The NCAA Board of Governors is reviewing the executive order and will take necessary steps to align NCAA policy in the coming days, subject to further guidance from the administration.”Sweden went through their worst mass shooting in history with 11 people, including the gunman, dead. Five others were seriously injured and underwent surgery that day. The shooting happened last Tuesday, Feb. 4 at an adult education center in the town of Örebro. Adriana McLamb is the marketing director at Independent Women's Forum, where she oversees all of IWF's social media and digital campaign strategies and execution. Prior to joining IWF, McLamb spent almost five years working for the Stand Together Community, where she led and contributed to digital marketing strategies for their grassroots brands both at the national and state level. Broadly, he is interested in neurology and expanding our understanding of basic cellular processes in neurons, such as how elements of the neuronal cytoskeleton contribute to axon pathfinding and proper synapse formation. While passionate about research and medicine, he believes it's important to lead a fulfilled life outside of work; Swann enjoys spending his free time sampling local restaurants with friends, making music, watching reality tv shows, and exercising. --

There was no carryover from Saturday night's melee, triggered by a fight at second base between Chicago's Tim Anderson and Cleveland's José Ramírez. Major League Baseball is still reviewing the Anderson-Ramírez altercation. Both players face likely multigame suspensions. The White Sox were down to their final strike in the series finale before rallying against closer Emmanuel Clase. After three straight makes to begin the shootout, the U.S. missed three of its next four. The loss marks the worst finish ever for the Americans at the Women's World Cup. NASCARFireKeepers Casino 400 Postponed Due To RainBad weather is forcing NASCAR to postpone its Cup Series race in Brooklyn, Michigan to Monday afternoon. Tyler Reddick is leading the FireKeepers Casino 400 after 74 of the 200 laps were completed following a nearly two-hour rain delay. Alex Bowman, Kyle Larson, Martin Truex Jr., and Erik Jones round out the top five. Kyle Busch, Chase Elliot, William Byron and Josh Berry all suffered crashes and will not finish the contest once it resumes. The race continues from Michigan International Speedway at noon Eastern. NCAA Wants Proposal In October For Athlete CompensationThe NCAA Division I Board of Directors has directed the D-I Council to deliver a proposal in October to regulate the way college athletes can be compensated for name, image and likeness. The NCAA Board of Governors also announced that beginning this year all college athletes will have access to health insurance two years after their eligibility expires. All that came on the same day the NCAA released the results of a business review that encouraged the association to find more creative ways to support member schools. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Minnesota Twins 5, Detroit Tigers 4 Kansas City Royals 6, Chicago White Sox 0 Atlanta Braves 3, Chicago Cubs 1 Twins 5, Tigers 4 – Tigers throw it away: Wild toss in 9th gives Twins crazy win Detroit catcher Eric Haase made a throwing error on a botched rundown, capping a chaotic play that gave the Minnesota Twins two runs for a 5-4 win over the Tigers. Miguel Sanó had the final hit for the Twins — and his ill-advised baserunning wound up helping them win their fifth in a row. The Twins trailed 4-3 when Detroit closer Gregory Soto walked Trevor Larnach and Gio Urshela to start the inning. With one out, Sanó hit a line drive that glanced off right fielder Robbie Grossman’s glove and rolled to the wall for a rocket of a single. Larnach was held up at third base, but Sanó kept running toward second and Twins runners seemed trapped. But Haase throw soared over third baseman Jeimer Candelario’s head and two runs scored. Royals 6, White Sox 0 – Lynch shines as Royals blank slumping White Sox 6-0 Daniel Lynch pitched six crisp innings and the Kansas City Royals handed the Chicago White Sox their eighth straight loss with a 6-0 victory. Bobby Witt Jr. had two hits and Carlos Santana drove in two runs, helping Kansas City stop a four-game slide. The Royals were outscored 22-12 in a sweep at Seattle over the weekend. Lynch allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked two. The White Sox issued 11 walks and committed two more errors, running their major league-leading total to 20. It’s the longest losing streak for Chicago since it dropped eight in a row in June 2018. Braves 3, Cubs 1 – Demeritte, Fried lead Braves to needed win, 3-1 over Cubs Travis Demeritte hit his first big league homer in nearly three years and made a sliding catch to back another strong outing by Max Fried. That gave the Atlanta Braves a much-needed 3-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The reigning World Series champions won for only the third time in their last eight games. The Cubs have now lost six of seven. Fried pitched four-hit ball over six innings. His only big mistake was a changeup that Ian Happ took deep leading off the third. Demeritte broke up a 1-1 tie in the fifth with a homer into the Chop House restaurant off Marcus Stroman. The White Sox expect Jiménez to return in six to eight weeks. Jiménez got hurt during Saturday’s 9-2 loss at Minnesota when he stretched for first base while running out a grounder to third. The 25-year-old slugger stumbled after the play and his right knee appeared to lock up. Jiménez’s injury is similar to the one that sidelined White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal for almost two months last season. NCAA – NCAA President Mark Emmert stepping down no later than 2023 NCAA President Mark Emmert is stepping down after 12 years on the job. NCAA Board of Governors