Kabat-Zinn on the nitty gritty practicalities of starting a practice, being fully present with no agenda, and letting go of “the story of me.”Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, is professor of medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Back in the 1970s, he came up with something called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, or MBSR, which is a secular way of teaching Buddhist meditation. He's written many books, including Full Catastrophe Living; Wherever You Go, There You Are; and Coming to Our Senses. His latest book is called Mindfulness Meditation for Pain Relief. In this episode we talk about:The nitty gritty practicalities of starting a practiceHow he's learned to be more relaxed about his practice—including advocating for meditating in bed How to practice being fully present with no agenda How investigating your motivations—something most people don't do— can help you be more mindful How to practice letting go of “the story of me”Related Episodes:Tripping Out with a Legend: Jon Kabat-Zinn on Pain vs. Suffering, Rethinking Your Anxiety, and the Buddha's Teaching in a Single SentenceJon Kabat-Zinn | Meditation as a Love AffairJon Kabat-Zinn, Creator of Mindfulness-Based Stress ReductionSign up for Dan's weekly newsletter hereFollow Dan on social: Instagram, TikTokTen Percent Happier online bookstoreSubscribe to our YouTube ChannelOur favorite playlists on: Anxiety, Sleep, Relationships, Most Popular EpisodesFull Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/tph/podcast-episode/jon-kabat-zinn-2024See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
21 min Jon Kabat- Zinn is today's resource. Kabat-Zinn is a professor emeritus of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He received a Ph.D. in molecular biology for MIT in 1971. He is one of the earlier people in the health field to recognize the adverse effects of stress on health. His book Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain and Illness (1991) leads today's conversation into this resource. Full Catastrophe Living - the title of his book, Pierre claims is the title of his, Pierre's, life. Maureen mentions how Kabat-Zinn had to prevail with his editor to keep the word “catastrophe” in the book title. Seems appropriate for these days and our lives. Kabat-Zinn set up The Center of Mindfulness at Mass. Winner of all kinds of awards, Kabat-Zinn was a leader in bringing the body into the health equation, and also into mindfulness space. It's not all in your mind, and the solutions are not all in your mind. There are complimentary effects in healing the whole person. Where Ever You Go, There You Are - another title of Kabat-Zinn's. And here you are! Reading and listening to this podcast. We're glad you are here. Since we are in mental awareness month, I thought about approaching this exact topic here on the channel. Normally I wouldn't approach such high and dense topics since I only feel like I generalize a lot, even if the information comes from literature, articles, reviews, institutions, and international organizations that deal with the issue. We explored what does Mental Health mean for us (as I asked you), some definitions of the most commonly used terms (such as anxiety, gaslighting), some trends in mental health awareness between 1993 and 2023 (30 years), and some applicable methods on how to make our day better if we feel down or in a bad mood. Before I go, here's the most common definition I could find about Mental health, as defined in the field of psychology: "Mental health refers to a person's emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It encompasses how individuals think, feel, and behave, and it influences how they handle stress, relate to others, and make choices." I hope this episodes lives up to the expectations! Thank you all for being understanding and empathic

A brief follow-up to Episode 9. A reflection on some of the ways I fostered a healthy relationship to self, and how that was necessary for engaging with the enneagram of personality as a channel for growth. Before you deconstruct your ego you have to build a robust relationship to self so you have somewhere to stand while you do it. I don't mean developing a static sense of a static self—quite the opposite. It's about developing a dynamic and ever-evolving set of practices and perspectives concerning Self, your selves' observable behaviors, acceptance and change. Now is the best time to start. Begin, continue, begin again. Mentioned in this episode: - The Avett Brothers band and their song Shame - Noting and labeling practice to get to know one's internal processes (a practice I learned as taught by Shinzen Young) - The refractory period of an emotion Self-compassion (particularly the work of Kristin Neff) - Ellen Langer's (very American) definition of mindfulness as a flexible cognitive state in which one is able to perceive and process new information - A popular, secular Buddhist definition of mindfulness as a state of intentional and nonjudgmental attention to the present moment (I think this may have originated with Jon Kabat-Zinn, whose book Full-Catastrophe Living was one of my most powerful introductions to formal meditation practice; I can't recommend his work highly enough) - Barbara Fredrickson's broaden and build theory - The field of Behavior Analysis and the book Self-Directed Behavior by David L. Watson and Roland G. Tharp (I used the tenth edition) for changing behavior - Sam Harris' Waking Up app Let me know what resonates and what you want to hear more about.
