In these dark times, we must fight evil with the most powerful weapons we have. The Rosary is foremost among them. Join the Great Rosary Campaign today at: www.GreatRosaryCampaign.com.The Great Rosary Campaign is a yearlong mission for the conversion of cultural leaders. We will announce a weekly call to pray every Sunday for specific fallen-away Catholics and non-Catholics.Today will be the one exception, since the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary happens to fall on a Monday this year. Originally, it was called the Feast of Our Lady of Victory, in commemoration of the victory of the naval forces of the Holy League against the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. St. Pope Pius V asked all the soldiers and leaders to pray the Rosary. On the day of the battle, which was hundreds of miles away, he received a revelation that the Catholic forces had won a great victory. He called for the Cardinals, priests, and officials to offer thanks to God that very day, despite the fact that he only received received final confirmation of the victory weeks later.Countless Saints and Popes have told us that the Rosary is incredibly powerful for three things in particular:1. Keeping the Faith2. Moral renovation3. Conversions of non-CatholicsThe Great Rosary Campaign is also based on several biblical themes and principles.First, PRAY FOR OUR BRETHREN. “Pray for one another…” (Jas. 5:16). “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, and especially to those who are of the household of faith" (Gal. 6:10).Second, PRAY FOR OUR ENEMIES. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven" (Matt. 5:43-44).Third, PRAY FOR ALL MEN, PARTICULARLY LEADERS AND THOSE IN AUTHORITY. “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, or kings and all who are in high positions…” (1 Tim. 2:1-2).Fourth, GOING INTO BATTLE WITH THE ARK. When the ancient Israelites came to Jericho, God didn't tell them to besiege the city. Instead, He told them to march around it with the Ark of the Covenant seven times, and on the seventh the walls would fall. We will now "march" in prayer for seven days with the New Ark of the Covenant, Our Lady, through the Rosary. We pray in hope that on the seventh day, a day especially devoted to Our Lady (Saturday), extraordinary graces of conversion will be given to those we are praying for.Fifth, EVANGELISM AND APOLOGETICS = LOVE + ARGUMENTS + PRAYER + PENANCE. Ultimately it is God who reveals Himself to a soul, and empowers them to say "yes" to Him by His grace. He chooses to use us, but He does not have to. We must remember that as we evangelize and defend the Faith, our arguments will be fruitless unless informed by love (charity), and reinforced by prayer and penance.Sixth, RETURNING GOOD FOR EVIL. “Do not return evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but on the contrary bless, for to this you have been called, that you may obtain a blessing" (1 Pet. 3:9).THIS WEEK, the first week of the Great Rosary Campaign, we are praying for the Pope and Priests of the Catholic Church. The SUGGESTED PENANCE this week is giving up a meal.Sign up to take part in the Great Rosary Campaign today: www.GreatRosaryCampaign.com

Walking with the Saints l Feast of St. Pius V, Pope, Patronage of Roccaforte Mondovì Diocese of Alessandria Urbiztondo, Pangasinan l April 30 Today, we have another very extraordinary saint, St. Pius V, a pope who had accomplished so much for the Roman Catholic Church. He implemented the decrees and spirit of the Council of Trent, the Council which addressed the challenges of the Protestant Reformation and systematized the Catholic Church's response to the Protestants. He was also responsible for the standardization of the manner of celebrating the Holy Mass, in administering the Sacraments, in praying the Liturgy of the Hours and the performance of other ecclesiastical functions. St. Pius V was born Antonio Ghislieri in Bosco, Lombardy, Italy on January 17, 1504.  At the age of 14, he took the Dominican habit and after his priestly ordination was assigned as lector in philosophy and theology for 16 years, and became a novice master, governing the house according to the spirit of the founder. In 1556, he was appointed Bishop. He was transferred to the bishopric of Mondovi after it was ravaged by war and was able to restore peace, order and stability in the place. Afterwards, he was recalled to Rome for other important duties. In 1565, Pope Pius IV died and Michael (his Baptismal name) Ghislieri was chosen to take his place. He took the name Pius V. Among his first injunctions was that all bishops should stay in their own dioceses and the parish priests should have residence in their parish. The new Catechism was completed, and catechetical instruction to the young was carried out seriously, the new Breviary was published, the Holy Scripture regained its proper