Chairman John DeGioia announced the move and said it was by mutual agreement. Emmert will continue to serve in his role until a new president is selected and in place or until June 30, 2023. Emmert was appointed to the job in April 2010. He had led the University of Washington and LSU prior to taking over at the NCAA. The job has changed radically since then. Golf – The Open – Record crowd of nearly 300K expected for Open at St. Andrews The British Open had a modest return of fans last year because of the pandemic. Now it’s full capacity and the R&A expects a record turnout for St. Andrews this summer. Organizers anticipate 290,000 spectators at the Old Course. That would smash the record of 239,000 at St. Andrews in 2000 when Tiger Woods completed the career Grand Slam. Woods will be back at St. Andrews for the sixth time. The 24-year-old, who snapped a five-game goal drought, is the first player to score 60 times in a campaign since Steven Stamkos in 2011-12. John Tavares had the other goal and Jack Campbell made 20 saves to register his fifth shutout of the season for Toronto (53-21-7), which set a franchise record with its 30th home victory of the season. William Nylander added two assists. Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 33 shots for Detroit (31-40-10). Tonight Vegas Golden Knights at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30 p.m. NHL – Customs seizes counterfeit 1936 Red Wings’ Stanley Cup rings U.S. Customs and Border Protection has seized 10 counterfeit Stanley Cup rings for the 1936 Detroit Red Wings championship team due to trademark violations. Customs officers at the Port of Champlain facility in New York found the rings valued at $15,000 earlier this month after examining a shipment. CBP said the shipment violated the intellectual property rights of the Red Wings’ trademark. The 1936 Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Cup Final. NFL – Lions exercise 5th-year option on tight end T.J. Hockenson The Detroit Lions have exercised their fifth-year option on tight end T.J. Hockenson. A first-round pick in 2019 out of Iowa, Hockenson has 160 receptions for 1,673 yards and 12 touchdowns in his three seasons. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2020. NFL – Bears GM Ryan Poles interested in acquiring more draft picks With so many roster holes heading into his first NFL draft, Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles is looking closely for trade partners so the team can acquire more picks. The Bears have six picks and none in the first or fourth rounds. Poles doesn’t necessarily view it as a situation where he’s pressured to find a receiver or offensive lineman in a particular spot to help quarterback Justin Fields. But he is looking to elevate the team overall. Poles likens what he has done with the roster so far to what he and his wife see on home-improvement shows on television. NFL – Fountains, scubas, slot machines, Ferris wheel and NFL draft NFL draft night on Thursday will include prospects walking a red carpet above the Bellagio fountains, a theater built specifically for the proceedings where they hope to hear their names called early, and the aura of gambling everywhere. It’s a different look for a league that long shunned any association with betting. There’s no question this draft has the flavor of Sin City. The league seems very pleased about that. The draft will also spotlight the league’s partnership with casino company Caesars Entertainment. IIHF – Russia removed as host of 2023 worlds in men’s ice hockey Russia has been removed as host of the 2023 world championship in men’s ice hockey. The tournament was to be played in Vladimir Putin’s home city St. Petersburg. The International Ice Hockey Federation cites “concern for the safety and well-being of all participating players, officials, media, and fans” for the decision. It was the latest blow to Russia in its favored winter sports in the fallout from the country’s war on Ukraine. Ice hockey’s decision comes one day after Russia’s signature annual international figure skating competition was pulled. Tennis – Djokovic can play at Wimbledon; no vaccination required The All England Club says Novak Djokovic will be allowed to defend his title at Wimbledon despite not being vaccinated against COVID-19 because the shots are not required to enter Britain. Djokovic is a 34-year-old from Serbia who is ranked No. 1. He missed the Australian Open in January after being deported from that country because he had not received the vaccination against the illness caused by the coronavirus. Wimbledon starts on June 27. All England Club Chief Executive Sally Bolton said during Tuesday’s annual briefing that vaccination will not be a condition of entry for players to compete at the Grand Slam tournament this year. Tennis – Wimbledon defends ‘agonizing decision’ to ban Russians All England Club officials are defending the decision to bar players from Russia and Belarus from Wimbledon this year because of the invasion of Ukraine. Club Chief Executive Sally Bolton says there is a responsibility to limit the possibility of Russians’ success at Wimbledon being used as a propaganda tool by that country. Reigning U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev is among the prominent players affected by the ban. Medvedev recently reached No. 1 in the rankings and is currently No. 2. After Russia attacked Ukraine in February — with help from Belarus — tennis players from Russia and Belarus were able to continue competing but as “neutral” athletes not formally representing their nations. Horse Racing – 2nd horse in 2 days dies in training at Santa Anita A filly has died after suffering a training injury at Santa Anita in what is the track’s second such death in two days and fifth this year. According to the California Horse Racing Board, the 4-year-old filly named Cayton Kid suffered