FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye - Healthy Leadership for Life and Ministry
As pastors and ministry leaders, how can understanding our own journeys better ensure that we are serving from a place of healing rather than exhaustion, burnout, or pain? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Bethany Dearborn Hiser. Bethany is the Director of Soul Care for Northwest Family Life. She's a bilingual social worker, chaplain, and pastoral advocate who has served in a variety of ministry and social service settings. Her new book is entitled From Burned Out to Beloved: Soul Care for Wounded Healers. Together, Bethany and Jason examine the often overlooked impact on our own lives that comes as a result of exposure to the crises and difficulties of those we serve. Bethany shares insights on how we can care for our own souls to help us avoid or overcome burnout and be more effective in our ministry.Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more, at http://PastorServe.org/networkSome key takeaways from this conversation:Bethany Dearborn Hiser on the importance of self-care and personal growth in achieving success: "Taking care of yourself and doing inner work is part of the job."Bethany Dearborn Hiser on the danger of tying our sense of identity and self-worth to external factors like our work, achievements, or the opinions of others: "If we put our identity in what we do, then our worth depends on the people that we're working with, or how successful we are in our work."Bethany Dearborn Hiser on the significance of companionship and support for pastors in their spiritual journey and ministry: "It's such a lonely position sometimes for pastors…. You really need a companion in this, and there's nothing wrong with that. Jesus invited and had companions in his ministry."----------------Looking to dig more deeply into this topic and conversation? FrontStage BackStage is much more than another church leadership show, it is a complete resource to help you and your ministry leaders grow. Every week we go the extra mile and create a free toolkit so you and your ministry team can dive deeper into the topic that is discussed.Visit http://PastorServe.org/network to find the Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide. The archetype of the “Wounded Healer” from Carl Jung refers to those who have developed an immense amount of empathy through fighting their own vulnerabilities and struggles, and have a deep desire to assist others in their journey. They are armed with the wisdom from their experience as well as that of others. Wounded Healers strive to help us circumnavigate obstacles with the integration of shadow work while developing an authentic love for self and others. However, this way of being presents a certain paradox in the life of the wounded healer.
This sermon explores the transformative work of Christ to give us beauty for ashes and bring healing to our woundedness. As Henry Nouwen states: "Nobody escapes being wounded. We are all wounded people, whether physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually. The main question is not 'How can we hide our wounds?' so we don't have to be embarrassed but 'How can we put our woundedness in the service of others?' When our wounds cease to be a source of shame and become a source of healing, we have become wounded healers."
Pastor Joel Conti shared this sermon at Northside Foursquare Church in Coquitlam, BC. https://nsfc.ca

Fr. Brendan McGuire - Podcasts that Break open the Word of God
We often name the gospel from this Sunday as “Doubting Thomas." One of the things that has always struck me about this particular gospel passage is that Jesus has now risen from the dead, glorious victory over death and he has wounds. Why does he have wounds? Is this what it will be like when we all are raised? We will have all our wounds or broken legs, and our bad hips. We will all have the same old things we had when we were living. (Read more…)Here is my homily from the Second Sunday of Easter . Please feel free to share with others.Alleluia He is Risen !
Pastor Doug shares from the Gospel of John today. Peter's example is extraordinary as even after his denial of Jesus Peter was restored and did great things for the Kingdom of God and so can you.

