Wait, what? What just happened? To who? When? And it just flipped when it landed? A 13th kid with a fourth woman? Does that have anything to do with the other thing? You know, the one that just happened. Or maybe that was last week… The first month of Trump 47 has felt more like 47 weeks than it has four, with a relentless barrage of executive orders, personnel decisions, and, let's say, charitably unconventional accounting procedures that have kicked ant piles both foreign and domestic. And with all of that, much of what you read on social media, Substack, or in your podcast feed is likely very, very hyperbolic—or, if you're on the conservative side of the aisle, particularly gleeful. My goal, however, is to ask a simple question every day: What actually matters? On this episode of the show, we're going to talk to two people with vastly different perspectives on the political system. First, we have Gabe Fleisher, who writes the Wake Up to Politics newsletter and, even as a fresh college graduate, has probably forgotten more about political history and minutiae than the average voter has ever cared to learn. On the other end of the spectrum, we have John Teasdale, an entrepreneur and co-creator of The Contender card game, who intentionally disconnected himself from politics for the past year and has only just returned stateside.“Sure, Justin, I'll enjoy both of those conversations. But what about me? What does that give me as a framework to understand what's happening right now?” Well, to help with that, I want to dust off something that doesn't usually get brought out in the political realm, but given the breakneck pace of news, I think it's worth it. In 2013, WNYC's On the Media program put out a helpful infographic titled the Breaking News Consumer Handbook. You've probably seen it during major events like shootings or tragedies, but with the flood of headlines right now, I think it's worth revisiting its five core tenets and applying them to this moment. In the immediate aftermath of any major event, most news outlets will get it wrong. This is crucial to remember because, amid the deluge of information, you owe it to yourself to slow down. Wait a few days, maybe even a week, before getting worked up about something. Half-truths, gossip, and rumor fly out of every orifice in Washington, and with time, further context often clarifies the situation—or at least reveals whether it's even newsworthy. Don't you deserve the full set of facts before being led around by the nose by the outrage machine? I think you do. Don't trust anonymous sources. Case in point: as I was recording, a story broke from NBC News stating that U.S. intelligence indicates Vladimir Putin isn't interested in a real peace deal. The sources? Four anonymous sources—two congressional aides and two intel sources, presumably provided by those aides. The article essentially asserts that while Putin may negotiate with Trump, he's not deterred from taking Ukraine in the long run. To which I say: da-doi. Unless you genuinely believed that Putin was going to apologize for invading Ukraine and promise never to do it again, this “news” adds no value. It doesn't outline the parameters of a peace deal, Russia's red lines, or any concrete details. It simply reiterates that Putin remains an authoritarian thug, which, let's be real, even MAGA supporters acknowledge. The end of war is not a morality play—it's about making decisions that stop people from dying. This story is calorie free by making a stupid point and not even using named sources to do it.Don't trust stories that cite other media outlets as sources. This is a favorite trick of churn-media articles, particularly those designed to game Facebook's algorithm. If you mostly get your news from social media, you're consuming content optimized for engagement, not accuracy. These outlets often regurgitate information from elsewhere, making their legitimacy dubious at best. Fourth, and this one is more relevant to shootings, but still applicable…There is almost never a second shooter. In a broader sense, Occam's razor applies—sometimes the simplest explanation is the correct one. While plenty of conspiracy theories have turned out to be true (COVID lab leak, Hunter Biden's laptop, etc.), not everything that pops up on social media is exactly what it seems, especially when it comes to government spending. Right now, people are combing through federal expenditures, uncovering what might appear to be scandals. Give it time. Wait a few days before reacting and hitting retweet.Pay attention to the language the media uses. Phrases like “we are getting reports” could mean anything. “We are seeking confirmation” means they don't have confirmation. “The news outlet has learned” means they have a scoop or are going out on a limb. Stick to fundamental journalism: a compelling lead, a nut graph that clearly outlines the news, and at least three on-the-record sources directly involved in the situation. If those elements aren't there, take the story with a grain of salt. In truth, there isn't as much actual news as the fire hose of content would suggest. There's plenty of gossip, innuendo, and hot takes, and that's before you get to people in the arena yelling at each other on social media. But real, capital-N news? That's much rarer than it seems.Chapters00:00:00 : Introduction and Overview00:01:20 : Political Analysis and Current Events00:02:04 : Breaking News Consumer Handbook00:11:04 : Interview with Gabe Fleischer00:51:14 : Update on Ukraine-Russia Peace Deal00:57:02 : New York Mayor Eric Adams' Administration Turmoil01:00:03 : Elon Musk and Fort Knox Investigation01:01:51 : Interview with John Teasdale01:25:38 : Show Wrap-Up and Listener Support This is a public episode. Since we are in mental awareness month, I thought about approaching this exact topic here on the channel. Normally I wouldn't approach such high and dense topics since I only feel like I generalize a lot, even if the information comes from literature, articles, reviews, institutions, and international organizations that deal with the issue. We explored what does Mental Health mean for us (as I asked you), some definitions of the most commonly used terms (such as anxiety, gaslighting), some trends in mental health awareness between 1993 and 2023 (30 years), and some applicable methods on how to make our day better if we feel down or in a bad mood. Before I go, here's the most common definition I could find about Mental health, as defined in the field of psychology: "Mental health refers to a person's emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It encompasses how individuals think, feel, and behave, and it influences how they handle stress, relate to others, and make choices." I hope this episodes lives up to the expectations! Thank you all for being understanding and empathic

