This VoiceAmerica Special points to, and shares from, an important international event of the esteemed Galileo Commission, Dec. 29-30, 2023, featuring contributors to the important new book THE GREAT UPSHIFT: HUMANITY'S COMING ADVANCE TOWARD PEACE AND HARMONY ON THE PLANET, “Roadmaps for Planetary Activists” (https://amzn.to/3PklmXB) by two-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee Ervin Laszlo and David Lorimer, Chair of the Galileo Commission. The Galileo Commission was founded in 2017 to expand the worldview of science. Ninety advisors representing thirty universities worldwide published the well known GALILEO COMMISSION REPORT, which is available in both academic and general public versions: BEYOND A MATERIALIST WORLDVIEW—TOWARDS AN EXPANDED SCIENCE. Contributors to THE GREAT UPSHIFT agree: We have reached a historic turning point -- a 'point of bifurcation' at which we must find new ways to upshift our individual and collective consciousness to ensure the desired resolution of the world's crises. The Great Upshift offers roadmaps for all of us to do this.” This vital book is a compendium of insights into solutions for our world, troubled by climate change, conflict, and unsustainable conditions and calls for our conscious participation in universal values of love and care that we all share-- and which point us toward a world that works for all. David Lorimer cohosts this VoiceAmerica Special, hosting first Ervin Laszlo and then, in order of appearance: Ben Bowler of UNITY EARTH and three time Nautilus Award Winner Dr. Robert Atkinson speaking about this December program and also a February 2024 event with Lazslo, Lorimer and other guests entitled” Awakening to Humanity's Sacred Mission, An International Symposium and Call to Action”, February 9-11, 2024. This Symposium will also be featured here on VoiceAmerica. Then follow discussions with six noted contributors to THE GREAT UPSHIFT— renowned authors and influencers Jude Currivan, Anneloes Smitsman, Charles Eisenstein, Natalie Zeituny, Alfredo de Zayas and Bruce Lipton. "SMN oli 1978. aastal asutanud konverentside sarja „Müstikud ja teadlased“, mina osalesin seal esimest korda 1981. aasta kevadel. Kaks aastat hiljem kohtasin seal Rupert Sheldrake'i ja David Bohmi. David's guest today is Dr Joan Walton, a researcher in the School of Education, Psychology and Language at York St John University, UK. Joan has had an interest in consciousness studies from her early 20s, influenced initially by the work of Carl Jung, which led her to the work of other transpersonal psychologists, philosophers, scientists and writers about religions and spiritual traditions. Her focus has always been on the relevance of intellectual exploration for how we live our lives on a daily basis, and her working life in social work and education has reflected this. Passionate about the importance of early years, Joan's current research focuses on how to enhance the quality of intergenerational relating, with the aim of creating inclusive communities which encourage connection and compassion through the nurturing of mutually caring relationships across generations. Central to this is the idea of a participatory consciousness, in which everything and everyone is interconnected. Joan is a member of the Board of Directors in the SMN, a member of the Galileo Commission Steering Group, and Chair of the Executive Committee of the International Network for the Study of Spirituality. Imaginal Inspirations is hosted by David Lorimer, Programme Director of the Scientific and Medical Network and Chair of the Galileo Commission, an academic movement dedicated to expanding the evidence base of a science of consciousness. "Gnoosises näib olevat mingi ülitugev alge või printsiip, mis teatud regulaarsusega naaseb. Kindlasti mitte säärase usundina, nagu ta oli 1. või 2. sajandi Aleksandrias. Pigem mingi igatsusena. Kingsnorthi [1] tegelased igatsevad samuti jumaliku naispoolust, kes hoiab, päästab, toetab ja lohutab. „Alexandria“ jumalanna ei mõista kohut. Siin on oluline erinevus," ütles Tähenduse teejuhtide 27. numbrile antud intervjuus kirjanik Tiit Aleksejev [2]."Meie praegune epistemoloogia on võrdlemisi piiratud. Põhiprobleemi on kõige lihtsam selgitada vast püha Bonaventura kolme silma kujundi abil. Bonaventura sõnul on meil meelte silm, analüütiline silm ja kontemplatiivne silm. Viimast nimetatakse lääne traditsioonis ka gnoosiseks, see mängib võtmerolli surmalähedastes ja mitmesugustes müstilistes kogemustes," sekundeeris talle lehe 31. numbris intervjueeritud SMN-i [3] direktor David Lorimer [4].Tänases saates räägime gnostitsismist – hilisantiigis ristiusuga rööpselt levinud, idamaiste usundite, Kreeka ja Rooma müstiliste õpetuste sugemeid sisaldavate usuvoolude mitmekesisest kogumist – Tiit Aleksejevi ja kõnealust teemat põhjalikult uurinud teoloog Jaan Lahega [5].Peatse kohtumiseni!H.—————————————[1] https://teejuhid.postimees.ee/7587055...[2] https://teejuhid.postimees.ee/7695769...[3] https://scientificandmedical.net[4] • David Lorimer: "K... In the third episode on my series on occult & esoteric christianity, I talk with writer and researcher David Lorimer about one of esoteric christianity's lesser known but most profound figures, Bulgarian teacher Peter Deunov (1830 - 1918), also known as Beinsa Douno.
