In this episode of Superhero Ethics, hosts Matthew Fox and Riki Hayashi are joined by Paul Hoppe to dive into the first part of Cobra Kai, Season 6. The trio unpacks the latest developments in the Karate Kid universe, exploring the show's strengths, weaknesses, and cultural implications. Is Cobra Kai staying true to its roots or losing its way? The hosts discuss how the show balances nostalgia with new storylines, questioning whether the constant resetting of character arcs is holding the series back. They examine the portrayal of martial arts, with Paul lending his expertise to critique the authenticity of the fighting scenes and training methods. How does Cobra Kai handle representation and cultural sensitivity? The conversation takes a critical look at the show's depiction of Asian characters and martial arts traditions, raising concerns about stereotypes and missed opportunities for authentic representation.Other topics covered include:The introduction of the Sekai Taikai tournament and its plausibilityTory's character development and the handling of her mother's deathThe show's approach to teen drama and romantic relationshipsThe performance of the young cast and their potential for future stardomThe balance between realistic martial arts and Hollywood-style actionIn conclusion, while Cobra Kai continues to entertain with its blend of nostalgia and teen drama, the hosts agree that the show could benefit from more thoughtful character development and cultural representation. This week, we travel to a galaxy far, far away and ask the question: With all the films, TV shows, animated shows, comics, novels, and video games out there, is there too much Star Wars? Don't get us wrong, of course, we love the Star Wars Universe to pieces. But depending on which adaptation or spinoff you're talkin' about, mileage can vary. The Mandalorian and Andor were well received, but Obi-Wan and Ahsoka, not so much. And no one in fandom seems super excited after seeing The Acolyte trailer. We also discuss other movies that have been adapted for television like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Westworld, The Karate Kid (Cobra Kai), and What We Do in the Shadows. The conversation ends with a Highlander tangent based on the original films, the '90s TV show, and the recently-announced reboot starring Henry Cavill.

Jesse Kove is an established and successful American actor who has a myriad of credits to his name. Having got interest in the entertainment industry at an early age, performing skits for his family and visiting film sets with his father (Martin Kove aka Karate Kid/Cobra Kai bad guy John Kreese). He has racked up some very good roles, one of his most memorable starring alongside Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love, Enemy at the Gates, The Handmaid’s Tale) in Wings of Eagles, an unofficial sequel to Chariots of Fire. Filmed in China and follows the incredible story of Eric Liddell. Jesse has recently been seen on Netflix which brought him to the attention of a whole new fan base. In Cobra Kai he plays David, a high school jock who is the bully of the younger Kreese. Ironically he plays the bully rather than of the younger version of the character his father plays so well. We chat about his experience and his absolute love for the show and the nostalgia it brings. We also find out what muppet he would be, with a big clue being that Jesse loves cookies!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/hellblazerbiz)

Crissy's "Cobra Kai" obsession finally comes to light this week! Little did she know back in '84 that bad apple Billy Zabka, sorry William Zabka, would so entrance her in 2020? Unfortunately Anne can still resist his charms but in discussing, "The Karate Kid", it seems another man has caught her eye. Not who you'd expect. Plus, the wacky world of zoom calls gets another entry into the NSFW Hall of Fame with Jeffrey Toobin, Miley Cyrus has a close encounter and "prisoner on the run" takes on a whole new meaning for one Utah woman. AND, the debut of a new segment, "Poppy's Words of Wisdom" - this is one you just have to hear to appreciate. What a week! Enjoy! Ron Thomas is one of the original cast from The Karate Kid where he played Bobby, the member of Cobra Kai who had a conscience and tried to steer his friend Johnny in the right direction as well as stood up against Kreese. Ron reprised his role as Bobby in the worldwide #1 hit show Cobra Kai where he has gained an entire new fanbase as well as rekindled the nostalgia of those original KK fans. Since Karate Kid, Ron has led a life helping others. Through being a real life world martial arts champion and sensei to his students, through to being a motivational speaker and life coach (voted best in America by Good Morning America), he has reached and helped many people with his words and excellent philosophy he holds about life, synchronicity and more. Alright stop, collaborate, and listen. Ryan's back from his brand new adventure. Matthew & Ryan rap about the Ryan Rails America adventure that took Ryan from LA to Portland to Chicago via Amtrak. The pretty-fly-for-white-guys cover all the ground that Ryan covered via rail and why he decided to take to the skies to return home from Chicago. With the Labor Day Holiday weekend in effect, Ryan breaks in a new family grill and Matthew beats the heat by introducing his son to the Karate Kid movies before starting Cobra Kai on Netflix. The dudes also share the misery of getting Hawk-blocked when their pre-ordered copies of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 get delayed, the joys of unsubscribing from annoyingly frequent marketing emails, the immaturity of Holey Moley, and other musings.
On this weeks Media Obscura, Nick and Mike celebrate Cobra Kai hitting Netflix by checking out 1984's sports movie hallmark, The Karate Kid! High schooler Daniel LaRusso is getting bullied by Johnny Lawrence and his karate buddies until he learns self-defense thanks to his new friend, Mr. Miyagi. Oh, and there's a crane kick or two in there somewhere. Check out some of our other vintage and strange movie/television discussions at https://themediaobscura.com/