David Lorimer's guest today is Cynthia Bourgeault, who is a modern-day mystic, Episcopal priest, writer, and internationally acclaimed retreat leader. She divides her time between solitude in her seaside hermitage in Maine and a demanding schedule travelling globally to spread the recovery of the Christian contemplative and Wisdom paths. She is a faculty member emeritus of the Center for Action and Contemplation and the founding director of an international network of Wisdom schools, uniting classic Christian mystical and monastic teaching with contemporary practices of mindfulness and embodied presence.Cynthia's signature contribution to the Christian contemplative reawakening has focused in four main areas: Centering Prayer; the Christian Wisdom Tradition; the Christian Inner and Fourth Way Traditions; and The Path of Conscious Love.Imaginal Inspirations is hosted by David Lorimer, Programme Director of the Scientific and Medical Network and Chair of the Galileo Commission, an academic movement dedicated to expanding the evidence base of a science of consciousness. Imaginal cells are responsible for the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into a butterfly, which is the Greek symbol for the soul. These cells are dormant in the caterpillar but at a critical point of development they create the new form and structure which becomes the butterfly.scientificandmedical.net galileocommission.orgbeyondthebrain.org Works and links mentioned:Cynthia Bourgeault https://cynthiabourgeault.org/Books by Cynthia Bourgeault: https://uk.bookshop.org/books?keywords=Cynthia+BourgeaultThe Future of Wisdom by Bruno Barnhart: https://uk.bookshop.org/books/the-future-of-wisdom-toward-a-rebirth-of-sapiential-christianity/9781939681829In Search of the Miraculous by P.D. Way back in 2000, Mark Williams opened doors for her to start bringing mindfulness to the patients of a Welsh oncology department where Trish herself had just finished treatment. Over the 20 years that followed, she continued to teach enabling the programme to slowly adapt from the original MBCT, with John Teasdale guiding Trish as they teased out what was needed for this particular group. From this, a workbook for teachers was published (Bartley, 2012) followed by a book for people with cancer themselves (Bartley, 2017). Trish has continued to work with people with cancer, including training many teachers in the programme in the UK and further afield, and offering online one to one connections to a few people at the end of their lives.

In this episode of the MindSpace podcast, Dr. Joe speaks with Dr. Zindel Segal. Zindel is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology in Mood Disorders at the University of Toronto. He is best known for co-founding Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), along with his UK colleagues, Mark Williams and John Teasdale. MBCT is an adaptation of Jon Kabat-Zinn’s eight week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program for people suffering from depression. It combines the tools of cognitive therapy with the practice of mindfulness. The focus is on changing the relationship with one’s thoughts rather than the thoughts themselves. It has proven to be especially effective in preventing the relapse of depressive episodes. Zindel has made an enormous contribution to the field of clinical psychology. His impact is reflected in an impressive publication record: he is an author of over 100 scientific publications, some in high profile medical journals and some featured in popular news media such as the Wall Street Journal, CNN Health and the New York Times. He is also an author of 10 books, including 2 very well-known ones on MBCT: 1) The Mindful Way Through Depression, which is a guide to using mindfulness to manage mood and 2) Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression, which is the bible for teachers of MBCT. In this episode, they discuss: - The story behind the creation and evolution of MBCT - Zindel’s take on how exactly MBCT and CBT are helpful for managing mood - The challenges he and is team are facing around the dissemination of MBCT - The current science of mindfulness and well-being

Strathspey Thistle secured their first win since mid-April with a deserved victory over Huntly. Having gone into the game with one point, Donly McLeod was delighted after seeing his side concede eight goals to Huntly last season. Huntly have now made their worst start to a Highland League season since 2006/07 winning only one out of six in all competitions. A fuming John Teasdale criticised some of his players and hinted that there may be even more movement out of the club
Huntly secured their first win of the season with a comfortable 5-1 win over Rothes to move up to fourteenth place. After four defeats in all competitions going into Saturday’s game, a pleased John Teasdale gave his thoughts on the game Having seen his side go down to the second defeat in succession, Rothes Boss Graham McBeath admitted it could've been a heaver defeat.
After back to back defeats in their first two league games, Nairn County found themselves bottom of the table and after a superb performance over on Saturday they kick-started their season with a superb 6-1 win over Huntly. Nairn Manager Les Fridge was pleased with the performance of his players from start to finish. Huntly now find themselves second bottom of the table with only Fort William worse off on goal difference and after seeing his side concede fifteen goals in all competitions losing four times. John Teasdale praised the performance of keeper Neil Hastie while hinting he may be looking to buy and sell players within the next week.

