Everyone has heard of Leonard Cohen, but not so many know much about him. With this episode, we look to give you a taste of Mr Cohen – his views on life, women and songwriting; his extraordinary influence on modern songwriting; his legacy, and, of course, “Hallelujah”! A world that never had Leonard Cohen in it would be a much lesser place indeed. Jeff gives us his holiday report on a visit to the only Museum in the world dedicated to penises, whose prime exhibit is a plaster cast of Jimi Hendrix' tackle. (It's true!!) We give an update on our Ed Kuepper episode, with a report on his live concert in Sydney in September, which was fantastic! We take a quick look at a few of the icons we've lost so far this year including Tom Verlaine (Television), Burt Bacharach, Andy Rourke (The Smiths), Francis Monkman (Sky, 801), and Sinead O'Connor. In honour of Sinead, our Album You Must Hear Before You Die is her “I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got” (1990), which we both agree is an absolute cracker of an album. Haven't heard it? Haar opvolg album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, wat Nothing Compares 2 U ingesluit het, het haar internasionaal roem verwerf. Daar was op ‘n stadium ‘n verbod op haar musiek as gevolg van haar siening van die Katolieke Kerk en sy het self gesê sy is moeilik.

Enjoy An Album with Liam Withnail & Christopher Macarthur-Boyd
Her powerful cover of Prince's “Nothing Compares 2 U” made her a global superstar, but when Sinead O'Connor tore up a picture of The Pope during a musical performance on Saturday Night Live as a statement about child abuse within the Catholic Church, she became infamous. Abused by her family and by the nuns at the Magdelene Laundry she was sent to for shoplifting, she channeled the rage wrought by her tragic upbringing into a career of genre-pushing art that seamlessly melds the personal and political to great commercial and critical success. I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, released in 1990, is undoubtedly the epoch and apex of that acclaim. It's also the 457th Greatest Album of All Time, according to Rolling Stone magazine. This week, Christopher Macarthur-Boyd and Liam Withnail did a deep dive on it, and now they're going to talk about it. Featured topics include: Irish passports, Joe Pesci, Frank Sinatra, Madonna, In Tua Nua, Ton Ton Macoute, U2, Bob Dylan's 30th Anniversary Tribute Concert at Madison Square Garden, and “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus. All that, plus Secret Posho, as well as the first edition of brand new segment “Tattoo Woohoo or Tattoo Boohoo?” on this week's episode of Enjoy An Album. Enjoy!

Vinyl LP Records: The history - - A phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English), often simply called a record, was an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc. Because the records were made of polyvinyl chloride they took on the name “VINYL”. In the mid-2000s, gradually, records made of any material began to be called vinyl records, or simply vinyl. The phonograph disc record was the primary medium used for music reproduction throughout the 20th century. - - - The details - - The LP record (from "long playing" or "long play") is a phonograph record format characterized by a speed of 33 1⁄3 rpm, having a 12- or 10-inch (30- or 25-cm) diameter, and uses the "microgroove" groove specification. Introduced by Columbia in 1948, it was soon adopted as a new standard by the entire record industry. The new product was a 12- or 10-inch (30 or 25 cm) fine-grooved disc made of PVC ("vinyl") and played with a smaller-tipped "microgroove" stylus at a speed of 33 1⁄3 rpm. Each side of a 12-inch LP could play for about 22 minutes. The average LP has about 1,500 feet (460 m; 0.28 mi) of groove on each side. The average tangential needle speed relative to the disc surface is approximately 1 mile per hour (1.6 km/h; 0.45 m/s). It travels fastest on the outside edge. - - - It is one, long, groove filled with music. But, in reality, it is “Just A Groove”, an album oriented groove. Enjoy. No more time for silliness! The Immortals have some important reviews on their docket including the beloved sci-fi classic Blade Runner and the beloved sci-fi classic LOST. Also an early album by Sinead O'Connor, absent food, a poppy song by The Cure and an underread story by Philip Pullman. But the biggest question of all is...will anybody get Austin a chair?
