The episode kicks off with the story of Jan Baptist van Helmont, a physician who conducted an experiment planting a five-pound baby willow tree in a 200-pound pot of soil, launching a sequence of events that solved the riddle of where trees come from, accelerated the Industrial Revolution that propelled us to our current state of ecological overshoot, and planted the seeds of our eventual salvation.   The narrative then takes us through the evolution of scientific thought, from the ancient Greek philosophers to the alchemists of the Middle Ages, and eventually to the pioneers of modern chemistry like Joseph Black and Antoine Lavoisier. We explore the concepts of phlogiston, fixed air, and the discovery of oxygen, shedding light on the gradual unraveling of the mysteries of the natural world. The episode also highlights the contributions of individuals like Joseph Priestley and Jan Ingenhousz, who made key observations about the role of plants in purifying air and the process of photosynthesis. These discoveries laid the foundation for our understanding of how plants breathe in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, shaping our knowledge of the interconnectedness of ecosystems. The episode wraps up with a brief segue into the concept of latent heat, as elucidated by Joseph Black, and its pivotal role in the development of steam engines. This technological advancement sparked the Industrial Revolution, which delivered previously unimaginable wealth to the world but pushed our planet to the brink of ecological collapse.  As the host, I aim to provide a comprehensive and engaging exploration of the historical milestones that have shaped our understanding of climate and biodiversity finance. By unraveling the untold story of the voluntary carbon market, I seek to dispel myths, challenge simplistic narratives, and foster a deeper appreciation for the complexities of environmental science. Join me on this enlightening journey through the annals of scientific discovery, as we uncover the threads that connect past breakthroughs to present-day challenges and solutions. Together, we can gain a deeper insight into the intricate web of relationships that sustain life on our bionic planet. Thank you for tuning in to Bionic Planet, where we explore the past to illuminate the path forward.

During his time in university, Joseph Black discovered a pivotal flaw in the current education to employment gap. Many of his peers either lacked the experience to go into their desired field after graduating, or had to leave school altogether due to the rising cost of living, so Joseph decided to create a platform to change that. As the Co-Founder & CEO of UniTaskr, Joseph built a platform connecting students with quick & reliable part-time work by providing tasks set by members of the local community. Join Joseph and Jim as they talk about building Joseph and his co-founder's vision of tackling the student financial crisis into a usable, successful platform. They'll get into mistakes and pivots made early on in the process, marketing strategies to grow the platform (Word on the street Gen-Z uses this platform called TikTok)and UniTaskr's evolution from local to global by focusing on the demand for highly skilled remote workers. 3 Key TakeawaysThe Difference Between a Boss and a Leader: “A boss will dictate, a leader will work alongside you.” As a founder, it can be easy to fall into the mindset that you have to always be the boss, but a leader keeps their team motivated, creates transparency, and gets people invested in the company values. Are you a boss, or are you a leader? Know Your Employees with Regular Touchpoints: At UniTaskr, they have “quarterly appraisals'' that act as a touchpoint with each employee to give them the opportunity to discuss their progress at work, set key milestones, and share how they're feeling within their day-to-day roles. This creates happier employees more invested in your company's vision and more likely to stick with you.Having a Technical Cofounder Helps: Newsflash - It can be  tough to build a tech company if none of the founding team knows how to code. As you're looking to start a company, find people that fill the gaps you have; none more important than someone that can build the product!ResourcesJoseph's LinkedInAbout From a reusable golf ball seller at age 11 to safari ranger at 16, Joseph's journey to founding his current company (UniTaskr) at 19 has been a meteoric rise. UniTaskr - The Student Marketplace, has been created in order to tackle the student financial crisis. Students all over the world are constantly on the lookout for ways to earn money effectively around their studies. Meanwhile members of the general public and local businesses are constantly on the lookout for ways of cutting costs.UniTaskr allows students to find quick & reliable part time work, through accepting tasks set by members of the local community. Upon signing up, students are able to highlight any key tasks they believe they can complete, then when a member of the public posts a request, the right students are notified. If you love what you are getting out of our show please SUBSCRIBE.For more information on how we dig into the dirt check out our other episodes here: https://www.orchid.black/podcastAll contents of this show are rights of Orchid Black©️ and are not to be used unless authorized by written consent.

