She highlights the importance of flexibility in her work schedule, which allows her to be there for her daughter while continuing to pursue her passion for therapy. She know she's at this particular juncture as an entrepreneur and relationship therapist (a dream come true) due to her family journey as a special needs parent. After taking ample time to navigate the special needs world and tend to her family in ways she could not imagine, and reentering the workforce as a Y coach at the YMCA, she was led back to her passion as a relationship therapist and expanded upon this dream by becoming an entrepreneur. Speech First, Inc. v. Sands concerns a Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) policy that created a bias response team and protocol where students could report bias incidents. Under this policy, reported incidents would be reviewed and possibly reported to the administration for a formal reprimand. In 2021, Speech First, Inc., a group that focuses on students' freedom of speech on university campuses, filed suit against Virginia Tech on behalf of several students for chilling their right to speech through the bias incident policies. The district court hearing the case ruled in favor of Virginia Tech finding that the Bias Incident policy didn’t specifically outline any particular speech that was chilled for the students being represented and thus the policy wasn’t found to chill speech. In 2022, the Fourth Circuit affirmed the lower court's decision. The Supreme Court granted certiorari in the case, gave judgment with respect to the Bias Policy claims vacated, and remanded the case to the 4th Circuit with instructions to dismiss those claims as moot under United States v. Munsingwear, Inc. Multiple Justices, including Justices Thomas and Alito, filed dissents.Join us for a litigation update on this important case in light of those developments.Featuring: Abigail Smith, Amicus Attorney, The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression(Moderator) Tyson Langhofer, Senior Counsel, Director of Center for Academic Freedom, Alliance Defending Freedom

COW COUNTRY NEWS The SEC Seeks To Halt A $191 Million Cattle Ponzi Scheme According DTN Progressive Farmer and Meating Place, The Securities and Exchange Commission has frozen the assets of a Texas-based cattle marketing company, alleging the company fraudulently sold securities in "cattle contracts" as a $191 million Ponzi scheme that would "soon implode." The company, Agridime LLC out of Fort Worth, Texas, is now under a court-ordered receivership under the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas with Agridime's assets frozen after the SEC obtained a temporary restraining order against Agridime and its owners. Agridime has raised $191 million since 2021 from more than 2,100 investors in at least 15 states, the SEC stated. The SEC stated Agridime, however, had less than $1.5 million in cash as of Sept. 30, and insufficient operating revenues. The SEC stated, "It appears that Agridime's Ponzi scheme will soon implode unless it continues to raise money from new investor-victims." Agridime sells investment contracts related to the buying and selling of cattle, dubbed as "cattle contracts." The SEC complaint stated Agridime promised investors guaranteed annual returns ranging from 15% to 20% -- going as high as 32% -- and marketed cattle contracts on Agridime's website as a way for investors to passively profit from owning cattle "without having to do all of the work." Agridime is owned by Jed Wood, 62, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Josh Link, 30, of Gilbert, Arizona. Both are named as defendants in the case. Wood and Link founded Agridime in 2017. The SEC alleges they told investors that Agridime would use their funds to acquire, feed, and raise cattle on its network of ranches, and investors would help provide “fellow Americans with the highest quality farm fresh beef available.” However, as the complaint alleges, the defendants did not purchase nearly enough cattle or generate sufficient revenues from cattle operations to deliver the promised returns. Instead, the complaint alleges that, since December 2022, the defendants have used at least $58 million of new investor funds to make Ponzi payments to prior investors and more than $11 million to pay undisclosed sales commissions to Wood, Link, Link's wife, and other Agridime sales representatives. A U.S. District Judge extended the SEC's temporary restraining order until Jan. 9, 2024, and delayed a hearing on the SEC's request for a preliminary injunction until a hearing now set for Jan. 5, 2024. Some Top Highlighted Stories of 2023 from The Cattle Business Weekly Cattle Prices Climb Throughout the year cattle prices continued to climb on all classes of cattle. That was a welcome relief for many cattle operations as higher interest rates and input costs were making bottom lines thin. During the fall calf run October-November fresh weaned calves brought $1600-$1800 per head. That is almost double what was realized in 2022. Prices tapered off with uncertainty in the board as the final month of the year arrived, but overall prices were still above the year prior. Big Boost To Agricultural Research Funding USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture has established a new Research Facilities Act Program competitive grant program, which was approved to provide one-year funds for the first time in 2023. The program is designed to assist in the construction, alteration, acquisition, modernization, renovation, or remodeling of an agricultural research facility to enhance the institution's long-term impact on food and agricultural research. Awardees include: Mississippi State University, Texas A&M AgriLife Research, University of Idaho, University of Illinois, University of Kentucky, University of Vermont and State Agricultural College, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Additional public and private funding sources are also emerging with a focus on agricultural research. As examples: the University of California at Davis received a $50 million private donation to build an agricultural research hub. Similarly, Ohio State University is developing an AgTech Innovation Hub and the University of Idaho will receive $55 million from USDA for ag research. Both efforts will research how to combat the impact of climate change. As well, Mississippi State University recently opened the Agricultural Autonomy Institute, the nation's first and only interdisciplinary research center focused on autonomous technologies to enhance on-farm precision and efficiency. Cattle Contracts Library Pilot Program Will Continue Made available in January 2023, the USDA launched the Cattle Contracts Library Pilot Program in an effort to support the cattle market and show transparency in contract terms offered by packers to producers for the purchase of cattle. In October, the USDA continued the Cattle Contracts Library Pilot Program in order to continue reporting vital market information for farmers and ranchers while gathering additional information on the effectiveness of the pilot. Support For More Regional Meat Processing Grows Piggybacking off of USDA funding in 2022, came additional funding for meat processors this year. $125 million through two new grant programs was created to offer more options for meat and poultry farmers by investing in independent, local meat and poultry processing projects that increase competition and enhance the resiliency of the food supply chain. An additional $43 million was given for meat and poultry processing research, innovation and expansion in USDA's support of its ongoing efforts to transform the food system at every stage along the supply chain. It was on this morning one year ago that the people of Ukraine were awoken to the sounds of air raid sirens and bombs as Russia invaded the country. But 12 months into what Vladimir Putin describes as his “special military operation,” is there any end in sight for the war? Kira Rudyk, Ukrainian MP gave her thoughts this morning 12 months on from the brutal invasion. Also speaking to Newstalk Breakfast was Gerard Toal Professor of Government and International Affairs at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Gene editing. What might sound like exciting possibilities to some cattlemen can seem like science fiction to others. Is gene editing the same as a genetically modified organism (GMO)? Is the technology already being used today? What problems could it help us solve and what cautions do we have? The American Angus Association has adopted rules for how a gene-edited animal would make it into the breed registry, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions and discussions to have. This conversation with geneticists Larry Kuehn and Maci Mueller helps unpack those. GUESTS: Larry Kuehn was raised on a diversified (cow-calf, feedlot, grain, hay) farm near Heartwell, Neb. He received a bachelor's degree in animal science from the University of Nebraska, a master's in animal breeding from Colorado State University, and a doctorate in animal breeding from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He was hired as a postdoctoral research associate at the USDA, ARS, U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) in 2006 and as a permanent research geneticist that same year. He served as the research leader for the Genetics and Animal Breeding Research unit at USMARC. Kuehn is a co-leader of the USMARC Germplasm Evaluation (GPE) program. In this role, he coordinates the sampling and mating of industry representative sires from 18 beef breed associations and the subsequent phenotyping of offspring for economically relevant traits. Kuehn uses results from this program to produce yearly updates to the across-breed expected progeny difference (EPD) adjustment factors; this analysis provides up-to-date estimates of breed differences for EPD measured growth and carcass traits in 18 breeds of beef cattle. The GPE population is also the primary beef resource for genomic discovery at USMARC and has been extensively genotyped with high-density marker arrays. Maci Mueller is completing her doctorate in livestock genomics and biotechnology at the University of California, Davis where she is working with Alison Van Eenennaam. Mueller is originally from Princeton, Neb., where she was actively involved in her family's first-generation seedstock operation, Lienetics Angus Ranch. This experience was instrumental in