“With mindfulness, you can establish yourself in the present in order to touch the wonders of life that are available in that moment.”- Thich Nhat Hanh In this episode, we will discuss one depressive disorder and one anxiety disorder to give you an idea of the symptoms and criteria for diagnosis as we dive deeper into the concept of self-awareness so we can reap the treasures that life has to offer us on a daily basis. I will incorporate some of my knowledge of the effects of Yoga and include a sequence to stimulate or regulate the nervous system. Practical episode outcomes: Explain how yoga can assist depression and anxiety, discuss factors that affect personal growth, the three levels of self-awareness, and understand and apply ways to raise self-awareness. Mindfulness teaches us how to deal with life's challenges in a calmer manner. It is not the answer to all of life's problems but rather it allows us to see our problems more clearly, be in touch with our body and be able to respond in a discerning way rather than reacting with high emotion. It is a particular way of paying attention and looking deeply into oneself. It teaches us how to let go of thoughts and emotions that don't serve us. This episode will focus on understanding the concept of mindfulness, help you recognize the importance of self-reflection and introduce you to two mindfulness practice. Practical episode outcome: understand the concept, recognize where it fits in and the general benefit, prepare supportive self-reflective tools. Experience a breathwork practice. Clinical psychology and psychodynamic theory suggest that many of our beliefs, opinions, perceptions, and ideas arise from our past experiences, whether these are conscious or subconscious. It seems to be a common belief that adverse experiences in childhood can carry through to our adult lives and affect the way we relate to others and function in our personal and professional lives. It allows us to live in this moment, the present moment. We often think about the past or worry about the future all the while missing out on what's in front of us-here and now. Our brain's default mode network is an incessant stream of thoughts. There is an automaticity to so much of what we do. We often are living our lives on auto pilot maybe doing the dishes, showering, or driving a familiar route. Have you ever driven on a route for the 100th time and suddenly you notice a beautiful tree and ask yourself was that always there? Noticing the beauty around us brings us to the present moment, connects us with nature, our surroundings, and increases our happiness. The sooner we realize and acknowledge our tendency for automaticity and incessant thought streams, the more we can control ourselves and not get lost in the experience of this meaning getting sucked in. One of the first steps to being mindful, is to increase our awareness. Of our 5 senses, of our body, our breath, and what's around us. Here and now ot tether ourselves to the present moment through our mind body connection. Application of mindfulness: Savoring the good moments, hugging your child Being present with children Getting yourself out of a negative catastrophization spiral How do we do this: Remind ourselves There is a body-feel the weight of gravity and points of contact Here and now. Then we can shift our focus to our breath for a few seconds they serve as an anbchor. Provide us with stability Allow us to feel stable amidst any and all chaos. Meditation practice over time leads to mindfulness and a greater mind body connection. This process gives us distance from our thoughts and feelings. Eventually, we will get sucked into our own inner drama less and less leading to a more balanced life experience." Jackson MacKenzie BENEFITS of mindfulness Less stress Less anxiety Lower blood pressure Lower heart rate Better sleep Improved focus and concentration Increased feelings of wellbeing or happiness Help us with our constant need to be stimulated, phone addicitons Helpful books Full Catastrophe Living and Whereever You Go There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn The Art Of Mindfulness by Thich Naht Hahn Mistakes in meditation: People think that by meditating regularly, they will find peace Meditating by itself isn't the answer People assume they cannot meditate People think there is a "right way" to practice mindfulness meditation It's not actually that simple You have to apply your practice to real life Mindfulness has empowered me to savor the good and ordinary moments, contributing to my overall happiness. This week's conversation is with Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, a Professor of Medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where in 1995, he founded the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society and in 1979, its