In this episode, we discuss breaking up complex research projects into phases. This is a great way to make progress on a research question that might otherwise seem daunting. We'll talk about how to identify the mother of Elsie, a woman born in 1820, as an example of how to set up phases for research. We'll also discuss how to determine which phases are necessary and how to write research objectives. We wrap it up with a discussion of Diana's Clemsy Cline project phases. The Clemsy Cline project sought to identify the father of Mary "Clemsey" Cline. Clemsy was born about 1817 in Alabama and died after 1880 in Wise County, Texas. She married William Henderson Weatherford in about 1839 in Arkansas. Phase 1 of the project focused on finding a candidate for Clemsy's father. Diana analyzed census records from 1850, 1860, and 1880 and concluded that she was most likely born between 1817 and 1820 in Alabama. Her father would have been born before 1800 in Virginia. The researchers also found that Clemsy was associated with a number of people in Arkansas, including Jacob Cline, Mahala Cline, and John Cline. These individuals were all living in the same area at the time that Clemsy was born, and they may have been able to provide some clues about her father's identity. Phase 2 of the project focused on exploring the land patents of Clemsy Cline's FANs. Diana identified three Cline individuals who patented land in Izard County, Arkansas, between 1838 and 1850: John C. Cline, Mahala Cline, and John Cline. Diana believes that these land patents may provide some clues about the father of Clemsy Cline. Phase 3 of the Clemsy Cline project is currently ongoing andseeks to test the hypothesis that John C. Cline was the biological father of Clemsy Cline. Using DNA evidence and documentary research, Diana has found a cluster of Clines in a network graph. This cluster includes descendants of Mahala Cline Shockley and descendants of John C. Cline through his 1850 census family with probable second wife, Milky Cline. They are joined by special guest Otis Tolbert. Otis is the Managing Director and Global Practice Leader of Aon's Rail and Transit Practice. He has been with AON since 1998 and has served clients as a strategic advisor on complex risks. As Global Practice Leader, Otis has responsibility for thought leadership, product innovation, strategic direction, and financial performance of one of Aon's oldest industry segment practice groups; rail and transit.Excess liability requirements for commuter rail roads have shifted due in part to existing US policy as well as shared use agreements with freight, PTC, and other considerations. The impacts to the industry are significant and, should our commuter railroads find themselves unable to meet the increasing coverage requirements, could leave our passengers stranded at the platforms. Listen in to hear from the experts about what's happening, potential solutions, and an understanding of our call to action.

Today's episode of Research Like a Pro is about Diana's experiment to see if doing surname searches at each DNA testing website could help her find matches about a research question. She then used the results of her searches to decide if she had enough matches to work on this research objective. Mary “Clemsy” Cline, born in 1818 in Missouri, is one of our brick walls. Diana talks about using the search features at AncestryDNA, 23andMe, FTDNA, and MyHeritage to filter her match list and find DNA matches with the surname Cline in their family tree. Once she found matches descending from the research subject, Mary Cline, and her hypothesized father, John Cline, Diana determined that there were enough matches to work with that she could do this project. We talk about finding additional matches using the shared matches of those found through the surname search. Links Leeds Method: Why Do I Have More Than 4 Clusters? Join Barbara Ellen Smith and Chris Hamby as the discuss their new books, Digging our Own Graves and Soul Full of Coal Dust. Employment and production in the Appalachian coal industry have plummeted over recent decades. But the lethal black lung disease, once thought to be near-eliminated, affects miners at rates never before recorded. Digging Our Own Graves: Coal Miners and the Struggle over Black Lung Disease sets this epidemic in the context of the brutal assault, begun in the 1980s and continued since, on the United Mine Workers of America and the collective power of rank-and-file coal miners in the heart of the Appalachian coalfields. This destruction of militancy and working class power reveals the unacknowledged social and political roots of a health crisis that is still barely acknowledged by the state and coal industry. Barbara Ellen Smith 's essential study, now with an updated introduction and conclusion, charts the struggles of miners and their families from the birth of the Black Lung Movement in 1968 to the present-day importance of demands for environmental justice through proposals like the Green New Deal. Through extensive interviews with participants and her own experiences as an activist, the author provides a vivid portrait of communities struggling for survival against the corporate extraction of labor, mineral wealth, and the very breath of those it sends to dig their own graves. In Soul Full of Coal Dust: A Fight for Breath and Justice in Appalachia Pulitzer Prize winner Chris Hamby uncovers the tragic resurgence of black lung disease in Appalachia, its Big Coal cover-up, and the resilient mining communities who refuse to back down. Decades ago, a grassroots uprising forced Congress to enact long-overdue legislation designed to virtually eradicate black lung disease and provide fair compensation to coal miners stricken with the illness. Today, however, both promises remain unfulfilled. Levels of disease have surged, the old scourge has taken an aggressive new form, and ailing miners and widows have been left behind by a dizzying legal system, denied even modest payments and medical care. In this urgent work of investigative journalism, Hamby traces the unforgettable story of how these trends converge in the lives of two men: Gary Fox, a black lung-stricken West Virginia coal miner determined to raise his family from poverty, and John Cline, an idealistic carpenter. ---------------------------------------------------- Speakers: Barbara Ellen Smith is professor of women's and gender studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the author of Digging Our Own Graves: Coal Miners and the Struggle over Black Lung Disease. Chris Hamby is an investigative reporter at The New York Times. He won the Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting in 2014 and was a finalist for the prize in international reporting in 2017. He has covered a range of subjects, including labor, public health, the environment, criminal justice, politics and international trade. 5 Bedtime Habits That Ruin Sleep // SPARTAN HEALTH 021

