According to the Adams County Historical Society, the Civil War greatly impacted American funeral practices. The ACHS is hosting Mortuary practices: How the death profession was changed by the Civil War October 30th at 7 p.m. Maria Lynn, Archives Assistant says Duane Hills and Neva FinGado will be discussing the history of embalming practices in the United States and how the Civil War played a vital role in moving the death care profession and the preparation of the deceased into a new direction. “They talk about not only the Civil War, but the one of the gentlemen that wrote books. He actually worked for many years for Joseph Gobblers Sons, which was in Washington, DC, Funeral Home. It's still there today, and they still have very high-profile funerals. And I do believe that President Lincoln, after he was killed, he did he was taken eventually to the Sons Funeral Home, “said Lynn. During the Civil War, there were no dog tags to identify soldiers or federal hospitals. Andrew Dalton, Executive Director of the Adams County Historical Society and Gettysburg Beyond the Battle Museum adds there was a decline to preserve the bodies for long distance transportation and people were returning to practice buying the deceased near their home quickly. “After the Battle of Gettysburg, the town was so overwhelmed by the dead that I'm sure it was not available for every transportation. You know? And you know, if you think about it, there are like seven, 6 or 7000 bodies left behind at Gettysburg, meant almost all of them buried in temporary graves. But it was just an overwhelming undertaking for the town. And to deal with this, you know, there were some agencies that came in to help the Sanitary Commission, you know, the Sisters of Charity, a group of nuns from Emmitsburg. But for the most part, the task of dealing with this was left to the townspeople. So that's just a really important dimension here. But yeah, no dog tags, no ability to identify graves except for what was left in people's pockets. You know, if he died at a hospital, it was more likely that you would have given your name and information to someone who could then, you know, associate that with the body. But in many, many cases, you know, they're digging through people's bags and belongings and having sex and trying to find, you know, some sort of identifying mark, “said Dalton.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Also, on the program. Andrew Dalton is the Executive Director of the Adams County Historical Society and Beyond the Battle Museum. As a Gettysburg native, Dalton has always been drawn to history. “We have a lot of people who are connected to Gettysburg through family history, whether their ancestors lived here or there are millions of Americans undoubtedly, who had an ancestor that fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. And so, connecting those people to Gettysburg is something that I really enjoy because, you know, I found my own connection early on.” Andrew's passion for history began as he grew up at what was once the Gettysburg Country Club. With a curious spirit, he soon learned about the story of what happened on that property before, during, and after the Battle of Gettysburg.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
With a curious spirit, he soon learned about the story of what happened on that property before, during, and after the Battle of Gettysburg. “A 16 year old girl lived there and wrote an incredibly vivid account of her experiences during the battle. Her name was Amelia Harmon. And because this happened literally just a few hundred yards from where my modern-day house sat, I was just captivated by her, what happened to her? And that Confederate army burned her home during the battle she survived was basically sent out in the midst of all of it on the first day of the battle with her aunt to flee the scene as their house was left behind in flames. And so, she wrote this incredible account when she was an older woman in the early 1900s. And I really thought it hadn't seen enough tension. And so that's actually what drew me into the Adams County Historical Society at first, because these human-interest stories of civilians are often not given the attention that I think they deserve in the larger mixture of what people see and hear about when they come to Leesburg. So, I was just fascinated by her story turned into a book. But more importantly, it led me into this organization where, you know, I was able to, you know, uncover and learn many other stories of, you know, incredible heroism during and after the Battle of Gettysburg by our local community members. So just to put that into perspective, we have like 2000 people living in the town of Gettysburg at the time of the battle a little over 2000. And, you know, massive armies, hundreds of thousands of soldiers show up on their doorsteps, 50,000 plus casualties in three days. For a small town, it was just an unbelievable event that stayed with them for the rest of their lives. And so many of them wrote about it. We have hundreds of letters and diaries, and newspaper accounts left by these people. And that's really what got me hooked on learning more about Gettysburg and sharing those stories. The Beyond the Battle Museum was named best new museum in the United States in 2023. The museum has 12 exhibits including a “Caught in the Crossfire” immersive experience. Dalton credits the community for their support of the museum. “We rely on members and donors to do all that we do. And I really think history is just such an important and sometimes undervalued part of the community. You know, the identity of every community is. Tied to its history. And we're so fortunate in Gettysburg that we have not just local history, but national and even internationally significant history. And so we appreciate the support that comes to us. You can visit our website at npr.org. Or I think we just added Gettysburg history.org, if you want an easier link. But we are just so honored that people who have helped