world-renowned Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Clinic. Jon's research between 1979 and 2002 focused on mind/body interactions for healing, on various clinical applications of mindfulness meditation training for people with chronic pain and/or stress-related disorders, on the effects of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) on the brain and how it processes emotions, particularly under stress. He is the author of 14 books, including the bestsellers Full Catastrophe Living, Wherever You Go, There You Are, and Mindfulness for Beginners. His books and guided meditation programs describe meditation practice in such commonsensical, relevant, and compelling terms that mindfulness meditation practice has become a way of life for thousands of people. Jon's work has contributed to a growing movement of mindfulness into mainstream institutions such as medicine, psychology, health care, neuroscience, schools, higher education, business, social justice, criminal justice, prisons, the law, technology, government, and professional sports. Over 700 hospitals and medical centers around the world now offer MBSR. Jon lectures and leads mindfulness workshops and retreats around the world. I've been fortunate enough to attend several of them, and I can't even begin to express the impact Jon has had on my life. Not only does he teach and guide in a special way, he is a special human being. In this episode we will be delving into how we can start to let go of overthinking and instead start furthering our ability to pay attention in the present and cultivate the grounding attitude with four simple steps while also looking at gratitude. I will share some words of wisdom from my favorite mindfulness guru's and take you through a guided meditation. Challenge: Today I would like to challenge you to add to your daily reflection journal, write down three things from your day today that you are grateful for. Try to be as specific as you can about what it is and why you feel grateful. If you continue with this practice, try to vary what you write every day as this has been shown as having a greater effect. The TTC Life Raft: Empowering you through loss or infertility
I had the pleasure of chatting to the wonderful Naomi Woolfson in today's episode. We share a helpful, actionable conversation with lots of stuff you can take away and use right now to start feeling better straight away. Be sure to visit Naomi's website to download her free “3 ways to stress less and enhance fertility using the mind-body link.” Which includes the first chapter of her upcoming book, a three minute reset MP3 and a beautiful guided visualisation. Naomi Woolfson, of Embrace Fertility, is a therapist who specialises in supporting women through trying to conceive, fertility treatments and then pregnancy and birth following infertility. She and her partner went through almost 4 years of infertility, IUI's, IVF, anxiety, surgery and a miscarriage before they went on to conceive both of their ginger children naturally! For the past eight years, Naomi has worked to raise the level of understanding about an infertility diagnosis – from the debilitating emotional impact and the overwhelming feelings of sadness, helplessness and grief, to the simple yet powerful mind-body techniques that provide relief and build resilience during this highly emotive time while greatly increasing your chances of conceiving. In this episode, we speak about: • How some on this journey reach rock-bottom early on rather than near the end • Finding mindfulness and other support techniques through books, people, and synchronicities • Practicing EFT and supporting others whilst going through fertility treatments • The story behind Naomi's choice to call her business “Embrace Fertility” • Regaining control and personal power through recognition of the choice we have over our thoughts and emotions • Naomi walking us through the “Yes, Please” technique that you can begin incorporating today • The items in Naomi's Life Raft • and more! Powerful Quotes: Instead of striving for: Pregnancy is the goal. The goal is for you to find yourself again, and to release the anxiety, stress, and overwhelm. That book [Full Catastrophe Living] was saying to me, it wasn't the fact I was infertile that was causing the anxiety and panic attacks. It was the thoughts I was having about it. So then I started and it was 3 rounds of tapping and saying statements, and I felt a shift. I felt vividly different to how I had five minutes before. Another moment where I felt that this is some kind of magic or I need to understand more You can't pick what thoughts come into your head, but you get to pick the next thought and what you do with that. It's very much about finding the thing that does work for you, and realizing that on different days different things will work for you. There's a common