Bernard Carr is Emeritus Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy at Queen Mary University of London. For his PhD he studied the first second of the universe with Stephen Hawking at Cambridge University and Caltech. He then held Research Fellowships at Trinity College and the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge before moving to Queen Mary in 1985. He has also held Visiting Professorships at various institutes in America, Canada and Japan. His professional area of research is cosmology and astrophysics and includes such topics as the early universe, black holes, dark matter and the anthropic principle. He is the author of around 300 papers and the books Universe or Multiverse? and Quantum Black Holes. He is very interested in the role of consciousness, regarding this as a fundamental rather than incidental feature of the Universe, and he is developing a new physical paradigm, which accommodates normal, paranormal and mystical experiences. He also has a long-standing interest in the relationship between science and religion and views psychical research as forming a bridge between them. He is President of the Scientific and Medical Network and a former President of the Society for Psychical Research.Imagination is more important than knowledge. David's guest today is Dr Monica Gagliano who is Research Associate Professor in Evolutionary Ecology at the Biological Intelligence (BI) Lab, Southern Cross University in Perth, Australia. Her main research is broadly focusing on key aspects of the ecological processes by which organisms are able to gather information on the variable conditions of their surrounding environment in order to thrive. In collaboration with various disciplines across the Sciences and the Humanities, her research aims at expanding our perception of animals, plants and more generally Nature. In the process of learning how to do this, she has pioneered the brand-new research field of plant bioacoustics and extended the concept of cognition to plants, re-igniting the discourse on plant subjectivity, sentience and ethical standing.“Not all who wander are lost” - Goethe“The soul has an absolute and unforgiving need for regular excursions into enchantment” - Thomas MooreImaginal Inspirations is hosted by David Lorimer, Programme Director of the Scientific and Medical Network and Chair of the Galileo Commission, an academic movement dedicated to expanding the evidence base of a science of consciousness. Are our scientific assumptions justified? In this episode we're going to be examining the assumptions of Western Science. All science is based on assumptions. In order to isolate systems in experiments and standardise measurements of the target data, other variables need to be pinned down so scientists can form precise mathematical models, that can then be repeated accurately in the peer review process. Today we're going to look at these assumptions, and establish if they indeed have become standard, fixed and unquestioned as some critics claim. One of those critics is Cambridge educated biologist Rupert Sheldrake, who gave a TED talk in 2013 about the assumptions of western science, which was banned by TED's anonymous board of scientific advisors for not being a ‘fair description of scientific assumptions'. Far from quieting the controversy, the ban caused outcries of censorship, and the ripped video was seen many millions of times on You Tube, probably many times more than had it been left to stand as one scientists opinion. Today I want to examine just how fair his description was. To help us examine his claims is one of Rupert's old friends and supporters, a specialist in the history and philosophy of science, an author and the program director of the Scientific and Medical Network, David Lorimer. He is also President of Wrekin Trust and Chief Consultant of Character Education Scotland. He is also a former President of the Swedenborg Society, and Vice-President of the International Association for Near-Death Studies. Originally a merchant banker then a teacher of philosophy and modern languages at Winchester College, he is the author and editor of over a dozen books, most recently ‘The Protein Crunch' (with Jason Drew) and ‘A New Renaissance', and out this year his new book ‘a quest for wisdom'. He is the originator of the Inspire-Aspire Values Poster Programmes, which this year involved over 25,000 young people. The Prayer of Saint Francis:Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.Where there is hatred, let me bring love.Where there is offence, let me bring pardon.Where there is discord, let me bring union.Where there is error, let me bring truth.Where there is doubt, let me bring faith.Where there is despair, let me bring hope.Where there is darkness, let me bring your light.Where there is sadness, let me bring joy.O Master, let me not