a musculoskeletal injury at the Arcadia track. A 3-year-old filly named Magnolia suffered the same type of training injury Monday and was euthanized. Of the five deaths at Santa Anita this year, four happened during training and one during a race. That’s down sharply from the 42 horse deaths at the track in 2019, which prompted a slew of rules changes. A 3-year-old filly named Magnolia suffered the same type of training injury Monday and was euthanized. Tonight Vegas Golden Knights at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30 p.m. NHL – Customs seizes counterfeit 1936 Red Wings’ Stanley Cup rings U.S. Customs and Border Protection has seized 10 counterfeit Stanley Cup rings for the 1936 Detroit Red Wings championship team due to trademark violations. Customs officers at the Port of Champlain facility in New York found the rings valued at $15,000 earlier this month after examining a shipment. CBP said the shipment violated the intellectual property rights of the Red Wings’ trademark. The 1936 Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Cup Final. NFL – Lions exercise 5th-year option on tight end T.J. Hockenson The Detroit Lions have exercised their fifth-year option on tight end T.J. Hockenson. A first-round pick in 2019 out of Iowa, Hockenson has 160 receptions for 1,673 yards and 12 touchdowns in his three seasons. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2020. NFL – Bears GM Ryan Poles interested in acquiring more draft picks With so many roster holes heading into his first NFL draft, Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles is looking closely for trade partners so the team can acquire more picks. The Bears have six picks and none in the first or fourth rounds. Poles doesn’t necessarily view it as a situation where he’s pressured to find a receiver or offensive lineman in a particular spot to help quarterback Justin Fields. But he is looking to elevate the team overall. Poles likens what he has done with the roster so far to what he and his wife see on home-improvement shows on television. NFL – Fountains, scubas, slot machines, Ferris wheel and NFL draft NFL draft night on Thursday will include prospects walking a red carpet above the Bellagio fountains, a theater built specifically for the proceedings where they hope to hear their names called early, and the aura of gambling everywhere. It’s a different look for a league that long shunned any association with betting. There’s no question this draft has the flavor of Sin City. The league seems very pleased about that. The draft will also spotlight the league’s partnership with casino company Caesars Entertainment. IIHF – Russia removed as host of 2023 worlds in men’s ice hockey Russia has been removed as host of the 2023 world championship in men’s ice hockey. The tournament was to be played in Vladimir Putin’s home city St. Petersburg. The International Ice Hockey Federation cites “concern for the safety and well-being of all participating players, officials, media, and fans” for the decision. It was the latest blow to Russia in its favored winter sports in the fallout from the country’s war on Ukraine. Ice hockey’s decision comes one day after Russia’s signature annual international figure skating competition was pulled. Tennis – Djokovic can play at Wimbledon; no vaccination required The All England Club says Novak Djokovic will be allowed to defend his title at Wimbledon despite not being vaccinated against COVID-19 because the shots are not required to enter Britain. Djokovic is a 34-year-old from Serbia who is ranked No. 1. He missed the Australian Open in January after being deported from that country because he had not received the vaccination against the illness caused by the coronavirus. Wimbledon starts on June 27. All England Club Chief Executive Sally Bolton said during Tuesday’s annual briefing that vaccination will not be a condition of entry for players to compete at the Grand Slam tournament this year. Tennis – Wimbledon defends ‘agonizing decision’ to ban Russians All England Club officials are defending the decision to bar players from Russia and Belarus from Wimbledon this year because of the invasion of Ukraine. Club Chief Executive Sally Bolton says there is a responsibility to limit the possibility of Russians’ success at Wimbledon being used as a propaganda tool by that country. Reigning U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev is among the prominent players affected by the ban. Medvedev recently reached No. 1 in the rankings and is currently No. 2. After Russia attacked Ukraine in February — with help from Belarus — tennis players from Russia and Belarus were able to continue competing but as “neutral” athletes not formally representing their nations. Horse Racing – 2nd horse in 2 days dies in training at Santa Anita A filly has died after suffering a training injury at Santa Anita in what is the track’s second such death in two days and fifth this year. According to the California Horse Racing Board, the 4-year-old filly named Cayton Kid suffered a musculoskeletal injury at the Arcadia track. A 3-year-old filly named Magnolia suffered the same type of training injury Monday and was euthanized. Of the five deaths at Santa Anita this year, four happened during training and one during a race. That’s down sharply from the 42 horse deaths at the track in 2019, which prompted a slew of rules changes. On January 19, the NCAA Board of Governors voted to replace its 10-year-old Transgender Student-Athlete Inclusion policy with a completely new policy based loosely on the forthcoming International Olympic Committee set to take effect in March. The NCAA's new policy instituted immediately in the middle of a competitive season and it will immediately have to be used. A transgender woman in the University of Pennsylvania, Lia Thomas has two confirmed A-cut qualifying marks in