developing her career goal of becoming an animal geneticist. She earned her bachelor's in animal science with a political science minor from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and her master's in animal biology from UC Davis. Maci's graduate research is focused on the application of genetic-based biotechnology, specifically gene editing, to improve livestock production. Maci is passionate about effective science communication and is driven to provide research and education to expand the availability and application of genetic-based biotechnologies in livestock production systems to improve animal health and welfare and production efficiency. We are chatting with Doctor Ben Snyder, he was one of the Floridians who took on the Barkley Fall Classic this year with an epic story to tell. In the episode, we chat about psychology, performance, imposter syndrome, finding your why, and how it went down at the 2022 Barkley Fall Classic! Dr. Snyder earned his bachelor's degree in Psychology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2004 and completed a master's degree in Counseling from the Johns Hopkins University in 2008. He finished his doctoral training in Counseling Psychology at the University of Georgia in 2012. He has done races like the Barkley Fall Classic last year with a DNF, the Wy'east Trail Fest in Mt. Hood, and the Gateway 50k. The Barkley Fall Classic is designed to give the runner a taste of what the Barkley Marathons is all about. It contains all the elements; beautiful trails thru the rugged Brushy Mountains, surprising new elements to the course every year, with the course map not revealed until the night before the race, numerous hard climbs and descents (including some of the signature hills that have made the Barkley a thing of legend), and a very personal challenge to face down the demons that wait for us at our very limits of endurance.
Heat stress can severely affect the feeding behavior, immune response, and production performance of dairy cows. Besides, it also has the potential to affect not only lactation cows, but calves and dry cows as well. Our guests, Drs. Peter Hansen, Lance Baumgard, and Agustin Rius, have different focuses in their researches on how heat stress impacts those animals. Thus, a round table discussion is held in today's episode to discuss how we can better understand the way cows are affected by heat stress, and the consequences of that.“The more milk cows produce, the less they are able to regulate their physiology to deal with heat stress.” - Dr. Peter Hansen

Sightline System is a software company based in Fairfax, Virginia, and has a pretty colorful history. The company first started doing data performance monitoring collection for mainframe environments. About 15 years ago, Brandon was on a trip to Japan, and one of the customers there said his work would be great for their manufacturing plant. They were having issues and were trying to understand what was causing them. With Sightline, they were able to go in and collect data in real-time and give them an easy-to-use way of seeing what was happening, and that's kind of how their journey into manufacturing started just by accident. On this episode, we'll talk about:When it comes to data collection, how does the system work, particularly in areas such as packaging and manufacturing? How do they use artificial intelligence to optimize either information collection or processing? When things start to go wrong, can the data or the AI predict potential fixes, potential solutions, or even potential problems? How many manufacturers in the United States use systems to optimize production?Have they come across any circumstances where data has been able to be shared with other members of the supply or value chain to assist in improving production timelines, preventing issues, inventory levels, or something similar? Is there any other way that sightline may be used to improve the sustainability of package manufacturing?Who is their ideal customer, or who do they think would benefit the most from the sightline in the packaging or manufacturing industries? Is he seeing many opportunities or changes for sightline to adopt some of those technologies as the world shifts into web 3.0 and blockchain and all of that?Where does he see the sightline system heading in 10 years, 20 years, or 50 years? What is the potential?Brandon Witte, CEO of SightLine System, experienced Chief Executive Officer with a demonstrated history of working in the computer software industry. Research is a passion for Jacobs, but his favorite part of the day includes walking the pastures to check on the horses.
Supporting Ukraine has become a sacred cause among western powers that makes escalation of the war beyond Ukraine more likely and resolution more difficult. That was the view of Gerard Toal Professor of Government and International Affairs at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University who joined us on yesterday's show. Dr. Shane O'Rourke - Senior Lecturer in Modern Russian History in the University of York however disagrees with Gerard and believes that this would not appease Vladamir Putin and that his war would continue. Dr. Shane O'Rourke joined Ciara Doherty on the show this morning.

