Headlines and JAY BUHNER joins the show. The Mariners are on a tear, so we ask Bone for his thoughts on what this team is doing and how they're doing it. Plus- Bret Boone took over as the Rangers hitting coach, and we get Buhner's thoughts on the new gig for The Boone. :30- The Celtics find themselves in an 0-2 hole, but they have that Championship pedigree, so this isn't over. :45- Does the NCAA need the President to step in?
Mike Lefko, filling in for Brock and Salk this morning, takes a look at the red hot start of Jorge Polanco and compares the overall perception of him right now compared to when he signed back in Seattle over the winter. Then, they re-air their conversation with former Mariner Jay Buhner to discuss his return to the broadcast booth and why he believes the Mariners are off to such a good start.
The hour starts by listening to voicemails from fans for Here's the Thing. Later, Jay Buhner joins the show to discuss the start to the Mariners season, what he feels like is now different with the new coaching staff, him getting back into the broadcast booth and plenty more.
Mariners legend Jay Buhner joins the show to talk about the opening day win. Softy joins to talk about puking on command, reciting the A-team open, and of course the Mariners win. Opening Day traditions.
4pm: Matt Markovich - Spinning the Wheel of Legislative Lunacy // Washington Senate Democrats want to tax the wealthy and large corporations to address budget shortfall // Guest: Listener joins the show to tell his story with opioid addiction, Christian in 360 // Jay Buhner back in the broadcast booth // Sweet speech to Jay Buhner
As a Mariner’s fan, it’s tradition to quibble with offseason moves. But there has been ONE personnel change that the majority of longtime fans are cheering. Not on the field, mind you… but in the Broadcast booth. Angie Mentink is joining a roster of former players providing color commentary during TV broadcasts, becoming the first woman in Mariners history to have this regular gig. There’s been lots of shifting around on the broadcast side for the M’s: Longtime voice of the Mariners Dave Sims left us for the Yankees, (just like Ichiro, THE PAIN,) so Aaron Goldsmith will take over the main play-by-play position. And joining Angie as analysts are, Mariner Hall of Famer Jay Buhner, former catcher Dave Valle, and former pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith. Angie Mentink is one of the first women to play professional baseball, in addition to being a hall of fame UW softball player. She’s been a member of the organization for nearly 30 years and is making history as the first permanent female analyst in the booth for the M’s. After talking to Jay Buhner, Salk is even more convinced that the M's will be taking a very old school approach this season and he's interested but also a bit concerned to see how it goes. Then, we discuss Canada's win in the Four Nations Final, the M's first spring league game today and John Schneider's comments on finding O-line talent in Need to Know. Plus, we take your calls as we do every Friday.
With a few Mariners telling Daniel Kramer of MLB.com that they were paying attention to the Mariners offseason, Salk breaks down what it all means. Later, they welcome on Jay Buhner to discuss him being added to the Mariners broadcast team along with what he's taken away so far at Spring Training. In Blue 88, topics include a Mel Kiper take that Brock doesn't like, one of the most enticing free agents for the Seahawks, and the most interesting sound that he heard from the John Schneider Show yesterday.

Mariners legend and all-around great guy Jay Buhner joins the Sims family for a look back on his storied career and insights on today's game. Jay shares his earliest memories, reflecting on the lessons of unity and accountability he learned in Little League that shaped his journey to becoming one of Major League Baseball's fiercest competitors. He recounts his path from being drafted by the Pirates, to his first big league moments with the Yankees, and the infamous trade that sent him to Seattle, where he became one of the greatest Mariners of all time. Jay dives into what made those Mariners teams unforgettable, his close bond with Ken Griffey Jr., and hints at why fans might see more of him around Dan Wilson's Mariners in 2025 and beyond.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Yankees acquire the veteran first baseman/DH for promising outfield prospect Jay Buhner. Phelps will remain with the Yankees for parts of only two seasons, while Buhner will emerge as a star, reaching the 40-home run mark in 1995, '96, and '97. Even Seinfeld questioned this trade . . . July 21, 1970, San Diego Padres manager Preston Gomez lifts starter Clay Kirby for a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning, even though the right-hander has a no-hitter in progress. With the Padres trailing 1-0, Gomez decides to play for the win instead of letting Kirby finish. The Padres eventually lose both the game and the no-hitter. Gomez would repeat the mistake in 1974 as well. July 21, 1969, Major League Baseball celebrates the national pastime's centennial anniversary with a gala banquet at the All-Star Game. In this Episode of Sports the NEMO Way we bring the best Mariners of all time to the table for discussion.
What’s Trending: The United States Supreme Court issued a ruling today that rescinded a Trump-era ban on bump stocks. Mariners fans shaved their heads for free tickets on Jay Buhner buzzcut night. A man fled Centralia police in a stolen kayak. // News Nation host Leland Vittert called out CNN for their misleading coverage of the latest FBI crime statistics. Another wave of antisemitism in New York. // Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson justified his exorbitant spending on hair and makeup by playing the race card. Democrats are attacking Donald Trump for comments on Milwaukee that he never actually said.
Bob and Dave are joined by Jay Buhner live at Hatback Bar and Grille to look back on his time with the team and to celebrate the return of Buhner Buzz Night, they look at some of the Mariners prospects that could be used for trade pieces at the deadline, they look at the cause of the offensive struggles all over the MLB, and they hear what Seahawks Head Coach Mike Macdonald had to say about Devon Witherspoon and the defense.
Salk asks Brock the same question his young daughter asked last night: “why are baseball games so stressful?” Why did they win that game? Why do they look so different late in games? Former Mariner and friend of the show Jay Buhner joins the guys to share what he remembers from the first Buzz Cut night, what he makes of this team, Julio compared to Junior and so much more.
The Jay Buhner conversation ran late, pushing Brock's Blue 88 into the next hour and covering a potential QB conversation for the Seahawks and mandatory mini-camp headlines. Jeff Passan joins the guys for his weekly segment to discuss Luis Robert Jr and who (and why) he sees as untouchable trade pieces for the Mariners this year.
Headlines and Jay Buhner. The Bone stops by to chat about this Mariners team and last night's comeback. It's always fun to hear Bucky reunite with his old teammates and Buhner is one of the best! :30- The Yankees care about winning on every level, but not all organizations operate that way, only valuing wins at the Major league level. How can you expect Major leaguers to have the fire to win if it's not engrained in them from the jump? :45- Jamal Adams is visiting an NFL team today and it's not us! Phew! Ota's are underway this week and all eyes will be on Mike MacDonald's pass rush.
Cell Mates! And we chat with Mariners Legend JAY BUHNER!
Gabe Speier joins the show as Spring Training coverage continues. The guys wrap up a Fox 13 TV hit and then Chuck double disappoints people. He teased that the Bone was coming on, but he's not, neither one; not Jay Buhner or Perry Hill. We wrap up Day 1 at Spring Training with One Last Thing