us make this dream come true for a new home, a new museum, a new space for us to preserve our collection. And, you know, we're preserving people's lives, you know, people, our ancestors, even, you know, parents and grandparents. If you think about it more closely, when they pass on, you know, people really treasure what's left. You know, a scrapbook or, you know, a personal item or a letter or a diary. And people cherish and hold on to these things and oftentimes pass them down for generations. And so, you know, we've become a permanent home once, you know, families have decided that they want something, you know, that might be even more lasting and guaranteed in terms of protecting that item. And so, we take about 100 donations every year. You know, it could range from an artifact to a grouping of letters or, you know, of a piece of furniture if there's a story attached to it, you know, that's important to someone in their life, in their legacy. You know, we want to make sure that that's protected. So we that's what we do with the support that we receive from the public. We invest that in keeping these stories and these people's legacies alive. And, you know, we're just grateful for the support we've received and hope that we'll continue to earn people's respect and trust and support in the future.” Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Gettysburg National Military Park is full of monuments. Gettysburg itself is home to numerous museums that interpret and display artifacts from the seminal 1863 Civil War battle. So, when the new Beyond the Battle Museum opened last April, some asked does Gettysburg need another museum? How will this one be different? The Beyond the Battle Museum was unique in Gettysburg and has had great success in the short time it's been open. Now the museum has been recognized nationally with USA Today's 10 Best Readers travel award for “Best New Museum” in the United States. With us on The Spark Wednesday, Andrew Dalton, Executive Director of the Adams County Historical Society talked about what makes the museum different,"The story of the battle, of course, is told in museums in Gettysburg, the story of the soldiers and the generals and the troop movements and the strategy behind everything. What's sort of missing is the story of how this community lived through all of it, and not just the battle, but Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and if you fast forward, Dwight Eisenhower lived here, had a farm here. There's a wonderful National Historic site dedicated to that, but still, kind of the single story of this place had never been told from the beginning of time to now. And so our museum takes visitors through Native American history, early colonial history of the area, going into the Civil War, of course, talking about the Battle of Gettysburg from the perspective of the civilians. Then moving into the modern era, the 20th century, and how the community changed and became Gettysburg, became a tourist Mecca for visitors all around the world." Dalton said part of the reason the museum was created was the Adams County Historical Society had accumulated so many historic documents and artifacts,"We have amassed a collection of rare documents, artifacts, photographs that numbers in the millions. And most of this collection was actually stored in crates at a warehouse offsite. We had no access to it, really, in some cases, no idea what we had, but it was an absolute treasure trove of Gettysburg related material. So, it was only right for us as an organization to seek out a new home for this collection." Dalton indicated history is being discovered all the time, including a find just last week,"It's a book, and it's just an agricultural history of Pennsylvania from printed in, like, the early 1860s. And it was something that we were debating. Do we even need to keep books like this? And so we're going through and kind of weeding out our library and deciding what materials we keep. And I open up the book to the very back, and there's a handwritten inscription in pencil written by a wounded Union soldier who's lying in this house -- just about I can pretty much see where this farm was out the window of our building on the first day of the battle. This guy's wounded. He crawls to this house, and he pulls this book off the shelf, and he writes a note to the owner of the house telling his story, and then just shoves the book back on the shelf. And I guess the family kept it and donated it to us, but it was just sitting amidst our library of hundreds, if not thousands of books here, with this handwritten note from the soldier written during the battle. I know that's not nationally significant, but it's the type of thing that really makes you excited when you open it for the first time." Dalton said it was an honor to be nominated for the USA Today award but there was some stiff competition too,"I know there was an art museum, a large art museum in Buffalo, New York that I think they came in second in the contest and the one that we always joked about -- there's a new punk rock museum in Las Vegas, and we were running neck and neck with them for most of the competition. And so I'll have to go see that when I'm out there. There's a very intense following for punk rock, too. So, I'm proud that the history buffs out there put us over the top." November 22nd, 1963 – 60 years ago today, President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed while riding in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. It was one of the defining moments of the 20th century. During that week in November, 1963, there was an observance of another seminal moment in American history – the 100th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. President Kennedy was invited to speak in Gettysburg, but declined and went to Dallas later in the week. On The Spark Wednesday we talked about that week in 1963 in Gettysburg, documents that survive and Kennedy and Gettysburg. Appearing on the program, Jill Ogline Titus, Associate Director