Then there is the work by Karl Scheele, which was delayed being published, and Mikhail Lomonosov, which was generally ignored. Finally we reach Marie-Ann Paulze and Antoine Lavoisier, who created modern chemistry by realizing that phlogiston is bogus and water is not an element. We encounter Johann Joachim Becher, with his three elemental earths, including a fatty earth that burned. Then we learn of Georg Ernst Stahl, and his popular idea of phlogiston as the burning quality--but it explained corrosion and rust, too! There is the new calibrated tool, the thermometer, which led to Joseph Black's research on gas sylvester. We discover that at this time, alchemy and chemistry finally diverge, never to meet again. This week we talk about money, financial literacy, and credit. But don’t get it confused, we talk about it in a way you can understand it. That’s the gift today’s guest has. As the founder of RaisingBenjamin.com Carl Joseph Black breaks down complex finance news into bite-sized digestible nuggets anyone can understand. We didn’t really have enough time to discuss everything I wanted to know and we still went over the typical 20 or so minutes I try my best to hold the discussion to. We still covered a good amount of ground though. Some of the gems dropped: The difference between being rich vs being wealthy. Being rich is more about the material things people see. Being wealthy is the money moves that can’t be detected by the human eye, but still somehow disrupts or changes the way we live. Read the boring stuff. Get used to reading the boring stuff like financial newspapers. You’ll start to develop a 3rd eye for the way money works if you make a habit out of it. One example Carl gives is Warren Buffet. Buffet still finds time to read for an extended amount of hours a day. If that’s a habit he uses to keep himself wealthy, why don’t we take that same habit on? I don’t know about ready 5 hours a day though. Ha! Humanize data. Start finding ways to make data make sense to you in layman’s terms. This is one of those skills you can organically develop from reading financials a lot. Credit as an investor. Carl gives us a masterclass on how to build credit as a business to help us build wealth. If you loved this episode make sure to give Carl a shout on Twitter and get your invite to his newsletter The Dime. Be sure to check out my book “Don’t Dumb Down Your Greatness” Peace!

5th May is the International Day of the Midwife, shining a light on the important work that midwives of worldwide to deliver the worlds children. So I thought I would repost my interview with one of the most inspiring midwives in the US and that is no exaggeration.  Jennie Joseph,  CEO of Commonsense Childbirth based in Florida, has worked tirelessly through her The JJ Way™ method  to educate, empowerment and support women to have healthy pregnancies and babies.   America has the highest maternal mortality rate of any industrialized country in the world. More than two women die every day in the USA from pregnancy-related causes, and 3 to 4 times as many Black women as White are at-risk or die during pregnancy. We have read and heard of Serena Williams experience and the challenge that Beyonce has - the issues for Black women cross socio economic  boundaries - it is real and we all need to know what is happening. Raising awareness about this preventable issue gives a platform to Black women to share their experiences, and educates and empowers communities to push for change. Jennie is  a national speaker, motivator, and author. She has  been featured in documentaries  about this important issue, has  hosted her own radio talk show and is a regular guest on other shows. I... In this episode  Hear her  thoughts on what success means to her and her personal journey. and how her success was more organic , verses  being planned,  through the challenge of transitioning as a midwife from the UK to the US. Jennie  shares how she could not ignore the calling to work on behalf of underserved women and babies and the terrible maternal health outcomes in the US, that are often unknown and the impact on black women and families. We're joined by old friend to the show, Gav. He brought along a new friend to the show, business strategist, Carl Joseph-Black. The four of us chopped it up about: -ESPN doing the most with Jemele Hill -When does you personal and professional voice become one? -Waka Flocka says he's not black...and we're like...OKAY! Plus, we discuss the Dove controversy, balling out at the 99 cents store and lying about your race to secure the bag. Speaking of the bag, Carl has like a million ways for us to stack paper. We're using methods one through a million. Gavin-- twitter.com/Glike Carl-- twitter.com/CJoeBlack https://www.raisingbenjamin.com ____________________________________________________ Join the convo! How is it that a small, poor country in northern Europe became one of the most dynamic centres of Enlightenment thinking? This unit examines the cultural, intellectual and religious characteristics of Scotland in the eighteenth century that led to the emergence of such intellectual pioneers as James Hutton, Joseph Black and William Cullen, and briefly describes their key ideas and findings. This study unit is just one of many that can be found on LearningSpace, part of OpenLearn, a collection of open educational resources from The Open University.