Karate Kid was released in 1984 and went on to be an all out cinematic classic. It's a wonderful coming of age martial arts film set in the mid 1980's San Fernando Valley. Ron Thomas was one of the actors who played a member brutal and iconic "Cobra Kai" karate gang. His character "Bobby Brown" was known as the one Cobra Kai who actually showed some remorse for what the way Daniel was being treated. He delivered some of the films most memorable lines in scenes that EVERYBODY forever remembers. There was "leave him alone man he's had enough" as the skeleton-costume clad bad guys were pummeling Daniel. Then there was "But Sensei I can beat this guy" during his semi-final tournament match against Daniel. Ron's character was the one who delivered the cheap-shot that nearly put Daniel out of the competition just before the finals! Ron not only made a name for himself in the entertainment industry, he's had enormous success in the Martial Art industry (He is actually now Sensei Ron Thomas)...successfully competing on the national level for years. He's a 2-time world champion! He's also a very successful personal development coach who's put out some great books designed to get people performing at their best. Join me in this Karate film themed episode as we hang with one of the original Cobra Kai! NO MERCY!!!! Hey ATA Listeners, I don't know if you all checked it out but this week's Game of Thrones had Daenerys Targaryen become the ultimate representation of girl power as she said I am woman, hear my dragons roar as she kick started a slave uprising by having her winged pets flame broil an abusive tyrant. In result of this, the writers of our other favorite shows must have been inspired as they aired episodes with their female characters showing some kick butt dominance. Yep, that's right folks. ATA Episode 122 is all about girl power discussing Belle's jarring personality transformation on Once upon a Time, Beckett using a Millionaire Inventor to play hard to get with Castle, Felicia Day's return to Supernatural where she becomes a full-fledged hunter, Community's Britta untangling a Freaky Friday situation to deal with a breakup, Juliet taking down a stalker Karate Kid Cobra Kai style on Psych, The Big Bang Theory's Amy helping Sheldon find closure to the cancellation of SyFy's Alphas and Person of Interest having Carter save Fusco's butt big time. However, that's not all we got from the liberated female characters of television as I present a whopping crackpot theory from this week's Journey to the Center of the TARDIS Doctor Who episode regarding Clara being the Doctor's ultimate companion or in other words a representation of all 50 years of Doctor Who, who has shown up just in time for the 50th Anniversary Special in the Fall. Also with this week of television, I'm sure you can find plenty of other moments where women have reigned supreme in another edition of our Airwaves Rundown Section where Andy helps Nico review The Following, Michael covers Revolution, I jump into Nico's review on Defiance and the great Woo Kim gives Andy a helping hand with discussing Glee. On top of that, Nico reviews The Americans, Elementary and much more. So guys who like geeking out over their TV Crushes and girls who like cheering on their favorite fictional gal pals, what are you waiting for?! Give this girl powered podcast a listen because this one's for you!