of the Civil War Institute, Co-Coordinator of Public History Minor at Gettysburg College and author of the book Gettysburg 1963 Civil Rights, Cold War Politics, and Historical Memory in America's Most Famous Small Town, said Kennedy could have chosen to attend both the commemoration of the Gettysburg Address and gone to Dallas as well,"The Gettysburg Centennial Commission did invite Kennedy to come for the anniversary and the the anniversary commemoration wasn't just the (November) 19th. The events really spanned from the 17th through the 19th. There were a few more things on the 20th, and the invitation to Kennedy was to speak on the 19th itself. But there were a number of other activities that the Commission would have loved to have him involved in if he had been here for longer than just the 19th. That it's definitely true that people involved with the commemoration, as soon as word of the assassination reached them, immediately drew the conclusion that if Kennedy had come, his life would have been saved. They wrote about that very extensively. You know, if President Kennedy had only accepted our invitation, he'd still be alive and the country would have been spared this this horrible tragedy. But I think the documentation shows us that it's not quite that much of a black and white issue." Titus indicated that Kennedy went to Texas because there was a political feud amongst Democrats on the state level and Kennedy wanted to shore up support in an important state in the 1964 election. Andrew Dalton, Executive Director of the Adams County Historical Society said on The Spark that documents in the Historical Society's archives include plans for President Kennedy if he came to Gettysburg, but he added those plans included someone who had a significant role after the president was killed,"It's actually just very kind of hastily put together notes from a meeting that was held, sort of a memo that was created based on this meeting held on September 5th, 1963, between Louis Simon, who was the secretary of the planning committee here in Gettysburg, and Malcolm Kilduff, who was the assistant press secretary. I just wanted to point out, I didn't know this until a few hours ago, but Malcolm Kilduff ended up going to Dallas with Kennedy a few days after and was actually the acting press secretary there with Kennedy. He was in, I think the third car of the motorcade that went to the hospital. He was actually the man who informed Lyndon Johnson that Kennedy had died. He gave the statement in front of TV cameras to the press and then actually recorded the oath of office on the plane when Johnson was sworn in. So this guy, just a few days later, is right there on the front lines of what was going on in Dallas. But fast rewind 78 days and you have this meeting in the press office at the White House between the folks in Gettysburg and Kilduff." The document Dalton referred to (see below) included logistical questions about Kennedy's time in Gettysburg and the activities surrounding the 100th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. One question from the White House was whether Kennedy would ride in a car through the streets of Gettysburg to the National Cemetery, where Kennedy would speak, or if there was a place for a helicopter to land closer to the cemetery. Dalton speculated there was concern about the president riding in an open car.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Justice for HalynaMatt Hutchins, the widower of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins has moved ahead with a wrongful death lawsuit against Alec Baldwin and others involved with the film. During the widely covered news conference on Tuesday, attorneys for Matt Hutchins made a number of points. The Los Angeles Times quotes attorney Brian Panish stating, “There are many people culpable, but Mr. Baldwin was the person holding the weapon.”Ditching the Vaccine PassportAmid mounting public frustration and Covid-19 weariness, not to mention the trucker protests that have convulsed Ottawa and made headlines around the world, Quebec's health minister, Christian Dubé, announced on Tuesday that the province will soon do away with the vaccine passports that have been necessary to shop and dine in public and have made life during the pandemic even more trying and difficult for millions of people. The Montreal Gazette quoted the health minister saying that he has taken this step because it makes sense to do so now, given the Covid-19 numbers and the state of public health in the province, and not simply in response to political pressures.Sorry, RoseFor fans of film star Rose McGowan and sympathizers with #MeToo, it must be highly frustrating to learn that a federal judge has thrown out McGowan's lawsuit alleging that Harvey Weinstein engaged in a pattern of behavior that crossed the line into racketeering in his efforts to keep her quiet about his unwanted sexual advances.According to an Associated Press story by Andrew Dalton on February 14, federal judge Otis D. Wright II tossed out the suit on a technicality, noting that McGowan had failed to meet filing deadlines even though the court had extended the deadlines in an effort to accommodate her.Put Your Money Where Your Mouth IsDo progressives really wear masks and socially distance when they have any choice in the matter? Evan Symon carries on his excellent coverage of the California political scene with a February 14 piece in the California Globe on the flouting of Covid-19 rules and protocols by members of the very political elite that has been so self-righteous about enforcing such rules. The article details how, at Super Bowl LVI which took place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Sunday, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti was one of a number of public officials and celebrities captured on video as they freely ignored mask and social distancing protocols. Charlize Theron and Sean Penn also make notable appearances in the video, which has received more than 1.4 million views.