Now listeners you KNOW we are all rooting for the Seattle Mariners to harness the sun-like energy of the sport's Number One Ranked Farm System, blast their way to the AL West title , and then supernova all over whichever pitiful wretches the National League sends forth to face then. …BUT, the Mariners are instead 2-3, with a three-game losing streak in tow. It's only five games and there is LITERALLY NOTHING TO BE LEARNED, but the content must flow. And, once more, we pod. Not long after a stoppage in play, baseball needed a lift. But we aren't talking about 2022 here. Oh no, instead, it's 1996 – the first full season after the 1994-95 strike – we have in mind for the latest episode of ‘The Box Score Show' with a particular focus on the anticipation of Seattle's Opening Day and the ultimate letdown of the season that followed. It might not sound like the most likeliest of picks for a game to look back on, but bear with Kevin Chroust and Chris de Salvo as they journey back into an era when Randy Johnson toed the mound for the offensively prolific Mariners, and Frank Thomas was driving in runs for a White Sox team still getting over what could have been in '94. A shortstop sensation by the name of Alex Rodriguez was still proving himself and hit ninth on this opening day, while Ken Griffey Jr. was in the prime of Seattle primes. And Frank Costanza would not be thrilled if we forgot to mention Jay Buhner. You can subscribe to all the podcasts from The Analyst on your favorite podcast applications now to ensure you don't miss an episode. And don't forget to rate and review the shows while you're there.
In this episode Mad Dog is digging up the story of one of the greatest baseball teams to never win the world series, the 2001 Seattle Mariners. Led by rookie Ichiro Suzuki's MVP season, the Mariners would tie the major league record for wins with 116 victories. Their roster consisted of eight All-Stars including John Olerdu, Brett Boone, Edgar Martinez and Freddy Garcia. Their domination throughout the regular season was evident but when the playoffs came around their skills would be tested when they found themselves facing off against Derek Jeter and the New Yankees dynasty. Mariners manger Lou Piniella (28:27) joins Mad Dog to give more detail and insight into his 2001 squad.

We discussed Jon Miller and Dave Niehaus as announcers; the Mariners trend over the last few decades; Sam's first memories at the King Dome; Jay Buhner's impact on the team and the turf; the Mariners' amazing 1995 run to the playoffs; Sam's admiration for Hall of Fame DH Edgar Martinez; the impact of Ichiro's signing in 2001 on the franchise; the promise of the 2002 season before Moneyball happened; the promise of the Mariners' prospects and GM Jerry Dipoto's vision for the franchise; how the evolution of baseball toward the home run, strikeout, and walk has created market inefficiencies for certain skill sets and made it difficult to watch in its current state; Sam's outlook on the Mariners for the current season; how COVID will affect the validity of this season; how a society that is fully functioning is the one that deserves sports; named Kyle Lewis and Jered Kelenic as feared players for Giants' fans in their 4 games vs. the Mariners; Sam names which prospects he expects to get MLB appearances this year out of the great crop of youngsters in the organization; Sam's analysis of Dipoto's view on pitchers and how Logan Gilbert and George Kirby fit that mold; how pitchers' strength could be built up as the season goes on, and famous creative uses of pitchers in postseason situations; some fun baseball stories of the recent past; some memories of our classmate Patrick Wisdom; and finally a hope for the future of baseball in Seattle. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