the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta in March. But the questions are on the table: What will the next policy look like, and how it will affect Thomas competing, and how will this affect in issue with is raging from college athletic departments to 38 state legislatures. The annual NCAA Convention is this week and it is one of the most important gatherings of Association membership in the modern history of the NCAA. While a lot of eyes will be on Division I, all three Divisions must vote on a new NCAA Constitution. Division III has played an important role in crafting the new constitution as those in the division try and position DIII for the future. And while the new NCAA Constitution will garner much of the attention this week in Indianapolis, it isn't the only piece of business that Division III needs to consider. There are a number of pieces of legislation DIII presidents, commissioners, and athletics directors will debate and likely vote on as well. Some of those items could have huge impacts on Division III including the sport of basketball. David Ridpath joins Tim to talk about some recent court rulings, rule changes and other decisions that have cleared the way for college athletes to get paid. Dave is a Sport Management professor at Ohio University, and he's an expert on NCAA governance, academic issues and athlete rights. The focus of this conversation is how paying athletes will change the NCAA landscape for athletes, fans, universities and marketers. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/NCAA_NIL_Branding_auphonic.mp3 In June of this year, the U.S. Supreme Court came down with a decision against the NCAA that now paves the way for college athletes to be paid. But it's not that simple. The court decided only on education-related benefits, and not broader compensation matters. Not long after that, the NCAA Board of Directors approved changes that will now clear the way for college athletes to start earning money based on the fame and celebrity they achieve. But they can earn that money without the risk of losing their eligibility or putting their own schools or sports programs at risk of violating amateurism rules. Here's what happened. The Supreme Court ruled against the National Collegiate Athletic Association in an antitrust case. The ruling now limits the NCAA's rights to bar college athletes from getting paid. The Court allowed non-cash compensation for college athletes. In its ruling, the court said the NCAA violated antitrust rules. It said athletes should be paid for education-related benefits. The court did not rule on the larger compensation issues. The NCAA had built its case around the idea that limits on athlete pay do not violate antitrust laws because they encourage consumer choice. They said that their restrictions are what distinguish college athletics, or amateur status, from professional athletics. At the end of June, the NCAA decided to suspend its restrictions on payments to athletes for things like sponsorship deals, online endorsements, personal appearances. In other words, athletes can no make money on their name, image and likeness for marketing purposes. Keep that in mind as we talk to our guest today. The NCAA decision applies to all athletes across all of its divisions – Division One, Division Two and Division three athletes. That's' roughly 460,000 college athletes in the United States. In fact, most of those athletes won't see a big difference in their finances, but a few of the most elite athletes will. Trustees and Presidents- Opportunities and Challenges In Intercollegiate Athletics
The NCAA is failing college football. In August 2020, college sports leaders witnessed the limits of the power that NCAA President Mark Emmert has to control the five most visible Conferences--the ACC, the Big Ten, the Big 12, the Pac-12 and the SEC. In the span of 24 hours, two conferences announced they were not going to play their fall sports schedules-the Big Ten and the Pac-12. As of the mid-August, the ACC, the Big 12 and the SEC have continued to operate as if they are planning to play their fall schedules. I invited Nancy Zimpher to the podcast to talk about where we are in NCAA Division I athletics today. Nancy has been the Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, President of the University of Cincinnati, and the Chancellor of the SUNY (State Universities of New York) System. She has served on the NCAA Board of Governors, and is currently a member of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. She chairs the Governance subcommittee for the Knight Commission, which is currently examining proposals for new models for Division I college athletics. She and her colleague at the Knight Commission, former MLB CFO Jonathan Mariner, co-authored an article for MarketWatch about the challenges facing big time college sports and the revenue crisis facing the Power 5 conferences. Nancy is currently leading an institute through the Association of Governing Boards that develops new college Presidents. It's been a long time coming for athletes and the process of being able to get paid for name and likeness but its finally here.NCAA Board of Governors member Nicholas Clark provides insight on how the NCAA came to the conclusion that this in fact was the right thing to do. Although sports are on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, the NCAA is making strides to help solidify new rules around paying student athletes. The NCAA Board of Governors has announced that it supports rule changes that would allow student athlete compensation for third party endorsements and promotions related to and separate from athletics. The stage for this progress was set by California SB206, the Fair Pay For Play Act. California State Assemblyman Steve Bradford is one of the sponsors of this bill and he joins us to talk about it on This Lady Loves Sports.