place, and the prayers of the Missal were restored, some revised and adapted to the needs of the time. He also encouraged the improvement of Ecclesiastical music. Besides the preoccupation for the needs of the Church, he also devoted time and effort to help the poor and the needy. For instance, the money intended to give a lavish banquet for ambassadors, bishops and dignitaries during his coronation was not spent for that purpose but was distributed to the poor and the hungry. Pope Pius V was a young boy when Protestantism began and in his lifetime, he saw it as a big challenge to the Church. So among the many problems he faced was the growing Protestant influence among the Catholics. He had also to combat the Turks under the Ottoman Empire. When the forces of the Ottoman Empire (the Turks) attacked and tried to take a part of Venice, the Holy League composed of Christian forces fought against them. Through divine intervention, the Christians defeated the Turks. The victory which happened on October 7, 1571 was attributed to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom the Christians invoked during the fierce battle.  It is recorded that Christians prayed the Rosary while the battle was going on. This is now known as the “Victory of Lepanto.” Pope Pius V gave Mother Mary the title Our Lady of Victory and a feast was established under this title. Six months after the glorious victory, Pope Pius V was struck by a painful bodily disorder which he had suffered for some time and died on May 1, 1572.  He was canonized by Pope Clement XI in 1711.  His shrine is in the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. Virtue: piety, humility, commitment, perseverance, charity, courage, loyalty and integrity Prayer: “St. Pius V, pray for us, that all Church leaders and Catholic faithful may follow devotedly the various rules of the Church.”

The double marriage between the Habsburg and Spanish dynasties organised in the creation of the Holy League in 1495 was part of a larger plan driven by the Spanish monarchs to create a general European-wide alliance against the French. To further these aims, Ferdinand and Isabella also arranged for their other children to marry into the Portuguese and English royal families as well. Such good family planning, however, was not to yield anywhere near the results that Ferdinand and Isabella sought. In this episode we will track the tumultuous journeys leading up to the weddings which brought Spain and the Low Countries together, the devastating repercussions the Spanish monarchs' religiosity would have for the Jews of the Iberian peninsula, as well as a series of untimely deaths which would see the Spanish succession repeatedly shuffle down the line. When the music stopped in this dynastic game of musical chairs, Philip the Handsome and Joanna of Castile's five month old baby son, Charles, would found himself perched on the stool which held possession of a ridiculous amount of Spanish, Imperial and Burgundian titles, all of which would eventually make him the most powerful person in Europe. When French king Charles VIII laid claims to the Kingdom of Naples and invaded Italy in September, 1494, an anti-French coalition called the League of Venice was formed, with the aim of kicking France out of the Italian peninsula. “Hang on a second, what does this have to do with the Netherlands?”, I hear you ask. Bear with me here. The League of Venice included a bunch of Italian city-states and regional powers, including the Pope Alexander VI, as well as our friend Emperor Maximilian and the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon. To help cement this anti-French alliance between Spain and the Habsburgs, a double marriage was arranged which would see Maximilian's children marry the children of the Spanish monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand. October 7: Our Lady of the RosaryMemorial; Liturgical color: WhitePatroness of Malaga, Spain, and the Archdiocese of VancouverMary comes to the rescue, and the Catholic West avoids the fate of the Orthodox EastIn 1204 Venetian Crusaders traveling to the Holy Land sacked Constantinople. Debts were not being paid, so something had to be done. Relics were packed up and shipped back to Italy, as well as gold, silver, precious stones, art, vestments, and booty. The city was stripped clean. The conquered have much longer memories than the conquerors, and Constantinople, the New Rome, never forgot 1204. So, in the first half of the 1400s, when Ottoman Turks ringed the walls of Constantinople, making it a tiny Christian island in a vast Islamic sea, unifying with Rome for common defense was not an option for the Orthodox. As the Muslim noose tightened around the city's neck, little by little, year after year, Constantinople struggled for air. Emperor and Patriarch were desperate, so they finally approached the Pope and Western