misconception that mindfulness can reduce stress. What mindfulness actually does is increase your stress resiliency, which is how we respond to stressors in our environment. Stress will never disappear — it's a part of life — but through meditation and mindfulness, we can learn to control our reactions to it, making our response to stress less extreme. The book Kessonga mentioned is Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn. You can also get a crash course on meditation and mindfulness in Andy's book, Get Some Headspace. Are you aware of all the common holistic therapies out there? Which modality would be best suited to your client's specific needs? What are the modalities that require a lot more intense training and supervision? IN THIS PODCAST:Mindfulness/Grounding Breathwork Guided imagery Meditation Yoga Reiki Aromatherapy 1. MINDFULNESS/GROUNDINGThis means being in the present moment, not worrying about the future or the past. You are just connecting to what is right here, right now. You can do this by: 5-4-3-2-1 technique (5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can touch, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste) Doing a body scan Internally asking what you need at that very moment 2. BREATHWORKBe extra careful with this modality, especially if you are working with someone who has experienced trauma. Have your clients see what works for them and practice it outside of therapy, as much as possible. 3. GUIDED IMAGERYUsing this in therapy can be very powerful and a common one to use could be to think about a safe place, imagery for relaxation. And this combined with breathwork can really make a big difference. 4. MEDITATIONThere are so many forms of meditation and as always, there is no right or wrong way. You have to experiment and practice to see what works. A few are: Mindfulness Transcendental movement based Mantra Loving kindness Progressive relaxation Zen Sound 5. YOGAThis is about helping the parasympathetic to engage, to settle down the nervous system, especially with anxiety. It can be broken down into grounding practices (helps with anxiety, stress, feeling hyped up) and energizing practices (helps with depression, trauma, dissociation). 6. REIKIEnergy healing helps physical, emotional, and spiritual issues. It comes from universal life energy force. It works with removing blockages and releasing negative energy. 7. AROMATHERAPYThis is using plant-based essential oils that help harmonize mind, body, and spirit and helps to heal. You can inhale using a diffuser, you can combine different essential oils to cater to different needs such as balance, motivation, or relaxation. It can also be used on your skin (mix with a carrier oil first). I don't know about you, but I felt a lot of anger, fear, and sadness while watching those horrifying images from the United States Capitol on Wednesday. So how do we handle this with some degree of equanimity? That's what we're going to talk about today. It's Friday, which is when we usually post bonus meditations or talks, but given the collective trauma we are living through -- both in the US and around the world -- we wanted to post a special episode. I'll be honest... as a journalist and as a meditation evangelist, I can't sit here and guarantee that everything's going to be alright. I suspect it will be, but -- really -- I don't know. What I do know, though, is that meditation -- taking care of your own mind -- will help you navigate this moment more skillfully. And if enough of us do this, it might impact the course of events. You know who agrees with me? Jon Kabat-Zinn. He's a towering figure in the world of meditation and mental health. He created Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, a way of teaching meditation that brought the practice into the secular mainstream and resulted in an explosion of scientific research demonstrating the benefits of the practice. Cathy Heller is igniting a movement of helping people everywhere find a deeper sense of purpose and encouraging us to make a soulful contribution to the world. In addition to being a wife + mother, Cathy is a business + life coach, musician, author and host of the wildly popular Don't Keep Your Day Job podcast. When I first asked Cathy to meet with me, I expected to spend the majority of our time sharing her expertise on how to shift into more meaningful, fulfilling work. And then life happened... the world is now in a radically different place and yet I find this a divine appointment. Cathy often says “purpose is the opposite of depression” and she is truly lifting up others to be the happiest version of themselves. Today, Cathy shares her story of courageously taking control of her destiny and how you can, too. SHOW NOTES: Growing up, Cathy was surrounded by trauma, violence and instability - leading her to question her