Do you have a goal to lose weight? If so, you're probably thinking about how you need to exercise more. And that can certainly help. But what about the 23 hours a day you're not at the gym? How much you move during those hours — from walking to the mailbox to fidgeting at your desk — can be just as important in winning the battle of the bulge. Here to explain the importance of what's called non-exercise activity thermogenesis, or NEAT, is Dr. James Levine, a professor, the co-director of the Mayo Clinic's Obesity Solutions Initiative, the inventor of the treadmill desk, and the author of Get Up!: Why Your Chair Is Killing You and What You Can Do About It. James explains how much more sedentary we are than we used to be and what happens to your body when, as the average American does, you spend two-thirds of your day sitting. He shares how doing the lightest kinds of physical activity, even standing more, can help you lose a significant amount of weight and improve other aspects of health, from your sleep to your mood. And we talk about how to easily incorporate more NEAT into your day.Resources Related to the PodcastRole of Nonexercise Activity Thermogenesis in Resistance to Fat Gain in Humans — James' overfeeding studyAoM Article: The Digestive Power of an After-Dinner WalkAoM Podcast #552: How to Optimize Your MetabolismAoM Article: The Importance of Building Your Daily Sleep Pressure

The World's Outraged by a Stolen Wombat… So Why Aren't the Vegans Rejoicing?? Written by Clare Mann at VeganPsychologist.com. “The public are horrified and saying this must be stopped. So why aren't vegans rejoicing that the masses appear to be concerned? Why don't we feel there is hope that the world is waking up?” Learn why in today's episode written by Vegan Psychologist Clare Mann. #vegan #plantbased #plantbasedbriefing #vystopia #animalabuse #cognitivedissonance ========================== Original post: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/worlds-outraged-stolen-wombat-so-why-arent-vegans-rejoicing-mann-w9enc Book: Vystopia The Anguish of Being Vegan in a Non-Vegan World: https://veganpsychologist.com/step/vystopia-book-landing/ Book: Myths of Choice - Why People Won't Change and What You Can Do About It: https://veganpsychologist.com/step/myths-of-choice-details/ ========================= Clare Mann is a vegan psychologist, communications skills trainer and the author of several books, including Vystopia: The Anguish of Being Vegan in a Non Vegan World. She became vegan 16 years ago, after realizing 30 years of vegetarianism was totally inadequate if I wanted to do everything possible to not use or exploit animals. The skills she acquired through a successful career as an organisational psychologist, university lecturer and speaker, are now applied to help vegans become confident, hopeful vegan conversationalists who are ushering in a kinder vegan world. Having lived with the Burden of Knowing vegans are so familiar with, she stood up to the medical world that diminishes our anguish as unnecessary. She therefore coined the phrase Vystopia and now helps vegans all over the world develop powerful ways to become vegan change makers. Visit us at shapedbydog.com Do dogs really test us? It can sure seem that way when a dog's behavior is not what we expect and they show inconsistency and fluctuations in what they do. My stance on this topic has changed over the years, and I'm sharing why, along with perspectives on why dogs might seem to be testing us, and the first thing I usually do if my dog surprises me with an unexpected response. In this episode, you'll hear: • My answer to the question: “Do our dogs test us?” • About my journey in dog training, including my experiences with different breeds and dog sports. • Why I believe dogs are not intentionally testing us, but rather responding to incomplete education or changing environments. • The importance of understanding the ABCs of dog training - antecedents, behavior, consequences - and how they influence dog behavior. • How to approach behavior when it's in flux vs. when it's fluent. • The role of curiosity in dog training and why I always strive to be a lifelong learner. • What I do when a trained behavior surprises me and goes back into flux. • Why reacting with correction may not be the fastest solution. • How adopting a mindset of compassion and curiosity can transform your relationship with your dog. Literatur: Jay M. About The GuestsACCESS LITERACY TEAMDorothy KardatzkeI live with my husband in Columbus, Ohio. I taught for more than 25 years in both general education classrooms and in classrooms for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Since 1997, when I was first trained in the English code, all my literacy instruction has been delivered using programs that are Orton-based. I left the classroom in 2018 to create space to write curriculum, and train/coach teachers. However, I will always be a teacher. It is who I am! I tutor little folks and big folks in literacy whenever I have the chance.I had a rather circuitous educational journey which offered me the opportunity to embark on what I do presently. I completed a double major in Elementary Education and Deaf Education from Augustana College. I later completed post-graduate work in Linguistics and Language Development at the University of South Dakota and Neuroanatomy at The Ohio State University.During leisure time, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, hiking, fishing, canoeing, camping and cross-country skiing.Melody FurnoMy husband and I live in Columbus, Ohio where I taught an Orton-based Method for literacy in Kindergarten and first grade classrooms for 19 years. Encountering struggling readers in the classroom motivated me to enroll in coursework and to research current information on reading disabilities and dyslexia to set up interventions in the classroom.Since leaving the classroom, I have used an Orton-based Method to train and consult teachers in literacy across the country and tutor struggling readers in 4th and 5th grades for Columbus Public Schools. I enjoy nature, fishing, hiking and biking. My special interest is to encourage faith-based ministries to play a part in addressing youth and adult illiteracy.
In life, friends come and go. Some friendships begin in childhood. Others form in adulthood. It's rare for a friendship to span decades or even a lifetime. But a long-term friendship is exactly what sustains prominent Minnesotans Resmaa Menakem and Keith Ellison.Listen back to the first episode in our Power Pairs series — conversations with Minnesotans you may know individually, but in the context of relationship, you get to know them in a fresh new way. Trauma expert and therapist Resmaa Menakem and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison have been close friends since they met in their 20s, long before their careers took off. They even hosted a community radio show together, on KMOJ in Minneapolis, for a decade. They tell MPR News host Angela Davis how they've leaned on each other in tough times.Guests: Resmaa Menakem is a longtime therapist in Minnesota and a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in the healing of racialized trauma. He's the author of his New York Times bestselling book, “My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies.” Earlier this year he released “Monsters in Love: Why Your Partner Sometimes Drives You Crazy―and What You Can Do About It.” Keith Ellison has served as Minnesota's attorney general since January 2019. He was the lead prosecutor in the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and led the team that convicted former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on a charge of second-degree unintentional murder. Do you know a ‘Power Pair?'Know two Minnesotans who have a close relationship and lean on each other for support in the work they do? Maybe they're married or siblings or best friends. They could be business partners or a parent/adult child dynamic duo. We want to hear their stories on MPR News with Angela Davis at 9 a.m. weekdays.Read more about our Power Pair series and submit your ideas here. Visit us at shapedbydog.com There are 14 canine myths commonly accepted as truths and I'm doing some serious debunking to separate fact from fiction. For example, have you heard the myth about “Doodles never shed”? It's a myth because it's genetics. If you breed a shedding breed to a non-shedding breed, we can't predict what we're going to get. Don't miss this one, because I'm “shedding” even more light on popular lore about dogs that too many people still believe. Enjoy! In this episode we're mythbusting: • Old dogs can't learn new tricks. • Puppies outgrow naughty behavior. • Show your dog who's the boss, alpha, pack leader. • Begin puppy training at six months old. • Dogs defy, grow stubborn or ignore you near tempting distractions. • Feeding scared dogs rewards fear. • Wagging tails means happy dogs. • Yawning dogs are tired dogs. • Good dogs tolerate children. • Puppies love hugs and cuddles. • Dogs only see in black and white. • Dogs admit they're wrong with guilty looks. • Rescue dogs are damaged. • Two puppies provide companionship for one another.