princes. Help us! A deal was struck. The Orthodox would unify with Rome, just in time to save Constantinople! But the memories of 1204 were too much to overcome. The Orthodox faithful rejected the rapprochement. Westerners were hated; their help unwelcome. A Byzantine official, when asked about unifying with Rome, made the sad comment that “I would rather see the Muslim turban in the midst of the city than the Latin mitre.” And so in 1453 the high, thick walls of Constantinople were breached. The Turks let loose on the city, slaves were taken, churches desecrated, the Hagia Sophia turned into a mosque, and the last Roman Byzantine Emperor, ironically named Constantine like the first Byzantine Emperor, was killed. New Rome having been taken, Old Rome was next. All of Europe now lay before the Turks like an empty table. No one and nothing stopped the Ottoman Turks until Our Lady did. The naval battle of Lepanto was the “September 11, 2001” moment of its generation. On the first Sunday of October, 1571, the ships of a Holy League of Catholic Kingdoms and the Papal States defeated the Ottoman navydecisively in the seas off of Greece. Islam was stopped in its tracks. There would be no repeat of 1453 in Old Rome. No desecration or pillaging, no murder of the Pope. A line had been drawn which has still not been crossed.Pope Saint Pius V, a Dominican, animated and organized the Holy League. He implored the faithful throughout Europe to pray the rosary, and himself led a rosary procession in the Eternal City, for Christian triumph. The ships of the Holy League were outmatched and outnumbered and needed all the divine assistance prayer could muster. These prayers were answered. The doors to the Mediterranean, and to the Atlantic beyond, were shut on the Turks. In thanksgiving for this miraculous victory, Pius V instituted the “Feast of Our Lady of Victory,” later changed to “Feast of the Holy Rosary” and finally “Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary.” Pope Leo XIII added the title "Queen of the Most Holy Rosary" to the Litany of Loreto in honor of Mary's intercession through the rosary. It may seem redundant to give Mary the title “Our Lady of the Rosary.” It sounds a bit like saying “Jesus of the Cross.” Of course she is Our Lady of the Rosary and of course He is Jesus of the Cross! Yet Mary and Jesus are multi-faceted, like diamonds whose angles and cuts play and sparkle as we admire their flawless symmetry. One mystery, then a doctrine, and then a truth, flash and blink as they rotate before us. The title “Our Lady of the Rosary” is like a facet. One aspect of the mystery of Mary shines in that title, deepening our love of the whole gem. Reflecting on one specific truth also helps the believer absorb the otherwise unfathomable greatness of God. Today our eye trains itself on the crown, the face, or just the cool elegance of our one-hundred carat Lady. Today we focus on Saint Mary, who loves to hear us call her by name, over and over and over again as our fingers run up and down the beads. Our Lady of the Rosary, we implore your intercession day in and day out, in the morning and in the evening, because we love to say your name and you love to hear us invoke you. You defeated vast armies seeking to destroy the Church. Help us to conquer our sins.

Almost an entire millennia before the famous "Battle of Lepanto" (1571) was fought against the Ottoman Empire and the Holy League, another decisive naval engagement took place on the high seas of the Mediterranean —the fateful "Battle of the Masts" (aka: the Battle of Phoenix) in the year of 654 / 655 AD. This major conflict between the forces of the (Medieval) Roman Empire led by then Emperor Constans II and the Rashidun Caliphate led by then Caliph Muawiyah I would inaugurate centuries of prolonged struggle for geopolitical hegemony of the Mediterranean Sea (which had itself prior up until that point been a Roman Lake for centuries) between the great powers who respectively championed the Christian & Islamic religion. Despite the former being only possible due to the latter taking place prior —the Battle of the Masts is in contrast to the Battle of Lepanto far less documented in regards to the available professional scholarship and even casual creators of digital material such as myself who tend to frame it (if at all) only within the narrow context of the event itself and not the broader historic factors which the causes and outcomes of battle are even themselves relatively few and far between. This particular segment aims to at least begin rectifying a situation which tends to minimize the topic into being little more than a footnote in the wider struggle of "Christianity vs. Islam" or "The Occident vs. The Orient" (aka: "The West" vs. "The East"). It is far more impactful and interesting than the simplified polemics that often are (unfortunately) contrived from modern