What's the real purpose of Lent? Many Catholics see it as a season of sacrifice, but is there more to it? Judy Comeaux sits down with Kevin Kapchinski, Director of Religious Education at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan, TX, to unpack the deeper meaning of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Discover how Lent is not just about giving things up, but about reorienting our hearts toward God. On Gaudete Sunday—a day in Advent dedicated to rejoicing—the Rev. Justin Lopina will surprise his congregation by focusing his homily on sin. As the newly assigned pastoral administrator at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wauwatosa, Wis., he believes that our fear of sin—what he calls “our fear of letting God down”—often robs us of joy. Justin joins host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., to discuss how John the Baptist's call to repentance in the Gospel for Gaudete Sunday leads to joy more than simply moral obligations. They also explore the essentials of great preaching, emphasizing the importance of using one's body and physical presence and keeping homilies short (around 8 minutes) to maintain the congregation's attention. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for June 27th Publish Date: June 27th Commercial: From the Ingles Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Thursday, June 27th and Happy 53rd Birthday to actor Chris O'Donell. ***06.27.24 – BIRTHDAY – CHRIS O'DONNELL*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Saint Joseph Catholic Church Breaks Ground on New Rectory Red Roof Inns Settles Sex Trafficking Lawsuit Involving Smyrna Location Cobb Elections Explores Charging for Voter Challenges Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on Laura Lynn Products. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Saint Joseph Catholic Church Breaks Ground on New Rectory Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Marietta held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new rectory, replacing its historic but damaged former building. The original rectory, dating back to the mid-19th century, was demolished due to mold, asbestos, and water damage from burst pipes in 2022. Construction on the new rectory is set to begin July 1, expected to finish by summer 2025 at an estimated cost of $1.2 million. Funded by a $6 million capital campaign, the project will also add parking spaces and a soccer field. The new rectory will accommodate four priests with modern amenities and enhanced privacy, aiming to support the church's vibrant community. STORY 2: Red Roof Inns Settles Sex Trafficking Lawsuit Involving Smyrna Location Red Roof Inns has reached a confidential settlement with eleven plaintiffs who alleged they were sex trafficked at its hotels in Smyrna and Atlanta. The federal lawsuit, which began trial on June 11, accused Red Roof of profiting from sex trafficking by turning a blind eye to activities at their properties. The hotel chain denied wrongdoing but settled after plaintiffs testified and the defense began presenting its case. This marked the first sex trafficking lawsuit against a national hotel brand to go to trial. Plaintiffs' attorneys emphasized the importance of their clients' stories being heard and raising awareness about sex trafficking. STORY 3: Cobb Elections Explores Charging for Voter Challenges The Cobb Board of Elections discussed potentially charging individuals who challenge voters' eligibility, following a contentious meeting where thousands of voter registrations were challenged by a resident. Eugene Williams challenged 2,472 registrations, prompting debate among board members. They decided, in a 4-1 vote along party lines, to only consider challenges to active voters going forward, reducing the workload on elections staff. The possibility of charging challengers like Williams for the cost of notifications was debated, with varying opinions among board members and legal perspectives shared. This issue arises amidst broader changes in Georgia election law under Senate Bill 189, which facilitates mass voter challenges and faces legal challenges from organizations like the ACLU. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back. Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Cobb Approves Moratorium on Massage Parlor Licenses The Cobb Board of Commissioners has enacted a six-month moratorium on issuing licenses to massage parlors, or health spas, in response to rising concerns over illegal activities and code violations. This decision follows the denial of a license renewal for Wang's Feet due to a reported sexual assault and other violations. Cobb officials aim to strengthen regulations and enforcement before resuming licensing, citing ongoing challenges with illicit spa operations. Similar measures have been taken in nearby cities like Roswell to address issues such as human trafficking. Additionally, the commission approved funding for various projects including library furniture, a parks maintenance building, an emergency generator for the medical examiner lab, and road improvements. STORY 5: Out and About: 5 Things to Do This Weekend in Cobb County—June 28-30 This weekend offers a variety of events in the Marietta and Kennesaw areas. Brett Williams tries to connect his homilies from week to week. “Our discipleship isn't limited to Sunday to Sunday,” he says; it needs to be seen “within the context of our ongoing journey.” He cautions that this path may include moments when “it seems dark, and there doesn't seem to be any progress,” as well as times when it's “fantastic, easy, wonderful to be a disciple of Jesus.” He believes that “when we create either a series or a linkage between Sundays, people start to see this journey more clearly.” Brett serves as the pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Durban, South Africa, and previously chaired the synod committee for the Archdiocese of Durban. He openly acknowledges that his ordination at the age of 35 made him a “late vocation.” Prior to entering the seminary, he pursued a career as a college lecturer and served as an international cricket umpire for two decades. Listen to Brett's homily for the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A, on this week's episode of “Preach.” After the homily, he shares with host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., a Jesuit priest from South Africa, associate editor at America, and associate pastor at the Church of St. Francis Xavier in Manhattan, how the practice of synodal listening, really listening to each other, has shaped his preaching. Homily for Luke 3:15-16, 21-22 The people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ. John answered them all, saying, “I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Audio courtesy of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Libertyville, Ill. You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island native, James Siwy is a former pro baseball player and police officer? A right-handed pitcher, Siwy had a brief Major League Baseball career with the Chicago White Sox, playing in two games for the club in 1982 and another in 1984. His seven-year career in the minor leagues started in 1981 and ended in 1987. After his baseball career ended, Siwy worked with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for over 20 years. Now, for our feature story: Republican members of the state's bipartisan redistricting commission want the Connecticut Supreme Court to reconsider its decision to tap a Stanford University law professor to help redraw congressional districts after the group couldn't reach a bipartisan agreement and missed its deadline this week. The four commission members, all state legislators, filed a motion that requests Nathaniel Persily not serve as the court-appointed expert or special master and that two special masters instead be appointed “to preserve the public's confidence in the fairness of the redistricting process.” The motion came hours after the state's highest court issued a notice announcing it had appointed Persily, who previously served as special master in 2011 during the last reapportionment process when Connecticut lawmakers also couldn't reach a bipartisan agreement on congressional district boundaries. The Republicans noted that Persily's name was not on the list of three possible special masters they had submitted for the court to consider. However, he was mentioned publicly by Democratic Senate President Martin Looney as someone the Democrats would recommend to the court. Ultimately, the Democrats did not submit any names. The court has not yet responded to the Republicans' motion. According to a notice issued Thursday by the State Supreme Court, Persily is ultimately required to submit his plan to the justices on or before Jan. 18. The court will then accept submissions up until Jan. 24 and a hearing before the court is planned for Jan. 27. The court is expected to file its redistricting plan with the Office of the Secretary of the State by Feb. 15. Homily for Mark 8:27-35 Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” They said in reply, “John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.” And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Christ.” Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him. He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.” Audio courtesy of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Libertyville, Ill. Homily for Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands. —For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews, do not eat without carefully washing their hands, keeping the tradition of the elders. And on coming from the marketplace they do not eat without purifying themselves. And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed, the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds. — So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him, “Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?” He responded, “Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts. You disregard God's commandment but cling to human tradition.” He summoned the crowd again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile. “From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile.” Audio courtesy of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Libertyville, Ill. Homily for John 6:60-69 Many of Jesus' disciples who were listening said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father.” As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” Audio courtesy of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Libertyville, Ill.