seek as muchto be consoled as to console,to be understood as to understand,to be loved as to love, for it is in giving that one receives,it is in self-forgetting that one finds,it is in pardoning that one is pardoned,it is in dying that one is raised to eternal life. Imaginal Inspirations is hosted by David Lorimer, Programme Director of the Scientific and Medical Network and Chair of the Galileo Commission, an academic movement dedicated to expanding the evidence base of a science of consciousness. Imaginal cells are responsible for the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into a butterfly, which is the Greek symbol for the soul. These cells are dormant in the caterpillar but at a critical point of development they create the new form and structure which becomes the butterfly.scientificandmedical.net galileocommission.orgbeyondthebrain.org Works and links mentioned:Touched by the Light: Exploring Spiritually Transformative Experiences. Federico Faggin has led what he calls four lives: as a physicist, engineer and inventor, entrepreneur, and author. He developed the MOS silicon gate technology at Fairchild (1968) and designed the world's first microprocessor at Intel (1971). Faggin also founded and led Zilog, Synaptics, and other high-tech companies. The Zilog Z80 microprocessor (1976), and the Z8 microcontroller (1978) are still in volume production in 2021. At Synaptics he pioneered the Touchpad (1994) and the Touchscreen (1999), - solutions that have revolutionized the way we interface with mobile devices.Federico has received many prizes and awards in the United States, Europe, and Japan. These include the Marconi Prize (1988), the Kyoto Prize for Advanced Technology (1997), and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation (2009), from President Barack Obama. In 1996, Faggin was inducted in the National Inventor's Hall of Fame. He has also received many honorary degrees in Computer Science and Electronic EngineeringFederico is currently president of the Federico and Elvia Faggin Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the scientific study of consciousness, an interest that has become a passionate full-time activity. In 2019, Federico published his autobiography SILICON, through Mondadori, Italy's premier book publisher, where it has been a bestseller. A free webinar on May 15, 2021, features some of the scientists. https://scientificandmedical.net/events/gayle-kimball/ Gayle Kimball interviewed 65 visionary scientists, leaders in the Consciousness Movement, to learn what their research findings reveal about reality. She also asked about their personal development to discover why they're so brave as they challenge the dominant materialist paradigm. The three books in the Mysteries Trilogy explore how consciousness shapes reality, enables healing and provides access to knowledge from beyond the physical senses. The visionary scientists conclude that we are more than our physical bodies with more potential than we realize and that science needs to expand to account for consciousness. Common themes that surfaced about these pioneers indicate that the visionary scientists are highly intelligent and did well in school and university, as you would expect. The majority were first-born in their families (35 compared to 26 latter-born). Most of the US scientists grew up on the East or West Coast or live there now, with a few exceptions, such as some born in the Midwestern states like Ohio. Others grew up in the UK or Canada and one each in Germany, Brazil and the Netherlands (Bernardo Kastrup), Italy, or Greece. Some are first-generation with parents from India, Latvia, Palestine, and Ireland, demonstrating the rich contributions provided by immigrant families. Some had health or family problems in their youth that motivated their search for understanding. Some of the visionary scientists had unexpected and transformative mystical experiences, like physicians John Ryan* and Richard Moss,* physicist Jude Currivan,* psychologist Steve Taylor,* and linguist J.J. Hurtak.* For a few, an NDE was transformative, such as for Eben Alexander,* Joyce Hawkes, and Marilyn Mandela Schlitz.* Family influences included visionary mothers for James Carpenter,* David Lorimer,* Judith Swack,* Christine Simmonds-Moore* and John Kruth,* or an influential sibling for Marjorie Woollacott,* David Muehsam,* Mary Rose Barrington,* and Larry Burk.* Psychedelic drugs influenced scientists like Susan Blackmore* and David Luke.* Having his “bad back” healed by a man he met while lifeguarding at a swimming pool led William Bengston* to research healing, and an injury led Richard Hammerschlag* to study acupuncture. Overall, curiosity about reality and the willingness to study the data was the main motivation to follow the evidence, however much in conflict with the materialist belief system.
