in the beauty and personal care category underscores the growing interest and validation of this technology. As more stakeholders recognize the importance of needle-free solutions, the pathway to widespread adoption becomes clearer. Conclusion: Preventing Fear and Waste in HealthcareThe development of needle-free injection technology represents a significant leap forward in medical innovation, addressing both the psychological and environmental challenges posed by traditional injection methods. As companies like FlowBeams work to refine and promote this technology, the prospect of a needle-free future becomes increasingly attainable. By prioritizing patient comfort and environmental sustainability, needle-free injections have the potential to transform healthcare delivery for all, making it safer, more accessible, and ultimately more humane. In a world where health should be a priority, the ability to administer medications without the fear of needles is not just a technological advancement; it is a meaningful step towards a more inclusive and compassionate healthcare system.Interview by Scott Ertz of F5 Live: Refreshing Technology.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy.
