During this episode I chat with Lou Hardwick, a single mother and folk herbalist based on Gumbayniggir country on the mid-north coast of New South Wales. Lou's herbal creations focus on whole-plant, hand made remedies. She orients her offerings, and by extension her business, to the process of making itself. It's the presence and interaction with the plants and the process of creating that provides her with a powerful sense of self as well as the inspiration to share her love of this ever-evolving relationship with her community. She aims to empower others to lean into their plant curiosities by positioning themselves as the expert in their own senses and experiences while providing inspiration to take that first or next imperfect step towards working with plants in a way that savours both a sense of humour and reverence. In this podcast, Lou reflects on how even though small and consistent acts of self-care can be incredibly powerful, that in her experience its been the bigger yet fundamental decisions and life changes that have been her truest acts of self-care. In her story, it has been the hardest and most challenging turning points in her life that revealed the path to herbalism. Late last year Lou launched her first online education offering ‘Potent Herbal Oils' to great success, quickly transforming herbal infused oil making practices and results across her community.**SHOW NOTES**Lou shares some of her favourite teachers, including: Kami McBride- connect with Kami hereJacqui Bushell- connect with Jacqui here**CONNECT**Lou's Potent Herbal Oils Workshop is available to join at any time hereYou can get your hands on Lou's divine hand crafted herbal folk remedies hereYou can connect with JESS via instagram and facebook here and here, join her newsletter community here, buy her handmade herbal products here or book an appointment here.**BUY ME A CUPPA**If you liked the episode and want more, a cuppa fuels my work and time, which is given for free. The plants have so much more to teach us than what has been written down by others; there is another level of wisdom that can only be accessed by direct communication with the living Earth. When we cultivate an embodied knowing of the natural world we realize that we don't need any special gifts or gurus or long lists of memorized plant constituents to mediate our relationship with our more-than-human kin. A nervous system and an open heart are all that's needed. Let us open our channels of perception and reclaim our ancestral birthright to be in direct communication with our mother planet and those we share it with. Herbal oil applied to the skin is an excellent form of self-care. Oils provide several benefits: there's the healing from the medicinal constituents of the herb, the affirmation that we're taking care of ourselves, and the self-healing power of physical touch. We need to overcome the incorrect notion that infused oils are for skincare or to look pretty or to take away wrinkles. We do need to keep in mind that when we use oils, we're absorbing things into our skin. That's why herb-based oils are better than petroleum-based oils. This week's podcast guest is an expert in herbal oils. Kami McBride is the author of The Herbal Kitchen, and she's taught herbal medicine at several colleges. Over more than 30 years, Kami has helped thousands of families make the highest-quality herbal remedies to prevent illness, take care of common ailments, and protect their health naturally. ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism:https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/ ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. We are wired to perceive information from the natural world around us— it’s how we have survived as a species. Kami McBride is the author of The Herbal Kitchen and has developed several online courses that facilitate the skills and confidence building to use herbs in day-to-day life for health and self-care. Kami’s 30+ years of teaching herbal medicine is steeped in her calling to inspire culture that embraces taking care of our bodies with healing herbs, a deep connection with the earth and a lifestyle that passes this knowledge on to our children. Kami has taught herbal medicine at University of California, San Francisco School of Nursing, and the Integral Health Masters’ program at the California Institute of Integral Studies. She has helped thousands of families gain confidence using herbs for disease prevention and self-care.