worth. As an aspiring singer-songwriter, Cathy moved to Los Angeles + landed a record deal before being dropped a few months later. She viewed this as validation to just "grow up, get a job + be unhappy." Is there any other way I can do music? Unhappy selling commercial real-estate, Cathy learned that songwriters license music for film, TV + advertisements. For a decade, Cathy wrote songs for popular shows including The Office, SNL and Parks and Rec, plus brands including Coca-Cola, American Airlines. McDonald's and Old Navy. Using her personal expertise + experience, Cathy began offering online classes for aspiring songwriters that evolved into a significant revenue stream. Encouraged by the success of her online courses, Cathy launched the Don't Keep Your Day Job podcast that inspires listeners to find more purpose in their life and get paid to do what they love full-time by interviewing creative entrepreneurs on their success. "We are sitting on a gold. What we are missing is seeing the possibility. We're missing momentum which only comes from taking action." "There are so many special, holy people in the world. If you dig long enough you'll weed your way through the people with an agenda and you'll find the real ones." You're a masterpiece. You are a piece of the master. We need you. God doesn't make extras. Those powerful words from Rabbi David Aaron ignited Cathy's calling. "The opposite of depression is not happiness. The opposite of depression is purpose + belonging." "Everybody will say all the reasons why something won't work and the entrepreneur finds the one reason it will. That's true also about people of faith." Cathy sees hope that the coronavirus pandemic will be a gift and an opportunity to emerge more fulfilled + happier. Pivot into seeing the possibilities instead of succumbing to fear. Life is 10% what happens and 90% how you deal with it. Cathy's grandmother overcame the Holocaust + the Depression and chose to look for the possibilities. In today's turbulent + uncertain world, Cathy encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to start with what's possible + take action. Stop to feel it, give yourself compassion, take action. Cathy stresses the importance of learning to self-regulate, being mindful of our feelings + mental wellbeing as the first step in seeing possibilities. Cathy has hope that the current state of the world is an opportunity to unify + support others. Listen to Cathy Heller's podcast Don't Keep Your Day Job. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn and The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Trust. I trust the world, my abilities + my business but I don't think I trust that I'm seen + loved by my husband because of what I've been through. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? My computer because I love being able to encourage others. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? My grandfather Ben, my mom's dad. He died right before I was born and I've always felt he's watching over me. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? My grandma would say, "Before you do something, think what someone else woke up with today." 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? You are going to be okay. You have a huge role to play in the world and please know you're more than enough exactly how you are. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Cathy made me believe that I had so much value and because of that I gave to others and lifted them. To help combat fear, isolation and other uncertainty around coronavirus, I created a 21-day challenge to inspire our community to focus on what they can control and to remain ferociously optimistic that their best remains ahead. How do we keep going even when everything seems impossible? When life just keeps throwing problem after problem at us, how do we find the strength to go to work, take care of the kids, and to keep doing the things we need to do, when we really just want to curl up under the covers? We talk about Amy’s health challenge over the past year, the inspiration she found in certain books, and how learning to be with our feelings can help us work through them and come out the other side. Books mentioned: Man's Search for Meaning, The Power of Now, Full Catastrophe Living

