The Retirement Income Challenge is a four-day event that helps individuals create a retirement income plan. Day one focuses on the Retirement Income Style Assessment (RISA), which analyzes two factors: probability-based safety first and optionality versus commitment. Day two introduces the funded ratio, a balance sheet approach to financial planning that compares assets to liabilities. The funded ratio helps individuals understand if they have enough assets to meet their retirement goals. Day three explores how the RISA and funded ratio work together to fill income gaps and create a comprehensive retirement income plan. The conversation covers the Retirement Income Style Awareness (RISA) framework and the Retirement Income Challenge. The hosts discuss the importance of reliable income to cover essential expenses in retirement and the role of the RISA framework in providing alternatives to fill income gaps. They emphasize that shooting for 100% on the RISS percentages is not necessary and that it's important to have reliable income covering essential expenses. They also mention the non-financial aspects of retirement and the importance of planning for what you want to do in retirement. The hosts highlight the interactive nature of the Retirement Income Challenge and the value it provides in helping individuals gain clarity and confidence in their financial plan for retirement. This month, we're welcoming practitioners from Atlanta Regional Commission: Katherine Zitsch, Deputy COO, and Jon Philipsborn, Climate and Resilience Manager.Regional commissions work on many subject areas across a metropolitan area, from community development and transportation to water security and climate change. At ARC, resilience is a key defining factor in how they make decisions around all of these topics and more. In this episode, hosts Alysha and Todd and their guests discuss how ARC is helping Atlanta tackle big development questions, challenges and opportunities. The group also tackles larger questions like the role of government, specifically local governments, in engineering and environmental decisions, as well as specific projects ARC is working on to solve problems and build relationships across Atlanta."What's interesting about resilience is that everybody comes at it differently. Every city is in a different space, and every county is in a different space, and what we're trying to do at ARC is leverage the ones that are ahead towards helping the ones that are interested, but haven't had the space to get there yet."Both guests also responded to our usual request for a haiku about their episode's subject matter, despite some debate about syllables...Katherine's poem:Atlanta's futureKnitting our resilienceBridges to new pathsJon's poem:Disasters happenOur choices influence the impactFuture is openLearn more about Atlanta Regional Commission here.
In this episode, Alex and Wade answer questions on safe withdrawal rates, annuities, and retirement planning. They discuss the considerations for investing in a Qualified Longevity Annuity Contract (QLAC) and the difference between immediate and deferred annuities. They also explore the use of Single Premium Immediate Annuities (SPIAs) in combination with Fixed Index Annuities (FIAs) and the benefits of buffer assets in reducing sequence risk. Additionally, they address the challenges of finding automatic options for equity investments and provide insights for individuals who are considering retirement but are unsure about their options. Listen now to learn more. Takeaways Consider the insurance aspect of annuities and view them as a way to protect against longevity risk and provide guaranteed income in retirement. When deciding between investing and buying a QLAC, focus on the insurance benefits and peace of mind rather than potential investment returns. SPIAs and FIAs can be used in combination to provide both guaranteed income and growth potential in retirement. Buffer assets can help reduce sequence risk and allow for a higher withdrawal rate from an investment portfolio. Retirement decisions should not be solely based on financial considerations, but also on personal fulfillment and well-being. In this episode, Wade and Alex discuss various topics related to retirement planning and investment strategies. They address questions about reconciling portfolio structure when spouses have different orientations, allocating between growth and value stocks, estimating healthcare expenses in retirement, investing in high-yielding stocks, using closed-end funds for retirement income, and implementing a reverse glide path for early retirement. We'll also discuss various retirement planning topics, including managing the sequence of returns risk in early retirement, blending time segmentation and total return strategies, balancing safety first and commitment orientation, and the impact of RMDs on immediate annuities. Listen now to learn more. Takeaways When spouses have different orientations, it's important to find a middle ground that considers risk preferences and liquidity needs. The RISA framework helps determine retirement income strategies but doesn't provide specific guidance on asset allocation decisions. Estimating healthcare expenses in retirement should be part of the overall budget and doesn't require a separate reserve. Investing in high-yielding stocks or funds can be risky and may not provide the desired income or diversification. Closed-end funds may not be an efficient or recommended strategy for retirement income due to concentration and leverage risks. A reverse glide path, starting with a lower stock allocation and gradually increasing it, can help manage sequence of returns risk in early retirement. When retiring early, managing sequence of returns risk can be achieved by using a lower withdrawal rate, which may reduce the need for a reverse equity glide path. The glide path can be a way to blend time segmentation and total return strategies, such as using a bond ladder for the start of retirement and gradually increasing equity allocation. Balancing safety first and commitment orientation in retirement planning involves considering contractual protections, such as annuities, while not going overboard with them. RMDs and immediate annuities: The Secure Act 2.0 allows the excess income from an immediate annuity to be applied towards other RMDs, providing more flexibility for retirees. Start by honing your version of the good life. And you don't need to wait until you retire. Start living your version of the good life now. Emily Austin, Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest, shares