As the geopolitical landscape constantly shifts, former Moroccan Prime Minister El-Othmani has surprisingly taken a stand to defend normalization with Israel. Sister Liz Sjoberg's running journey started out as an interest and need to improve her health and lose weight, but over the years, it became a strong and steady force in her life. Running became something she enjoyed; the sport became a pathway not only to physical health, but also psychological and spiritual health. As Sister Liz said, it opened a whole new world to her. As her interest in running grew, Sister Liz built up to running marathons, and added a fundraising element to her running. Thus was born Sisters on the Run. Over the past few years, Sister Liz, in the company of a growing number of participants both in person and virtually, has raised money for the community organization she serves in Brownsville, Texas, Proyecto Juan Diego. PJD provides low-income families in the Lower Rio Grande Valley with a wide variety of support and guidance, in realms such as health, education, and immigration. This year, 2024, Sister Liz will serve as race director for the first ever chip-timed Sisters on the Run event: a 5k and 1-mile walk/run. The event takes place Saturday, January 27, in Brownsville. This is a virtual and in-person event, and it does raise funds for PJD. Earlier on that day, beginning at 5am, Sister Liz will be contributing to the running efforts in a slightly different way: she will, once again, run a marathon, accompanied by whomever wants to join her. And that is what this story is ultimately all about: how running is both personal and can be so much more. En décembre 2020, le Maroc rétablissait ses relations avec Israël dans le cadre d'accords de coopération connus sous le nom d'« Accords d'Abraham », rapprochement aujourd'hui mis à l'épreuve par la guerre à Gaza et vivement dénoncé par la société civile. Comment les autorités gèrent-elles ces tensions ? Quelles répercussions ont-elles sur l'application de ces accords ? Entretien avec le journaliste Jamal Amiar. RFI : L'application des Accords d'Abraham a-t-elle été gelée par les autorités marocaines après le déclenchement par Israël de la guerre contre Gaza ?Jamal Amiar : Non. On ne peut pas dire que ces relations ont été gelées. Ce qu'on peut dire, c'est que maintenant, il y a moins de choses au niveau bilatéral qui se passent au vu de la guerre régionale là-bas entre Israéliens et Palestiniens. Quelques jours encore après l'attaque du 7 octobre et le déclenchement des représailles israéliennes, il y a eu la signature d'accords ici au Maroc entre les ministres marocain et israélien de l'Agriculture. Donc, non, il n'y a pas de gel et s'il se passe des choses au niveau bilatéral, on ne va pas beaucoup en parler vu l'atmosphère de guerre. Cela étant, ce que j'ai pu apprendre au cours de ces dernières semaines, c'est que les choses qui étaient en cours avant le 7 octobre continuent d'être discutées, continuent d'être négociées, notamment tout ce qui est en rapport avec l'économie, les affaires et les investissements.Donc trois ans après, la communication est beaucoup plus discrète, mais les Accords d'Abraham continuent à être appliqués entre Israël et le Maroc ?Tout à fait. Ils continuent d'être appliqués bien sûr.Mais quel bilan peut-on faire justement trois ans après de ce que ces accords ont permis ?Ces accords en trois ans ont permis une véritable accélération de la coopération bilatérale dans tous les domaines : l'économie, le sécuritaire, le militaire, le touristique, les nouvelles technologies, l'agriculture. Il y a des projets de coopération au niveau de l'industrie militaire, pour la fabrication de drones par exemple. Il y a des investissements dans le tourisme. Il y a des « joint-ventures » au niveau des nouvelles technologies. Il y a des accords d'échanges universitaires très importants entre une douzaine d'universités israéliennes et marocaines, des échanges culturels très importants. La première fois que le grand théâtre Habima de Tel Aviv a joué dans un pays arabe, c'était à Rabat l'an dernier.Donc, ce qui a changé dans l'application de ces accords depuis l'attaque du Hamas du 7 octobre, c'est a priori plus de discrétion ?Oui. On va dire plus de discrétion, un certain attentisme. Mais ces relations sont solides et sont basées sur des fondamentaux qui sont solides.