I was feeling super sad this morning and it was starting to affect me physically. It was triggered by looking at a cat's tail plant during my walk this morning. It reminded me of when I would pluck one of the stalks for my daughter, Ava, while I would push her in her stroller when she was little girl. I remembered when my younger daughter, Annabelle, would tell me, "Daddy, don't step on the lines!" Which made me feel even more sad missing those times I'd walk with her and play the "don't step on the lines" game. When I got back home from the walk, I saw their baby pictures all over the house which made me feel even more sad! Later, while driving to my client's house this morning, the feeling of sadness started to overwhelm me! I started to feel extremely tired, weak, and sleepy. That was when I remembered a concept that I learned from John Kabat-Zinn, the author of The Full Catastrophe Living. He says that we should become an observer to our own feelings rather than fall victim to them. He points out that if we're going to feel them anyways we might as well really feel them. Once you begin to take notice and observe the feelings like a scientist would, the overwhelming emotions lose their grip on you. They don't feel so strong and all-consuming anymore, and you begin to feel better. So I tried this while driving to work this morning, and now I really do feel better. I hope this concept helps you as much as it helps me. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/junthegroomer/support

An industry to commoditize or should we pay closer attention? Guest Wendy Lund is one of about three people in North America with a Masters of Science in Mindfulness studies and about one of 100 globally who hold this degree. Wendy has helped pioneer programs for those who engage trauma in their work to help reduce their risk of psychological injury in the line of duty and recently, with her company Wellth Management, she has created programs for the corporate sector - also a place where people experience trauma. "Mindfulness is a simple yet powerful construct that asks, if you can you pay attention on purpose in a particular way, thoughtfully, without being somewhere else and without judging." Links: Wellth Management - Wendy Lund, RN, BScN, MSc and CEO brings mindfulness to the corporate sector. Jon Kabat-Zinn - Doctor, teacher, thought leader (literally!) and author of many books including Full Catastrophe Living. Vicktor Frankl - Neurologist, psychiatrist, "Father" of logotherapy - a form of existential analysis - and author of Man's Search for Meaning, the best-selling book and account of his life as an inmate in a concentration camp. It is in this seemingly unbearable arena that he explains how to find meaning in even the most difficult situations in one's life. "Can you learn to be grateful for the difficult moments in your life?...In hindsight often we can see that great moments of difficulty and tragedy in our lives are actually the template for post-traumatic growth."

From page 54 of 'Wherever You Go, There You Are' - "Letting go really refers to choosing to become transparent to the strong pull of our own likes and dislikes, and of the unawareness that draws us to cling to them. To be transparent requires that we allow fears and insecurities to play themselves out in the field of full awareness. - Try it out just for fun. See for yourself whether letting go when a part of you really wants to hold on doesn't bring a deeper satisfaction than clinging."The book, Wherever You Go,There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PHD and it inspired me to make some changes.Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, is internationally known for his work as a scientist, writer, and meditation teacher engaged in bringing mindfulness into the mainstream of medicine and society. How do you overcome diversity? How do you get back that sense of self-worth and self-confidence? How do change and become empowered? For strength and nutrition coach Maria Marklove, it was through mindfulness, meditation, and physical training. Listen as she shares her inspiring story, and learn how you, too, can take control of your life. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Maria’s life story Where Maria drew support and inspiration from What it was like for Maria to try to make a positive change for herself The initial first steps that Maria took towards changing her life The mindfulness-based stress reduction method What Maria got from her mindfulness and meditation practices How physical training helped Maria overcome anorexia How being physically strong helped Maria feel mentally strong, and the difference that made to her life Some of the things that Maria does to take herself to her discomfort zone Key Takeaways: The thoughts that you’re constantly thinking about aren’t necessarily the truth. They are more like opinions, beliefs, or habitual responses. Sometimes pain can be the catalyst for change. When the pain becomes too much for you to handle, you simply can’t continue to live your life that way. You can’t change other people in the same way that other people can’t change you. Change has to come from within. If you’re strongly attached to negative thoughts, you’re going to have a very different life and outlook than if you see them for what they are, which is just noise. Your comfort zone is so small and everything else is