her insights on what we can learn from Ancient Greek philosopher Epictetus about living with pleasure today, while planning prudently for the future. Her book poses the question: If we want happiness and pleasure so much, then why aren't we good at getting it yet? Get smarter on how you can prepare to retire happy and live with more joy now with this discussion of Epicurean philosophy. Emily Austin joins us from North Carolina. __________________________ Bio Emily A. Austin is Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. And I think Epicureanism, in particular, hasn't received the attention it deserves - and it has a lot going for it. But one of the things about Ancient Greek philosophy is the reason people go back to it is that their central question was happiness. What is the good life? And Epicurus himself said philosophy is worthless unless it helps people live a good life. All this other stuff is useless unless it quiets the mind. And so, it's a timeless question and they have timeless answers. Sometimes it's just comforting to know that the answers are old. But they were also very counter-cultural. They really liked to shake things up. Greek philosophers were not just your normal people. They challenged people. And I think that even if you end up deciding, Oh, this isn't for me, they're asking such important questions about living that you have to figure out the answers. And so I think they're challenging the standard narratives - and people need that. They need to be kind of shaken up even if they think, Oh, that's not for me." On Not Delaying Joy "And Epictetus is often associated with this phrase, Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die. And though he never said that, he does say why delay joy? We only get one life. And so even if you don't have a lot of time for joy now, it's really important to pursue it now and to get good at it. Whether that's in very small amounts of time or, or larger amounts of time, I think some people who kind of take their retirement as they go in a certain way and that has a little bit to do with what they take to be the good life. A lot of the joy we find is in simple things in everyday activities, in being with one another. And it doesn't take anything flashier. It doesn't really cost a lot of money. And so I think he would focus on joy now and practicing living. Don't delay it,

Dr. Lipman is a widely recognized trailblazer and leader in functional and integrative medicine, and he is a New York Times best-selling author of five books, How to Be Well, The New Health Rules, Young and Slim for Life, Revive and Total Renewal. After his initial medical training in his native South Africa, Lipman spent 18 months working at clinics in the bush. He became familiar with the local traditional healers, called sangomas, which kindled his interest in non-Western healing modalities In 1984, Lipman immigrated to the United States, where he became the chief medical resident at Lincoln Hospital in Bronx, NY. While there, he became fascinated by the hospital's addiction clinic, which used acupuncture and Chinese medicine making him even more aware of the potential of implementing non-Western medicine to promote holistic wellbeing. He began studying nutrition, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, herbal medicine, functional medicine, biofeedback, meditation, and yoga. Lipman founded the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in 1992, where he combines the best of Western medicine and cutting edge nutritional science with age-old healing techniques from the East. And it's important to realize it's one of the important pillars of health. We talk about diet, exercise, and stress, but sleep is up there. And the last thing I'd like to say, especially with your audience and with our age group, alcohol is not your friend. It's not your friend with anything, but particularly when it comes to sleep. A lot of people drink alcohol because it sort of calms them down and they think it makes them fall asleep, but it really disrupts your sleep." On Melatonin "We've always thought of melatonin as something for sleep. But lately I've been exploring a lot of the research using or seeing melatonin as one of the primary anti-aging hormones. So as we get older, our melatonin levels decrease, and that may be why we find it harder to sleep, but melatonin doesn't just affect your sleep. Melatonin affects your immune system, your heart, it affects metabolism, sugar control and your weight.

Modern Scotland is a multi-lingual country. Gaelic, Scots and English, along with newer introductions from Europe and beyond, all influence the way Scotland’s people now speak to each other and to the rest of the world. Created with the positive encouragement of Bòrd na Gàidhlig and with support from BBC Alba, this unit – available in both Gaelic and English – has been designed to provide a resource for people with a personal or professional interest in increasing their knowledge and understanding of the development and impact of Scottish Gaelic and its culture. It aims to surprise and challenge where necessary; to provide links and ideas for further research; and, for some, to kick-start a journey into learning a language which is integral to Scotland’s national identity. Some of Britain’s most dramatic scenery is to be found in the Scottish Highlands. The sight of mighty Ben Nevis, the desolate plateau of the Cairngorms, or the imposing landscapes of Glen Coe can unleash the call of the wild in all of us. Although these landforms were largely carved by glacial activity that ended some 10,000 years ago, the rocks themselves tell of a much older history. The Highlands are merely eroded stumps of a much higher range of ancient mountains. This unit is an account of the origin and demise of that ancient mountain range, based on the geological evidence laid before us in rock exposures. Both vitamins and minerals are essential in the diet in small quantities. The term ‘vitamin' was not coined until early in the 20th century, to describe those chemicals in food without which a pattern of deficiency symptoms (often called a deficiency syndrome) occurs. Minerals, also called mineral elements, are those elements other than carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen that are found in the body. This unit looks at the two main groups of vitamins: the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, and the water-soluble vitamins, those of the B group and vitamin C. It also examines the major mineral elements, and the importance of fluid balance in the body.
