Joshua Gordon is a son, brother, husband to Sarah, dad to five children, lay pastor, author, and Senior Editor of theleadpastor.com. We're grateful that Joshua agreed to share a dad's response to the challenges of living in an economy of love. In our previous episode (#148), we challenged parents with these questions: If the kingdom of God is at hand, what's really changed in our homes? If the law is love now, what's different? If I trust the finished work of Jesus for my secure identity, how does that change my relationship with God? How does that change my relationship with myself? And with you? In this episode, Joshua Gordon admits we can be triggered when our children respond to us with an attitude instead of respect. Join us in this priceless and vulnerable conversation about navigating our emotions and personal narratives so that the child and our family benefit from the frustrating interaction instead of allowing it to weaken the relational fabric in our home. In our conversation with Joshua, we found wisdom and help for moving forward when our kids are disrespectful by discovering that many of our children's problems today: The books on our shelves don't have answers because they were written several years ago, and our culture is changing quickly. We can find the answers to these problems in conversations with God and others who rely on God in their own stories. We can also help our children listen to God and receive His help. Many of our children's problems are really invitations from God to abide with Him because they have roots in our own unresolved issues. Our children's problems are, in some ways, gifts that require us to ask, "Is my desperation or dependence on Jesus driving my response to this parenting crisis?" Then, we get to talk to God about why we depend on something less than our true identity (and our security with Him) when emotions get messy and problems are real. B stands for BEAUTY in THE CURATED LIFE alphabet because we're letting God be our narrative therapist and He is helping us draw a map out of the land of fear stories into the land of love stories. If you missed episode #128, "B is for BEAUTY," check it out! Our guest in this episode is Joshua Gordon. Josh is a lay pastor, husband, dad to five kids, business owner, and author of Antidote For My Anxiety. He writes honestly and openly about his journey of faith, and how Jesus brings change in areas of struggle, frustration, and difficulty. Join us in a new conversation about beauty where we invite you to trust these life-giving truths - Beauty gives me a great sense of honor. Beauty can transport us. It can lift our eyes from whatever mess we're in. Beauty is hope - and the sense of hope reminds me, “That's Jesus!” Joshua's book begins with “I have big feelings, and they are a target.” Isn't that where so many of our stories begin? Or where our stories get stuck? Today's conversation invites you to linger in these TAKEAWAYS: My feelings of stress, fear, etc... are signal flags indicating areas where Jesus needs my cooperation to further heal my heart. A vibrant, passionate relationship with Jesus (i.e., one where he has earned my trust... and I have risked giving it) most often grows in deeply uncomfortable circumstances. Jesus is my Antidote. I need to go back to Him again and again. And again. RUN! Don't dawdle to Lazarusbooks.com to buy your own copy of Antidote For My Anxiety and follow Josh on IG @joshuahgordon. On this episode of Raise the Line, we have the privilege of hearing from one of the nation's top healthcare leaders, Dr. Joshua Gordon, who is the director of the National Institute of Mental Health. In that role, he oversees an extensive portfolio of basic and clinical research that seeks to transform the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses, paving the way for prevention, recovery and cure. “Our main role is in trying to make sure that good science is conducted in the service of furthering public mental health,” he tells host Shiv Gaglani. One area of NIMH research that gets less attention than breakthrough medicines is how to make it easier for healthcare systems and practices to adopt best practices and proven treatments. This not only helps improve patient outcomes, but Gordon says it is one element in addressing feelings of a lack of effectiveness that contribute to provider burnout. “If we can increase individuals' efficacy by ensuring that they are trained in evidence-based approaches, and continue to make new treatments available to help those who aren't responding to the old ones, that's one way we can do that.” This is a rare opportunity to hear from a federal agency executive on some of the most pressing and interesting issues in healthcare including the shortage of providers, health equity, social determinants of health, telemedicine and the potential for psychedelics to treat mental health problems. One of five adults in the United States suffers from a diagnosable mental illness at any one point in time. The burden of psychiatric diseases is massive on both personal and economic levels. It was a great honor to talk to Dr. Joshua Gordon, director of the National Institute of Mental Health. We covered finding a balance between i) running this entity with a budget of 1.6 billion USD and 3000 grants at any one time and ii) pursuing his own research using optogenetic methods to dynamically modulate circuits in the brain. We talked about key strategies of the NIMH, such as the Research Domain Criteria Framework (RDoC) and it's evolution over the last decade up to the present day, the importance to balance between predictive and normativ/generative models, the importance of studying dynamics and to map symptoms to circuits in the brain. There are few if not any critically useful biomarkers we have in the field of psychiatry – we discussed why that is the case. Also, we dived into basic science vs. serendipitous discoveries and the power of either one (or the combination of the two) to move our field forward. Covering Dr. Gordon's own scientific agenda, we discussed the work of his lab on the dynamics between the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, as well as the significance of this work for models of anxiety and schizophrenia.

Anyone who didn't already have COVID fatigue probably has it now thanks to the Omicron variant. As the country sees increased cases and hospitalizations, people are also forced to adjust to restrictions and cancellations that are rapidly multiplying as well. Psychologically -- It's all hard to take. Dr. Joshua Gordon, the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, discusses how the stress of the pandemic is impacting Americans and offers advice on how you can help yourself and family members who continue to struggle with their mental health as the pandemic enters a third year. A major moment of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics came when USA Olympic gymnast and four-time gold medalist Simone Biles withdrew from her remaining events, citing mental health reasons. This unprecedented decision was met with criticism, however, Biles received an outpouring of support from fellow athletes, gymnasts, and Americans at large. Three-time USA Olympic gymnast and gold medalist Dominique Dawes joined us shortly after Bile's controversial withdrawal to share her experience as a young Olympian. Today, we look back at our interview with Dawes from July 30th where she explained why she thought Simone Biles likely made this difficult decision, she describes the pressure athletes face and also shares her goal of changing the negative mental health environment surrounding gymnastics. Plus, commentary by former Rep. Jason Chaffetz, host of the Jason in the House podcast.
