Author, Prof. Joseph O'Connor talks about his new novel ‘Shadowplay’
Joseph O'Connor talks about his novel of Irish emigration at the time of the Famine, Star of the Sea with James Naughtie and readers. In the winter of 1847, the Star of the Sea sets sails from Ireland for New York. Among the refugees are a maidservant, a bankrupt aristocrat, an aspiring novelist and a maker of revolutionary ballads. As we learn each of their stories, we also learn how each is connected more deeply than they know. The novel has its roots in Connemara, with the characters being connected to the land and the sea. At the heart of the story is the threatening figure of Pius Mulvey – the balladeer and adventurer who turns bad as the story unfolds. As one reader asks, is Pius Mulvey Jack the Lad, or is he Jack the Ripper? Mulvey stalks the decks of the ship like some kind of embodiment of the tragedy that’s overtaken the old country. Joseph O’Connor explains how he created the character of Pius, his ambivalent relationship with Dickens who has a cameo role in the book, and how he has a connection to Connemara from childhood holidays; plus his hopes that the novel will keep the story of the Famine alive for the next generation of Irish people. Hallie Rubenhold with Joseph O’Connor Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine and Mary-Jane are famous for the same thing, though they never met. They came from Fleet Street, Knightsbridge, Wolverhampton, Sweden and Wales. They wrote ballads, ran coffee houses, lived on country estates, they breathed ink-dust from printing presses and escaped people-traffickers. What they had in common was the year of their murders – 1888 – and their murderer, the man known as Jack the Ripper. Author Hallie Rubenhold talks to Joseph O’Connor and sets the record straight, giving these women back their stories. Set just ten years previously, in his latest novel Shadowplay, O’Connor reveals the hidden stories of Bram Stoker’s life. Hallie Rubenhold is a former museum curator and social historian who has made her name by discovering and bringing to the public attention the stories of previously unknown women. Her first book, The Covent Garden Ladies, (The History Press, 2005) recounts the history of The Harris’s List of Covent Garden Ladies, the notorious 18th century guide to prostitutes. The Covent Garden Ladies has become a cult sensation and not only was the subject of a BBC 4 documentary presented by Hallie, but has been singlehandedly responsible for reviving an interest in the material amongst academics, artists, film makers, writers and designers. The Five has won numerous awards, including the Baillie Gifford prize for non fiction and the Goodreads Reader award. Novelist, screenwriter, playwright and broadcaster, Joseph O’Connor is the author of nine novels including Star of the Sea, Ghost Light (Dublin One City One Book novel 2011) and Shadowplay . Among his awards are the Prix Zepter for European Novel of the Year, France’s Prix Millepages, Italy’s Premio Acerbi, an American Library Association Award and the Irish Pen Award for Outstanding Achievement in Literature. His work has been translated into forty languages. In 2014 he was appointed Frank McCourt Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Limerick. Micro-acções e partir o problema em pedaços Porque é que a “força-bruta da disciplina” é um método limitado para alterarmos hábitos ou atingir objectivos Truques práticos (que funcionou como uma espécie de resumo) Obrigado aos mecenas do podcast: Gustavo Pimenta; Eduardo Correia de Matos Joana Faria Alves, Joao Manzarra, João Baltazar, Mafalda Lopes da Costa, Salvador Cunha, Tiago Leite, Duarte Dória, Carlos Martins Abilio Silva, António Padilha, Carmen Camacho, Daniel Correia, Diogo Sampaio Viana, Francisco Fonseca, Helder Miranda, Joao Saro, João Nelas, Mafalda Pratas, Rafael Melo, Rafael Santos, Ricardo Duarte, Rita Mateus, Tiago Neves Paixão, Tiago Queiroz, Tomás Costa, José Soveral, João Almeida, André Oliveira, João Silveira, Miguel Cabedo e Vasconcelos Duarte, Filipe Ribeiro, Francisco Aguiar , Francisco Arantes, Francisco dos Santos, Francisco Vasconcelos, Henrique Lopes Valença, Henrique Pedro, Hugo Correia, isosamep, Joana Margarida Alves Martins, Joao Diogo, Joao Pinto, Joao Salvado, Jose Pedroso, José Galinha, José Oliveira Pratas, JosÉ Proença, JoÃo Diogo Silva, JoÃo Moreira, JoÃo Raimundo, Luis Ferreira, Luis Marques, Luis Quelhas Valente, Marco Coelho, Mariana Barosa, Marise Almeida, Marta Baptista Coelho, Marta Madeira, Miguel Coimbra, Miguel Palhas, Nuno Gonçalves, Nuno Nogueira, Pedro, Pedro alagoa, Pedro Rebelo, Pedro Vaz, Renato Vasconcelos, Ricardo Delgadinho, rodrigo brazÃo, Rui Baldaia, Rui Carrilho, Rui Passos Rocha, Telmo, Tiago Costa da Rocha, Tiago Pires, Tomás Félix, Vasco Lima, Vasco Sá Pinto, Vitor Filipe, Ricardo Nogueira, Alexandre Almeida, Francisco Arantes, João