outside of that. If you want to grow, if you want to make progress in your life, you have to push outside your comfort zone. Action Steps: Focus on the creative solutions to your problem. Choose the thoughts that you pay attention to. Let go of useless thoughts, no matter how many times they come up. Start with small steps to go out of your comfort zone. Don’t fake it until you make it. Do it until you make it. Maria said: “If you want to change your happiness and your self-belief and your confidence and therefore, your life, you have to change your mindset. You’ve got to direct your focus towards things that are helpful.” “Thoughts are kind of like clouds in the sky. And you can just be aware of the clouds, you don’t have to be inside the cloud… And you can ask if these thoughts, these clouds if they’re actually useful. And if they’re not useful, you can decide to let it go.” Thanks for listening! You may have noticed we talk a lot about meditation and mindfulness on this blog. One of our readers tagged me on Facebook and asked if I could explain more about my own meditation technique. So here we go... But first, what is the difference between mindfulness and meditation? Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present - with all of your senses tuned into the present moment. So your mind is NOT wandering somewhere else; you are not thinking of your fight with your friend, or your latest problem, or how excited you are about your next trip, or what kind of bracelet you're going to make at your jewelry workshop, or imagining yourself in Bali... and so on. Nope. You are not thinking or feeling or emoting about anything other than right HERE, right NOW. So if you're at your barn, you're smelling the hay and manure, you're feeling the rough wood hay feeder, you're watching the movement of your horse's muzzle as she chomps hay, you're hearing the sound of your horse chewing, you're feeling the warmth of the sun on your shoulder. ALL your senses (sight, smell, touch, hearing, perhaps taste) are fully present and engaged in THIS moment. And only this moment. If you feel drawn to Mindfulness, then any book by Jon Kabat-Zinn is great - my favorites are Full Catastrophe Living and Wherever You Go, There You Are. But isn't meditation also about being fully present in the moment? And turning off the monkey-mind or chatter-brain? As Kathryn Remati says: "Both practices are life skills that give you the tools to access inner peace, which is already inside of you. Both rely on the ability to be focused entirely on the present moment. (We can’t experience peace when we regret the past or worry about the future.) Both practices offer a way to increase happiness and decrease suffering." So yes, mindfulness IS actually one way of meditating - because it is reining in the monkey-mind and keeping it focused on ONE moment. But it is also a separate kind of practice because mindfulness keeps you fully present, whereas meditation allows you to leave (or transcend) earth-time and drop into a different kind of space altogether. Meditation Meditation can lead you out of your chattering brain and into the space in-between thoughts, using a variety of techniques. For example, Transcendental Meditation (Hindu origin) involves focusing on ONE mantra, or chant. Om namah shivaya is a popular mantra. So you would just say that one phrase, Om namah shivaya, over and over again, while sitting quietly, eyes closed, and breathing into your belly. Eventually - and for some people this can take weeks or months - you will drop into the space between those words, where nothing exists but the pregnant silence of the universe. This is when you leave the time-space continuum of earth, and when you come back from the silence, you realize that 1 hour has passed, but it felt like only 5 minutes. With Zen Meditation you focus on your breath while your body is sitting in a certain posture. Your thoughts are allowed to come and go, but if you find yourself actually thinking about one of your thoughts, then you need to pull your attention back to your breath. So instead of your focus being on a mantra, it is on your breath - breathe through your noise and keep your mouth closed. When you're breathing correctly, you will establish a long, deep, natural rhythm and hear a sound upon your exhale that is similar to pranayama breathing in yoga. Again, when your focus on your breath becomes complete, you will drop into the stillness and time will cease to exist. Although this stillness-bliss experience can also take a fairly long time to happen, the benefits to your brain functioning and stress levels are immediate. Here's a super-short video by journalist Dan Harris that shows you how simple meditation can be: Is there an easier way? Having done years of both mantra and breath meditation (for up to 7 hours/day for months at a time...