To practice shifting into being mode, try this 7-minute guided practice called "Two Ways of Knowing" from The Mindful Way Workbook by John Teasdale. We can learn to switch out of automatic pilot by bringing our awareness to the present moment. When we do this, we start to see that we have a choice, and this is often the first step in taking care of ourselves.

Josh Rychert joins us today. He will be talking about the recovery community called Recovery Dharma, in Boise, Idaho. Josh shares his personal story and explains how mindfulness, Buddhism, and learning to understand his dharma assisted him and can assist others too, by bringing the elements of peace and calmness into their lives and their recovery process. Episode Link>>>>> www.theaddictedmind.com/88 ( http://www.theaddictedmind.com/88 ) Josh is in Boise, Idaho, where he has been involved in the recovery community since 2014. Recovery Dharma, under that name, only came into being last year. Recovery Dharma in Boise started as Refuge Recovery, with small groups and alliances with other similar groups through an online presence. Recovery Dharma is an addiction recovery peer support group, with meetings all over the nation. It uses Buddhism, with the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, as a way to structure recovery for individuals. Josh's recovery began in 1995. After having had issues with an alcohol use disorder, he became involved with Twelve Step groups. And after many years of recovery, Josh eventually found himself moving away from the Twelve Steps and developing an interest in meditation, to help his depression. Eventually, he rediscovered his need for a recovery community, and he fell into the Buddhist addiction recovery path, under the name of Refuge Recovery. Buddhism was something that recognized Josh's capacity to have a life where compulsions and addictions were not the primary focus. It offered him an opportunity to identify with a recovery path that didn't identify with his addiction. He could, however, still recognize the risk of compulsions and addictions in his life. The kind of present moment experience that Josh wanted from Buddhism was the experience of seeing the world clearly, being able to participate in life, and simply being alive and happy. While recognizing, at the same time, that he had certain risks to his wellness. Buddhism offers a spiritual path, it uses mindfulness and meditation, and it recognizes addiction as a risk. It addresses the recovery from addiction as what is happening in one's life in the present moment, as it is being lived, rather than having a focus on the past, and an identification with a set of behaviors to retain recovery. After the initial concerns with a compulsive or addictive behavior have been addressed, it's about living life and knowing that there is a tendency for that kind of behavior. Present moment awareness is where the ability to stay in recovery is exercised. For most people in recovery, options are not offered to them in the beginning. People with addictions are usually referred directly to Twelve-Step-based recovery programs, although many people don't resonate with that. Having Buddhism as an option is valuable because it recognizes a modern incarnation of our knowledge of recovery and it does not require reliance on a Higher Power. Mindfulness has been scientifically validated. With cravings, mindfulness helps people to be with the discomfort, and sit through it. Also, when the cravings have lessened, mindfulness helps people to thrive, in the moment. Recovery Dharma offers a way to learn about, and practice meditation, as a supplement to the Eleventh Step in the Twelve-Step Program. Recovery Dharma is broken down into some general categories. There is the practice of meditation, there are recovery meetings, and there is the study of Buddhism. Dharma is often the word used to describe the teachings of Buddhism. More broadly, it describes a sense of truth, or a clear understanding of reality, or the wise teachings that bring about in people a sense of well-being and an ability to connect with the world. It allows people to share their wisdom and it offers them a sense of togetherness. The Recovery Dharma meetings facilitate a sharing of wisdom through engaging in a practice to build a sense of calm and equanimity. The path of Buddhism provides structure and a more wholesome way of life for people in recovery. It also brings in the cultivation of compassion, forgiveness, and a sense of peace, equanimity, calmness, and presence. After his initial experience with the Twelve Steps, Josh continued to feel like an outsider. He did not fit with the feel of the meetings and the program. So he moved away from it and, as a result, he lost the support of the group. But his life went on and he forgot about his problems with addiction. Over time, however, he developed a problem with the compulsive use of internet pornography. He did not enjoy the subtle undercurrent of shame around issues of sex within the Twelve-Step Program, and he realized that with the program, many of the issues around cross-addiction were being swept under the rug, and this often led to denial. This drew Josh towards looking for something that would address the underlying cause of his addiction. Recovery Dharma is a branch of Refuge Recovery and it addresses the underlying causes of people's addictions. A book called The Mindful Way Through Depression, and The Cambridge Insight Meditation Center, in Boston, gave Josh a connection to a very solid Buddhist community. Through these connections, he developed a sense of what Recovery Dharma could represent for people in recovery, as an alternative to the Twelve-Step Program. There's a recognition within the professional community today, that Recovery Dharma, and the practice of meditation, are very valuable to people on the path of recovery. *Links and resources:* https://www.meetup.com/recoverydharmaboise/ Recovery Dharma's Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/groups/recovery.dharma/ The Addicted Mind Website - www.theaddictedmind.com ( http://www.theaddictedmind.com/ ) For more info about Novus Mindful Life Institute, go to www.theaddictedmind.com/help ( http://www.theaddictedmind.com/help ) Join our Facebook group.