In this episode of Vital Psychedelic Conversations, Johanna interviews Angie Leek, LMFT/LPC-S, SEP: Vital instructor, Founder of the Holos Foundation for Transpersonal Healing, and psychotherapist offering KAP through her private practice, Holos Counseling; and Justin LaPree: Vital graduate, decorated Marine, former firefighter, and Founder and President of Heroic Path to Light; a retreat center in Austin, Texas offering psychedelic-assisted therapy and community to veterans, first responders, and Gold/White Star families. LaPree shares his personal journey of struggling to reintegrate into life after war and the daily traumas he lived as a firefighter leading to an eventual suicide attempt, and the healing he found when he rediscovered the community and purpose he had been longing for. And Leek tells her story of her spiritual emergency and the nonlinear path she found for coming to terms with her repressed trauma, further illustrating a common theme we see in this space of the wounded healer, and the challenge of taking care of yourself first in order to be able to heal others. They discuss the importance of specialized communities for trauma healing; the need for a support system and the power of sharing experiences with others; how they both work with their clients, the idea of viewing preparation as “pre-integration”; why families and friends also need to be prepared; and how, if you feel like something needs to change or you're in need of a community, maybe it all begins with you. They also talk about how much they loved Vital and the impact it's had on their life paths. The deadline for applications for the 2024 cohort of Vital is tomorrow, December 20, at midnight, so if you're ready to take the leap, head to vitalpsychedelictraining.com to apply now! Teacher: Charles Kiser Many people leave churches and faith because they have experienced spiritual abuse and trauma due to toxic religious narratives. In this session we explore the concepts of spiritual abuse and religious trauma, and present pastoral leadership practices and postures that foster congregations that are healing for the spiritually traumatized.

In this episode, Jamie introduces a Christian grounding technique he and Kent developed for the Spiritual First Aid certificate course, Grounded in Grace: The 5-4-3-2-1 Technique. The technique is designed to help manage stress and anxiety by directing our attention to the present moment through our five senses. Because it incorporates prayer and visualization, this practice can strengthen our faith and deepen our connection to God. As Jamie notes, it's vital for helpers to take care of themselves because “there's no Spiritual First Aid without self-aid.” We pray this episode encourages you as you encourage others. In this episode, Jamie dives into the unholy trinity of burnout: burnout itself, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma. This trio is familiar to many in helping professions, ministry positions, or volunteer roles. Understanding their definitions and root causes is essential for preventing—and overcoming—each of them. As Christian helpers, we can't ignore these issues. Instead, we must prioritize our well-being to serve others more effectively and model healthier life rhythms. Together as the Church, we have a unique opportunity to tackle this unholy trinity of burnout head-on and help people find the support they need to lead well and “do good, better” from a place of rest. One of the things Jamie and Kent have learned over the years is that “doing good, better” is demanding emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually. It's quite common for helpers to feel a high level of stress, and they may eventually succumb to compassion fatigue or even burnout. As we transition out of both a Mars and Mercury Retrograde this month, I'm looking forward to having a better relationship with my body. Sometimes I overwork myself. Sometimes I, unfortunately, punish my body by consuming things I don't think really suit it. Sometimes I push my body past its limits. So this year, my intention is I want to listen more to what my body is asking for. I'm also looking forward to taking Foundations in Somatic Abolitionism with Resmaa Menakem with my colleagues and past podcast guests Rayell Grayson and Sarah Suzuki. Happy anniversary! You and I have gone through a lot over the last five years. Progress! Stagnation! Rage! Exhilaration! And, would you believe, 200 conversations with wounded healers? A line-up of humans so generous of spirit that their insights echo throughout my body long after the recording session ends. There's something to this idea of embodied wisdom, the way we physically understand what our minds can't (or refuse to) comprehend. Somatic Experience Practitioner Sarah Wolfman (one of my first guests ever) calls it the power of our bones. So what do these old bones know now? Sarah returns to help me sift through the transformative lessons of the last five years. GUEST BIO Sarah Wolfman is passionate about embodiment as a tool for transformation. Don't Waste Your Gold DustWe Are Each Other's Wounded Healers - Matthew Kelly - Life is Messy InterviewGet Matthew's 60 Second Wisdom delivered to your inbox: https://www.matthewkelly.com/subscribeVideo Transcript:Jack Beers:“Don't waste your gold dust. You know, I love that line. It's the last line of the book don't waste your gold dust. Tell me about what gold dust means.”Matthew Kelly:“Yeah, it's interesting because I, as you know, I rewrote the ending of the book at least a dozen times, and then there's some lines they just cut. There's some lines, they just come, and they come in the middle of the night. You don't know where they come from, and you don't know how they come, and you wish you did, because you'd like to recreate it all over again. That's one of them, don't waste your gold dust. I think it just has this feel to it that is intriguing, that is challenging, that is ... it goes back to the Japanese ceramics. The idea that they mix the gold dust in with the glue when they glued back the vases or the bowls. It's not the glue that makes the ceramics beautiful, it's the gold dust that makes the ceramics beautiful. In the book ... let's see if we can find it. Talks about the idea, this might be a close second to the unrecognized spiritual needs line. The most beautiful and surprising lesson that the Japanese art form of Kintsugi teaches us is this, we are each others wounded healers. We each possess the gold dust needed to glue other people back together, making them more beautiful and more lovable than ever. It is our love, connection, acceptance, generosity, community and kindness that are the gold dust. That's your gold dust. Your goodness is your gold dust. Your ability to love and be generous, be kind and thoughtful, compassionate. That's your gold dust. It is desperately needed by everyone in your life in order for them to be healed, put back together, to become more beautiful and more lovable than ever.To withhold your gold dust is more than a crime. It's a treachery. I think we do sometimes, we withhold our gold dust, and that's tragic. We waste our gold dust. Don't waste your gold dust.”Jack Beers:“If you're watching this on a video, just pause, and just sit with that for a hot second. "Don't waste your gold dust." It's an incredible standard. Maybe it's better to say it's an incredible responsibility, and is there a more important responsibility for me than to be each others wounded healers? That's just...”Matthew Kelly:“Yes, but at the same time, it is a standard and a responsibility that is perfectly matched for you. I think on days when I ger overwhelmed, or I get frazzled and I get stressed, or I get cranky, or whatever, I have to sit back and say, "What is happening here?" The conclusion that I have to come to, is that I am trying to do more in this day, in this 24 hour period, than God intends for me to do.Assess the landscape and work out, which parts of this day are coming from ego, or coming from ambition, or coming from parts of me that are not aligned with God. When we walk with God, we should very rarely be overwhelmed. Usually when we're overwhelmed, when something seems too massive, it's because we're trying to do part of God's job. We should be overwhelmed when we make that mistake.”If you have not read LIFE IS MESSY, order your copy today: https://amzn.to/2TTgZKn Subscribe to Matthew's YouTube Channel today! https://www.youtube.com/c/MatthewKellyAuthor/featured?sub_confirmation=1https://www.matthewkelly.comGet Matthew's 60 Second Wisdom delivered to your inbox: https://www.matthewkelly.com/subscribe The Best Version of Yourself and 60 Second Wisdom are registered trademarks.#MatthewKelly #BestVersionOfYourself #BestVersion #ThoughtLeader

In this episode, Jeremy and Steven talk with Charles Kiser about his forthcoming book “Trauma-Informed Evangelism: Cultivating Communities of Wounded Healers” which address questions such as: How do we love our neighbors well who carry religious trauma? How do we embody the good news of the way of Jesus in ways that are actually good news for those who have been hurt, harmed, and even abused in the name of the gospel of Jesus, in the name of a version of God or Christianity? Charles helps us reframe evangelism in the terms of being and becoming the gospel in ways that are not only appropriate in relationships with neighbors who have experienced spiritual trauma, but change our understanding of evangelism altogether. Charles is the lead minister with Storyline Community in Dallas. Trauma-Informed Evangelism, which he co-authors with Elaine Heath, comes out April 2023. Pre-order a copy wherever you get your books. We've only got one more week of At The Movies — time flies when you're having fun, as they say! Brook is on vacation with his family, and the legendary Tanner Hodges is back to host this week's episode. He and Loren discuss hostile monkeys in Japan and how Tanner still owes Shelby a good honeymoon. They also review a few biblical thoughts on the Disney film, Encanto, and how we can reframe how we see our gifts and weaknesses. Finally, Tanner brings a timely, much-needed invitation to dream again. Links From The Episode At The Movies Week 4 Replay The Wounded Healer by Henri Nouwen Did you miss Sunday? We are all broken. We all need someone who understands, loves us anyway and will listen to our story. You can be that person for others everyday. You can be a wounded healer.