“Hurrying and delaying are alike ways of trying to resist the present.” - Alan Watts What’s the conversation you are having with yourself right now? Maybe you’re thinking about an email you wrote earlier, or need to write later. Maybe you’re thinking about an ever-growing todo list, and feeling the anxiety well up within. Or maybe you are doing all of the above. When you stop to really notice, it’s amazing how many conversations we are having internally at any given time. The most important conversation we have is with ourselves. What are you saying right now? Congressman Tim Ryan is our guest for Episode 38 of the Reboot Podcast. Tim is a special guy, and not just because he’s a congressman, and not just because he’s from Ohio - though that's pretty great too - but because he’s committed to bringing heart, humanity, mindfulness and a long term focus into a space that doesn’t always welcome it: government. In this conversation (originally recorded in November), Tim shares his journey to mindfulness, his ongoing practice in noticing his own inner conversation, and his commitment to mindfully planting seeds for the future and having the patience to watching them grow. Sunny Wright was a busy wife and mother, a highly educated PR pro married to a doctor. But her life was, in her words, a full catastrophe. For 35 years, Wright lived as “society wanted her to live.” She was a high achiever in every aspect. Until it all came crashing down. In 2009, Wright had a stress induced breakdown. She looked in the mirror and saw legions in her hairline. Wright had developed a rare form of the autoimmune deficiency disease shingles which came with deep depression and debilitating fatigue. She was so sick, she actually thought she may not survive. Turns out being admitted to the hospital was the best thing that could have happened to her. Forced to stop and find some quiet within herself, Wright felt a calm that she hadn't felt in years — maybe ever. “I spent my life in the noise of society and I was very, very busy and suddenly when it got very quiet, my heart was telling me, you made yourself ill, you can make yourself better.” Wright knew stress had brought on her condition. She picked up a book called Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn and began to learn how to live a mindful life. “Mindfulness is being in this moment without judgement,” she explains. “It's all about awareness. It's a group of lessons where we learn to sit quietly and examine our thoughts.” Not only did this exploration of mindfulness help Wright with her health, it changed everything about her life. “It's been a miracle,” she says. “This is my purpose and my mission now. I can't even recognize the person who I was six years ago.” Wright wondered why she had not learned about mindfulness early on. She became convinced that if children were introduced to the concept, it would be life changing for them — just as it was for her. Wright founded a non-profit organization based in Scottsdale, Arizona called Mindfulness First. The response has been incredible and one of America's largest health care providers is now sponsoring the effort. Wright and her team now go into schools to teach children what it is to live a mindful life: to help them develop coping skills, empathy, and focus. “We've been overwhelmed in school districts. We have a waiting list of schools,” she says. Currently they are working at a Phoenix area school, Crockett Elementary, where there is a high population of homeless and refugee children. Each school they go in to, Wright says, the culture shift is tangible and the results are undeniable. She points to a drop in suspensions as one example. “In every major university in America, mindfulness is being studied and the results are just conclusive at this point.” According to Wright, “It reduces bullying, violence, isolation, increases focus, grades and happiness.” Mindfulness is actually a pretty simple concept. It is choosing to accept this very moment the way it is; not living in the past, not living in the future, but bringing it all into this moment. Sunny Wright is determined to bring mindfulness to the masses with a focus on children who will lead the way in the future. “I would like them to think about how we can change the world. We have this amazing capacity within our very own bodies. I believe if every child was taught this we would have world peace. There is tremendous empathy created through mindfulness.” For more on Sunny Wright and Mindfulness First, visit www.mindfulnessfirst.org The post A Mindful Life: From Surviving to Success appeared first on Inspired Media 360 TV - Inform | Inspire | Engage.

Turning Point- a GPS for your Success with Host Judith L. Harrison Of course, many will recognize this show title as the title of a bestseller by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph. D. A mentor once told me I had to learn to love being out of control. This was shocking wisdom coming from a highly organized and self-disciplined individual guiding me on how to build a successful business. That sounded like a catastrophe to me… But, I think that first we get to learn from our stress and secondly, to know how to manage the inevitable, and thirdly how to discern between eustress versus distress. The breath is the foundation of mindfulness. In connecting deeply with the breath through formal sitting and informal attention practices, we come to encounter all our experiences with mindfulness and spacious awareness. In so doing, our relationship to our experience changes dramatically. We recover our ability to act from conscious awareness rather that passive reactivity. John Kabat Zinn states this most succinctly in his book, Full Catastrophe Living. "It is the very simplicity of the practice of mindfulness of breathing that gives it its power to disentangle us from the compulsive and habitual hold of the mind's many preoccupations. Yogis have known this for centuries. Breathing is the universal foundation for meditation practice."