À quel point l'attaque du Hamas le 7 octobre et la guerre déclarée contre Gaza par Israël ont-elles réveillé la cause palestinienne au Maroc ?La cause palestinienne au Maroc a toujours été importante dans le sens où, à chaque fois qu'il y a des affrontements sérieux en Cisjordanie ou bien entre les forces israéliennes et le Hamas ou le Jihad islamique, il y a toujours eu des réactions. Il y en a eu bien avant le 7 octobre par exemple en 2023. Il y en a eu en mars avec un fameux communiqué du parti du PJD [parti de la justice et du développement]. Il y a eu régulièrement des rassemblements de protestation contre la normalisation. Mais là, il est vrai que ce qui se passe depuis le 7 octobre est d'une autre dimension. Ça a créé depuis le 7 octobre la tenue de plusieurs manifestations chaque semaine dans de nombreuses villes marocaines, c'est-à-dire qu'il n'y a pas une manifestation par ville par semaine, il y en a deux ou trois. Et il est clair que la cause palestinienne est centrale comme ailleurs. Regardez ce qui se passe aux États-Unis, regardez ce qui se passe à Londres.Quelles sont les forces sociales et politiques au Maroc qui s'efforcent de tirer profit de cette nouvelle crise israélo-palestinienne ?Clairement, les islamistes d'abord. Puis le PJD parce qu'il est en chute libre, il a perdu beaucoup de ses députés. Et il a regretté que le Premier ministre du PJD ait été le Premier ministre qui a signé les accords de rétablissement des relations diplomatiques entre le Maroc et Israël. Puis, Al Adl Wal Ihsane [justice et bienfaisance, mouvement islamiste marocain non reconnu, mais toléré, NDLR] qui essaie aussi de mobiliser là-dessus.Est-ce qu'elles y parviennent ? Est-ce qu'elles rencontrent un certain écho ?Oui, elles rencontrent un certain écho. Ce qu'on peut dire, c'est que les manifestations regroupées au début dans les grandes villes comme Rabat ou Casablanca, 150 000 personnes. Cela fait dix semaines que la guerre continue, que les manifestations sont convoquées. Et aujourd'hui, on a des chiffes qui sont beaucoup plus bas.Au moment de la signature des Accords d'Abraham, les autorités de Rabat envisageaient de mettre en avant les points de jonction, une culture commune judéo-marocaine. Est-ce qui vient de se passer met cette démarche en péril ?Il y a un risque. Il ne faut pas se le cacher parce que cette guerre raidit les appréciations que l'on peut avoir de l'autre. Donc, oui, l'impact est réel et sur le Maroc, il y a des gens qui réfléchissent déjà à ça parce que, ici, il y a un héritage judéo-musulman qui est très important, qui a été revalorisé depuis une vingtaine d'années d'un patrimoine culturel. À la Une ce mercredi matin, la rencontre entre le roi du Maroc Mohamed VI et une délégation américano-israélienne menée par le gendre de Donald Trump, Jared Kushner. C'est la concrétisation de la normalisation des rapports entre le Maroc et Israël annoncée il y a quelques jours. La délégation est arrivée dans le premier vol reliant Tel Aviv à Rabat. « Une nouvelle page est ouverte » titre Aujourd'hui au Maroc. La presse marocaine revient largement sur ce qu'a obtenu le royaume avec cet accord tripartite, à savoir la reconnaissance par les États-Unis de la souveraineté du pays sur la zone du Sahara. Mais il y a aussi une dimension économique, explique l'hebdomadaire Tel Quel. Washington va financer des investissements privés au Maroc et en Afrique subsaharienne à hauteur de 3 milliards de dollars. Le Royaume chérifien et Israël ont également noué des accords notamment dans la gestion et l'aménagement de l'eau, explique le journal sur son site internet. Mais ces signatures suscitent quelques questions en terme de politique intérieure au Maroc Le site d'information Yabiladi se demande comment le Premier ministre Saad Eddine el-Othmani, issu du parti islamiste PJD, va se sortir de cette situation. Le site rappelle que le 23 août dernier, il avait affirmé que la normalisation