Nick Kershaw is the energetic leader of the dream and revels in making a vision into a reality - bringing people together through the power of running. In 2015, Nick left his job in finance, placed all his possessions in two bags, and set on his way to create Impact Marathons around the world. He is deeply passionate about almost everything, and he brings his relentless energy to every meeting, every race, every taxi journey...everything. He built Impact Marathon starting from zero, and has had to do the same again as we emerge for the pandemic. He lives, and breathes 'the power of running' but is inspired by every single Impact Runner, every single charity partner, every single team member who give so much to those around them. The Impact Marathon Series was born from a dream that they could use the simple power of running to uplift communities and empower runners all over the world. In 2015, they turned our dream into a reality, taking Impact Marathon to Nepal. Living in a Nepali village, they undertook the challenge of building a 5km water pipeline to the community, before lacing up their shoes and running their own race - it was then that they realised they have the power to change people's lives forever. ---- Please subscribe to the Sports for Social Impact Podcast wherever you get your podcast! Red Knot Racing firmly believes the solutions to the world's problems lie in sacrificing ourselves in order to improve life for others. They founded Red Knot to make the world a better place, and they stand by that commitment. A minimum of 2% of our total revenue supports community development work in Tanzania. But it's not just money they contribute; our staff personally assists farmers and youth to navigate the hardships they encounter. Thomas Cervetti, 34 years old, is a former Civil Engineer and passionate surfer. He was living in South East Asia for 5 years where he met Nicolas and Basile. Surfing all over Indonesia, they faced shocking plastic pollution and could noticed its impact on marine life and reefs. That's when they decided to start NOMADS SURFING in order to develop alternatives in the surf industry. Nomads Surfing, an ecofriendly surf brand, is the story of three friends, three surfers but most of all, three globetrotters: Nicolas, Thomas and Basile, traveling from West to East for work or pleasure but always with a surfboard in their luggage. The story started on April 2017, around a good beer at the bottom of the Pyla dune, facing the ocean, this ocean that became our project's keystone. Lucy Hunt is a Senior Advisor with The Ocean Race Summits & Learning programmes, the Founder of the Sea Synergy Marine Awareness + Activity Centre. She specializes in: Environmental Event content creation, Multigenerational Environmental Education, Marine Awareness, Outdoor Learning, Social + Environmental Event programming and strategy, Marine Research, MMO, Environmental surveys, PADI Divemaster, marine tour guide, surveyor, Senior Advisor on marine conservation and curriculum creation, Environmental awareness exhibtion content creation, Environmental awareness film production researcher and content creation, speech content and writing, Environmental documentary host and narrator. The Ocean Race is often described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world, sailing's toughest team challenge and one of the sport's Big Three events, alongside the Olympic Games and America's Cup. To truly understand the race, though, it's better to think of it in a way the athletes who take part will recognise immediately. Put simply, The Ocean Race is an obsession, and many of the world's best sailors have dedicated years, even decades of their lives trying to win it. Since 1973, The Ocean Race has provided the ultimate test of a team and a human adventure like no other. For nearly 50 years, it has kept an almost mythical hold over some of the greatest sailors and been the proving ground for the legends of our sport. Fakhrie Arendse is the Sport Social Worker at School of Hard Knocks. He is an optimistic, compassionate, and outspoken husband and father. Fakhrie's passion for Social Work was born out of exposure to adverse norms in his own community, and a rather inexplicable interest in 'why people are the way they are'. This psychology major has since worked with society's most vulnerable; his experience ranging from trauma and grief counselling, mediation, family therapy, advocacy, conflict management, youth development, community strengthening, public speaking, to project management and coordination. He has a particular passion for youth empowerment through sport and believes the fruits of a well-functioning society are fostered in the efforts of nurturing young people - by creating an environment conducive for youth to make a positive contribution to the world at large. School of Hard Knocks (SoHK) is an award winning Cape Town based non-profit with a proven track record in using sport and one on one counselling to help young people cope with trauma, change outdated perceptions of gender, and improve their physical and emotional well-being.