When the groundbreaking 17th century scientist Galileo Galilei looked through the telescope that he himself had constructed he saw Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s moons. He understood that the planets were orbiting the sun. This completely upended the church-dominated worldview of the time, and other scholars refused to even look through the telescope, because they ”knew” what Galileo said he had seen could not be true. Galileo’s ideas were so revolutionary that he ended up being suspected of heresy. Today it is mainstream science that doesn’t dare to look through the telescope, figuratively, and this time the ”heresy” is to claim that consciousness is not produced by the brain. Galileo’s example inspired the founders of the Galileo Commission to name it after him. This project of the Scientific and Medical Network, a worldwide professional community, aims to expand the scope of science by crossing the border to spirituality. At the core lies the notion that consciousness is nonphysical. ”The way science has developed, the outer is considered primary. Matter is primary. So anything inner or in the mind or consciousness is to be explained by the primacy of matter”, says David Lorimer, head of the steering committee of the Galileo Commission. ”But what is very clear is that science also depends on consciousness. Theories and structures are produced by consciousness. Planck, Schrödinger, Pauli and others realized that you can't take consciousness out of the equation. You can't close the loop without including consciousness.” Lorimer began his career as a merchant banker but ”pressed the eject button” at the age of 24 and entered a world of literature, poetry and science. He has written or edited over a dozen books, with titles like ”The Spirit of Science”, ”Thinking beyond the Brain” and ”A quest for Wisdom”. The Swedish scientist and mystic Emanuel Swedenborg was an early source of inspiration, and David Lorimer has been the president of the Swedenborg society. Nowadays there is all sorts of evidence from experiences which are often called metaphysical, like out of body experiences during episodes of clinical brain death, precognitions and clairvoyance, which more than indicates that the idea of material primacy is wrong. But to challenge it is still controversial. Why is it so hard for scientists to shift their viewpoint? ”The power of the mechanistic metaphor is huge and goes back to the 17th century. Newton's universe is a clockwork. We now know it isn't true, but it is powerful. We have a metaphysical battle going on here”, says Lorimer ”The difficulty is the entrenched view and the fact that this entrenched view is regarded as scientific rather than philosophical. A vast majority of scientists don't know that they are making assumptions about consciousness and the brain. They just think it's a fact that consciousness is produced by the brain.” But what is credible and plausible changes with the advancement in knowledge, David points out. ”Our job is to make these areas more credible and acceptable. It’s an expansion. There’s nothing to be afraid of.” ”The problems of our species are not going to be solved by a continuation of materialism and consumerism. We need a spiritual awakening so that we understand that we are all deeply connected and deeply embedded and connected with natural ecosystems. There is one life, one mind, one planet.” David Lorimer’s website: https://www.davidlorimer.co.uk/ Galileo Commission’s website: https://galileocommission.org/
Dr. Vasilieios Basios is a senior researcher at the Physics of Complex Systems Department of the University of Brussels, where he conducts interdisciplinary research on self-organisation and emergence in complex matter as well as on aspects of the foundations of complex systems. We first met in the early 1990s in Greece where a number of pioneering meetings on a science of consciousness were arranged by his mentor and our mutual friend Emilios Bouratinos, author of the seminal work Science, Objectivity and Consciousness. During his formative years Vasili worked within the team of Ilya Prigogine (Nobel laureate and honorary SMN Member) at the Solvay Institutes for Physics and Chemistry in Brussels. He is interested in the history of ideas in science and their role in the transformation of science beyond the prevailing mechanistic world-view. As a board member of the Scientific & Medical Network, he also maintains a keen interest in contemporary research avenues that have started to lead us to a new renaissance, concerned with the renewal of a “re-enchanted” nature. Vasili is also a Member of the Steering Group of the Galileo Commission.
