Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, David was adopted as an infant, by a first generation Mexican-American family. He enlisted into the U.S. Air Force after High School and spent his entire tour at Torrejon Air Base in Madrid Spain in Medical Administration. After his military service, he began his career in Marketing and Advertising with BBDO (Batton,Barton,Durnstien&Osborne) Ad Agency in San Francisco, CA with full focus on the Apple Computer campaign for MacIntosh. The experience he gained, lead to his Professional careers in Radio and TV, Software Sales, Medical Marketing and Real Estate. His Spiritual awakening began at 22, after a near-death experience from a severe motorcycle accident. Struggling to accept his religious upbringing as a fundamentalist Christian, versus, hiding his true personal spiritual experience and his love of the ancient metaphysical sciences, at 33, personal integrity was glaring. Being a preacher's kid, choosing his own way vs. his family and tradition was the “road to hell” in their beliefs. He finally asked himself which one felt like hell. As he quotes “to thine own self, be true.”At the end of his first year, emotionally and physically sober, reading and learning spiritual philosophies from Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Richard Bach, James Redfield and Neale Donald Walsch, David was given a re-occurring dream that lead him on a spiritual journey of discovery. The illumination and connection with Spirit took place atop the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico outside Santa Fe. The experience with Spirit was extremely profound and life changing. David re-located to Albuquerque for a 10 month sabbatical of spiritual exploration. “When the student is ready. . . the teacher appears.”Returning back to San Antonio with this new knowledge and spiritual understanding, he began his spiritual career working with others involved in a 12-step recovery program. A place where the sheer number of readings involved, kept him in the books studying happily. A friend of Bill W. and an active member of his work, the experience caused David to excel as an Intuitive Reader, and metaphysical Teacher. Since 1998 David has pursued his passion as a Professional Astrologer, Numerologist and a Master of Tarot.

This month marks the ten-year anniversary of the 2011 Las Conchas Fire, which burned 156,000 acres of the Jemez Mountains. At the time, Las Conchas was the largest fire in New Mexico's recorded history. Here in New Mexico—and across the West—wildfire season is getting longer. Wildfires, bigger. And these trends will continue in our warming world. Between 1970 and 2020, New Mexico's average annual temperature has risen by 3.4 degrees Fahrenheit—and forecasts show we're in for more and more warming into the future. But wildfires aren't the only problem spurred by rising temperatures and drought, which have even more impacts on our forests, including insect infestations. On this month's episode of Our Land, we look at how climate change is altering New Mexico's forests and what the future holds. A 30-year veteran of the battle for affordable housing, Mike Loftin of Homewise talks with senior producer Matt Grubs about the ABQ Home for Life program. The effort by the city to attract new residents was born of work-from-home discoveries about the workforce. Loftin explains why it's important to think holistically about housing costs. This week, our crew also takes a trip to the Santa Fe Farmers Market to find out how growers are emerging from the pandemic. The shutdown's impact has forced changes in how some growers do business, including innovations that seem here to stay in a post-pandemic world.

As part of her ongoing effort to encourage young athletes, she founded a children’s trail running club, gives motivational talks, and coaches girls’ lacrosse in Santa Fe. In 2019, she published her first memoir, Running Home (Random House), chronicling her "accidental" discovery of ultra running as a way to process grief during her father's terminal diagnosis and death, while also navigating new motherhood, a health anxiety diagnosis, and working as a writer and editor at one of the outdoor industry's most well-respected magazines, Outside. Questions we ask Katie include: How did you get your start in running -- and how did this end up leading you to trail/ultra running, including becoming the 2018 Leadville Champion? "Running Home" - discuss how and why she wrote the book -- from father’s terminal illness and death to motherhood, anxiety, and more. For listeners who have not yet read it, what makes this unique from the normal running novel? In your book, you use running as a metaphor, muse, and path for many things, including: family, parenting, grief, losing yourself, finding yourself, and so much more. What has been one of the most prominent correlations you've seen between running and/or your own life? What lessons did you learn throughout the process of writing a book and more specifically, a memoir? Any advice for an aspiring author? What are a few of your all-time favorite places to run? What advice would you give your younger self? What does being a Strong Runner Chick mean to you? 62: The 100-miler: Part 9 (1961-1968)

Ultrarunning History

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 19, 2020 33:04

By Davy Crockett  During the 1960s, formal 100-mile races took a backseat to the shorter ultrarunning distances that were starting to draw talented runners into the sport from marathon running. The 50-mile distance was on ultrarunning centerstage as London to Brighton emerged as the premier world ultrarunning race along with Comrades Marathon, competed in South Africa. In New York City, Ted Corbitt started to organize ultradistance races with an eye to qualify runners for London to Brighton. In 1967 the first American 50-mile National Championship was held in Poughkeepsie, New York. Ultrarunning was growing again. In America, a 50-mile craze took place by the general public in 1963 due to comments made by President John F. Kennedy (see episode 4) and some bold individuals proved they could do a double: 100 miles. 100-mile races were waiting to the wings to being competed seriously again. However, the 100-mile distance on foot fascinated the general public, especially men in the military. Many people in all walks of life found ways during the 1960s to achieve it. For the first time, Death Valley became a harsh target location for athletes that are now long-forgotten to prove they could overcome suffering and cover 100 miles during intense summer heat. These attempts received national attention and also frustrated Death Valley Monument rangers. But they would lay the foundational idea of what eventually became the Badwater Ultramarathon. Operation Wingfoot 100-miler 100-mile marches continued in the military. In September 1961 a 48-hour 100-mile endurance march was held in Delaware put on by the Delaware Nation Guard. It was called Operation Wingfoot. The route was from the Wilmington Airport to Indian River Inlet. Lt. Colonel William Paul Joseph Drakeley Jr. (1916-1997), Marine Corps Reserve officer in charge of the Guard’s physical fitness program explained, “This grueling march is open to those volunteers who think they are tough enough to keep up with Castro’s guerillas.” Colonel Drakeley Drakeley got the idea a few months earlier when a peace march went through Delaware. He first conducted a 70-miler with another man to contrast the march “by the pacifists.” He said, “I admire those peace marchers, but they’re living in a dream world. We’ve got to learn how to survive in this world and one way for Americans to survive is to be physically fit and prepared.” Those who signed up for the 100-miler had to have previously accomplished a 15-mile hike. Forty-six men started. The 100-milers wore uniforms, a soft cap, and carried a light marching pack with a helmet attached. Other equipment included a poncho, cartridge belt, canteen, and carbine. Each man was required to bring four extra pair of socks. Indian River Inlet (the finish) The first man that fell out received an award of a blister kit and a crying towel. Those who reached 50 miles received a State of Delaware Medal. Ten reached as far as 75 miles. It was reported, “The hikers rested a total of 13 hours and consumed liquids mostly for nourishment. They had one C ration meal” Most of those who failed to finish had bad blisters or were affected by the heat of the day. “Some men who fell out were treated by a traveling field hospital and returned to action. Despite the rest periods no one slept well. The most any marcher got was four hours of sleep.” Many spectators cheered them on along the way and motorists kept stopping to offer rides which were declined. Six men finished the 100 miles with a time of  48.5 hours. They included four military men and two civilians. Col. Drakeley was  among the finishers. They were all awarded the Medal of Military Merit. Cat and Mouse 100-miler In June 1961, A group of eleven Marine Corps reservists participated in a “cat and mouse” 100-mile trek in New Mexico to see if they could go from the Jemez Mountains to Albuquerque undetected by the public. It was reported,

Being a preacher’s kid, choosing his own way vs. his family and tradition was the “road to hell” in their beliefs.