sentiments that prioritize self-interest over the actual truth of such matters Join Tom as he provides an overview of the conflict, dives deeper into the transformative era of the 7th century with a particular focus on the political circumstances which the Eastern Roman / Byzantine Empire was facing (along with some side notes on its geographic neighbors such as the Arabs and the Persians), and also contextualizes the evolving nature + composition of the Roman military system with an emphasis on naval warfare as the Roman Navy of antiquity concluded its transition into the form it took in the Middle Ages. - Important Programming Notes: Description will be further improved after I finish work this week with additional links and notes. [Comment: Champion of the Rosary] Friends of the Rosary: Today is the Memorial Day of Pope St. Pius V, a sixteenth-century pontifex ardent defender of the Rosary. He formed a coalition of Christian forces — the Holy League, led by Spain — that would obtain the decisive victory of Lepanto, Greece, on October 7th, 1571. It was a fierce sea battle against hostile Islam that intended to wipe out Christianity and destroy Rome. Pope St. Pius V promoted massive public prayers of the Holy Rosary all across Europe, asking help from the Virgin Mary. Prayer would save Rome and Europe from becoming Muslim. The Holy Father attributed the victory to Our Lady's intercession. He declared October 7 Feast day of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary. This Marian Pope would also strengthen the Church and preserve the unity and integrity of the true faith during the years following the Protestant Reformation. Ave Maria! Jesus, I Trust In You! As the Ottoman Empire spread inexorably across Arabia, Persia, North Africa and the Levant, it seemed nothing could stop it. It even shook Europe to the core when Ottoman cannon blasted holes through Constantinople's previously impregnable walls, causing the final collapse of the 1000-year Byzantine Empire. Now, in 1571, with Venetian Cyprus on the brink of falling, Pope Pius V calls together a Holy League to try to halt the Ottoman advance into the Mediterranean Sea. Fail, and all Christendom might fall.  At the Battle of Lepanto, a Christian alliance of Spain, Venice, the Italian States and the Knights of Malta and Hospitallers took on the might of the Ottoman Empire. The outcome would decide the fate of Christian Europe, and by extension, the world.   Subscribe here on your favourite podcast channel, follow us on Instagram and Facebook @bitesizebattles, and please leave us a good review! In this episode, I revisit an epic naval battle that determined the fate of Christian Europe in 1571. This event represents a turning point between the daunting forces of the Ottoman Empire against a splintered and leaderless Holy League. The outcome of the battle would determine not only who would control the flow of commerce in the Mediterranean but also shape if Europe would remain Christian or be Muslim dominated. Pope Pius V called on all Christians to pray the rosary on October 7th to bring much-needed spiritual intercession in a time of desperation.   Links: The Battle of Lepanto: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Lepanto YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z0S8eSbDjQ G.K. [Comment: Battle of Lepanto] Friends of the Rosary, Each year, on October 7 we celebrate the memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary. In the 16th century, the Virgin Mary intervened at the request of Pope St Pius V and avoided the invasion of Europe by a very powerful Islamic army. That would have been the end of Christianity in the Western Hemisphere. Pope Pius V did not only prayed, but he organized a fleet called the Holy League to confront the navy of the Ottoman Empire. He also promoted Rosaries all across Europe and went on a personal incessant prayer, Rosary after Rosary. The European population was so scared then and reacted with such faith in Mary that Christians won the Battle of Lepanto, in Greece. As we say in the Memorare, when we implore for the help to Our Blessed Mother, She always answers. In Portugal and Austria, in the 20th Century, massive Rosary prayers stopped the Communist threat. Would we end up with a pandemic today, if millions of people were praying the Rosary? No one in our community has any doubt about it, right? Let's hold our most salvific tool. [Written by Mikel A | The Rosary Network, New York] [Today's Rosary in Video] — In the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, for rediscovering, as Pope Francis invited today, the beauty of the rosary prayer this month, and for encouraging people to carry a Rosary with them in their hands or their pockets. As Pope said, the recitation of the rosary is the most beautiful prayer we can offer to the Virgin Mary; it is a contemplation on the stages of the life of Jesus the Savior with his Mother Mary and is a weapon that protects us from evils and temptations. “In some evenings we can feel useless and lonely. It is then that prayer will come and knock on the door of our hearts,” he said. “And even if we have done something wrong, or if we feel threatened and frightened when we return before God with prayer, serenity and peace will return as if by a miracle.” • Month of the Rosary and Our Lady of Victory • The Battle of Lepanto, on page 16 of the free ebook “The Rosary, A Gift From Heaven”

