Prisoners' Justice Day (Aug. 10) is a day to show solidarity for people inside Canadian prisons, remember all the people who have died of unnatural deaths while incarcerated and help those in custody overcome barriers to justice. Host Jeff Douglas spoke with Renford Farrier, who was recently granted parole after over three decades in federal prison, and Emma Halpern, the executive director of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia, about the day.

Karen Crews' husband Jerry has spent over 30 of his 55 years incarcerated. He was convicted for the 1990 First Degree Murder of Edmonton Police Constable Ezio Faraone. She spoke to Jeff Douglas about what International Prisoners' Justice Day means to Jerry and others like him.

The Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia held a speaking circle to mark Prisoners Justice Day, which is recognized internationally each year. The formerly incarcerated women shared their experiences of being in prison, while advocates offered their own observations.

Christians don't wait to gleefully see evil ones punished in eternity. They pray and work for even the most evil to come to faith in Christ. Consider how he has forgiven us… Now let us bring that good news to even "the vilest offender" that they may believe and find grace.

Words from the Psalms and from Paul remind us of the sobering truth that evil will ultimately be punished by God in eternity. If we believe in the Christian view of eternal life… than surely this is good enough.

Like Jesus, true Christians are to be committed to bringing justice to their communities. As John Wesley taught, our holiness comes from our works of piety, and our works of mercy. Be sure to do both, as you seek to be like Christ!

God weeps at the injustice in this evil world. Do we? If we are aiming for a heart like the heart of Jesus… we must.

Churches with no concern for justice are, according to Scripture, hated by God. Let us not lose our focus - for our mission is to be committed to justice as our God is.

This week, we will go over the history of Prison Abuse in Canada and about the efforts to bring these crimes to the attention of those on the outside. Bob Gaucher in recognized for his abilities in the field of championing Prison Justice and abolition in Canada. He explains some of the background of suppression of rights historically. We then hear from Montreal based organizer Johanne Wendy Bariteau and from Vancouver based organizer Meenakshi Mannoe about the struggles in those two communities and about the Prison Justice Day events they held.

Join Scripps College juniors Shirley Zhong and Rose Gelfand on a journey of learning about the intersectional and interconnected natures of fat and disability studies, and discuss how fat and disabled communities can find power together! Shirley is a Feminist Gender and Sexuality Studies major passionate about critical disability studies and animation. For Disability Justice Day Shirley invited her friend Rose to discuss her art and activist work for fat liberation. Rose is a poet, dancer, and student from Richmond, California. Last year Rose published a series of three original zines, which explore the intersections of fatness, queerness, dance, the internet, sexual violence, desirability politics and embodied experience. She also is a member of Fat Rose, a fat liberationist movement group that aims to connect fat liberation with all other liberation movements.

Every year on August 10th, both inside and outside of jails and prisons across Canada, prisoners and their supporters mark Prisoners Justice Day. We spoke with Veronica, an anarchist in Montreal who is part of organizing the annual NYE noise demos in Laval. We discuss the history of Prisoners Justice Day, what has changed since the 70s, how PJD will marked and articulated this year, recuperation by Liberal governments, anarchist approaches to prisoner solidarity, and how to get started. Today we bring you an episode of a brand-new podcast miniseries entitled "What Happened to Prisoner Justice Day?" about the history of prisons in canada focusing on differences in the prison system in the 1960s-1980s versus today. The podcast features interviews with former and current prisoners, as well as supporters on the outside. "In [this] episode, we talk to Gene, who started doing time in canadian prisons in 1972. Gene talks to us about the early days of PJD on the inside and the role that inmates committees and outside support played in prisoner resistance in the 70s and 80s. He talks a bit about protective custody or PC, and how changes to protective custody policies in federal prisons undermined solidarity. At the end of the show, we mention the website penalpress.com. The podcast features interviews with former and current prisoners, as well as supporters on the outside. For those new to prison history, Prisoner Justice Day, also called PJD, started in 1975 on the one year anniversary of the death of Edward Nalon, an inside organizer who bled to death in a segregation cell in Millhaven Maximum Penitentiary on August 10th, 1974. Prisoners refused to eat and refused to work to commemorate Eddie's death. In May 1976, Robert Landers, who had been actively organizing in Archambault Pen before being involuntarily transferred to Millhaven, died in a segregation cell in Millhaven after repeated calls for medical help met no response. In June 1976, prisoners in Millhaven launched a call for support for their one day hunger strike in remembrance of all prisoners who had died inside - to take place on August 10th. Word spread across the country and, in the end, thousands of prisoners participated in the one day hunger strike and supporters on the outside organized events on the outside. A lot has changed since the 70s, not just in prison, but outside of prison. While respecting PJD remains important to many on the inside and outside, the numbers of those participating are nowhere near the numbers involved in the 70s and 80s. What a privilege it was to welcome Mary and Wallace Kamau (from Missions of Hope International) for Justice Day 2019. How incredible, that the school they started with 50 kids in 2000 has grown into a ministry that now serves over 18,000 children in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya. Well worth watching.