The Hard Way w/ Joe De Sena

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2019 3:15

One in three adults in the U.S. don’t get a good night’s sleep. Some reasons might be physical problems (like apnea) or mental distress. But for many, it’s simply bad habits. Here are five easy ways to improve your chances for restful sleep. WHAT WE TALK ABOUT Number 1: You’re Using Electronics Right Before You Fall Asleep We’ve all done it – spending minutes or even hours scrolling through social media before bed. Researchers have found that people who used electronics before bed saw a significant reduction of melatonin in their body, a chemical that regulates our body’s sleep patterns. The decreased levels of melatonin in their bodies made it harder to fall asleep. Replace your phone with a book or newspaper for a much better bedtime ritual. Number 2: You’re Drinking Caffeine Within 3 Hours of Sleeping Caffeine is a stimulant that can make it hard for you to fall asleep, so try to make your last cup more than three hours before bedtime. If you’re looking for a warm drink before bed, many herbal teas like chamomile can help you relax and reduce stress right before bed. Number 3: You’re Eating Right Before You Go To Bed Always try to finish eating at least three hours before bed. Why? Eating increases your blood sugar and insulin levels, which in turn makes it much harder for you to fall asleep. Number 4: Your Bedtime Is All Over The Place If some nights you go to bed at 2 am, and other nights you go to bed at 9 pm, your body’s circadian rhythm isn’t syncing up. By having a consistent bedtime, your body gets used to falling asleep and waking up at the same times, which can make you more alert in the morning. A good solution: try to go to bed at the same time every night! Number 5: Your Bedroom Is Too Warm While sleeping, your body temperature naturally begins to dip. Sleeping in a room that is more than 68 degrees can make it much harder for your body to fall asleep. If it’s too hot, you’ll be battling with you covers all night. In short, pick a time to go to sleep, wind down before that time, and don’t let distractions like eating or talking on the phone get in the way of winding down. You’ll likely wake up rested, recharged and ready for the day ahead!   KEY TERMS & IDEAS One in three adults in the U.S. don’t get a good night’s sleep. Some reasons might be physical problems (like apnea) or mental distress. But for many, it’s simply bad habits. These habits are easy to change. In this podcast, we look at six bad habits that many people fall into. Circadian rhythms are physical, mental, and behavioral changes that follow a daily cycle. Deep sleep is a time of nearly complete disengagement from the environment (Psychology Today).   LINKS & RESOURCES: Follow Dr. Nada on: Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/nada-milo... They are based at the University of Guelph in Ontario Canada.   The Ontario Craft Cider Association approach Dr. Cline looking for access to cider varieties and to get an understanding of how they would grow in Canada. Look at the horticultural aspects of growing these cider varieties in Canada, such as; How productive are they? What might be the issues facing the cider apple trees selected? How to they work with the root stock M9? What are their disease and insect susceptibility? How prone are they to winter injury in Canada? The results of this research and starting data should begin to show preliminary information in 2017. Says Dr. Cline, "In Canada apples are second to blueberries in terms of fruit crops. In terms of tree crops they are number 1" What is the difference between a young tree vs an older tree?  Between 1-4 years, the fruit is softer and apples do not store as well The goal is to have trees  producing more fruits and yielding a higher crop load on the tree and consistent size. The pomologist are studying, young trees grown in a high density orchard: They take leaf samples (mid july) to assess the nitrogen concentration in a plant. What is the  nitrogen range for apple trees? They are looking to find 2.2% nitrogen on a dry matter leaf. If that is lower than 2.2, orchardist will work towards increasing the nitrogen for that tree. Too much nitrogen lends to poor quality Says Derek, "The cidermaker is taking care of the juice as a medium for yeast" Contact info for Dr. Cline and Derek Plotkowski Dr. John Cline Email: jcline@uoguelph.ca  Faculty Page: http://www.plant.uoguelph.ca/jcline Map: Click here http://www.plant.uoguelph.ca/people-and-places/research-sites/simcoe-station Webpage: http://www.plant.uoguelph.ca/treefruit/ Derek Plotskowski Email: dplotkow@uoguelph.ca Mentions in this chat International Organization of Wine and Vine If you like this chat and what Cider Chat offers to you.
