King Crimson emerged from the UK in the late 60's with their debut album In The Court of the Crimson King, viewed by many as a prog rock masterpiece. However, right after the album was released, we saw the first of many defections from the band. Over half a century, some of the most proficient musicians on the planet have played with King Crimson, led all the while by the mercurial Robert Fripp. To capture the spirit of the band and to endeavor to find answers as to why there has been so much turnover of band members (19 total members over the years), director Toby Amies (The Man Whose Mind Exploded) took on the task of getting to know the band members during what might just be their final tour. With stints in radio, record labels and MTV on both sides of the pond, Toby Amies has had a fascinating career. He took on the challenge of learning the ins and outs of the members of the band, why they choose to play in King Crimson and what is Robert Fripp's role in guiding this band for over half a century. While Robert will tell the reason for infighting and defections don't lie with him, Toby gets the stories of all the surviving members of King Crimson, current and former, to investigate what makes this band what it is. Not everyone gets King Crimson and their blend of rock, jazz, classical and experimental muisc but once they do, they are hooked true-believers. Toby endeavors to find out why and delivers a compelling film full of human drama, emotion, heartbreak, humor and music. Born in 1962 in Disneyworld territory, Orlando, Florida, Wesley Trent Snipes grew up on the mean streets of the Bronx, before shuttling back to Florida as a teen and then doing college out in California. After some awkward beginnings as a drug dealer in Miami Vice and the heavy in a Michael Jackson video (and losing out on a pair of high profile opportunities to the likes of LeVar Burton and Tymak), Snipes broke out in a brief but notable run of New Jack gangsta films for the likes of Mario Van Peebles and Spike Lee before making a name with smash hits like White Men Can't Jump and an unexpected turn in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar...while simultaneously pumping out a surprising number of no budget direct to video affairs of varying quality. With a wide ranging background in martial arts and a side hustle providing bodyguard muscle for celebs, he found a new career in high profile action films like Passenger 57, Rising Sun, Demolition Man and the Blade series...before running into a number of headline baiting legal troubles which resulted in a three year incarceration. Since then, he's been making a return to notable film roles with a very central character in the latest entry in Stallone's all-star Expendables series and Eddie Murphy's long overdue return to form, Coming 2 America. Could Snipes, like a good fighter who's taken a few hard knocks, find himself on the upswing once again? Join us as we take on the rollercoaster career of the one and only Wesley Snipes! Greetings! Welcome to another "short on time" show featuring longer pieces from a number of newer releases. During my long weekend trip to visit friends and family in Connecticut, I had the opportunity to see Toby Amies' documentary, "In The Court of the Crimson King: King Crimson at 50". Even if you're not a King Crimson or a progressive rock fan, the film is quite engaging, both funny and moving. Well worth checking out. In addition, on the way back I was able to make my seasonal winter stop at the Princeton Record Exchange and loaded up on goodies to be shared on upcoming programs. Enjoy the show and be sure to check out older programs you might have missed!

The fashionable and decorous men whom we recognize in portraits and letters from the Italian Renaissance penned some of the most scathing critiques of the courts in which they served. Such anti-courtly discourse furnished a platform for discussing pressing questions of early modern Italian society. The court was the space that witnessed a new form of negotiation of identity and prestige, the definition of masculinity and of gender-specific roles, the birth of modern politics and of an ethics based on merit and on individual self-interest. In The Court and Its Critics: Anti-Court Sentiments in Early Modern Italy (University of Toronto Press, 2020), Paola Ugolini analyzes anti-courtly critiques using a wide variety of sources including manuals of courtliness, dialogues, satires, and plays, from the mid-fifteenth to the early seventeenth century. The book is the first work of its kind, as it systematically investigates anti-court sentiments across an impressive number of primary sources. At its core, the book reimagines the agency of authors who served in roles they often despised, and it prompts questions of the psychological effect of transforming the self in order to please those in power. An elegantly written study, The Court and Its Critics will be of interest to scholars of the early modern period as well as to those who are curious about the fraught history of the development of the self. Gerry Milligan is Professor of Italian at the College of Staten Island, where he serves as Director of Honors. He is Professor in Italian and Global Early Modern Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center. This is episode five of Prog Notes! This episode we listen and talk about progressive rock milestone, In The Court of The Crimson King by King Crimson. Join our community! www.prognotespodcast.com/communitysignup Follow us on Instagram! www.instagram.com/prog_notes **Prog Notes is a podcast dedicated to the genre of progressive rock. Each episode Destin and Drew tackle an album and delve into the different musical compositions, lyrics, and concepts that make it prog rock. They discuss the history of the genre as well as its relevance in modern music. With each new episode, these two colorful characters demonstrate their passion by attempting to inspire more people to investigate this unique, sometimes forgotten genre of music and find an album or band they can enjoy.
D Sharpe of End-Time Illusion, Priest of Set, and Fellow Surfer comes on the show to discuss the Left-Hand Path, Lunar Magic, and the power of music; then rocks us out with the ETI song In The Court of the Pharaoh. It is a momentous moment.
Two Bullseye favorites from the archives this week. First: Terry Crews. A linebacker from Flint Michigan, Terry was picked by the LA Rams in the 11th round of the 1991 NFL Draft. In 1996, he played his last season ever for the Eagles. Then he took up acting - he starred alongside Ice Cube in the Friday After Next, played Chris Rock's Dad on Everybody Hates Chris. Now he plays Sergeant Jeffords on Brooklyn Nine Nine. Lately he's been in the news for taking speaking out against sexual harassment of all kinds - he says he was a victim himself. Then, Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham, from 2014. The two co-created and starred in the show Playing House on USA, a favorite of ours here. It just wrapped up its third and final season last year. Male friendship is well represented in comedy, really, really well represented, but female friendship - not so much. And when we do see female friendships, the characters are sort of rote - there's always the same 3 or 4 characters, you know? On Playing House, Parham and St. Clair framed it differently. Their characters are less Carrie and Miranda and more Laverne and Shirley. You can actually imagine them being friends. Plus, calling all prog rock fans! This week Marc Weingarten and Tyson Cornell, the editors of the prog rock anthology Yes Is The Answer: (And Other Prog Rock Tales), explain why the King Crimson album In The Court of the Crimson King is a classic, and how it laid the foundation for a whole genre.
Every time I think about the varieties of sound that are conveyed by 16 bits at 44.1KHz it boggles my imagination. So many bits, so many possibilities. One moment it can play brutal death metal, the next a brief punk song, and then smooth sludge metal. It can encompass guitars, drums, organs, voices; you name it - it can do it with incredible fidelity. We have a great show of amazing Creative Commons metal lined up for you. We have tracks by Deadeye Dick, VULTURYON, Colorblind, Enuma Elish, Phantom Elite, Heavy Temple, Blank Spell, and the crushing Hammond Organ of Mount Atlas.