des relations avec Israël était une ligne rouge à ne pas franchir. Or, c'est lui qui a signé hier les accords avec l'État hébreu. « Le PJD avale la cigüe », ironise Yabiladi, évoquant« l'ampleur du défi » pour le chef du gouvernement alors que plusieurs membres de son parti ont fait part de leur hostilité à cette normalisation. Bref, conclut le site, « le plus dur pour Saad-Eddine el-Othmani consistera à circonscrire les tensions dans les rangs du parti de la Lampe à quelques mois des prochaine élections législatives. » Autre versant de cet accord historique, le sport ! « Vers une diplomatie du ballon rond ? » entre le Maroc et Israël, s'interroge le site Le 360. Et bien c'est fort possible. Le journal Al Adath al Maghribyaqui a constaté que la rumeur bruissait en Israël autour de l'organisation d'un match entre les deux sélections nationales de football. Une rencontre est d'ailleurs prévue entre l'équipe de l'État Hébreu et celle des Émirats arabes unis, conséquence là aussi de la normalisation des relations diplomatiques. Sauf que, pour l'instant, les dirigeants du foot marocain se font discrets, explique le journal. Il a contacté un responsable de la Fédération royale marocaine de football qui, explique Al Adath al Maghribya, « s'est contenté d'annoncer ne pas avoir d'informations sur le sujet ».

La reconnaissance par les Etats-Unis de la souveraineté du Maroc sur son Sahara et l'annonce de la rétablissement des liens entre le Royaume et Israël ont suscité beaucoup de réactions au sein de la classe politique marocaine, y compris au sein du PJD. Cependant, le communiqué issu par le parti de la lampe deux jours après l'annonce, et les sorties médiatiques de certains de ses cadres ont apporté plus de questions que de réponses sur la position du parti au pouvoir depuis dix ans. Aber das ist auch sehr wichtig ist, dass es mal ganz klar eine eigene Episode bekommt. Und worauf ich heute zu sprechen kommen [00:01:30] möchte, ist diese riesig großen, roten, knalligen oder gelben Schilder, die dir eine Rabattaktion vorgaukeln. Rabatte Gauguins sage ich deshalb, weil sie das Wort sparen benutzen. Rabatte Hier minus 1,00 Prozent. Es wird nicht gesagt minus 5 Prozent, was Sie sparen, oder Sie sparen hier 38 Prozent, und [00:02:00] hier wird mit den wortbedeutungen inflationär umgegangen und Sie werden einfach falsch gedeutet. Rabatte Ich bin sogar in Vorbereitung auf diese podcaster Episode auf wortbedeutungen Punkt Info gegangen und meines Erachtens nach. Meines persönlichen Erachtens nach wird für das Wort sparen eine falsche Wortbedeutung Definition auf Wortbedeutung herausgegeben, nämlich die erste Wortbedeutung ist Geld für eine spätere Verwendung ansammeln. Aber das macht es meines Erachtens nach nicht richtiger, denn es bedeutet auch gemäß Wortbedeutung Punkt, Info weniger Geld ausgeben. Und das ist nicht falsch. Rabatte Das ist nicht richtig Sparen ist nicht weniger Geldausgeben. Sparen ist immer dann, wenn auf deinem Sparkonto oder in deiner Kasse oder sonst irgendwo mehr Geld ist als vorher. Was [00:03:30] weniger Geldausgeben bedeutet, ist ein Sparen. Einsparen bedeutet für mich weniger Geld ausgeben, ich kann von 1000 Euro bezahle ich nur 60 und kann 40 Euro einsparen. Rabatte Aber deswegen habe ich doch nicht 40 Euro gespart. Das finde ich schlimm und die Definition Das Wort, das wir suchen, ist Ersparnis. Eine Ersparnis hat eine Definition [00:04:00] Verringerung des Aufwands bei unveränderter Ertrag. Also ist doch eine Ersparnis. Weniger bezahlen und nicht sparen. Und das auf der gleichen Webseite. Rabatte Das haben wir ein bisschen zu denken gegeben, deswegen habe ich gesagt Ich mache mal heute eine Episode daraus, und ich möchte, dass du aufpasst. [00:04:30] Womit du gelockt wirst, du sollst ansparen! Und du sollst auch ein Sparen ansparen ist sparen, und das bedeutet, ich gehe noch einmal drauf. Rabatte Und die du wärst auch bereit, die 200 Euro auszugeben. Dann Tudors, da steht minus 40 Prozent. Dann bedeutet das in diesem Fall Die Handtasche wäre 80 Euro billiger. Und dann sparen wir 80 Euro, die 80 Euro in die linke Hosentasche [00:05:30] stecken. Und die 120 Euro der