Known for several centuries by the alternate title of Our Lady of Victory, the feast day takes place in honor of a 16th century naval victory which secured Europe against Turkish invasion. Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of the battle through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe. The feast always occurs one week after the similar Byzantine celebration of the Protection of the Mother of God, which most Eastern Orthodox Christians and Eastern Catholics celebrate on October 1 in memory of a 10th-century military victory which protected Constantinople against invasion after a reported Marian apparition.Pope Leo XIII was particularly devoted to Our Lady of the Rosary, producing 11 encyclicals on the subject of this feast and its importance in the course of his long pontificate. In the first of them, 1883's Supremi Apostolatus Officio, he echoed the words of the oldest known Marian prayer (known in the Latin tradition as the Sub Tuum Praesidium), when he wrote, It has always been the habit of Catholics in danger and in troublous times to fly for refuge to Mary. This devotion, so great and so confident, to the august Queen of Heaven, Pope Leo continued, has never shone forth with such brilliancy as when the militant Church of God has seemed to be endangered by the violence of heresy or by an intolerable moral corruption, or by the attacks of powerful enemies. Foremost among such attacks was the battle of Lepanto, a perilous and decisive moment in European and world history. Troops of the Turkish Ottoman Empire had invaded and occupied the Byzantine empire by 1453, bringing a large portion of the increasingly divided Christian world under a version of Islamic law. For the next hundred years, the Turks expanded their empire westward on land, and asserted their naval power in the Mediterranean. In 1565 they attacked Malta, envisioning an eventual invasion of Rome. Though repelled at Malta, the Turks captured Cyprus in the fall of 1570.The next year, three Catholic powers on the continent Genoa, Spain, and the Papal States - formed an alliance called the Holy League, to defend their Christian civilization against Turkish invasion. Its fleets sailed to confront the Turks near the west coast of Greece on October 7, 1571. Crew members on more than 200 ships prayed the Rosary in preparation for the battle - as did Christians throughout Europe, encouraged by the Pope to gather in their churches to invoke the Virgin Mary against the daunting Turkish forces. Some accounts say that Pope Pius V was granted a miraculous vision of the Holy League's stunning victory. Without a doubt, the Pope understood the significance of the day's events, when he was eventually informed that all but 13 of the nearly 300 Turkish ships had been captured or sunk. He was moved to institute the feast now celebrated universally as Our Lady of the Rosary.Turkish victory at Lepanto would have been a catastrophe of the first magnitude for Christendom, wrote military historian John F. Guilmartin, Jr., and Europe would have followed a historical trajectory strikingly different from that which obtained. Saint of the Day Copyright CNA, Catholic News Agency

Interesting Facts about the Battle A young contemporary of Don John's, Miguel Cervantes, fought with abandon and lost his left hand to a Turkish blade. With his remaining hand, he later penned Spain's greatest novel, Don Quixote. On another galley, a soldier of the Holy League, his soul torn with despair, took his sword to the ship's crucifix. The blade instantly shattered. Many years later, an attempt to re-forge the sword was made, but when the new blade was pulled from the fire, it fell to pieces. The crucifix on board the Real, which twisted itself to avoid a Turkish cannonball, is displayed in a side chapel of the cathedral of Barcelona. Gianandrea Doria carried on his galley a gift from the king of Spain, an image that is now displayed in the Doria chapel in the cathedral in Genoa. Exactly forty years before the battle of Lepanto, the Blessed Virgin appeared to a peasant boy leaving a miraculous image of herself on his smock. The bishop of the region immediately commissioned an artist to paint five copies of the image, and he touched each one to the original. Our Lady of Guadalupe was present at Lepanto. 