In the early years of the 17th Century, religious warfare was raging in Europe and England was struggling with various reform factions that caused deep divisions and violence. Recent archaeological evidence from Jamestown suggests that the Colony was far more religiously diverse than previously realized and those divides had an enormous impact on the shape of the Colony's politics and governing principles. Our host, John Ericson, will explore this history with guest speaker Mark Summers.Mark Summers is the Director of Public and Youth Programming at Jamestowne Rediscovery. Summers has an expertise in the English Reformation with a focus on how the religious divides in England carried over to the first permanent English Settlement in Virginia. Summers has an undergraduate degree in History from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a Master's from the University of Mississippi. Intro and outro created by Thomas Fosdick. Project supported by a grant from Virginia Humanities.

(05:39) – Many of the assumptions into our established models and established thinking about industries and supply chains had to be questioned because of unforeseen events like the pandemic. Scenario modeling is not just making a prediction, it must also guide the decisions and the need to provide the right abstractions.(07:19) – There is an approach steeped in mathematical statistics and probability theory. And a more computationally-driven approach which shows how computer science, as a discipline, changed its focus from focus on compute, to focus on data.(10:34) – There are transactional systems, analytics systems, machine learning and data science, all somewhat based on existing technology purpose-built for a certain use case, and what we're seeing is the use cases coming together. These worlds need to come together through a data foundation where the workloads can all converge. Silos and empires that need to be connected.(16:15) – The explosion of neural network technology over the last 15 years due to the availability of big compute and cloud computing has allowed to solve much deeper problems, and we need larger amounts of data to train those models. (16:33) – Modern AI, data-driven AI and machine learning applications recognize patterns. Neural networks are trained to detect patterns. The next generation of models might be more contextual or build out from individual component models where humans can interact with the system and understand how it drives its conclusion, and then correct it.(20:35) – We need to empower all of us to work with data and to contribute to driving the world with data and driving the world with models more. We need to be more data literate. But we also need better tooling that allows low-code and no-code contributions (23:28) – The future of data science is decision science. (25:38) – We have technology at our disposal, that makes us “prosumers” who consume and produce at the same time. And data should be the same way. We should be able to produce what we need based on data, not just consume. (28:28) – Innovation is key to success in technology. Innovation is about turning creativity and curiosity into value, and value has to be tied to the core of what we do, core of the business, core of what our customer needs. (30:51) – The elements of building technology: connectivity, automation and culture.(32:43) – Turn the data into decisions and drive the business, and that is SingleStore's specialty.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The College Metropolis Podcast: College Admissions Talk for High School Students and Parents
#050 – Today, Jankel and I present the Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science. This is a degree that leads to a number of careers that are and will continue to be in high demand, are very well-paid, and are extremely important to organizations of all types. The episode begins with a discussion on the important role computer science plays in the modern world, and the continue importance it will yield in the future. We present some of the hot topics related to computer science, including, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, Bioinformatics, Computer-Assisted Education, and Cybersecurity. Jankel presents the skills necessary for a person to succeed in a career in computer science. We dive deep into the Bachelor of Science degree of Computer Science at Virginia Tech, a university with one of the best computer science programs in the country. Our exploration of Virginia Tech also goes over admission data for the 2021-2021 academic year. As the episode crosses the midpoint, we introduce 7 occupation titles available to computer science graduates. For each, we provide the amount of professionals that are believed will be needed by the year 2029, median salary, and an explanation of the responsibilities a professional in one of those careers is expected to carry out. We also present one popular career for which the job outlook is negative by almost 10%, in other words, by the year 2029 there will be a need for 10% less professionals that were needed in 2019. The reason for such a decrease is the easiness with which that job may be outsourced to professionals in other countries. After listening to this episode, you will understand the importance of computer science to society and organizations around the world, and the number of great high-responsibility, well-paid, and high-demand positions that a computer science graduate may occupy, even when lacking job experience. You can find our show notes at https://collegemetropolis.com/50. Please help us reach other high school students and parents by giving us a 5-star rating, and a leaving us a positive review.