Verkäuferin geben zwar die Handtasche auch 200 gekostet. Wir haben 80 Euro eingespart, und wir haben sie gleichzeitig angespart. Die meisten gehen hin und machen den Fehler und freuen sich kurz. Ohio ist ja billiger. Rabatte Oder es wird gar als Kaufargument genommen. Das ist auch ganz falsch. Das heißt für 213, ja nicht sehr günstig. Jetzt schlage ich zu. Das [00:06:00] ist nicht zu empfehlen, sondern gibt das ganze Geld aus, steckt die 80 Euro in die andere Tasche und macht dir das, was ich ganz, ganz toll finde. Persönlich sind diese alten Zigarren Kästchen. Rabatte Heute werden ja nicht mehr so viele Zigarren geraucht und die werden auch nicht über die Cassidian verkauft. Früher hat man die vom Opa immer gekriegt, vielleicht über Ebay ein schönes altes Schatzkästchen kaufen und dieses Geld mal ein ganzes Jahr lang da reinlegen. Das [00:06:30] möchte ich hier für heute mitgeben. Ganz kurz, ganz knackig, präzise. Rabatte Bitte lass dich von den falschen Definitionen der marketing-abteilungen nicht irre führen. Weniger Geld ausgeben ist, das hat schon bedeutende Webseiten geschafft. Weniger Geld ausgeben ist nicht sparen, es ist einsparen. Rabatte Du sparst etwas ein. Wir müssen sparen, einsparen und ansparen differieren. Und [00:07:00] wenn du weniger zahlst, dann ist das eine Ersparnis. Aber deswegen hast du noch lange nichts angespart. Gene talks to us about the early days of PJD on the inside and the role that inmates committees and outside support played in prisoner resistance in the 70s and 80s. The podcast features interviews with former and current prisoners, as well as supporters on the outside. For those new to prison history, Prisoner Justice Day, also called PJD, started in 1975 on the one year anniversary of the death of Edward Nalon, an inside organizer who bled to death in a segregation cell in Millhaven Maximum Penitentiary on August 10th, 1974. Prisoners refused to eat and refused to work to commemorate Eddie's death. In May 1976, Robert Landers, who had been actively organizing in Archambault Pen before being involuntarily transferred to Millhaven, died in a segregation cell in Millhaven after repeated calls for medical help met no response. In June 1976, prisoners in Millhaven launched a call for support for their one day hunger strike in remembrance of all prisoners who had died inside - to take place on August 10th. Word spread across the country and, in the end, thousands of prisoners participated in the one day hunger strike and supporters on the outside organized events on the outside. A lot has changed since the 70s, not just in prison, but outside of prison. While respecting PJD remains important to many on the inside and outside, the numbers of those participating are nowhere near the numbers involved in the 70s and 80s. Adria Lawrence speaks about about the recent elections in Morocco on this week's POMEPS podcast with Marc Lynch, "The outcome isn't really surprising, though very few people expected a big surprise. The PJD [Party of Justice and Development, a moderate Islamist-oriented party] took more seats than its rival." Adria Lawrence is Associate Professor of Political Science and a research fellow at the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies. Her research reflects her expertise in the politics of the Middle East and North Africa. "It was probably quite expected for the PJD to continue its prior mandate for the last five years with a majority of seats in the parliament," Lawrence says. "Secularists were worried about what an Islamist party would do, but the PJD hasn't pushed for that much of an Islamist agenda." In fact, Lawrence says, the PJD has not accomplished a lot in the last five years. They "haven't managed to make major steps forward on their major platforms, like corruption. They've had some pretty serious problems to face: there's been a drought in Morocco, there's an unemployment crisis. They've had a lot of obstacles, and I think they've done what they could in the parliament." Still, voter turnout was low. "It would appear that turnout was worse in this election than in 2011— still less than half of eligible voters."