1571 The Battle of Lepanto takes place as a fleet of the Holy League, a coalition of European Catholic states arranged by Pope Pius V, inflicted a major defeat on the fleet of the Ottoman Empire in the Gulf of Patras, in the Ionian Sea off of Greece. The Ottoman forces were sailing westward from their naval station in Lepanto when they met the fleet of the Holy League which was sailing east from Messina, Sicily. The Spanish Empire and the Venetian Republic were the main powers of the coalition, as the league was largely financed by Philip II of Spain and Venice was the main contributor of ships. Lepanto marks the last major engagement in the Western world to be fought almost entirely between rowing vessels, the galleys a direct descendant trireme warships, used since before the Roman Republic. The battle was in essence an "infantry battle on floating platforms", as well as the largest naval battle in Western history since classical antiquity, involving more than 400 warships. The victory of the Holy League is of great importance in the history of Europe and of the Ottoman Empire, marking the turning-point of Ottoman military expansion into the Mediterranean, although the Ottoman wars in Europe would continue for another century. 1780 During the American Revolution, Patriot irregulars under Colonel William Campbell defeat Tories under Major Patrick Ferguson at the Battle of King's Mountain in South Carolina. Major Ferguson's Tory force, made up mostly of American Loyalists from South Carolina and elsewhere, was the western wing of General Lord Cornwallis' North Carolina invasion force. One thousand American frontiersmen under Colonel Campbell of Virginia gathered in the backcountry to resist Ferguson's advance. Pursued by the Patriots, Ferguson positioned his Tory force in defense of a rocky, treeless ridge named King's Mountain. The Patriots charged the hillside multiple times, demonstrating lethal marksmanship against the surrounded Loyalists. Unwilling to surrender to a “band of bandits,” Ferguson led a suicidal charge down the mountain and was cut down in a hail of bullets. After his death, some of his men tried to surrender, but they were slaughtered in cold blood by the frontiersmen, who were bitter over British excesses in the Carolinas. 1849 Edgar Allan Poe, aged 40, dies a tragic death in Baltimore. Never able to overcome his drinking habits, he was found in a delirious condition outside a saloon that was used as a voting place. 1913 In attempting to find ways to lower the cost of the automobile and make it more affordable to ordinary Americans, Henry Ford took note of the work of efficiency experts like Frederick Taylor, the "father of scientific management." The result was the assembly line that reduced the time it took to manufacture a car, from 12 hours to 93 minutes. 1943 Rear Adm. Shigematsu Sakaibara, commander of the Japanese garrison on Wake Island, orders the execution of 96 Americans POWs, claiming they were trying to make radio contact with U.S. forces. 1949 East Germany is created less than five months after Great Britain, the United States, and France established the Federal Republic of Germany in West Germany. The Democratic Republic of Germany is criticized by the West as an un-autonomous Soviet creation, Wilhelm Pieck was named East Germany's first president, with Otto Grotewohl as prime minister. 2001 War in Afghanistan begins as American and British troops began air strikes against Al Qaeda and Taliban targets after the Taliban refused to hand over Osama bin-Laden, the alleged mastermind of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and other Al Qaeda operatives, to the United States. Christopher Check, President of Catholic Answers, visited the campus of Aquinas College to lecture on the Battle of Lepanto and to discuss and recipe the famous G.K. Chesterton poem "Lepanto." The lecture was sponsored by the Aquinas Center for Faith and Culture, headed by literary critic and biographer Joseph Pearce. About the Battle of Lepanto On October 7, 1571, the most important sea battle in history was fought near the mouth of what is today called the Gulf of Patras, then the Gulf of Lepanto. On one side were the war galleys of the Holy League and on the other, those of the Ottoman Turks, rowed by tens of thousands of Christian galley slaves. Although the battle decided the future of Europe, few Europeans, and even fewer European Americans, know the story, much less how close Western Europe came to suffering an Islamic conquest. Three Hundred and Forty years later, On October 7, 1911, English poet and theologian G.K. Chesterton honored the battle with what is perhaps the greatest ballad of the 20th century. He wrote this extraordinary poem while the postman impatiently waited for the copy. It was instantly popular and remained so for years. The ballad is no less inspiring today and is more timely than ever, as the West faces the growing threat of Islam.