Crispim, Paulo dos Santos, Élio Mateus, André Peralta Santos, João Pinho, Paulo Fuentez, Simão Morais, Andrea Grosso, Robertt, Fonsini, João Barbosa, Jose António Moreira, Luís Pereira, João Martins, Sérgio Catalão Esta conversa foi editada por: João Ervedosa Referências abordadas na conversa: Livro do convidado: Ainda Não Tive Tempo Deepwork, de Call Newport Flow Getting Things Done, de David Allen Filme: A Vida Secreta de Walter Mitty A importância de visualizar o objectivo What I Talk About When I Talk About Running: A Memoir, de Haruki Murakami Livro recomendado: De Dentro Para Fora - Uma Revolução Pessoal, de Michael Neill Bio: Licenciado em Engenharia, com experiência em gestão de projetos a nível internacional, especializou-se em Performance Organizacional, Produtividade Pessoal e Interpessoal, Comunicação, Liderança e Psicologia Motivacional. Joseph O’Connor, whose book Star of the Sea was critically acclaimed and a global bestseller, talks about his latest novel Shadowplay. Taking the well-known presumption that Bram Stoker based the character of Dracula on the Shakespearean actor Henry Irving, Shadowplay is about the close collaboration and intense friendship between Stoker, Irving and his famous acting partner Ellen Terry. Portuguese-born artist Dame Paula Rego's work across paint, pastel, etching and fabric is often based on children's folktales. But the animals and people that populate her work convey tough political messages. A new exhibition at the recently extended and remodelled MK gallery in Milton Keynes offers an edited retrospective of the 84 year old artist's substantial body of work. Art critic Louisa Buck reviews. Pauline Kael was a film critic renowned for her personal writing style that combined scathing wit and passion. In the week she would have turned 100, film critics Tim Robey and Gavia Baker Whitelaw consider her work, what makes a perfect review and the role of the critic in the digital age. Nuala O'Connor is an Emmy award Winning Irish Director and works closely with Writer Diarmaid Ferriter with whom she collaborated with on her first documentary feature, Keepers of the Flame. Keepers of the Flame is playing at the IFI this week. #SupportIrishFilmmaking Keepers of the Flame tells the universal story of generations dealing with the consequences of war and civil war; of what is remembered and what is forgotten. Keepers of the Flame delves into the archives of the Irish Military Service Pensions and what emerges is a truly personal retelling of a brutal and divisive period in the birth of a nation and the devastating legacy it left in its wake, for the individuals who took part and their families who suffered long after the fighting ended. More than 85,000 applied for the Irish Military Service Pension. Just over 18,000 received any payment. Keepers of the Flame examines the Irish journey in search of a collective courage to remember and acknowledge the deeds of the past, recognise the wrongs that were done, realise the context of the events and establish common ground to enable an understanding of who we are as a nation. It reveals just how problematic commemoration and remembrance can be – this is true of all wars but especially civil wars. The story is timely coming as it does in the run up to 100th anniversary of Ireland’s Civil War. Produced by Tina O’Reilly. Executive Producer Philip King. Director of Photography is by Colm Hogan, Sound by Bob Brennan and Editor is Eoin McDonagh Archive readings are performed by Mary Black, Aiden Gillen, Philip King, Aine Lawlor, Eoin McDonagh, Dermot McLoughlin, Aisling Ni Shúilleabháin, Joseph O’Connor, Olivia O’Leary, Iarla O’Lionaird and Marian Richardson. The soundtrack is composed by Colm Mac Con Iomaire. Keepers of the Flames is a South Wind Blows Production, made with the support of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, in association with the Irish Film Board/ Bord Scannáin na hÉireann and RTÉ.

Last year, Irish Times' reviewer Joseph O'Connor raved, “It’s hard to imagine a more exciting debut novel being published this year. This book is a stunning and wonderful achievement by a writer touched by greatness.” Surpisingly, the book was not written by Tim Taylor or by Mike Shevlin but written by Sara Baume from County Cork and the book is "Spill Simmer Falter Wither". On her first tour through the U.S. supporting the book, Sara visits the Windy City Irish Radio studio to discuss her career and her fantastic book about a man and his one-eyed dog. AND, there's music. Listen for a whole lotta banjo from County Meath's Damaris Woods, Galway's We Banjo 3 and NYC's The Narrowbacks, a Scottish three-fer from The Old Blind Dogs, Tannahill Weavers and the great Dougie MacLean, and tunes from Mary Black, The Henry Girls, and Glen Hansard. Join Mike and Tim each Wednesday night from 8 - 9 PM on WSBC 1240 AM or check out the podcast www.windycityirishradio.com.