Jacqie McWilliams Commissioner of the CIAA spent nine years at the NCAA, managing NCAA championships. She was a student-athlete at Hampton University where she was a champion basketball and volleyball player. Jacqie earned a BA in Psychology from Hampton University and a Masters degree in Sports Management and Administration from Temple University. She currently serves on the board for Women Leaders in College Sports, NCAA Board Ad Hoc Committee for Cultural Diversity, and NCAA Board of Governors Federal and State Legislation Working Group. She was the first female to serve as Commissioner for the CIAA and first appointed African American Commissioner out of 100 Conferences representing NCAA Division I, II and III. Jacqie spent nine years at the NCAA managing NCAA championships to include both the men’s and women’s Division I Basketball tournaments. She started her career in coaching and administration at Virginia Union University with career growth opportunities at Norfolk State University and Morgan State University prior to the NCAA. Jacqie earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Hampton University, a Master of Arts in Sports Management and Administration from Temple University. She is a member of the Hampton University 1988 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship team and was inducted into Hampton University’s Athletic Hall of Fame. She was inducted into Temple University’s Gallery of Success and the Sierra High School Hall of Fame. Jacqie served as the chair of NCAA DII Management Council and was a member of the NCAA Board of Governors while in that seat. Her passion to advance women provided her the opportunity to also serve on the board of directors for Women Leaders in College sports and the Collegiate Women’s Sports Award (CWSA). She has received numerous awards to include the Black Women in Sports Foundation Legend Award (2013), Radio One Women of Excellence (2016), Charlotte Career Mastered Award (2016), the café Mocha Salute Her Trailblazer Award in Charlotte (2017). In the book YOU THROW LIKE A GIRL former NFL and College All American quarterback Don McPherson asserts that men’s violence against women is a men’s issue writing that The propensity for violence is internalized in boys through their socialization.” He says that the blind spot of masculinity is the defense of narrowly defined masculinity that keeps men from living a whole, complete version of themselves. Using his experiences as an athlete McPherson lays out the privileged place of men in society and how one’s privilege could be the cause of another’s oppression. Don McPherson began his work on gender-based violence prevention in 1994 at Northeastern University’s Center for the Study of Sport in Society. He has served on the boards of the Ms.Foundation for Women, the NCAA Sexual Assault Task Force, and the NCAA Board of Governors Commission to Combat Campus Sexual Violence.

Jacqie McWilliams became the first female commissioner of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 2012. As the first African American female commissioner in the NCAA, McWilliams is a sought after speaker and is recognized on a local, regional, and national level. She has served on numerous boards, and currently sits on Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards, John B. McLendon Foundation Board, NCAA Board of Governor’s Cultural Diversity Committee, Hampton Nation Advisory Board, M&F Advisory Board and the Black Enterprise Charlotte Convention Steering Committee. She is active in her church community and chairs the HBCU initiative committee for the Crown Jewel’s LINKS of Charlotte, of which she is a member. The CIAA conference, based in Charlotte, N.C., consists of 13 Division II institutions. Twelve of those schools are historically black colleges and universities. The annual CIAA basketball tournament, the largest of 16 CIAA championships in a variety of sports, features 22 men’s and women’s games in the same week. It generates more than $55 million in economic impact for the host city. McWilliams earned a bachelor’s in psychology from Hampton University, where she played basketball and volleyball. She earned a master’s in sports management and administration from Temple University and went on to work as a college coach and administrator for the NCAA.
